Tough Ending in K.C.

January 5th, 2010 - 12:40am by mark_cooper

This may be the toughest post I’ve made all season because I was a little upset with what I read in the papers today. Remember what you were told in school? If you’re upset, wait before you say something (write something) that might get you in trouble. Well that’s what I did. I waited and now it’s almost midnight and I couldn’t wait any longer.

Here goes. Woody Paige wrote an article today that said the Broncos quit. It said QUIT. Are you kidding me???

Sorry Woody and everyone that bought that garbage, professional athletes and coaches don’t quit. QUIT is a 4 letter word that ISN’T, NEVER WAS, or NEVER WILL BE in the vocabulary of a professional athlete or coach. Sports writers use it because they either haven’t ever played or never played at a high enough level to know there is no such word or action when you reach the NFL.

They use it because they don’t know better and are trying to sell newspapers and get a reaction from the readers (it worked) here.

This team did better than anyone gave them credit for at the beginning of the season and yet disappointed us more at the end because of a 6-0 start that got all our hopes up and then the season came crashing down. I personally enjoyed this season more than many in the past few years because I really got excited about the future and what we have to build on. Just look at the other 8-8 teams around the league….pretty good crew of folks that didn’t make the playoffs too. Many beat better teams throughout the year but just couldn’t keep it together for a multitude of reasons.

Seasons over, more controversy with Brandon and now Scheffler and I still haven’t heard the whole story so I reserve comment until more comes out in the coming weeks. Are they trying to be traded? I don’t know. They both want to catch more balls and seem to want to be in a more vertical offense. Can’t say I blame them on a personal level other than disrupting the rest of the team for personal gain. Not something any of the real pros of the day I know would have done.

I’ve always been a team guy. I did what the team asked, I played guard and tackle and which ever side I needed to play and moved from one side to the other during game…why…to win as a team. I played hurt, shot up whatever was needed to win. Call me stupid, maybe, but I wanted to win regardless of the cost to me personally. I had all offseason to heal and the rest of my life worry about it. But not gameday.

Different era, different mindset. You can have your opinion but there’s only one head coach, president of any company, owner or operator and they have the final say, pure and simple….just like out here in the real world. Agree to disagree and play to win.

The game. Like we’ve discussed before…sometimes you don’t need to look at the stats. Sometimes in the NFL, you wish you could have a mulligan and a do-over because it just wasn’t your day. Tough day, enough said, because I know you all will say it for me.

Tough year, new team, new coaches, new players, new system….I’m still excited by what I saw that we have to build on. Call me a HOMER…..I like what we have going forward, with or without Brandon or Scheffler who ever makes the next fuss.

Teams win, individuals at the end of their career wish they had a chance at a ring and Super Bowl.

QUIT?…really…don’t know, recognize, relate or acknowledge the word.

GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!

I look forward to your comments and the offseason. I’m sure I won’t catch as much heat as I did last offseason…but you never know…keeps things interesting doesn’t it? :o )

The blog doesn’t stop here. I’ll have more to say and discuss as we watch the Playoffs together.

@ Atwater4HOF, how will Denver be left with nothing? The Broncos will get draft picks from trading Marshall and be able to use the money they would have had to pay Marshall to re-sign Dumervil to a long-term deal while addressing other needs, e.g., the interior of the offensive line, along with help at the defensive end spots and at inside linebacker.

