The GREEK Roast, wonderful man, we all LOVE!

March 15th, 2009 - 8:48pm by mark_cooper

The fundraiser was for Dani’s Foundation that raises money for pediatric sarcomas, which is a rare form of cancer that strikes children and young adults.

It was a comical roasting of one of the greatest men in Broncos history, Steve Antonopulos. The Greek. The hosts were Ron Zappolo and Dave Logan. The evening started out with the Mayor cracking on “The Greek”, then Vic Lombardi, Rich Karlis, Billy Thompson, me, Keith Burns, Claudie Minor and Gary Zimmerman taking shots at him, along with many others in the crowd, as Roasts are suppose to be. Zappolo and Logan chimed in occasionally between speakers too, taking shots back at some of us that fingered them out a few times.

The event, like all Roasts, ended with “The Greek” getting the last shots/cracks in at all of us individually and then on many of the alumni in the crowd. He was hilarious cracking back on everyone.

It was a wonderful evening for a wonderful cause for a man I love. Steve kept me and many of my teammates, current and past players on the field and in the league, probably longer than some of us could have without him. He is loved dearly.

The side note that has been written about is how Jay wasn’t there. No one actually expected him there with the media circus that’s been going on that’s hopefully cleared up tomorrow so we can get back to the main agenda in Broncotown… winning football games, period. He made a donation to the cause, and I respect that. Thanks Jay, that was the right thing to do.

Like I said before, people make mistakes… you – me – the President – all of us. I can agree to disagree with anyone and still get along… that’s what we do for the betterment of the TEAM.

Some folks have asked if I cracked on Jay. You bet, just like I cracked on “The Greek” and about 10-15 others……. because that’s what you do at a Roast. :o )

Heck. I even cracked on myself. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you better check your pulse. I still take credit for Elway’s scrambling abilty.

Just trade Cutler!!!!! bring in Brady Quinn and a pick or Rogers… this is getting really annoying he is just a crybaby.

  2. broncomaniac4life says:

100% agree!!!! how ’bout we have “fans bring the weapons match” ECW style. in this corner we have McNasty McDaniels. In the other corner we have the diaper wear’n gunslinger Jay Cutler. I got $$ that Cutler wins only because his mgr Cook brought in a foreign object into the ring (abdullah the butcher style). Scandalous!!!!! Punches n Bunches.

  3. brian_schneider says:

All I know is that Cutler thought he was better then “Cry Baby Rivers”, now their in the same class together.

  4. cutler6101 says:

