Titans Fall

October 4th, 2010 - 11:16pm by mark_cooper

Gotta love Orton!!! No help in the running game he still pulls the trigger. And the receiving corps?? GAME BALLS for all of them.

Been funny listen to the debates…Can you get to the Superbowl without a running game? Of course not, just like you can’t without a defense. Then, what percentage do you need to run the ball? Wow, I’m not sure in all my years around football I’ve ever heard these kind of stupid questions get circulated?

Look at all the teams that are in or going to be in the hunt. They are pretty balanced all the way around. You can’t lead the league in passing and have a running game that’s last in the league or even down in the bottom percentile. If you did, you better have the number one defense too….doesn’t happen very often.

P.S. I have to stop here and welcome back Mondono……you catching any fish up there in Steamboat? We haven’t seen you around the blog in a while… cat got your typing finger? Much of the cast is back and in rare form.

Our guys played like there was no tomorrow and ALL Broncos nation should be proud. I’ll keep saying it all season “MAN DO I LOVE WHAT I SEE”.

They stopped the best back in the league and played hard on offense — “NOT PERFECT” by any means but HARD — and that’s where you start and the rest starts falling in place around you. Kudos to the defense and the bend don’t break attitude. Special teams helped win us one and I already know what’s coming from some of you guys/gals…RED ZONE. We have a start. They threw outside AND scored. Now it’s time for the power sets of all TE’s and Lineman. If we say here we come in that formation, I’ll be like a pig in slop…wallowing around and all happy and smiley. That’s not a pretty picture, but the way I’d like to see it come down inside the 5 yard line.

O.K. enough here, what are you thinking??

lol, you sure know how to make football funny Coopster. You got me laughing all the time. Anyhoo…

Well said as usual. Our red zone offense was a little better, still having problems though, but it wasn’t as bad as when we played Indy. Speaking of which, I cannot wait to see them pummel the Chiefs. Makes me nauseous they haven’t lost a game yet, there’s NO way they will outshine Manning & the Colts. Was surprising to see them lose to the Jags, but the Chiefs are going down this Sunday. Can’t wait to rub it in their faces either. lol, didn’t think I could be so harsh did ya??

As for our beloved Broncos, I can’t even think of the right words to say about Orton. He’s really stepped up to lead this team in the right direction, fighting for a win, and being able to throw as much as he has been. We definitely have the right starting QB this season. I just wish we had some kind of running game… its one thing that Orton has to throw the ball all the time all the while wearing out his arm, but now he has to put up rushing yards for us too?? Granted, 11 yards is nothing to talk about but he put up more yards than one of our own RBs. It’s nuts!! I just think we’re REAL blessed to have such talented & reliable WRs to throw to and not have to worry about them being “Mr. Butterfingers”. Brandon Lloyd has been a huge weapon for us, so excited to have him in Denver. Our WRs corps haven’t looked this good in a LONG time. And it was weird seeing Thomas take punt returns but he’s good at it, real good. Right idea putting a “beastly” WR in there who is tough to take down when he’s on the run.

We need to put more pressure on opposing QBs too… missing Doom right about now. Dawkins was hungry for some QB meat though, going after Young a lot. He’s still got it. Defense looked much better this week. Baltimore is going to be a real tough test though. Will be very interesting to watch.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  2. baylinorcrush says:

I see it’s still the let Cutler have it mode, LOL.

Talking about previous players, funny article by Kizla at the Post about Hillis, it starts like this:

At the risk of angering coach Josh McDaniels and offending families with small children, we dare to print the two dirtiest words in the Broncos’ language:

    Peyton Hillis.

So far in 2010, Hillis has gained 322 yards rushing for the Cleveland Browns and deducted 50 points from McDaniels’ IQ.

Like Bigfoot, the 240-pound Hillis and his myth grow larger by the hour. Run, Peyton, run. He is the first good reason during the entire recorded history of man that Colorado has ever been envious of Ohio. We would gladly trade Longs Peak for Hillis, even up. Deal?

  3. brian_schneider says:

I’d have to say trading Hillis was one of the bigger mistakes McD has made. He probably has more yards then our entire running attack combined.
We have to do something about our horrible, even nightmarish running game or lack there of. Maroney wasn’t the answer. First of all, he dances behind the line of scrimmage more than Moreno. Pick a hole make a decision and go for it. Its not hard to stop the running game when the HB stops himself in the backfield. I don’t know what’s worse, having a guy that doesn’t know the system and has to learn everything but runs hard, or a guy that knows the system and dances around before getting up field. Buck is only one tackle away from missing time. Moreno I sure hope can get and stay healthy. I really hope we can figure out our running game and become more effective. Remember when I said that without an effective running game Orton can’t be that effective. Well it has seemed to work failry well this season, but against the some of the better defenses, Jets, Raves, Steelers, it could be a whole different story.

  4. oldsouthstander says:

Hillis: 3 fumble, 2 lost. Nuff said.

