The GREEK Roast, wonderful man, we all LOVE!

March 15th, 2009 - 8:48pm by mark_cooper

The fundraiser was for Dani’s Foundation that raises money for pediatric sarcomas, which is a rare form of cancer that strikes children and young adults.

It was a comical roasting of one of the greatest men in Broncos history, Steve Antonopulos. The Greek. The hosts were Ron Zappolo and Dave Logan. The evening started out with the Mayor cracking on “The Greek”, then Vic Lombardi, Rich Karlis, Billy Thompson, me, Keith Burns, Claudie Minor and Gary Zimmerman taking shots at him, along with many others in the crowd, as Roasts are suppose to be. Zappolo and Logan chimed in occasionally between speakers too, taking shots back at some of us that fingered them out a few times.

The event, like all Roasts, ended with “The Greek” getting the last shots/cracks in at all of us individually and then on many of the alumni in the crowd. He was hilarious cracking back on everyone.

It was a wonderful evening for a wonderful cause for a man I love. Steve kept me and many of my teammates, current and past players on the field and in the league, probably longer than some of us could have without him. He is loved dearly.

The side note that has been written about is how Jay wasn’t there. No one actually expected him there with the media circus that’s been going on that’s hopefully cleared up tomorrow so we can get back to the main agenda in Broncotown… winning football games, period. He made a donation to the cause, and I respect that. Thanks Jay, that was the right thing to do.

Like I said before, people make mistakes… you – me – the President – all of us. I can agree to disagree with anyone and still get along… that’s what we do for the betterment of the TEAM.

Some folks have asked if I cracked on Jay. You bet, just like I cracked on “The Greek” and about 10-15 others……. because that’s what you do at a Roast. :o )

Heck. I even cracked on myself. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you better check your pulse. I still take credit for Elway’s scrambling abilty.

im sorry to say this but im not with jay on this one. This is McD’s team and he needs to come in and demand respect from his team especially since he is so young, and he needs to stay strong because cutler is trying to undermine him. Jay, please man up and come to denver and stay here!!! WE NEED U!!! Denver Nation loves u and we need u to b our QB. Fire that jackass agent of yours cause he isnt doing anything but throwing salt on the already huge wound. U and McD and only u two need to sit down and figure this out. Give him the respect he deserves and he will give it back to u!!1

  2. Broncbeat says:

Yes southstander I understand and agree. Elway is a one of a kind. That’s what also made him so great. He came to this league, saw Jack Lambert ready to kill him on the feild and realized he needed to be stronger and work harder if he was going to be the best. ONE OF A KIND. That being said I think we all need (including Cutler) to stop comparing the two on talent or maturity. Every one handles life different. So I too need to stop comparing weather it be talent or how they handle a situation.

  3. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

Get on over to http://www.NFL.com and vote if you want to keep Cutler. The numbers right now are in favor of trading him. I vote in the minority. We gotta keep this guy!!!

What should the Broncos do with Jay Cutler?

Trade him, things have gotten too ugly 69%

Keep him, they can’t afford to lose their star QB 31%

Here is Paul Burmeister’s take from an NFL Network chat.

Here’s my read on the Jay Cutler situation: I understand why he’s upset, or why his feelings were initially hurt. I would even understand if he would have gone into Josh McDaniels’ office right away and had it out with him. But get over it. And don’t go public with it. It’s hard to imagine Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Drew Brees or Donovan McNabb creating this sort of scene.

The sentiment is easy to comprehend … but the reaction is a little tough to take.

  5. mark_cooper says:

We hit an all-time high for responses to this one wow!, and the feelings are as mixed as they can be. I’d love to answer them all, one at a time, but with this many, I’ll talk globally about what’s been said.

Early in the blog Reggie Rivers article was mentioned so I went there and pulled a couple lines from it. Reggie like I played and Reggie’s in the media so he has to be careful how he phrases things, I capitalized a few words as the say more than they actually read, here they are:

This dispute is dangerous for Cutler’s career, too. He’s SUPPOSED to be the leader of this team, and at some point he has to decide whether it’s more important to keep fighting this personal crusade or to step up and ACT like a team leader.

Cutler also risks alienating other teams. For weeks, Cutler’s TANTRUM has been a story in the national media and that could affect his future in the NFL. Everyone knows that Cutler is an extremely talented quarterback, but how many coaches want a signal caller who will frequently and publicly defy them?

But now, there’s probably a much shorter list of teams who are prepared to deal with the TANTRUMS and PR FIASCOS that Cutler might bring with him.