cutler doesn’t have to show up to voluntary workouts and in that case cannot be fined….he hasn’t turned his back on the team and I am sure he is still talking to them but they aren’t going to come out about their business and who they talk to and I am sure that they aren’t allowed to talk about it…and everyone in here knows that this wouldn’t have gotten blown up if the media stayed out of it but they had nothing else to do N O T H I N G else to do got it…this has calmed down they keep running the same stuff if you haven’t noticed and now we are the ones adding fuel to the fire…it is best if we stop talking about it and move on. I believe cutler will be under center…and stop coming up with stuff unless you have talked to cutler on the phone yourself
and can prove it….he was lied to and a lot of other stuff that nobody knows about and even pat bowlen didnt know about the trade talk until mcd told him well yeah we were looking into it…he was not crying and some of us would prolly even over react more than he did…and lets be honest for a change cutler was not crying that is what fans of other organizations came up with. and I am tired of ppl saying that billy bob bell the patriots coach treats everyone the same because we all know that bill would NEVER EVER get rid of Tom Brady and if it came down to it I think bill would have to leave town before Tom Brady are you kidding me I live in Chatham, Mass. a little over an hour from boston…the fans here stand behind the qb more than the coach and trust in the players and playmakers more than someone who doesn’t touch the playing field…there are a lot of good coaches out there but a really talented qb or maybe more accurate a future hall of fame qb is hard to come by…you dont get those thrown your way to often..this is still a qb driven league not a coach…there are to many of them…you should trust someone you know more than someone you just meet and Jay Cutler wants to be a Denver Bronco and I believe McD will end up saying the right thing..nothing is to far gone to fix and you should never ever fix something that isn’t broken to begin with. And I hear a lot of ppl talk about cutler’s stats….HE IS IN HIS THIRD YEAR AND HAS GREAT STATS IF YOU ASK ME AND THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING…if every team had a jay cutler they would be winning more games and name another qb out there that has done what he done in just his third year…give him a break come on guys…John Elway is one of the greatest and so is Marino and in dan’s second season he took them to the super bowl and other than marino I haven’t seen a qb in a while put those numbers up…yeah Matt Ryan was good but still not cutler good. Even peyton manning sucked when he first started I think the colts his first season went 3-13…now if cutler would have had one of those seasons ppl would be talking differently about cutler and not trying to acquire him on their teams…look at terry bradshaw he struggled really bad and made 3x as many mistakes as cutler did..it took him a couple of seasons to regroup. I say cutler and Mcd can and will get over this because if us fans can get over a marriage with shanahan that ended in divorce then those two can come together! Lets try to not let fans of other teams and the media get us worked up and start dissing or qb because he still is OUR qb and if we sit here and talk about him what are the other players to think that we might turn on them too….where is the trust and respect for our players at? Cutler said that if it was mandatory he would be there let the guy relax and calm down. Why put the voluntary sticker on it if you didn’t care if they came or not and then give the player rift about it….just let it go and look at the bigger picture we are working toward one goal and one goal only and that is the Super Bowl! I thought anyway! Sorry for the long post and run-on sentences I haven’t posted in about 2 days and thought that some ppl might like to read this! At least you dont have to read something mike klis or bill williamson wrote…..my bad

  5. cutler6101 says:

dang so sorry that is really long guys guess I had a lot to say sorry! WOW

  6. Broncfalls says:

    Broncomania! I totally agree!

real quick! all of you that think this season is gone because we got a power hungry coach and a cry baby QB…..think again.

I’ll take a QB that can manage a game. (I want it to be Jay but getting sick of the crap) Oh and 1 thing on this Jay stuff….Don’t care if you think you’re the next HOF QB, this organization was great before you got here and will be after!

I’ll take our entire offense of line! AMAZING GROUP OF WARRIORS!!!!

Our WR’s – LOVE EACH ONE OF THEM

Defense – Champ for President! the rest of you better get your act together.

RB’s – are you kidding me? Come on! Hillis, ATV, Pittman, Hall, Jordan, Arrington, Buckhalter, etc….WEEEE! we’re having fun now….just take some tylenol and stay healthy.

Jay……..see where we’re going here? are you ready to throw this away? Wanna keep playing the trade card? I don’t care if Mac or CEO was wrong or lied…who cares, you don’t write the checks!! You could very well wind up playing for one of the worst organizations in NFL history!! You’re good son but not that good!

Lastly, my prediction is this….like it or not. This is going to end up badly for you. 3rd year QB’s won’t tarnish a organization like Denver’s it won’t happen. The bruise they got will heal and go away. Hear the chatter in the articles, the papers, the sports shows? It has you and your agent getting more and more of this “blame”

However, your stock and reputation as a QB in this league could be viewed differently. Can you tell me how many cocky, gun slinging, in it for me QB’s are still around? not to many and the ones that are play in Oakland!

Remember the quote “The Drive” your boss was running this team when it happened. Pretty neat huh? Oh, yeah….he was also running this team when he helped deliver us 2 back to back super bowls…just so you know.

I don’t agree with everything that goes on, but this is so over the top it’s ridiculous!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

Good point texark-fan, not reacting is the best approach. and thanks for the prayers.
something else came to me, I wonder who Bus Cook will represent in the draft? I hope The Broncos don’t pick any more of His clients! You can bet they will hold out for more money. ala Calvin Johnson at Cinn.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  12. texark-fan says:

well that is something, the QB and the PPG are both at 16.

