Superbowl XLV, Draft, CBA, QB’s

February 8th, 2011 - 1:03pm by mark_cooper

Well looked like a we had a few more Packers fans than Steelers fans on the blog (smart folks) and I ate some crow after the game. My wife was a Packer Backer and yea, heard it all the way home as my two boys giggled at me. They picked the Steelers too, so Mom was right….this time. :o )

Caramelloo, agree with your post in the prior blog and you all know the drill, the Broncos management has to keep things on an even keel and keep everyones stock as high as possible to keep the highest perceived value as possible…….don’t blame them if you want to get the highest pick possible for a trade regardless of who it is.

The CBA, again, same drill..blah, blah, blah and then they get together and “I THINK” they will hammer something out. The games at the top of it’s public awareness and popularity right now and the worse thing for all parties is to have a lockout or go into a scab-season, etc. So, I like you hope it’s all lip-service. There’s plenty of dollars to go around and I agree with a number of issues on both sides.

You have to have a rookie salary cap with the run-a-way dollars the owners are paying or UNPROVEN talent…seriously. Sorry fellas but having a good college career is meaningless in the NFL and the owners shouldn’t have to pay for it. I also agree that the prior players should have better benefits since they helped make the game what it is today. It’s a violent sport and some will say then don’t play….yea right.

Guys that say that, never had a chance to play, kinda like the talking heads in the media that never played at any level. Anyway, doesn’t make sense to get into all the items until we know what the major items will end up being that can or can’t be agreed on becuae it’s really just a waste of time. Kind of like speculating on a QB’s abilities until they have played. :O)

What do you all think and CONGRATS to all you Packer pickers……you won!!

I didn’t paste the second reason as I had already talked about that (Elway wants a more balanced offense than the one Fox is accustomed to running, hence Fox not calling the O).

Oldsouthstander, and if it wasn`t for the oldtime players in those early days, the NFL wouldn`t be what it is today. We need to be thankful and be in remembrance of them. There the one`s who got it all started. They should be compensated for as far as the new health-plan of this new CBA plan. There the UNSUNG HEROS! We must involve them because they paved the way.

  3. TTDBroncFanTT15 says:

thanks caramelloo!!!! I agree with you strand…. and they were allowed to hit eachother back then. I wonder what QB’s like Elway, Marino, Young…ext think about some of the QB’s today that scream for penalties after getting hit a second after getting rid of the ball.

  4. chewy6977 says:

Completely agree with you Coop! Miss watching you play!

  5. baylinorcrush says:

John Elway was sacked 516 times, more than any quarterback in NFL history, despite escaping hundreds more with his athletic ability. That’s what makes him the greatest ever in my opinion, succeeding to the level that he did with a lesser supporting cast than most and definitely more adversity than any, the 516 sacks attest to all that, and they are the reason why he couldn’t physically go on for another year.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

Heck, Marino never got hit by anyone his release was so quick and he wouldn’t dare allow anybody to get close to him, had he been sacked half as much as Elway he would of called it quit real fast. There is no comparing Elway with Marino as far as toughness, two completely different worlds, and Young couldn’t handle it either getting knocked out of the game by concussions. Elway stands alone at the top as far as tough QB’s are concerned and that’s why he will always be my favorite player all time bar none.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry, Coop, I still loved all you guys, haha.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Actually Favre has now been sacked 525 times for the NFL record but it was in a 20 year career, not 16. But he is a tough hombre too.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Marino 292 sacks in 17 years.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Steve Young sacked 358 times in 13 years.

I love it when you guys make me research stuff, or when I make myself do so, haha.

  11. strandoftds says:

Bay, are you crunching numbers again? LMAO

  12. TTDBroncFanTT15 says:

not talking how many times… or comparing play at that matter!!!! just comparing how late “most” of them got hit compared to now… without any penalties…. i dont think Tom B. would of played 15 yrs ago lol.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, but I love to extrapolate, you’ll get used to it, LOL.

  14. strandoftds says:

Three things that John Elway was missing back in his early days while Dan Reeves was the Denver Bronco`s HC. A great O-Line, a great defense, and the given ability to throw the ball more often. All Dan Reeves did was run, run, run until the fourth qaurter. If John Elway had a O-Line like Joe Montana had along with a solid defense, and Reeves allowed john to throw more ofton, John Elway would have as many if not more superbowls than any other QB. Furthermore John would shatter all the record books for a QB hands down. And John Elway is my favorite player ever to play in the NFL bar-none. John Elway, you are my hero. Thanks for all the great memories.

  15. strandoftds says:

But I`m already used to it. It`s something I look forward to in these posts. All in fun, My friend. So it`s a good thing.

