The Good, Bad and the Ugly

October 2nd, 2011 - 10:20pm by mark_cooper

Saw it all today! Good defense at times, sacks by Von Miller, great catches by Decker and Lloyd and others. Another 100+ yard rushing day by McGahee and some good offensive line play.

The bad, playing the former Super Bowl Champs and their offensive firepower/flamethrowing QB without Champ and all our young defensive backs except Dawk.

The Ugly, was turnover and penalties.

Can’t compete at this level with Turnovers and Penalties…but again I saw a lot of good. I like the nucleus and with some more experience and depth and drafts I ABSOLUTELY think we are on the right track. It’s winning one battle at a time, not so much the game with a new coaching staff, new team, and all the young players we have.

I’m optimistic…are you??
GO BRONCOS!!

I’m with you, Coop. They’re moving in the right direction. I’m not going to bother with the never-ending debate about the QB position – everyone knows all of the arguments on both sides anyway.

As for the rest of the game, you have to like the O-Line’s performance as well as McGahee, Lloyd and Decker (really like watching Decker pancake CB’s on running plays!). Von looked great and Elvis was doing OK early but wore out as the game went on. As we all know, defensive depth is probably our biggest problem and the Packers exposed it by spreading us out so we had to play Harris and Carter a lot more than we probably would have liked. Then, once they’d worn out our d-line by making them rush the passer over and over, Starks found some room late. I think this game might have been very different if we’d had Champ in there to shut down someone and help direct traffic in the back end.

So, what did we learn? Hmmmm…. take care of the ball, rotate more guys on the d-line to keep them fresh, work on schooling the young DB’s, add more depth (through the draft, in the offseason)… nothing shocking there.

In the meantime, Phyllis Rivers and the Bolts are coming in and you know they’re going to take a page out of Green Bay’s playbook and pressure our back end, so we gotta get Champ healthy AND get those young guys to make fewer mistakes in the secondary. Do that, take care of the ball, and get Von and Elvis loose to punish the punk QB and the next game is absolutely winnable….

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Tell me if that would be ok Coop, and I’ll e-mail you a pic of the “Orange Crush” in an attachment to your Bronco e-mail address, what would that be? If you like it you can post it for the guys to see.

1st time caller, lol……. Fox is full of B…S….!! Just tell it like it is. They stink and They don’t want Tebow to play. We are hoping to get LUCK y!

  10. johnnywildfire says:

So there I was…..Trying to figure out why our coach would chance getting his ‘Best chance to win’ deep into the 4th quarter on a game that he can not win? Is he so afraid to be found out an idiot by bringing in the backups who might just do better than the practice qb that he has hailed as being so much above the rest. Why the heck do you chance getting failorton hurt if he is so precious to you?

  11. areferee says:

The anger and malaise that is overwhelming the Bronco fan-base on this and other Websites is NOT just a product of the team’s losing, as the coaching staff has been too dismissively quick to assess, but is as much a product of the coaches ignoring common sense.

The Bronco fans, taken as a whole, ARE knowledgeable and sophisticated in NFL football enough to know when consistently poor decisions are being made on the field and when decisions are being made that are not in the better interests of those that support the team.

It is little wonder then, that financial and emotional support for the team will continue to dwindle in the way that began some years ago when all of the poor decisions began. Many of us perceive no change in that overall condition, notwithstanding some of the public relations maneuvers that have been enacted by the new executives.

Relations with the Bronco’s “public” is not an executive science, but an art, a covenant that is SHARED by the men on the field, coaches and players, and the men, women and children that pay to support them.

That covenant is continuing to be broken.

  12. johnnywildfire says:

The broncos go 4 – 12 this year if orton keeps playing. That will get them the 4th pick over all. The 3 teams in front of them don’t really need qb’s so they stand a good chance of getting their Luck that I’m thinking Elway and Fox believe will be the Broncos Messiah. Maybe they are hoping to keep Tebow shelved and peddle him in trade. They can sell the success he had in his 3 games as a rookie and without playing him this year they can also can the idea that he is still very healthy and will be a 3rd year man and not an inexperienced rookie. Orton will be off his ‘rofl’ contract, which frees up a lot of money that they are wasting this year and moneys they can throw Lucks way.

  13. broncosmack says:

areferee is saying what I think as well. Be honest, upfront about what you are doing. We are not that stupid! Trust in giving us the reason that Ortin is the choice of QB’s to get hurt on Sunday then that would sound like a valid reson to leave him in as the starter. Not because he give us the best chance to win followed up by he needs practice!!! lol How pathetic!!!