  13. texark-fan says:

monodono, i don’t know how old you are but you might remember way back when. before the F/A times there was a pro bowl player up for a new contract and the team geve him a great deal of money with 1 stipulation. that was he get a new agent. sounds like something denver should.

  14. brian_schneider says:

These are some sad, sad times that we Broncos fans have fallen on. I don’t know what, I don’t know when, I don’t know who, but something desperately needs to be done about this situation. I don’t know who is to blame, I don’t know who is really the victim. Really the last time I felt this indifferent was when Elway retired, I was mad, sad, and happy.

  15. Bones1965 says:

Monodono: YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME FIRST OF ALL WHY DO YOU POST REMARK AFTER REMARK ITS TOO MUCH MAN. IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO OVER RANKINGS BASED ON A QB RATINGS THAN JOHN ELWAY WOULD BE PROBABLY 25th AND BRETT FAVRE 30th ALL TIME.

What you are saying is Seneca Wallace, Jeff Garcia, Matt Schab and Matt Cassell are better than Jay Cutler. By the way MR. Time of Possesion
The Broncos the “TEAM” you keep talking about had the 30 Ranked Defense in the NFL. ALSO MR 8-8 as you say is 25 years old. He has 2 Full seasons under his belt wait until he matures in a couple of years.

Everyone is entilted to ther feelings in this and Cutler most likely will be traded but all of you who are siding with Management and this very young coach have to realize that this will set back this franchise for some time and if you enjoy losing than I hope you get what you are looking for. Don’t give me Jay’s record because as Monodono has said this is TEAM and our defense on that Team has been Horrible since the AFC Championship Defense that lost to Pitt.

  16. lynch4prez says:

I agree with you Bones.. Football is the ultimate team sport, i hate it when people say ‘oh he hasnt won, or look at his record. the QB is only 1 of 45 other teammates on the field and sideline. Sure its the most important position but if the QB was responsible for every win and loss there shouldnt be team names.. instead only QB names

  17. Bones1965 says:

Monodono: William Moore had a horrible senior season and might fall to the third Round. He is not now considered the top safety Louis Delmas from Western Michigan is. Also they will not draft Vontae Davis as there first pick he is a huge head case just like his brother in San Francisco.
Jackson the DE from LSU will be there 1st Pick unless they pick Sanchez the QB from USC.

  18. 47rocksurworld says:

Broncfalls: I get your point that you and others are trying to make, yes Cutler should be looking at this situation and asking himself if he wants to be banished to the lions! There is a few points that are bugging me in this deal, who is lying and why. McDaniels stated to the Post that he didn’t try initiate a trade for Cassel he only fielded calls about a possible trade for Cutler. Then a little time later he admits to Peter King of Sports Illustrated that he indeed tried to initiate a trade for Cassel, but he was to late. How many fans have read articles where Bowlen stated that Jay was the face of the Franchise, and that Jay would be in the loop while looking for a coach. Is Jay and Bus Cook lying, I am not sure there is proof but there are some questions. My bottom line is simple I am flat tired of the lies, and the disinformation from all parties envolved. I want Cutler to be the QB, but if they are going to do something different get it over with some all fans can move on. If Mr. Bowlen decides that he can not live with these problems and cuts Jay loose so be it, but I ask that he atleast do they same for McDaniels if he can not put this team into the playoffs he gets on chance and one chance only. If you come in a take away the best QB we have had since Jake, you should only get one chance after that send Josh to the Lions. This is so stupid it is beyond belief, Cook appears to be a real snake in the grass but things are appearing any better in Dove Valley.

  19. monodono says:

Did any one read the new Top story on Carlton Powell?

According to NFLDraftScout.com, Powell finished his career as a Hokie as the only Division I-A player who held opponents to negative rushing yards on running plays directed at him — -13 yards on 106 attempts.

“If the ball is coming in my direction, I’m either going to make the play behind the line of scrimmage or at the line of scrimmage,” the 6-foot-3, 300-pound tackle said. “Not much gets past me.”

I can’t wait to see this guy on the field!

OK, say what you want about Cutler. He’s definitely got his share in this whole fiasco there is no doubt about it.

