Shake up in the House!

February 18th, 2009 - 8:50am by mark_cooper

Welcome to the NFL — if you haven’t already heard those words either on the field or in the locker room. Coach is preparing for his new line-up. You Coopster-bloggers, I can’t wait to hear what you have to say because it was a bone of contention all year on the blog.

Either you guys/gals loved him or hated him. Me… he held down the opposite side of a Pro-Bowler and one of the best in the league and was thrown at, a lot, and had some tough duties. He seemed to play better when Champ was hurt, but I won’t profess “as you know,” to know the defensive back position as well as I know other spots on the filed so I have to go with the pro’s on what they see and how they call it… you bloggers! :o )

It looks to be an interesting off-season, so stay tuned and let me know what you think because Bly was a topic all year on this blog.

If you’ve never blogged in here….. check it out, we have some great folks and interesting exchanges…. just check prior blogs and get ready to laugh a little.

WOW. I am honored to get first shot at this blog….Monodono…..
I have mixed feelings about Bly being released. He did step it up a little when Champ was out, like you noted. That said, why did he just step it up then? He allowed too many mistakes on his side last year overall and for what he was being paid. Maybe our expecatations were too high for him coming in…but hey, this is The Denver Broncos. Step it up when you walk on the field every game.
My guess is that the boys looked at where thier defensive money was being spent and decided they were not getting the best value for their buck. The best pat about this is a boost to my growing confidence in the new staff. They are making bold moves to win and I will continue to look on with excitement.
    Great Topic, Thanks Coop!

Well well well, look who decided to come out of hybernation!!! Its the Coopster… I’m still convinced you fell in a fishing hole somewhere in between these breaks.

Well its no shocker I’m not happy once again but like you said its the NFL. Things happen and yippity yap but I don’t think this was a very good move. Bly still had something left to give to this team. I’m most definitely certain that people often forget that he always got the most attention b/c everyone’s afraid of Champ (in or out of the game). He always got the most criticism because he wasn’t Champ, he didn’t do things like Champ did or would have.

I will agree though he seemed to step it up a little more when Champ was out and that is certainly no excuse. But I hate how people always compared him to Champ… there is no comparison. I’m glad is was Bly and not Champ but I still think this was stupid. It is what it is but they better get someone who can keep up with Champ b/c I can already hear the comparisons between the new guy & the vet!!

Oh and Coop, pretty sure its spelled “field”. ;)
Ahh, I love giving you a hard time.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

Great blog Coop. I’m not sure which way to go on The Bly being cut. Not sure how much was his fault and how much was to blame on the defensive play calling and how he was told to play by the d-coaches. Also do you think the reason he “stepped it up” after Champ went down was because they threw less his side and more to the other side? I think we’re gonna miss him in the end. Hope I’m wrong though. Guess we’ll see.

  4. Bronncohowie says:

Bly will be missed. I doubt we will get a better CB in free agency or the draft. Bly helped win at least 3 games for us last year. Remember his stop of Thigpen at the goal line ? It does not matter who we replace Bly with because they will get the bulk of the action opposite Champ. The team played much better last year when the young guys like Woodyard & Larsen were given a chance to play. We beat Atlanta & the Jets on the road with the young guys in there with Bly. Remember that INT Bly had against Favre ? Bly had 7 interceptions over the last two years, more than Champ. Seven might not be a lot but it led the team. Of cours, if we had any pass rush at all we would have gotten more int’s.

You’ve been gone forever! If you haven’t herd, monodono pretty much runs these blogs now. Alot of us think he needs his own blog. So… HOOK HIM UP!

    COOP!
Thought you got lost in the Bermuda Triangle or something.
My buddy Greg pulled a 28″ Rainbow out of Stage Coach res. yesterday ice fishing. Then Kissed it and let it go. Sounds just like what The Broncos did with Bly. They let Him go so some one else coud catch Him. Hopefully He won’t play in The AFC West. I personally think it was a mistake.