  14. stevecan2 says:

the worst part of everything. if only I could post mic ed conversations of me defending the broncos. it would be relevant as to why being called a fake fan bringing out the worst in me.

  15. carnagebronc says:

Again i ask in the sea of “everyone hates Orton” did anyone watch the game objectively? Yes Orton threw a pick six…but do that made it only 14-3 with us getting the ball back. Instead our special teams… Not Orton…allow an onside kick and the defense…not Orton gave up a td making it 21-3. ORTON then led two drives to bring us within 21-17 which is still a close game….with a lttle over 2 minutes remaining. The DEFENSE gave up a td, going into the half. Then the DEFENSE gave up a td coming out of the half. 35-17. Then on the drive we needed to get back into the game…Orton drove us up the field and FELLS fumbled. The DEFENSE AGAIN gave up a td and it is 42-17…..is that not the same game? How is all that on ORTON?

  16. carnagebronc says:

Another question…people keepntalking about the success of Tebow last year…..did he go 3-0 and I missed it?

  17. broncosmack says:

carnagebronc; so Orton is that good right? A QB is judged on wins. How is that going? I say leave him in until he gets pummeled then bring in Quinn. Get the draft rights to LUCK and trade Tebo! How does that scenario work for you? Wins this year? WE have KC twice, right? lol

  18. DenverOranges says:

Hey Bay IM gonna throw my prediction out now 24 17 Denver

  19. broncosmack says:

    DenverOranges…… What year?, lol

  20. carnagebronc says:

Still doesnt answer any of the questions i asked but your sarcasm is duly noted Broncosmack.

  21. broncosmack says:

carnagebronc, bottom line……….. Can the donkeys win with any of the QB’s in the current stable??? I will answer for you…… no…..

  22. bronco4L says:

hey it can be worse we can be the eagles at 1-3. I still remember orton saying “I’ll let my game speak for it self” hear you loud n clear. Lets not forget “im glad the fans don’t make the decisions” and “i don’t care about what the fans think”. No wonder this looses are so hard to swallow. Funny we knew this season was over before it started. yet fox refuse to play any of the other qb’s. Orton is 1-3 so far n we only played the easy part of the schedule what is next more difficult blow outs to swallow. I’m full of this b.s orton has to go. He is playing like a rookie way to many mistakes. I hope we can win another game again just to know how it feels to win again. I’m going to stop now bcuz I love my broncos I just dont like orton anymore.

  23. bronco life says:

yes they can win SOME of there games not with your savior orton though.take back those 3 picks that kyle threw, not the defense or special teams and we got a real close game.those picks are alot of points on the board for them and cant be expected to come back after a POOR performance by are super star QB.lol…………yes tebow could have done better !!defenses do not even have to plan for orton and his turtle legs can you say the same about tebow and it be true ?he has been in foxes system just as long as orton just not getting his fair chance, fair being key word .get him on the field win or loose we need to see what we have!!!!

  24. broncosmack says:

If they would only be honest with we the fans………. Tell it like it is. They stink. They are the 2nd worst team in the league (KC.) But they will not admit and work on the future and stink with N”orton”. lol Everytime I here is name I think about “Norton” from the Honeymooners and his job working in the sewer. See the connection? lol

  25. broncofan9137 says:

Can anyone tell me what the purpose was to put Tebow in the game just so he could run the ball up the middle for no gain? I said it in one of my blogs last week that if Fox put Tebow in the game it was to set him up to fail & thats exactly what he did & also try to shut the fans up. One thing to say to Fox you are the stupid one not the fans. Oh & by the way we didn’t get to see Tebow for the rest of the game even when we had no chance of winning. Even GB put their backup QB in the game!

  26. broncosfan508 says:

how come john fox n everyone here are jus talkin about the offense… am i the only one that thinks we should blame our secondary… they suk… yeah orton threw 3 picks but we made one stop all game… not defending orton cuz i want him out too but how is the head coach ignoring the fact that they put up 49 pts on us… we need a shutdown corner or maybe a few more veterans to help these rookies out

  27. broncosmack says:

broncosfan508 you are right! The defense is offensive, lol! I think our head coach is a defensive wizzzzz, correct?