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Ok, as to your question: What are you thinking? Here we go, my thoughts for the day:

I find it interesting no one anywhere I’ve seen has mentioned that the first quarter of the season is now over and done with, a sort of milestone, right, since the season is always tought of in 4 different quarters, September, October, November and December.

An NFL season is much like a golf tournament, I know it may sound crazy at first but bear with me. An NFL season is made of four quarters, a golf tourney is made of four days of competition.

The first two days in golf, Thursday and Friday, and the first two quarters in the NFL, September and October, you can’t win the thing but you sure can play yourself out of it.

The third day in golf, Saturday, basically like the third quarter in the NFL, November, is called moving day, that’s when you place yourself in position to make a run for the last day, or in the NFL for the last quarter, December.

On the last day in golf, Sunday, or the last quarter in the NFL, December, that’s when the top dogs who have put themselves in position separate themselves from the pack, the pretenders show their true colors and falter and the contenders rise to the top.

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell.

So what does it all mean for our 2-2 first quarter of the season record? Not very much, mainly that we didn’t start on a shooting ourselves out of the competition trend, we are doing enough to hang in there with our usual 500 record. But as we know nothing truly matters until November, unless you play yourself out of it by the end of October, like if the 49ers keep losing they are doing a pretty good job of it.

So in essence this early part of the season, specially the first quarter, is uneventful meaning wise, it’s just an appetizer for what’s to come in November and December, and as we all know those have been the two months we have MAJORLY struggled in in the past. So a major keeping things in perspective is required now, specially for the players, no one will give a thought to how you played in September at year end, it will all be about how you were able to hang in there in September and October, make a move in November and prove to the world you belong in December.

Loooonnng ways to go. So far, ok record wise, but like Coop says, unless you have the #1 D in the league winning one sided with just the pass is not how you separate yourself from the pack in this league, specially in the cold bad weather games ahead, the running game will become a crucial part of any team that succeeds then, with of course the exception being Manning with the Colts, the only QB on earth who can win with a one sided O.

So here is to the combination of McD, Barone and Studesville (HC, O line coach and RB coach) to find whatever in the world they need to find to make us run the ball.

That will utlimately be our salvation or our undoing, no doubt in my mind.

Come up with something, ANYTHING, don’t just go with the status quo, it’s not working!!! it’s horrible, the stats are there, we are last in rushing in the league, our players average from less than a yard per carry to a high of 2.8 yard by Moreno, PATHETIC, WAKE UP YOU ALL, COACHES AND PLAYERS, this is unacceptable!!!

Ok, you got the point, you know what I’m thinking today, LOL.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

oldsouthstander, I know you take McD’s side over Hillis and you are probably the only one, but with all due respect your fumble argument is very single minded.

Hillis, 66 carries for 322 yards and a 4.9 yards per carry average, 4 TD. Add 16 catches for 94 yards and I think you might be able to live with the two turnovers, just saying, let’s be honest about this, McD’s biggest blunder, and of many may I add.

And yeah Brian, we only have 220 yards total this season to Hillis 322 for a 2.2 yd average, no team has less than a 3 plus yard average, that’s how pathetic we are.

  7. killerkod says:

Keeping up letting previous players have it, I wonder how long it will take BMarsh to start whining in Miami. Sure, he got paid, but he’s not getting the ball or making an impact so far. I have no doubt he’ll become a cancer in that locker room when their record drops below .500. I’m so glad we don’t have him on our team anymore. I absolutely love our unselfish receiving corps. Each one of them pose a threat and gives Orton multiple options on any given play. Oton has been stellar given the lack of running game.

  8. Yovi21 says:

1nOnly, Ill respond to you on this blog, I know Orton is passing 90% of the time, but whats impressive to me is that the defenses we play know he is, and yet they have no answer. he continues to make smart decisions. I’ll give him 1 INT when he’s throwing 50+ a game. The only thing that would make him better is getting those points up every time! I can see where your coming from though!

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

Great article Coopster, but you made a boo boo,it’s Broncos Country,I love the fight and claw I see in our team, especially the runD,if we can get our run game going we could be contenders,BTW…….what do you think about the PowerBlocking scheme we are using ,and do you like it????

Anybody know if Larsen and Moreno have a chance of playing Sunday??

    BFE

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Coopster, let me rephrase my question, what do you think the problem is with the run game and how would you fix it???

  11. strandoftds says:

Thanks once again Coop. One thing is for sure, we better figure out the run game or were toast. We`ve got to have some balance on offense. I believe we will get it worked out. Sure glad to see Harris back, man did we need him back.