  2. brian_schneider says:

Its one of those things “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”

  3. Atwater4HOF says:

I didn’t mean nothing literally. Yes we will get a 1st round pick. But it’s gonna take 2-4 years to develop that player to their potential. In the meantime, the window of opportunity for Bailey and Dawkins even Andra Davis, Haggan, and Graham will likely be closed. Just look at Ayers and Moreno, both have showed promise but are at least 2 years from reaching their peak. If we are looking to blow up the team of veterans and collect picks, then I think it is a good move to get rid of Marshall. With a potential uncapped year, resigning Marshall and Dumervil shouldn’t be an issue.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

Unfortunately, if he is traded, it will be discussed here ad nauseum just like the Cutler thing. I have discussed it so many times this year, I think I will take a break from it from now on. One last time, in my eye will all know where Marshall stands and it’s for himself only, he has no integrity for the team at all, he only played hard this year to lock up his future contract whatever team it’s with, he already said so, if it’s not with Denver he is ok with it, so he still says stupid things and as McD said it’s not just the fact that he missed a rehab session to get ready for the game, which in my eye warranted the benching right there, but there was a lot more to it than that. Either Marshall is a selfish player who doesn’t want to lay it on the line for the team, or McD is a liar. Guess what, the beast lovers will say McD is a liar and the rest of us say Marshall is not a team player, so it’s an impasse, we can have all the discussions about the matter we want, we will not resolve anything, I’m done with the matter, whatever happens happen and I will live with it either way, I’m a Denver Bronco fan.

  5. Atwater4HOF says:

And all I’ve been asking is what did Marshall say since week 1 that warrants the comment “he still says stupid things”. McD had already benched him when Marshall was late for the rehab session. I like players that play for a contract, he played hard all year… if he didn’t care about the team he would NOT have gotten in Moreno’s face about fumbling. All players should be playing for their contracts, why wouldn’t they. Like you said, we can’t see eye to eye on it, just trying to deliver my perspective

  6. baylinorcrush says:

It was right in front of you, he said after the benching that he doesn’t care where he will end up playing, that’s a stupid thing to say. You only say that after you know it’s over. Peace out.

  7. Orange_Crusher says:

B-Marsh benched himself. McD just put him on the inactive list to make room for someone who didn’t bech themself.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

OC, in essence you’re correct, wise man, LOL.

  9. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

We didn’t need Brandon Marshall to win the last game. Obviously all we needed was better play on defense. We let the Chiefs go up and down the field on us, that’s why we lost.

  10. nw3030 says:

BM is an extremely talented player but he is not irreplaceable. we will have the tools this off season to replace him.

  11. nw3030 says:

And i dont mean through the draft or FA, I mean with another year to build the system royal, gaff, stoke, lloyd, and maybe even mckinley will all be alot better. so that in itself is replacing him.

  12. brian_schneider says:

All I can say is any player that tears apart Bronco Country has no place on the Bronco roster. Look what its doing to us…he’s tearing us apart. We have to stick together, we’re all we’ve got to hold on to. :-( LOL!!!!

  13. Atwater4HOF says:

Ok I am tired of saying the same thing over and over again, you obviously don’t understand the point I am trying to make. I’m looking for the interview transcript of Marshall the day before he was made inactive… there were some quotes in there that I feel reinforce my point.

Time is of the essence and it will be tough unless we sign a big name free agent wide reciever to replace Marshall. Rookie wideouts hardly every step in and perform at a Pro Bowl level. We will need Royal to really step up next year.

  14. Atwater4HOF says:

Oh I didn’t see your 2nd post nw… but I don’t know, Gaffeny and Stokely don’t fit the mold of ever being Pro Bowlers from this point on. I do really like McKinley, hopefully he can have a Desean Jackson type of role in our offense. With Royal, great talent, just needs to stay healthy.

With Royal, Stokely, and Mckinley we have a lot of small receivers. We’d definitely need to invest in a big, tall stud to help in the redzone.

  15. Atwater4HOF says:

With the exception of some comments about his personal goals, which I don’t see as a big deal you should have personal goals in a team aspect, I really liked the way he handled the interview. I guess it was in a different interview where he said “I don’t care where I play next year” comment. I just wish we’d give him a 2nd chance, Boldin gets it every year, Ochocinco gets it, somehow TO gets it.
    http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=9732

  16. nw3030 says:

Call me crazy, but that big tall stud you are talking about, we might already have in quinn. that guy can jump out of the stadium. and given a chance he may be a excellent weapon in the red zone.