  28. Ohio says:

@areferee………..well put! I couldn’t agree more with what that person said! I’m not looking for reason not to watch my Broncos but they sure are giving me reason to. If we lose to San Diego me and some other fellow Bronco fans are going to need reason to stayed tuned in to this team for the rest of this season. You want me to stay tuned in and be excited about the following weeks game or each weeks games it’s simple……play Tebow. Give me something to look forward to watching because watching Orton and our swiss cheese defense is becoming painful to watch. Wow has Moreno completely lost it or what, he has like 50 yards rushing the entire season and I don’t know if you’ve checked lately but I have and our Defense is one of the worst in the league. I thought Fox was some kind of defensive genius???? I’m not buying this young, rebuilding, new coaches, new schemes non sense, do some game planning and figure it out before I start looking forward to the 2012 draft.

  29. rayjr26 says:

well, another monday blue day. Luckily I figured this game would have about that outcome. didnt think it would be almost 50 pts on us, but hey, what do you do. I took a lot away from this game, and honestly am not that upset by the drubbing we took. First of all, GB is, and you can quote me later, “THE BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST, SIR!!”. They will be dominating people all year long, and i have no doubt that they will be in the super bowl. They are the measuring stick for greatness this year IMO. So based upon our performance, i would say we are right about where we thought we would be. We are good enough to stick around against good teams, but not elite teams! Yes our secondary looked bad, but keep in mind that they are all young guys for the most part. Sorry Dawk and Goodman you dont make it in that category. ;) We were sorely missing Champ to say the least and im sorry but Goodman played TERRIBLE.
Our D otherwise… not too bad. Our front 7 i thought played pretty well. We were able to pressure Rodgers and even get a couple of sacks. We did a good job stuffing the run until the end i thought. We forced them into several 3rd down and long.. ish.. situations, but our secondary just couldnt make a play. Again, in their defense, A.R. is one of the hottest QB’s throwing right now. Very hard to stop!
Our O… while i cant place all the blame on “the turtle”, i can say that anytime your team turns the ball over 3 times in a game, you are going to have problems… against ANY team. The fact that it was our QB that commited those 3 doesnt help his case any. Yes Fells coughed it up at the 2 on a good pass down the middle but thats only 1 out of 4 folks. Suck? Yes! End of the world? No! Unfortunately for us we made those mistakes against the best team in the league and they made us pay dearly for it. I will say that yesterday was the most exciting offensive play calling ive seen this year. We went deep (even if most of them were underthrown), and we put together a good ground game. I guess all in all, I just feel like we are getting back to the basics, and i like the direction we are heading. I love tough defense, and i think we will get there. Our whole team is getting better i think. Play makers are beginning to step up (Von, Decker, McGahee). Keep workin broncos! Oh, and can we get a different QB please! LMAO… couldnt resist. :)
    Go Broncos
THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES

  30. imready says:

The o-line is going to be top 5 next season if they keep improving as they have the first quarter of the season Coop. They will be a force to be reckoned with with those orange jerseys blazing away next year. Go Broncos!

  31. rayjr26 says:

oh ya, forgot to mention the O line! I thought they played very well yesterday. They gave “the Turtle” time, and opened holes for our backs. kudos to them also!

  32. daddybronc says:

I am really grateful that this Frustration Forum exists. I get to swap ignorance with all you other arm chair QB’s and coaches who have a semblance of football education. Isn’t it fun to get all exercised over a game without breaking a sweat?! I really do appreciate hearing the opinions especially of those who spend the time to gather new info and stats and throw them into the mix. San Diego’s gonna kill us!

I think I guessed how the game would go pretty well in my predictions before the game. I predicted a 42-3 blowout.

My surprises are that Orton was a little better than I expected in that he did throw a couple a perfect passes to Decker as red-zone plays. I was also a little surprised at how badly Orton under-threw Lloyd on several of those passes when Lloyd had outrun the defense, and was completely wide open. I was surprised that Orton could perform that horribly (INT’s) when the O-Lines seems to get him a more solid pocket week by week.

I was surprised that Denver actually had a running game against a top ranked run defense. Kudos to McGahee – and my apologies cuz I’ve bagged on him a bit. I think that I saw significant improvement of offensive control of the line of scrimmage. The pocket held against what was a real challenge. These things give me real optimism going on into the future. Go Broncos!

The defense went about like I thought and predicted. It was encouraging to see the defense able to hold early in the 1st quarter – but frankly, no defense can sustain very well against that A. Rodgers passing attack. That was artistry in the air. The Denver defense really did pretty well against the run with GB only breaking loose for a few long ones. They would have done better had they been able to get a few more breaths along the sidelines.