You know, I purposely didn’t blog here for a couple of days, I expected all the Bly haters to spew out their distaste for Him. You know who you are. I’m glad they didn’t. I wish Mr. Bly the best in His future and thank Him for His contributions both on the field and off. Unfortunately getting beat at the CB position is a big part of that position especially without D Line and Safety help. If you get beat you get beat badly and people forget the good thing you do too easily.

I’m curious who The Broncos will replace Him with. Maybe Domonique Foxworth 5-10/180 5th yr Atlanta UFA will come back or maybe The Broncos could steal Bryant McFadden 6-0/190 5th yr. Pittsburgh or Chris McAlister 6-1/206 11th yr. Baltimore with all the players they need to sign. Karl Paymah is also a UFA, I hope The Broncos can retain Him. Maybe The Broncos will shock everyone and pick Vontae Davis JR 6-0/204/- Illinois in the frist round but I have my doubts. Maybe The Broncos will choose Coye Francies SR 6-0/179/- Oregon in the second round this actually seems more feasable depending on what They do in Free Agency. So many questions, so much information! This is really getting my orange blood flowing!

broncos14441, thanks for the mention Bro! COOP it’s true I want my own Blog post, I just need a contact a direction. I think you have my email Halla if you Hear me!

I will also pass along the idea that Mr. 20 questions up there (monodono) needs his own post. The dude is just loaded with credible info and spends more time on here than you Coopster!!!! LOL!!!! ;)
I will also put in the idea that he needs a good writing partner that could just type the ears off these Broncomaniacs. Put in a good word for this Bronco lovin’ girl!?!?!

This is my first official blog but a fan since I was born, I have been reading Coop and the blog crew for the past 1yr. or more and I am finally jumping in…..and couldn’t have started at a better time!

Dre Bly…..man I think that was one of the best cuts on our D outside of Robertson. I will admit I was really worried about our ’09 season when I heard the news about shanny but my man McDaniels really impresses me and I think a lot of others and we still haven’t seen him in action. I think Bly is an above average DB in the league but definitly not worth the $$ or the hype and honestly I didn’t want him on the squad last season!! Whatever team Bly is on next year I am sure he will be getting burnt like morning toast on a regularly occuring basis. For our next CB move I think it would only be in our best intrest to get our next “shutdown” in the draft. I am not on the Broncs player personel team so I will let my man McDaniels and the others make that pick. I mean look at Dominque Rogers-Cromartie I think dude had an amazing rookie season and if you ask me looked a hell of a lot better than Bly……OKay I will stop bashing the dude he just lost his job!!

I have heard a lot of you guys talking aout free agency and I think the only man I have seen on the list would be BIG Haynesworth. Imagine having Painsworth on our D Line especially if we move into a 3-4….it may be only worth dreaming but man it would be nice to see Painsworth and DOOM playing together.

Hope you guys enjoyed my first post and I am hoping to be writing many more…..lets have a great free agency and draft and I am PUMPED for next season…just can’t wait tll training camp. Wish I still lived in CO cuz those Broncs lisensce plates are the real deal hope you guys in CO are ridin around with those.

    RAIDER HATER!!!!

What do ya think? I’ve got 3 UFA’s and I’ve got a few players splitting positions and I left the 6th and 7th rounds out I would like to see The Broncos pick up a running Back in the 6th maybe a Colorado Home grown Gartrell Johnson 6-0/225/ SR- Colorado State, and maybe a C/Long Snapper. ;-) I said Snapper… He he he.

Anyway it’s getting closer, come on guy’s rip it up. Show me what’s wrong with this one.

    I LOVE THIS…..