But watch this clip and then honestly tell me that you still want to trade him.

At the end of the day folks it’s all about just one thing. Winning! I don’t see anyone giving us a better chance of winning than Cutler behind center.

    GET TO WORK CUTLER!

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

  24. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

I hope you’re right monodono. But don’t you think he’s got some serious weight and his agent knows it?

Simms is making more money than Cutler, something just isn’t right with that.

I think the only thing that keeps Cutler here is a new contract and if I were Bowlen, this is a business of winning, I would sign a new contract with the stipulation that Cutler fires Cook.

Bowlen has to do whatever he can to keep Cutler.

  25. broncomaniac4life says:

yo-where do you get your stats monodono? impressive. I’d take Quinn over Cutler. Quinn’s ego can fit inside the conference room. If we change our O into a system instead of a gunslinger mentality that Cutler has then it’s a mute point. Soooo much rap ’bout Cutler. What ’bout the D? excited ’bout Dawkins+Hill+Davis??? think Goodman will be an upgrade over Bly? standard. How many games before the D plays as 1 cohesive unit? I say 4. Draft will be huge. Not sure if we’re going NT or Edge rusher in the 1st rd. I have bashed Cutler as much as the next guy, but…if McD doesn’t draft 90% D then I’ll bash McD TONS more….1 mock draft has us gett’n Beanie Wells in the 1st rd. Are you freak’n kidd’n me?!?! keep it real, broncos country…Punches n Bunches

  26. texark-fan says:

With the new coach sayin all players are treated the same. witch means so is the depth chart. we could be seeing alot of our great rookies from last year taking over the D side of the ball by the end of the year. this with the few changes (3-4 and more) will be something to look forward to. i think we make the play-offs this year, even if it is as a wild card team. and with our sch. we will have played all the others in the play-offs so we might even go deep.

  27. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

broncomaniac4life – “I’d take Quinn over Cutler. Quinn’s ego can fit inside the conference room.”

You gotta be crazy. Yes I agree that Quinn plus the 5th pick overall is really the only deal out there that is fair for the Broncos, but Quinn has thrown less than 100 balls for 500 some odd yards total in his career.

It’s a crap shoot with him! We don’t know how he is going to turn out! Look at Leinart!

No, we KNOW what we have in Cutler. I’m telling all of you Cutler haters out there that want to trade him off because he is an arrogant cry baby, that if he ends up leaving here we could see a downward losing streak the likes we’ve never seen in Denver before.

    We gotta keep this kid!!!!

The Superbowl champion QB was ranked 24th? Oh to have had a defense. Any defense, and this mess never happens.

  29. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

Oh I agree I think we will be fine regardless if Jay leaves or not because I do have faith in McD, however he is also unproven as a Head Coach. I do believe Quinn has a lot of potential and he is a lot more laid back than Jay.

I just feel at the end of the day Jay should be a Bronco and that it is possible if he leaves we could regret it.

aSharpeIdea_84-great clip I look at it this way, they keep Cutler and it is 10 more years of clips like that with Marshall and Royal, and hopefully Scheffler. They get rid of him and all that is all over and by the time they find another decent QB the rest of the O is out of their prime.

The time is now these guys are all young and can spend their entire careers together dominating!

has anyone else noticed how similar looking Jabar Gaffney and Champ Bailey are?!?! CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

  35. imready says:

monodono, I agree with you 100 percent on Carlton Powell! I was so disappointed when he got hurt last year I could have balled. He may just be the answer to out woes on the d-line , I can’t wait to see what he’s got!

  36. 07elway says:

    Okay I waited long enough.

Those of you who agreed with Bowlen back in December to let Shanny go have absolutely no right to be complaining about the Cutler issue. You agreed with his ridiculous decision and now its backfiring on him with all this drama that he’s not taking care of. Mr. Bowlen, HELLOOOO you’re the owner, you wanted change, take charge and deal with it!!!!!! And people wonder why I don’t like change… hmm, I don’t know, cause crap like this happens. Gee what was I thinking!! Again none of us had any control, its all Bowlen’s decision that’s why if anything wrong happens, which it is, its ALL on him. Everyone that just praised Bowlen for letting go of Shanny… how do you like his decision now??? Only a fool would agree with what he’s done. Cutler didn’t betray anyone, Bowlen did… he betrayed the entire organization including the fans. As a completely dedicated fan, I feel betrayed by Mr. Bigshot and his posse for screwing things up BIG time.