These comments mean a lot more than Jay understands. What I’m getting at is this. It’s a TEAM sport. Jay was barely touched last year by defensive lineman. I think we had an all-time low number of sacks and hurrys behind what could prove to be a great offensive line for years to come. So let’s not pretend he had a great year all by himself. He was covered up with some pretty solid talent….remember the TEAM aspect of this.

In another organization he might not be so lucky and if you understand football, you understand that hitting a QB in the face, can make a good one, mediocre fast. I’ve seen it happen for years.

Reggie’s comments saying Jay is SUPPOSED to be the leader and TANTRUMS, is that any different than me cracking on him at a Roast, hmmmm.

A Roast is a Roast and it was for a good cause to raise money and create awareness for the cause, don’t confuse it with the media. It’s not.

Can all this be worked out? SURE.
Did John Elway show up everyday whether he liked Reeves or not? YES he did. Do all players love their coaches. NO.
Do they continue to play the best they can? Yes.
    Why? It’s a TEAM sport.

Let’s keep things within reality. Do you love your boss and your work? Do you show up everyday……thank you. No diifferent.

Like I’ve said, mistakes get made and they can be reconciled…it might take some time. We’ll see soon enough.

    Mondono…prayers for your granddaughter!

I’m a fan of the Broncos regardless who’s at the QB spot.

  7. thundersrevenge says:

It was several post’s up, but you’re right MONODONO.

Cutler was pissed off when Shanny got fired. However I think that he wanted to keep playing for the Broncos when Bowlen told him that Bates would still be around.
This is where it went awry. Cutler believed Bowlen that Bates would still be around. How often is it that a new Head Coach comes to a team and doesn’t change the OC and DC. Cutler bought into the “Bates is staying” and this sent him to the edge.
Then the trade talks occur and Cutler gets pushed over the edge.

All of this tension happened because Cutler did not want the system to change and was not mentally prepared for it to change.

If I had just finished the Delorean in time none of this would have happened :)

  8. thundersrevenge says:

    Well said Coop!
I just hope that the brilliance is on the way.

  9. HomeTeam007 says:

Coop: Well said. Thanks for the blog and the blanced view. Here is to the Broncos capitalizing on this media momentum, making the right decisions personally, and winning more games than they lose.

PS: Fishing is nuts in south park, go today!

    ORANGE CRUSH!!!!

  10. 07elway says:

Great couple of posts there Coop. I still don’t see how Jay is throwing tantrums about this.

I am first and foremost a Bronco fan, but this TEAM needs Jay. End of story.

All these comments even from nfl.com are all PURE SPECULATION!!!! Not one of us knows what true and what’s not. And of all people, monodono, I’m shocked at you buying in to all this. Obviously, this whole situation is getting the worst out of some of us, myself included. However, I REFUSE to believe speculation because its not confirming anything at all. Its nothing but gossip bouncing back and forth to both parties, deciding who’s the bad guy. I just hate that this is happening.

I am done with this, till all this crap is over with. That’s probably easier said than done but I’m passed being p’od about this. Too furious to say anything more till something is resolved. I’ll continue to be a diehard Bronco fan no matter what happens till the day I die but if they let Jay go… I can only say one thing. Mr. Bowlen should kiss his dreams of more Championships goodbye and he knows it, yet he’s being a baby about it. Oh here I go again, this just isn’t worth my frustration.

One las thing, you know what’s really funny about this. We all know (or should know) that this is a TEAM sport like Coop said. Cutler is only wanting that from these 3 amigos ganging up on him. He wants to know that he’s wanted in Denver and that they’re not going to betray him… to late for that. Now we’ve got trust issues going on, definitely don’t blame the guy, for very reasons like this I don’t trust anyone. But I do trust Cutler to be the QB & leader of this team and we need that. Jay needs to come halfway and meet these guys… AND Bowlen, McD & X need to do the same. Its a TEAM sport right… that goes for on & off the field. The 4 of them need to compromise but Jay is no crybaby, he’s no whimp, he’s angry and he has every right to be. By McD’s actions, he was being told he wasn’t wanted yet McD knows better but he’s being stubborn New England style. He wants it done his way, that’s not gonna fly either. ITS A TEAM SPORT AND IT TAKES A TEAM EFFORT!!!!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  11. Cutlerizer says:

I’ve been eliminated from being a “real Bronco fan.”