  17. Atwater4HOF says:

From Kyle Orton on Wednesday of the Chiefs game week preparation

    On Marshall’s Pro Bowl selection
“His play speaks for itself. We haven’t had any issues with him and everything has been good. He continues to play well and very hard.”

  18. Atwater4HOF says:

He is large, but he is a TE and will be playing behind Graham still… But I do like his potential.

  19. nw3030 says:

Atwater4HOF, i have to say I was as big as a supporter of BMARSH as anyone. But my gut tells me its over. so this is why we are discussing the possibilites. while commend you on your loyality to BM i dont think he really has any for us as fans. He wanted the stats and the accolades that could get him the big money. And he got them. So lets just pray and hope that there is no CBA in place so we can at least get something for him. cause in all reality he is gone….

  20. Atwater4HOF says:

Oh I’m well aware that he is more than likely gone, I just look at stuff like Orton said last Wednesday (the day Marshall came up gimpy) and then hear people say that Orton, Dawkins, Bailey and everyone went to McDaniels to bench Marshall. Why would Orton say a quote like that and turn around and want him benched? Answer is, he wouldn’t.

  21. nw3030 says:

i know he is a TE but in my opinion we dont need someone to stretch the field we need someone to make plays in the redzone. and i think he can gives that extra punch in the red zone that alot of other TE give their teams

  22. Atwater4HOF says:

Yea i do agree. Scheffler had that ability to, he was just never used in the red zone. I’d like to see Quinn take one more year of improving his blocking and take over for Graham in 2011.

  23. nw3030 says:

Well internally behind closed doors we proably will never know what actually took place

  24. nw3030 says:

i think scheff was not used enough also. all we can do is hope McD irons some stuff out this year and start using the players he has left like he should.

  25. orcrush says:

I got excited because for the first 6 weeks we had great defense and team chemistry. Offense played good enough to win. After the humbling loss to Ravens and getting beat by Pittsburgh at home, I felt the confidence was shot and was too much to overcome. Broncos could not get it back on track like the bolts did. We are a few players away from being a legitimate contender and not just a playoff team. I rather not go to the playoffs if it’s not about winning the Super Bowl. Good luck to the Jets. yeah right. I think a strong linebacker and an upcoming QB is needed. Orton can lead one more year, maybe but my vote is for Tim Tebow. The guy has no weaknesses like I’m hearing ignorant people saying about him playing on the next level. Are they blind? Too big? Would they rather he be too small? How stupid is that.
One more complaint. Don’t lose at home again or it better be by a lucky field goal or something rare. Especially to the Raiders of all teams.

  26. RSH says:

Someone with the name jwalk in their handle has absolutely no credibility in my book. Javon Walker was a complete joke as a Denver Bronco. He’s up there with Travis Henry, Daryl Gardner, Dale Carter, et al. as biggest Bronco failures.

So if you hate McDaniels, what’s your solution? Fire him? Okay, then who do the Broncos hire? Bill Cowher doesn’t want to coach this season and wants way too much money, anyway. It’s easy to say you hate someone and to fire the coach, but what’s your solution? Firing coaches every season is not how to run a franchise. It hasn’t worked out too well for those teams that have, e.g., the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders used to be a greatly feared team when they had stability in the front office and within their coaching staff. Since the 2002 season, they have gone 16-48 as a result of the almost seasonal firing and hiring. No, thank you.

  27. baylinorcrush says:

RSH, who are you talking to? I don’t see any jwalk, maybe his post has been deleted, considering he sounds as he was letting coach have it. Just wondering…

  28. broncoterry says:

It is refreshing not to read how Orton is the reason for 8 and 8. This was a team effort.
Coaching, playing, and the me attitude. I do believe that this team will get much better.

I do hope McD learns from his mistakes. He has the makings of a very good head coach.

Is Orton the answer I don’t think so but he was a 10 rated QB this year.