Pretty sure I care more about this team than Bowlen does… yeah I’m not perfect but I sure wouldn’t have made really dumb decisions that lead to this kind of press. Right about now, I’m loving all the years the Broncos have been kept out of major headlines, when we weren’t talked about much… I’ll take all that back over this mess. Not all press is good press! We don’t need this and this all could’ve been avoided.

    With faith…

hay coop, maybe if you printed this story about THE GREEK again we might have some thing to say about him. i have been watching the broncos a few years longer than he has been there. and never realized what it took to do his kind of job. thanks.

  39. Cutlerizer says:

07Elway, You need your own blog. A fan that knows.

  40. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

    07elway – I hear your point, and it’s a good point.

But in all fairness, we will have to wait and see what transpires between now and December to make a true assessment of the decision to fire Shanahan and bring in McD.

Even if Cutler leaves, and I am hoping big time that he doesn’t, (see my previous posts), we will still have to wait and see what happens during the season.

Anything until then is really speculation because the truth is we really don’t know what kind of coach McD is going to be or how successful he will be. We don’t even know what Cutler is going to be like under his system or even with a different team for that matter.

I agree this is totally frustrating. I am a HUGE Shanahan fan, and in fact I think he’s got another Super Bowl win or two left in the tank, but not with this team. His time here had run it’s course and so I stand behind Bowlen’s decision to fire him and go after a new start.

I agree completely with you though that now he must take the bull by the horns and get control of this situation with Cutler and the only way I see that happening is stepping in and signing him to a new contract with the condition that he fires Bus Cook and gets a new agent.

Then, he and McD have no choice but to work together, and I have a very strong feeling that the two of them could be magic together, if they can put aside this debacle and move on. If I were Bowlen, I would make sure they had no choice to move on since Bowlen obviously wants both of them here and he signs both of their paychecks.

    Well said 07elway!

  41. 07elway says:

aSharpeIdea_84 – I also hear what you’re saying as well.

I think McD & Cutler could make an awesome coach-QB team and could lead this team together to great moments. And everything going on IS speculation… I know that’s what I’ve been saying this entire time. Bowlen is the one I’m furious with right now. Like I said he’s the owner, he’s the one that made the mother of all decisions this offseason that created with wild fire and he’s practically running away from HIS problem. I hate it when people do this… couldn’t tick me off anymore. They make a decision like the one with Shanny, it creates one earthquake after another and then they run away from their own decision because it had consequences. He’s not taking responsibility for what he’s done… and he’s the only one to blame!!! He was a one man show on this, now he’s trying to make Cutler look bad. Yeah that’s all part of the speculation and bad press but why is he letting this happen is what I don’t get. I couldn’t be anymore confused. My head is just swimming with fury.

And someone somwhere with a brain needs to give Cutler a new contract, he’s totally worth it and we’d get to keep him. Why is Bowlen being a wuss about this?? He wants Chamionships, well I certainly don’t see him fighting for that opportunity. I would hope if they already have something brewing they’d say something, but that would be just too much to ask. God forbid he keep us fans up to date! I don’t think I want to find out what he does next to really tick me off… will be the tip of the iceberg, mine as well push me off! This really irks me… GRRRRRR!!!

I’m mostly interested to see what happens between these 2 (McD & Cutler) during the rest of offseason. That relationship has got to get repaired. That was my biggest concern, my only concern really, when Shanny got let go and now its happening. I wish I was proven wrong… for once I would’ve greatful to be proven wrong. Can’t believe I just said that. Shanny & Cutler had something real close to Shanny & Elway… this team needs that. Definitely isn’t going to happen overnight with all this going on and will take months to repair.