  12. NY_BroncoMan says:

Coop…SORRY BRO >> YOUR DEAD WRONG homie !!

First off McDaniels is the LEADER of this team..That’s why it’s all Screwed up right now. Cutler is under McDaniels leadership. Shannahan had everyones respect and every player busted thier A$$ for him. Just had a hoorible D coordinator and inconsistancy last few years but leadership and player respect was not an issue.

I’ll keep saying it…RESPECT IS EARNED not given by mere position! Any boss who lies to his employees and breeches thier trust (before ever even earning no less!!) is an inexperienced leader. Don’t think for one minute that other players are not questioning Mcdaniels leadership ability right now.

..And if Reeves did that crap to Elway, I would NOT be suprised at all if he asked for a trade back then. Elway made comments about reeves and it was no secret. Who did Bowlen chose Reeves or Elway?? ..thank you

  13. Iamthe56 says:

Why did we ever get rid of Larry Coyer he was the best damn cordinator we ever had he made everyone better let me run some names by you Bill Romanowski, Al Wilson, John Mobely, Trevor Pryce, even Nick Ferguson was good under Coyer, Romanowski himself said letting Coyer go would be the worst mistake the organization could make

  14. Bones1965 says:

Monodono I do hope your Grandaughter is also ok.

  15. monodono says:

I want Cutler to stay. I want Cutler to show up and prove He is commited to The TEAM. I want The TEAM to unite. I want this to be over.
    But it’s not…
I promise to stop bashing Bus Cook until what I’ve said happens, and it will, and when it does I will say I told you so. This is just the beginning of the game Cook play’s.

OldSouthStander said it best “The reality is that the Head Coach, no matter who he is on any team, owns the football and you play by his rules or you’re gone. The Broncos offense and defense have to learn an entirely new set of plays, formations, et al. The only way any player can maximize his learing experience is by attending every single meeting, OTA or whatever be it voluntary or mandantory. Any player who doesn’t, has indicated his lack of commitment to the team. Elway hated Reeves with a passion, but he NEVER, NEVER missed any chance to learn the system better to improve the TEAMS chances of winning a Super Bowl. In the offseasons before the Broncos two Super Bowl wins, NOT ONE PLAYER missed any scheduled activity. While doing this is obviously no guarantee of winning a Super Bowl, it does show you how essential you work as a TEAM. Those Broncos committed to being part of the Bronco TEAM are there. Those that aren’t, AREN’T”

    and Cutler is NOT.

I guess we need a new subject… COOP?

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  16. George Bush says:

This all comes down to trust.

In a team you need to trust your team mates, and the team needs to trust the coach.

As soon as McDaniels showed to both Jay Cutler and the fans that he was untrustworthy then the rot took hold.

The Broncos cannot have an untrustworthy coach and it is now time for Bowlen to take charge and rescue the situation. How can he do this without getting rid of the coach? All I can suggest is that he acts as a mediator and sees both parties separately and tells them straight exactly what he expects of them, that they need to respect each other and that in future there must be no issues which can be construed as lacking trust. Then get them both together to go through their issues and find a resolution in order that they can work together.

Everybody talks about professional football being a business, but first and foremost it is a sport. The fact that so many players see it as such a callous and alarmingly inhuman business shows me that it is on the wrong track and we need to get back to the basics of faith, humility and trust, not boastful egotism and cynicism.

  17. NY_BroncoMan says:

I agree with “George Bush” (wow, i never thought i’d say that about the president lol :)

While i’m not against free agency, it sure did change a lot of the loyalty, longevity and team aspect of the game. It would have been aweful for Bronco Fans if Elway had been traded, or currently if P Manning, LT, Rothlesburger or T Brady with there respective cities and fan base.

CALL ME CRAZY, but i believe there are certain franchise type players that are just NOT supposed to be traded. They’re supposed to be the face of the franchise and retire there….or at least untill they’re past their prime (Rice, Farve, etc). ..unless of course they DON’T want to be there or they do something completely unreasonable…which Cutler did not do.

He’s supposed to be a lifetime Bronco people !!!!!

  18. broncos14441 says:

Haahahahaha! Remember when we would get mad that the Broncos never got talked about. Now, the broncos are finally getting talked about, for the wrong reason! I always said it was good to be under the radar. So, everyone who is mad about this whole thing but wanted us to be in the news, you got your wish!

Anyways, I just had to say that.