  16. strandoftds says:

TTD, I agree with you whole heartedly. The NFL rules on hitting a QB are rediculious. Man, You hear some of the oldtimers like Deacon Jones who rip the NFL for these petty calls and I agree with them. The NFL has turned this penalty ridden protection pretty-boy-band into a major laughing stock, Don`t ya think?

  17. TTDBroncFanTT15 says:

without a doubt!!!! Couldnt have said it better…. my wife gets angry when i complain about the absurd calls… even if its in the broncos favor im not a fan of that call… protect the players they say… then what are helmets and shoulder pads for!!! if they get hurt i think they can afford the co- pay!! Soon enough they will have flags on their belts hhaaahaha!!!

  18. TTDBroncFanTT15 says:

love the stats bay… some good bar trivia for the crazy pitt and eagls fans aroud me!!!!

  19. strandoftds says:

TTD, even when there`s a bad call againt the opposition of the Bronco`s and it goe`s in the Bronco`s favor, I`ll say aloud, that was a bad or horrible call. What I want from the refs is consistancy. No favoritism, thats all I ask. But there is. The refs have there favorites.

  20. sndvl says:

A number of NFL players have shown that having instant access to their thoughts is not always a good thing. Right, Nick Barnett ?
But Twitter has been given a bad rap because of these players, which is too bad because it could be used for good, too.
Just look at Auburn’s Nick Fairley who staged a chat Monday night on Twitter for Panthers fans, answering questions from the team’s biggest supporters through his page . …

He said his nickname should be Nick Flair! He would definitely fit out long list of ‘characters’!!! Lol

    Full article at NFL.com.

  21. sndvl says:

    * fit our list*

  22. strandoftds says:

Pretty clever by Failey wouldn`t you say. You got to give him credit for what he`s doing tweeting with the Carolina Panthers fans. Smart!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

But bad news for us, LOL.

  24. seweatherman1 says:

bay, what about Namoth? What were his stats on hits/sacks, etc.? With his bad knees I would think he had been clobbered as bunch in the backfield.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

If you mean Joe Namath, sack records on QB’s were not kept until 1969, so for his first 4 years your guess is as good as mine, but he got sacked only 109 times in the next 9 years.

  26. strandoftds says:

Like I`ve said the past what, month in a half 2 months, I`d like to draft Fairley. But if the Panthers do select Nick Fairley it wouldn`t hurt my feelings if we take DaQaun Bowers. If he`s that athletic and a sack master, heck pick him. I hear his Freshman and Sophmore year were shaky though. So Bowers broke out in his Junior year. Whats up with that. Makes me wonder. Just maybe he figured it all out.

  27. milehighmagic88 says:

    strand,

I heard somewhere that Bowers’ father died right before this season and that he was playing out of his mind because of it. Not sure if that’s true and even if it is true it doesn’t mean that’s why he was so good. But it makes me a little concerned if he went from average to great because of a family tragedy. You’re not going to get the kind of motivation before every season, so I have to wonder if he really is this special of a player who finally broke out or if his impressive stats were due to his heavy heart.

Again, that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with his production, but it does make me curious to see if he can actually keep it up.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Bowers was nowhere as impressive in his bowl game as Fairley was, I saw both games. Fairley was a game changer, Bowers was not, for whatever that’s worth.

  29. milehighmagic88 says:

It’s worth a whole lot in my book, LOL.

    For me it still goes:

    1) Dareus
    2) Fairley
    3) Bowers

I know I’m probably still one of the only people in the world that actually likes Dareus more than Fairley, but I’m gonna stick with it.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Dareus is someone I was really keen on two months ago, so I might go with him instead of Bowers but I would still go Fairley in case he is still available.

Klis is just trying to make us feel bad tonight:

If a new collective bargaining agreement is not reached by March 4, players would be locked out from team facilities, and all football business would effectively be shut down. New Broncos coach John Fox would not be allowed to communicate with quarterback Tim Tebow. Broncos’ football operations boss John Elway and general manager Brian Xanders would not be able to trade quarterback Kyle Orton, or work on a new contract for unrestricted free agent Champ Bailey.

And he clarifies some of the numbers in revenue sharing and how they get there whether you talk to the players or the owners:

The owners are asking players to give back a significant percentage of their revenue. According to the NFL Players Association, players received 50.6 percent of “all” revenues in 2009 and 51 percent in 2008. It’s not until the owners take a credit of approximately $1 billion off the top, for items such as stadium construction/enhancements and the NFL Network, that players receive the more widely reported “total” revenue figures of between 57 and 60 percent.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

Some funny stuff when a team gets real bad (whish we could be that funny):

From 1976-77, the Tampa Bay Bucs lost 26 games in a row. They went 0-14 in 1976 and lost their first 12 games in 1977. The Bucs’ ineptitude led coach John McKay to offer up some classic quotes:

“Well, we didn’t block real good but we made up for it by not tackling,” McKay said during the winless 1976 season.