It looked to me like the Tebow play was designed to make Tebow look foolish to the fanbase. The O-line made no effort on that play to open a hole for Tebow. I take this as a clear statement that Fox and McCoy have chosen to sacrifice the Tebow career. I don’t know what Tebow will have to do to win over Fox. ???

Fox talked about Eeyor/ Orton needing to learn their system. Maybe the truth is that Fox is only capable of understanding and running ‘his’ own system. This really does present a huge problem for Tebow as “big Timmy” absolutely cannot succeed in the NFL without an offense the is design around his skill set. In the end is this a Tebow dilemma or a Fox Flaw?

  33. daddybronc says:

San Diego’s confidence is soaring, compared to Denver’s gut knowledge that this year is a bust. I predict that the score won’t show it but this game will be a much uglier game than the Packer game.

Champ ought to save himself for a ‘good Bronco team’ and hope that it shows up sometime in the next two years.

    SD – 38….DEN – 17

  34. daddybronc says:

River’s is targeting Rodger’s stats wanting to prove that he’s one of those elite QB’s always being touted. Broncs secondary is going to have the first half opportunity to score defensively. Heads up!

  35. broncofan9137 says:

Ohio: You & your other Bronco fans are not true fans. I don’t know if you were around in the late 60′s & early 70′s but those Bronco teams were worse than they are now & I watched every game win or lose that is a true Bronco fan. I don’t like to watch them lose but love my Bronco team no matter how much I complain. Even if they lose every game I will be watching.

  36. mark_cooper says:

Bay, shoot me the picture to mark@come2colorado.com and I’ll share the boat on the site for eveyone to see. :o )

    Also: stat of the weekend:

The Super Bowl XLV MVP passed for 408 yards, four touchdowns — not to mention his two rushing touchdowns — and an interception, good for a quarterback rating of 134.5.

    Coop
    GO BRONCOS!!

  37. MANDIEGO says:

AHHH…… This season is brutal….. The chargers are going to destroy us this weekend. I feel sorry for all the season ticket holder, refund or discount should be given! If this game is close, say within 20 points, its a win for the team. However, I think the bolts are going to make a big AFC west statement.

With the injuries we have, we might just have the worst team in the league. Hopefully, we can trade one of our QB’s to Miami for some more draft picks….

How ridiculous would it be if a coach with a 2-14 record gets fired one year, only to get hired the next and lead his new team to a worse record….. That’s some brilliant front office management.

  38. mark_cooper says:

Broncfalls, long BUT good question. The very second you sit Orton, he has little to no value. I’ll go into more detail but just looked up and have run and go coach my 12 year old team..be back on later. Thx buddy.

    Coop

  39. rocko1m says:

The main problem is the defense, the same as it has been since 2005. We’re getting better (15th) than last year, but it’s a work in progress. I love how everyone is already knocking Fox for not turning around the mess mcdaniels made in the four games he’s coached so far. Also, tebow is not the messiah. Everyone acts like putting him in is a save all and we’ll be thrust into the upper crust of the AFC with him at the helm. He has won A game in the NFL against the worst secondary ever. Fox obviously doesn’t think he can win games for the team and went with his best option. If tebow could have run the show in training camp, he’d be first in the depth chart, not third. I’d rather see quinn if orton goes down.

  40. WieminCA says:

You’re the voice of reason, Coop – too bad we only hear from you once a week … yeah – there are areas of improvement … I think one sack behind an OL that includes 2 second year men and a rookie, shows lots of promise for the future … plus, they’ve been healthy through 4 games … if we could beat the Chargers, that would put a different spin on things going forward … nevertheless, I, too, think we’re on a good track … just need some good DL, and more experience for the back 7 … trial by fire right now …

  41. worldchampions says:

You must use Tebow as a John Elway type QB where he can evade a rush and scramble out of the pocket if his protection breaks down if needed. He can throw on the run when going towards the sideline and if the receiver isn’t open he can make the option to run. Elway was great at this through his career and so was Tebow at Florida. He is also good running the option. From the shotgun gives him more time for making decisions. With McGhee back there it will drive the defenses crazy trying to figure out what is coming at them next! There are many play options that will work with him. He is very multifunctional.