Before FA began, Cutler publicly stated he was impressed with McD, now this happens. He needs to get back to that point of admiring this coach and this is a 2-way street… the exact same thing goes for McD. I have no clue what he thinks of Cutler but respect has to be EARNED, you just can’t hand it out. These 2 need mutual respect and this might get fixed. Even through this really annoying mess, for some reason I still believe this team will get through this. Have no clue why, just Bronco crazy I guess.

You made some great points aSharpeIdea_84.
And Cutlerizer, I’d love to have my own blog. But right now, not sure I’d want to work for Mr. B… not exactly my favorite person right now. Gonna have to earn my respect back.

yo aSharpeIdea? how many balls did Cassel throw before last year? he didn’t see dirt+grass in college+NFL because he was always 2nd string behind legit QB’s. Guess what? McD made that kid into a baller. He went through growing pains. Standard. Cassel played very good later in the season. I think Quinn has great upside+has a coach who’s proven that he can take an Unknown+turn that QB into a winner. Everyone is hitt’n the panic button ’bout Cutler. Wrong. Cutler has great tools, but if his head isn’t in Denver I doubt he’ll play well. We’ll be fine w/out him. I hope we trade him. If we don’t that locker room will be divided. Chemistry is KEY in team sports. Football is the ultimate team sport. We need everyone to “toe the line”+follow the chain of command. you might not like McD. Oh well. He’s the coach. We have to deal w/it. McD will call the shots whether we like it or not. am I right or am I right? Keep it real, broncos country. Punches n Bunches

  43. monodono says:

I think Pat Bowlen has taken control by putting the Man He wanted in charge and backing Him. This is the direction He has chosen and He is backing His Coach which is the right thing to do.

aSharpeIdea_84 But don’t you think he’s got some serious weight and his agent knows it? To that I say He has some leverage but if Cutler doesn’t show up for the manditory meetings and minicamp The TEAM can treat Him as a hold out and He will lose more money.
    and to,
“Simms is making more money than Cutler, something just isn’t right with that.”
Cutler is not makeing less than Simms, Cutler has bonuses that pay Him more but His salary is less.
    and lastly,
“I think the only thing that keeps Cutler here is a new contract and if I were Bowlen, this is a business of winning, I would sign a new contract with the stipulation that Cutler fires cook.”
I really like the fire bus cook part, but I have to disagree with the new contract as the only thing that keeps Cutler here. I say make Him sit the bench until He comes around let Him see what He is missing and playout his contract thats what a Contract is for, it’s binding Cutler stik to it do your job and do it well and you will be compesated for your good work. stop screwing the TEAM the FANS and OWNERSHIP.

I’m still on Cutler’s side, always will be because I know we need him. If I were Bowlen I’d bend over backwards to keep that kid. Now I completely understand where monodono is coming from… Bowlen, McD, no one just can’t hand him everything or he’ll never be a leader. A leader goes out on the limb all on his own and empowers people to follow him. I just read a book (I don’t like to read but I had to) about leadership and its something everyone on this team needs to read. Bowlen, McD, X, Nolan, Cutler heck even Dawkins to become a stronger leader than he already is. There’s always room for improvement. We do need an offensive leader and Cutler has it in him and I honestly think he knows it too… that’s not cocky, its confident that he not only knows he can do his job and do it effectively but be the leader we need. He isn’t THE team but he’s what we need to get places and win Championships. However, he IS the QB for us. Have any of you noticed he’s the only QB from his draft class that still has a job, a starting job?!?! He is it for us and he’s managed to be the most successful QB (so far) from the ’06 draft… that should speak volumes about him as a person, leader and football player. We can’t afford to lose him and spend the next 8 years doing another QB search… not if we want to win Championships!

Monodono – I too still want to TEAM up as well and have our own blog. A blog for the fans, by the fans!!! Doesn’t get any better than that. As you well know I’m all for debate, heck I’ll start it! I’m all for a little argument!! We’ll always be Broncos Family… bro, brother, bretheren? 1 of the 3.