The running game was weak I hope KM adds some muscle and works on his balance. He reminds me to much of G. Wilhite.

The “D” must stop the run. When a team has a running QB put a spy on him.

    Just a fans prospective.

    GO Broncos

  29. baylinorcrush says:

broncoterry, with all due respect, McNabb only ran once in that game if I recall right, had we had a spy on him for the game, we would of sacrificed many other plays and probably would of lost by a lot more. It was a freak play that the front 7 should of stopped, at least from going over twenty yards, forcing them to punt. It was one of them lack of respecting assignments type of thing, not covering their gaps. Using a spy would of been a waste for that perticular game, IMO.

  30. RSH says:

@ baylinorcrush, I believe the post I responded to was deleted.

  31. McDan Dare says:

The trouble is that our form in the last 10 games is 2 & 8, which is Cockney rhyming slang for something being in a right state, and that was how the team were performing in the second half of the season. If this form was carried into next season we would be in trouble.

Whilst I do not believe the players quit they did get very frustrated and exasperated by how the games went, which just goes to show how much they cared.

On other particular points like the McNabb run, I think this emphasised that McNabb read the game better than Orton, who also had an obvious chance to run but did not take it, probably due to self-protection.

As for Brandon Marshall’s hamstring injury this is one of the most difficult injuries to treat. I have known players in soccer come out of matches just because of a tight hamstring, which no scan or physio could pick up. They have then tried to play a few days later and got a hamstring strain putting them out for 3 weeks. So Marshall was right to do what he did and rest his hamstring rather than be injured for post season. It was up to the players who played to get us through. Unfortunately the defence blew up against the KC run and that was an end to it.

Finally Coach McDaniels has had a tough time in the last 10 weeks and should have learned a lot from it. He is a young coach who needs time to get things right and I think Bowlen knew this when he signed him. I think we all hope McDaniels makes the right decisions in the draft and trades and comes back stronger next season.

  32. mark_cooper says:

Ice Cream, hmm (imready), probably didn’t think I read all the responses…sure do. No crap here just the facts as I see them looking from the outside in, after being on the inside.

Certainly a different era, but the game has to be played with the same intensity every play or you will get hurt or be on the sidelines, then gone quickly. We had guys that looked like Tarzan and played like Jane and it only took a year or two to see them cycled right out of the league.

Passions an different animal. Some played/play with controled passion, others with it on their sleeve. But believe me when I say, “if you don’t have it”…….your career is short lived.

Playoffs….can’t root for the Chargers…sorry, nor the Colts….like the Saints…….but kinda would like to see Farve win his last one at his age….maybe it’s a ole guy thing :o ) LOL

I’m staying away and out of the Marshall/Scheffler comments until I see what they say after all’s said and done then I’ll chime in. I think there’s some things to come and I’m patient…not ready to make my call until I see how they act after the fact..THEN, you’ll get my analysis and opinion.

Crazy year, fun year, great blog responses from you all and I’m absolutely fine when you call me out or disagree because I actually learn a lot from you all.

    On a serious note.
Please say a prayer for Charlie Meyers and and his family. Charlie passed away and we/me/Colorado will ALL really really miss that guy. For those of you out of State who may not know the name, he was our Outdoor writer here in Denver, for what seems like ever……at the Denver Post and I read everything he wrote and I will miss him dearly. He was the best I ever read and I read a bunch.

As much as I busted Woody about the quitting, Woody wrote what I’ll call the best article I ever read this morning about Charlie. THANKS Woody…GREAT article.

Thank you Charlie Meyers, God bless you! We will miss you!

Kinda tough to get back on track after that comment………what a great guy. Knew Charlie on a semi-personal level. Had him at my charity flyfishing tournament a few years back…he let me write a fishing article in the Post years ago (he fixed it for me) about fishing in S. Florida and would meet him from time to time at flyfishing shows here in town to just say hi, chat and have a coffee. Really great guy.