  42. doggsmart says:

Orton is NOT being held to the same standards and pressure that McDaniels put on him last year. McDaniels was not a good head coach, but Orton knew Tebow was Mcdaniels “franchise quarterbaack” and to remain the starter he had to perform. Even though Fox says there was an open competiton at the beginning of camp, Orton’s regression in this “vanilla” style offense is hurting the entire team. McDaniels would jump in Orton’s face during the game when he made bad decisions, who is coaching and/or correcting him now. Our O/C is a joke!!! The broncos are trying so hard to avoid a quarterback controversy, they would rather get there so-called “best option to win quarterback” hurt in a meaningless blow out against Green Bay! Fox needs to stop being politically correct and start really coaching footbal. The bronco fan base are not stupid, we watch the final product on the field….and it is not pretty!!!

  43. wild horses says:

six interceptions, two fumbles and 6-20 record when is it enough the QBS #1 responsibility is to protect the ball 8 turnovers in 4 games is pathetic.Any other team with a first rounder on the bench would have gone to him by now. Jake Delhome ring a bell to anyone ? Fox is a stubborn old goat .

  44. monodono says:

    COOP!
Looks like You and I watched the same game on Sunday.
I’m not sure what game some of these fans are watching.
Like You said the OLine has improved except a play here and there like when Mathews got into the back field a couple of times. (Untouched I might add) Come on right side.
    One Battle at a Time….Right?

The D looked ok but Rogers and Starks really did take it to them in the second half, and Dawkins did get burned badly again by thier TE. I think every TEAM in The NFL know’s they can match up thier TE on Him and beat Him, and I’m not sure He has an answer to that but He makes it up else where.

I don’t know about You but I’m backing Kyle Orton for as long as He is our starter just like I backed Coach McDaniels as painful as it was(Until SpygateII). I like Tim Tebow but Kyle is taking way to much heat from the fans. I don’t mind the criticism so much, but the disrespectful comments are uncalled for disheartening and Embarrassing. I’ve actually stopped reading the comments of certain bloggers because they all sound like parrots to me. Braaaack Tebow…..

COOP I am optimistic The Denver Broncos are moving in the right direction but then again I too am a Homer like that. I have an optimistic nature to me that can’t be beat down by certain comments or actions.
I want The Denver Broncos to succeed no matter who is at QB. If it’s Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, or Tim Tebow starting, that is who I will support.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  45. mark_cooper says:

Thanks WieminCA, so to finish the answer. Yep, Broncfalls, the Broncos created their own mess trying to trade Otrton before the season, so therefore the controversy.

I’m so sick of it because the mainstream media rides it like a horse because they don’t have anything else to say when there really is for a young team and I mean all the way around the organization.

We’re NOT going to the Superbowl this year or even the Playoffs….AND we all knew it by the records you and I/we and everyone else posted at the beginning of the season on this blog…..O.K. well most of us. :o ) I’m as hopeful as the next guy/gal to some degree.

Orton plays better in practice and preseason so he won the job without the coaching staff getting to see him this offseason in OTA’s, that hurt him more than anyone. The rest of the team sees who performs in practice and YES Mc-D drafted him, not Coach Fox…who I like along with his O and D coordinators.

So until he plays himself out of a job or some other team comes calling with $$$$, Orton is our QB. plain and simple, no if ands or butts. Will he stay here next year? Nope. I like Tebow too, and yes we could design an offense that has the scramble play that we used with Elway and moved the QB outside the pocket from time to time but not all the time or the defense will be ready for that…wildhorse SURE, but it hasn’t proved itself sustainable in the NFL….how about plain “ole” simple Green Bay Packer beat you with the draft and talent and depth like we just saw???

    Novel idea?? :o )

4 years guys and gals. maybe sooner. So I tend to look at the positives.

Call me on the MAC & DOOG show tomorrow bewteen 3-4:30 and we can chat some more. 1510AM/93.7FM, denver time. or milehighsports.com..streaming.

Coopster!! the voice of reason…..sometimes :o ) hahahaha!!!

  46. pokoya says:

Took me about, what is it, four or five days to get over the loss, and begin to appreciate the performance of Green Bay. It is one thing to hear them called Champions, and to read praises about their Quarterback — it is something else to see them in action, against your own team that you are rooting and pulling for emotionally. This might have been a game, where years from now, people might talk about Aaron Rodgers and the 2011-2012 season, and Bronco players will be able to say, “yeah — I played against that team!”, and people will be respond, “Really?….what was that like?”….and you, with a knowing laugh, will be able to tell them! Green Bay deserves much credit, for a game which revealed, and made a statement, about how modern football is played today.