  11. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Oh man this was crazy to read. I mean first hearing that we let go of Dre Bly, and then reading it from Coop?!
How do we know it is you Coop and not another one of Jim’s fill in guys? I’m with everyone else saying your ship went down in the Bermuda Triangle!
Anyway about Bly, I really thought there would be a ton of bashers on here already praising all this, but its just one guy with his first ever post bashing a guy who lost his job! What’s next anyway, giving a blog to monodono and his writing assistant? Maybe their first blog can be about me losing my job since I have 1 week left in Circuit City! :(
Either way I am with you and have been all along on this one Coop, and I’m glad you pointed out all my key facts, HE STEPPED UP WHEN CHAMP WAS OUT! HE IS STILL A GREAT CORNER TOP NOCH! Really he did lost a step on the deep balls though which I was sad to see, but I can’t blame him too much there, everyone gets old, and every corner expects safety help over the top WHICH HE DID NOT HAVE!

I really dislike the cut though Coop, I really do think he has more in him, we just didn’t see it because he was opposite Champ. I convinced 07elway of all this and she jumped onboard with me, and now I’m jumping onboard with her, that bronco lovin girl, that come next season no matter who we put in there opposite Champ, that there will be just as much bashing on him as there was on Bly. I just hope the kid is through the draft and can run a 40 yard dash faster than anyone in the league, Because that will be all that saves him some neck!
I agree Bly was over paid, and especially for only getting the play we expect with that kind of money when Champ is down! But I still can not get passed why we would cut him Coop, rather than try and trade him? I mean this guy is still top noch and has years ahead of him unlike McCalister! So why not get atleast some draft picks out of him to help rebuild depth at that position without him?

Disagree with the cut, due to just the cut and cap hit we’ll take rather than trading and getting something out of a player with value still in him!

  12. CARAMELLOO says:

We all know Dre will land somehwere. He’ll probably land here in New Orleans bc the Saints need a CB. Now on to us, monodono I liked your mock defense. Esp the two Louisiana guys you had on it with Nick harris and Curtis Taylor. I think Taylor would be a nice addition bc he has the height to cover but also brings the big hit like a SS.

Harris is just a athlete and could play CB, SS, and FS. Domonique Johnson is a guy who people are sleeping on bc hes from a small school and small conference. Another thing I like about those three is their size….. 6’3, 6’2, and 6’2. The WR’s and TE’s aren’t getting any smaller these days so I think we need some height in our secondary along with guys who can cover.

  13. broncos14441 says:

    2champ4pickSIX-
What are you doing on a blog if your getting let go in a week????

  14. ShannyGone? says:

Thank the Lord Dre Bly is gone. The guy would get burnt everytime. He would think of himself as one of the best corners in the game. No doubt he is good enough to play in the NFL, but not good enough to be a Denver Bronco.

  15. br66 says:

Well I believe the broncos made a bad move here just for the simple fact that Bly gets most of the attention opposite Champ and with the qbs for the other team having a full 5 seconds to stand in the pocket and throw it is hard for any cb to stay with a receiver for that amount of time. But I do wish Dre Bly the best and thank him for what he did for the team.

  16. 07elway says:

broncos14441 – what the guy can’t come on here even though he’s losing his job? I know the guy well enough to say this… its not like he’s just being a computer-potato and doing nothing about it. Sorry, but your question just got to me and I had to say something.

2champ – I feel ya on your frustration about this. Yeah he was a bit overpaid but he still had something left in him to give to this team – I’m convinced of it and I know it.

    With faith…

  17. broncos14441 says:

    07elway and 2champ4pickSIX-
Sorry If I offended either of you. I was just jokin’ around.

  18. C$prings_rai$ed says:

Thanks for the warm welcome monodono…..I am glad to see that someone on the post has agreed with me on the Bly cut (ShannyGone?).

I agree with all of you that he stepped up his game when Champ was injured but he should have played just as good when Champ was healthy, it may have landed us a trip to the playoffs. I am a true fan of defensive players due to playing CB and FS in High School and College but I am just baffled that Denver hasn’t gotten rid of last season rookie Josh Bell…he played okay but was just getting burnt on every other play and it was gut wretching to watch that kid out there as a starter for I think the 4 or 5 games he started. I do agee with 2champ4pickSIX the next corner we get has to come from the draft and have a blazing fast 40….hopefully the fastest but only time will tell.