Playoffs….who’s your pick and why??? By the way….you all really got off on a tangent above…..wow, I had a hard time keeping up with the back and forth…but as always…worth the read.

Who’s your pick THIS WEEK………….amd SB pick?

I can honestly say that i hope i never see the name Tim Tebow mentioned in Broncos Posts again. I think that is definately the last thing we need. Dont get me wrong Tebow will go down as one of the best College football players of all time, but as a QB i dont see him being anything more than an average NFL Player if that. His mechanics are all wrong, his arm isnt as accurate than lesser QBs, and he isnt going to be able to run like that in the NFL.

I dont think we should get players and then have to teach them the position. just like this year, we got a DE (Ayers) and turned him into a LB. dont get me wrong here i see potential in Ayers but why didnt we just get a LB? There were 3 good ones out there (Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, and even James Laurinaitis) i just dont understand if we wanted a linebacker why didnt we get one?

I really hope Coach has a little better draft strategy this year than last.

  34. RSH says:

Each game this weekend is a rematch from earlier this season. The Patriots and Ravens played in New England in Week 4 with the Patriots winning in a close one, the Eagles and Cowboys will meet for a third time this season as Dallas looks to go 3-0 against Philadelphia. The Cowboys and Eagles met just a week ago as did the Bengals and Jets, and Packers and Cardinals.

In the AFC this weekend, I like the New England Patriots over the Baltimore Ravens 27-24 even without Wes Welker. Tom Brady is 9-0 at home in the playoffs. I like the Cincinnati Bengals over the New York Jets, 16-10 as I don’t trust Mark Sanchez. The Jets’ last two victories were presented to them on a silver platter.

In the NFC this weekend, I like the Dallas Cowboys over the Philadelphia Eagles 31-27 and I like the Green Bay Packers over the Cardinals in Arizona 31-20.

As much as it pains me to say it, my Super Bowl pick is the San Diego Chargers. They are playing amazing football right now and despite my disdain for Philip Rivers, I have to admit, he’s a clutch performer with a knack for finding a way to win.

  35. since77 says:

Definately red hot. Been telling people for three weeks now, bolts are the best team in the league. Could be true but I hope not. I’ll root for most any team that they play.
Patriots over the Ravens, they’re still a great team.
Jets defense can handle the Bengals and it’s hard to knock Sanchez, I wouldn’t have minded having that kid on the Broncos bench.
Dallas is starting to look like the team that people thought they were after week #1. I think they will make it look easy. Romo is a lot better than he has looked most of this season.
Cardinals over the Packers. Watching Warner in the post season last year made it a lot of fun. It was my only consolation with the Broncos being out. They might suprise everyone again.

  36. jjluvsdabroncos says:

Just as COOP said…..you have good days and you have bad day….some days may be better or worse than others but that is just LIFE!!!! My BOYZ DID NOT QUIT!!!! They are a great FB team and considering what peeps said about the Broncos b 4 the games started…..those same peeps can eat their words….they won more than the 3 predicted games plus 5 more. Not bad in my mind….Sure I wish we would’ve made it to the playoffs but it wasn’t in the cards this year. Wait and see for next year! The Broncos need to play as a team more and not try to show off individually cuz that’s what hurts games and blows points! Just my opinion!
HEY THERE COOP…HOPE TO C U AT THE BRONCOS FAN FAIR!!! I WILL BE THERE ONCE AGAIN IN THE MOST BAD AZZ OUTFIT TO SHOW OFF MY BRONCO PRIDE! LOVE 4 THE BOYZ….IN MY EYES…THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD!!!!
COMBINE AND DRAFT…HERE WE COME!! ;0)

  37. mark_cooper says:

Still a lot to be said throughout the off-season and Playoffs. Going to a new Post for the Playoff picture to yak.

You all are welcome as we run through the playoffs and see what happens around the house here in Broncomania-ville. I love the insight and the comments and perspective.

    I’m going with……. :o ) …….see you at the next post