Next, this isn’t Cutlers fault. This isn’t McDaniels fualt. And it’s not Mr. Bowlen’s fault. It is the MEDIA’S fault. Without the media there is no more “he said-he said” crap. There are no people to tell us what we need to think. And there is no McJayGate!!!!! I’m pissed so i’m gone. I’ll post again tomorow to see how you ripped on me.

    MEDIA SUCKS!

    GO BRONCOS!

  19. broncofannsd says:

07elway and George Bush – great posts!

NFL is a business, but every player needs to be able to trust and believe in the person next to them. Coach McD and Bowlen betrayed that trust and created this mess. For those of you complaining about Cutler and the way he has handled this situation, who are you to judge? You are not in his shoes, so don’t pretend to know how he feels. I would be equally upset if the organization I worked for was lying to me. Regardless of how you feel about Cutler’s behavior, Bowlen and McD are to blame for this fiasco. Those of you that are questioning Cutler’s leadership, take a look at McD because it all starts there. Cutler was committed to this team and the community of Denver, but his commitment was betrayed. That is the bottom line.

We as Bronco fans should be united and not divided. Hopefully the organization will come to a conclusion, whatever conclusion that might be, so we can all move on.

    GO BRONCOS!

  20. Ikiratuki says:

How about just leasing Cutler instead of trading. The highest bidding team gets Cutler for a certain amount of time (1st half of season?) to see his talent in that system. The contract consists of a signing bonus and whatever was on his existing contract. After the lease is up the team he was leased to can buy him or the offer can be matched by the Broncos. Hopefully you can see my logic. This solution is good in many ways, especially for Cutler. Of course this idea is meant to be a joke but wouldn’t that be interesting.

I hope this post breaks some tension.

  21. johnnycolorado says:

This all looks too familiar to me: Oakland Raiders, champions, loosing seasons, change to veteran players, many coach changes, team gets worse, Al Davis responsible. Denver Broncos, champions, loosing seasons, change to veteran players, future…many coach changes, team gets worse. Al Davis Jr. oops Pat Bowlen responsible. So sad for us fans who really care for the players. I loved watching players develop into Great Denver Broncos. Now it seems it is only about winning without development. Too bad. NFL going down hill. It’s a business. Boy that is for sure. I hope this new UFL can get the NFL back on course.

  22. Ikiratuki says:

I say that the theme song to this situation is:
This is the end (for you my friend) – Anti-Flag

lol it started to play in my above post.

  23. papacy808 says:

Jay Cutler traded to Cleveland for Brady Quinn and their 1st round pick 5th overall? That gives the Broncos the 5th and the 12th pick. Just an idea. Brady Quinn would fit in McD’s scheme. Any thoughts?

  24. 15themarshall15 says:

it all gonna suck they all suck and learn how to spell its pat bowlen and brady quinn sucks they are dumb we will suck for years if they trade jay with him superbowl without him last in the division

  25. Ikiratuki says:

If the trade does happen, I hope we trade to Cleveland for Quinn, Rogers, and a 2nd or 3rd round pick. That would, in my opinion be the best trade.

  26. BRONCOHOLICO says:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9345936/Cutler's-agent-Cooks-up-another-drama

    Interesting story, off MSN.com

It states that Cutler wanted & seeked a trade as soon as Mike Shannahan was let go & jeremy Bates was fired.

I still feel he is our best option at QB, for the near & distant future. However, it doesn’t help but give me a sickening feel in my stomach to know he wasn’t on board with the TEAM from the start. Bus Cook now just found a way to make him the victim, exploit The Denver Broncos Organization on it’s ONE error & cash in on the opportunity for his own profit!

if Cutler & McD were able to meet one on one, no1 else, I honestly believe that this would have never escalated to what it has.

Im only speaking for myself when I say I would LOoOOve to have Jay-C back in bronco blue. The fathead I have of him is living proof of that. But I will tear it down just as quickly as I will turn my back on him as a fan if he is no longer a member of The Denver Broncos

There is no I in team. If you are so ANGRY that they attempted to trade you without justification, show up to training, & play your heart out so that they kick themselves for ever even considering such a scenario!

    Long Live Denver Broncos.

  27. 38yrfan says:

bolin…..bowlen… you get the point….if it aint broke…dont fix it….BOWLEN..did i get it right??? showed his true colors the day he fired shanahan..loyalty means nothing. you get what you give, karma is a b–ch…

  28. 38yrfan says:

dont get me wrong, im sure hes fun to have around on the holidays, but theres a reason new england is not shedding any tears over his departure…bowlen may of had his heart in the right place. but he really laid an egg with this mcdaniels deal. somewhere theres a franchise just licking there chops at the thought of shanahan running there show..