  12. BDawkRocks says:

This debate over to have Hillis or not have Hillis is getting old. He is gone, it is done and over with, so please move on. You have no way of knowing what Hillis would have done here. You are comparing apples and oranges. Would you trade offenses? Does the fact that the starting line has only played together for one real game have any bearing on the running issues? I am happy for Hillis but kudos to Orton and the recieving core and lastly to the Defense. McDaniels has created a formidable passing game, if he can get the running game going it will give defensive coordinators nightmares! Defense kept good control over the Colts, yes I know the Broncos lost but the Colts had 21 pts on little brothers team at half. No body liked it when the instant 6 and 0 start came to a halt, now you dont like when the defense is making strides and passing offense is looking good. Running game and scoring in the red zone will get better. Thought provoking as always Coop

  13. broncos20 says:

    amen to that BDRocks,
the Hillis thing is kind of getting old.. we let him go, simple as that..no need to rub it in McD’s face.. Glad Hillis is shining..
we had a bigger RB (White) but lost him for the season..we just have to make do with what we got..IMO.. although it is still important to get the running game goin.
Leshwn Mccoy, given he is slightly faster than Moreno, but his agility made him shine.,,I think Moreno has more intangibles..let him heal, he will make noise sooner enough..imo

  14. 07elway says:

I agree the Hillis subject is old because its done, McD clearly made his decision but his face should most definitely be rubbed in it seeing as how we have a non-existent running game and he’s at least being useful in Cleveland. I don’t want to sing the shoulda, coulda, wouldas of this little debate… Hillis could’ve put up all those stats here in Denver… he could’ve helped us out with our running game better than the guys we have now… he should’ve stayed but McD made a big mistake letting him go. I honestly have to wonder if he really sees our problem here, cuz nothing seems to be getting done to fix it. By now, I expected at least some improvement, but instead its gone from atrocious to non-existent.

I believe with time Moreno will be ready for at least the Jets game, he needs to 110% though. We can’t afford to have him injured like this and out for a couple weeks at a time. He’s the best we have right now. I can only hope to see improvement from Bucky & Maroney. Orton’s arm is going to give out on him sooner or later if he has to keep throwing like this.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  15. monodono says:

    COOP!

What’s on my mind? Lots of things…
First I wanna say thanks for the mention in your post you ROCK.
Next is T.O.P. that’s right my favorite subject TIME OF POSSESSION!
The Broncos owned the ball 10min. more than the titans did. How can this be with out a dominant running game? Truth is I don’t believe you have to have a dominant running game to be successful controlling the T.O.P. You just have to call the right amount of running play’s.
Many of you have heard me say in the past that I don’t care how many yards we get on any given down, and I don’t. I also don’t care how many total yard The Broncos gain in a game those are just details and bonus points. What I care about is that The Broncos call enough running plays and mostly first down running plays in order to make the LB respect your running game enough to be able to control them. My mantra on this is “If you can make a Linebacker Think instead of React you can control them.” even for a step here or a step there. With Coach McDaniels Offense The Broncos don’t need to dominate at the running game. Although We all want them too, it’s not necessary. The Broncos just need to call 20 or so running play’s at the right times and then use your play actions and screens.
COOP! what do you think of LG #64 Stanley Daniels? To me, the fact He’s is starting over OL #68 Zane Beadles speaks volumes as to what Coach McDaniels and His Staff think of this Guy. He has quietly taken over the LG position! I also think J.D.Walton has improved a lot as well, who would’ve thought Olson would be out and Walton is in? Crazy! Again I Like What I see too!
One more thing on the O Line, I do need to see the guards getting into the defensive backfield and make some contact with the Linebackers, I’ve seen some improvement here but they got to get better soon.

One last thing, I think The D showed a lot of heart and I loved how The Broncos closed out the 4th qtr.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  16. Borrachazo C.R says:

Did we switch last year’s rush defense for this year’s rushing offense?
    When…….
P.S: Someone tell McD to stop bringing ppl from New England, most of them have not done much, we are like the little patriots! Gaffney is the one that has stepped up big.

  17. Borrachazo C.R says:

There’s another 30 teams where you could get talented players too… LOL I’m not sure if he knows that =)

  18. mark_cooper says:

Now you are the one’s that crack me up…,baylinorcrush no disrespect on on the first post you made, but golf analogy…….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, :o ) the end worked though and Mondono, I like Daniels too…and agree we need to get to the backers BUT you have to win at the first level in order to get to the second level and I’m OK with the power scheme or modifies zone whatever you want to call it but THEN you have to win at the first level…make sense? Also was wondering when the TOP was going to come out bcause that’s a big one along with turnovers.

BeastFromEast92, it’s always Broncos Nation baby, because that’s bigger!! Ha! Ha!

07elway, agree AND I said I wouldn’t talk about Hillis anymore so mums the word for the rest of the season……..kinda-maybe.

strandoftds, you got it, the bottom line is we need more balance and it starts upfront like I mentioned above.

BIG game this week against a tough D and the best LB in the business since LT and the following week against probably the most complete team out there right now. Two Playoff caliber teams in two weeks so BIG-HUGE-MILESSTONE games in my view. What about you?

  19. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry Coop, I forgot linemen don’t play golf, it’s only skill position football players who do, like your old QB Elway, LOL.