“I’m in favor of it,” McKay said when asked about the execution of his team’s terrible offense.

“You do a lot of praying, but most of the time the answer is ‘no,’ ” McKay, describing how coaching an expansion team is like a religious experience.

  32. sndvl says:

Add drug testing to the list of issues. Goddell stated in an interview Sunday.

  33. seweatherman1 says:

Did they meet today? I think they were supposed to have another “sitdown discussion”.

  34. Yovi21 says:

Pick up Shaun Rodgers now and get Peterson through the draft!

  35. broncos20 says:

thanks for the numbers Bay; always fascinating to read about facts.

    Yovi21,
thats quite an interesting proposition. Havent heard Shaun Rodgers name in a while,,was he playing last season? How was his play? could be interesting.
    Lets return to a 4-3.
A faster DT to play along side mammoth J.Williams could be the answer. Fairly is more than capable.
some good LBs worth a look into:
    -Hawk (FA)
    -Poluzny
    -Ruud
these guy’s plays speak for themselves…

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Today marks a date of great importance for all teams:

The first day teams are allowed to put the franchise tag on players.

And February 22nd is the deadline to do so.

  37. sndvl says:

Building through FA is not the formula we need at this point in time. Rodgers is too inconsistent. Hawk will cost too much. Poluzny has been in NFL exile and not sure who Rudd is! Lol
    Draft draft and more draft!

  38. baylinorcrush says:

Make of it what you will: NFL and NFLPA not meeting again today, as they were scheduled to do. Meeting cancelled after yesterday’s session.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

However about the franchise tag this year, since the league’s collective-bargaining agreement expires March 4, there’s no telling whether or not the franchise tag will even be in play in 2011. Essentially, a team can franchise a player in February, and he could be turned into a free agent once the NFL implements its new CBA.

Since most players despise the franchise tag, that outcome could cause the franchised players to bolt for free agency out of spite!

  40. baylinorcrush says:

And also consider this: Since the NFLPA could be set to agree to the terms of an 18-game season — remember, that proposal came from the owners, and the vast majority of the players hate the concept — the owners are going to have to agree to some concessions. Since the players hate the franchise tag so much, because it keeps them from the open free-agent market, it seems like a real possibility that the franchise tag could disappear under the new CBA.

While teams have the ability to use the franchise tag over the next two weeks, it’s much more of a gamble this year than it’s ever been.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, Shaun Rodgers would be an absolute joke, he was released by the Browns for absolutely NOTHING and the Browns are awful! Plus we have experienced the Browns players in the trenches ad nauseum, that would litterally make me sick.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Barrett Ruud is a real good MLB for the Bucs.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

Shaun Rodgers “amassed” 14 tackles, three assists and 2 sacks this last year! LOL. Smart people those Browns executives for letting him go I would say.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

    One tackle a game, hahahaha.

  45. sndvl says:

    Thanks wiki-bay

As soon as I read the article about Goddell and the major issue of drug testing, I figured the talks were all just posturing. Does not surprise me one bit that they have been cancelled.
    Lockout here we come!!!!!

  46. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, the NFL’s new league year is scheduled to begin in 3 weeks and the two sides are essentially arguing over an additional $1 billion, so it’s not even close and if no one is budging I can see why today’s meeting is canceled.

I have always been one to think that a CBA won’t be worked out until late August at best. I don’t know if the folks here who are thinking it will get done soon are on drugs or just prayers but either way I don’t see that happening.

The owners are financially ready to sit this one out since the TV revenues are guaranteed, play or not, while the players will get zero, nada, zilch for pay.

Who do you think needs to move towards the other? What a joke that the players cannot see that!

I never thought players had great IQ’s in general, but this is right down embarrassing…

  47. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, I say we franchise no one this year as to not pis# off anybody. We couldn’t afford Bailey at 17 mil for the season anyway.

  48. baylinorcrush says:

Talking about players’ IQ, I will never forget the game McNabb played in that ended in a tie and he didn’t know there could be ties in the NFL, so he said what will they do in the playoffs if a game ends in a tie?…. And that was just a couple years ago after he had been in the league 10 years or so, just unbelievable, good thing those guys have physical talents…. I can see why he is driving Shanny crazy, I heard he still couldn’t get the Redskins linguo down at the end of last season.

  49. baylinorcrush says:

I guess in professional football Donovan is an educated Jamarcus, hahaha.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry for keeping myself entertained at the expense of others, LOL.