  34. lynch4prez says:

The best option for the Broncos is: DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Dont make any trades, dont talk any trades, dont answer any phones about trades, dont make any calls about trades. If Cutlers still on the team by draft day, he’s staying here next year. If both sides give this enough time to cool off it can work out. Cutler is too passionate and too much of a competitor to sit out a year for holdout.

  35. kase78matt says:

mc d hold on to him 4 a year if he does good and we win he’ll forget it all

  36. imready says:

Hey Coop . just read the report of the 4 fishing football players lost at sea. If they had cut the anchor rope they would be here today. How heavy my heart is for their families, peace be with them.

  37. airbornebronc says:

I see opinions all over the board, but I see little on how you guys are tired of the team treating the fans like piss ants. They have not addressed this situation at all and so all we have is the back and forth in blogs like this going at each others throats and getting personal in the process. Good thing everyone is not in the same room or there would be one heck of a brawl and we all would be in the poky.

If this team thinks so little of us, then to hell with them. I guess I will start using my broncos shirts for personal hygiene. This organization has shown little loyalty to coaches, players and now the fans. Who do they think they are to treat us like this. We are the ones who ultimately pay the bills and they insist on letting us stew as they play my-way-or-the-highway. I am real close to choosing the highway unless they start addressing our concerns soon.

Call me a fair-weather fan if you wish, I do not care. I support organizations that value my participation and care if my cheeks are warming the seats on Sunday afternoons. It seems as if they expect us to be happy with their decisions no matter what and to simply cheer loudly whenever they want.If the organization lacks integrity, then they are bound to reap what they sow and I hope them all the best. As I do for all of you.

This entire fiasco has been so avoidable, but the organization lacks the basic leadership skills needed to lead a dog on a leash.

Jay has been somewhat immature in his reaction, but I can understand his misgivings given his tendency to unquestioned loyalty. If someone sold you out as has the front office did in this case, is salary a good enough reason to trust the organization from that time forward? I trust enough of a reason to ask for a trade? I am not in Jay’s shoes, but I imagine I would give time to the same ideas. I place a high priority on integrity and I hope he is taking a stand for the right reasons.

You folks have a great airborne day and I look forward to seeing how this mess works out. The future of my broncos gear is at stake and the entire lot hopes not to end up on the wrong end of this deal.

You to BRONCOHOLICO thanks for the link. The Truth will come out and it will most likely back fire on Jay unfortunatly.

I sympathize with everyone who is mad at Coach McDaniels, He made a mistake and no one wants to see Cutler go, I dont want Cutler to go. To Villainize McDaniels is just what Bus Cook wants you to do, thats Cooks leverage. All I’m sayin is don’t let Him USE YOU!

Some say Pat Bowlin is to blame, but I believe He is doing what He thinks is best for His TEAM and standing By His Coach, and last time I checked it was Cutler who was NOT at the meetings showing His commitment to His TEAMMATES, The Fans, or Ownership.

OK, I for one want this drama to end. McDaniels, go to Cutler, be a man and come to some sort of compromise. We all know that anyone can be traded or dealt at anytime. However, that hardly includes your star QB. My God!!! How has this spun so far outta control? How has the ownership accepted this from a coach who has no back-up plan. I do not wanna hear Cutler for Quinn or Cutler for anyone at this point. Quinn if you all recall choked against the Broncos last year when they needed him most. Cutler is more mature ( AS AN NFL QB ), Quinn still has to go through the Growing pains. Come on guy’s, Stop acting like boys and be men. McDaniels, it will be your head on a platter if you allow Cutler to get away. You started this, now fix it. Enough said. Cutler please stay. The only people who are voting to trade you are not Broncos fans. I agree with the public apology bit. Even leaders sometimes have to admit when they are wrong. Now is the perfect time to do so. Time is wasting away.

  45. texark-fan says:

i know lets talk about the unfair fines that R gooooodellll gives players

All of us know at this point that Cutler traded for anyone is a loss for the team, and im 100% sure everyone in the Broncos organization knows it too. What Jay, Josh, Xanders, and Bowlen.. and Cook need to do is just chill out, give it some time.. cooler heads prevail. This team is so close to being an elite contender, WITH JAY. If we lose him, we may be searching another 8 years for that special QB we all have been waiting for, if not longer. Jay, in his third year, set 3 franchise passing records, he’s our guy.