  19. C$prings_rai$ed says:

Oh by the way you guy watching the combine today even though its all OT guys it’s still pretty awsome…..just say some guy put up 225 39 times!!! THAT SICK!!

  20. monodono says:

CARAMELLOO, I really like reading Curtis Taylor’s bio’s he sound’s like that guy who has the potential to develop into a top shelf FS. at 6’3″ and 204 maybe He blosom’s into a good CB. That’s what I started to look for in My last TEAM players who could be versitile. That word has been passed around a lot lately and I think thats what The Coaching staff is looking for.

C$prings_rai$ed, As far as the rookies go I think Coach McDaniels will be keeping most of them around atleast another year to see if they can be developed. It’s an inexpensive way to fill your roster especially on ST’s. It’s the Million dollar players on ST’s He want’s to get rid of like Koutouvides. Man I hope I never have to spell that last name again :-)

OOOOOHHHH YYYYEEEAAAHHHHH! I’ve been whatching the combine here I’ll share my towel with ya. drool

I’ve been watching the draft and keeping up with everything too… well as much as I can. Its been really exciting to watch. I hope we can grab some great defensive guys from the draft… WE NEED IT!!!

Moss..he was another Shannys first round busts…I hope the crew is better than shany at first round picks…lol..alright my fellow broncomaniacs have a blessed off season…While i battle the whiny seahawks fans and the rain..lol

  25. Jack_Fan says:

I know everytime I blog, I inspire Monodono and 07elway to attack me.

But I just LOVE the fact that our new coaches have cut my most hated player on the team.

I find it hillarious to read people talking about how he “stepped up” while Champ was out. I will admit he made a “couple plays”. He happened to be the guy who was in the area of a batted ball and made an INT.

But the guy was routinely beat by faster players and he made no attempt to make tackles plenty of times.

Our NEW coaches will build a Patriot type defense. Therefore, over-paid and under-producing players like Bly are OUT!!!

You people can argue with me all you want. But you just see what kind of D we put out there next year. I guarantee nobody will be wishing we had Bly back!

    Love,

    Jack

-P.S. Monodono, I know in another blog somewhere you mentioned I’d get a pink slip at my job… If I didn’t have a life either, I’m sure I could of come up with many different blogs to bicker back and forth with you. But the fact is I own 2 business’ and unless the Insurance biz goes down I’ll never be out of a job.

But hey if your looking to move out of your parents basement and actually spend your time on work. Let me know. I know a few owners of some fast food restaurants and I’ll get you a job there… Hey you even get a FREE HAT!!!

jack_fan, your the classless one, some day you will get a pink slip and everyone you work with will sing! It’s one thing to say you think He should go but another to rub it in. No class.

    Good luck Mr. Bly

I stand by my comments that jack-fan’s comment’s are classeless, and these more recent comments are truely incensetive and tasteless, especially since My Father is Dead. (Cheap shot) I am a Father, and now a Grandfather and have no intention of moving into my Mothers basement.
I hope your client’s don’t find out how incensetive you really are and leave your firm and have to close during such trying economic times. I’ve just filed for Bankruptcy because of medical bill’s, I’ve broken my back twice, My neck twice, on top of other major injuries and have had to deal with more than my share of incensetive insurance companies over the years.
In reallity I just wanted to point out a Karmic flaw in some of the comments you’ve made, but that didn’t work.
In hind sight, I apologize for my comments and hope these sort of things don’t reflect to badly on all of The Broncos Nation Fans.

wow, i didnt know thaat a broncos blog could turn into a fight night! I’d like to ask that we all grow up a bit Jack_Fan. As far as bly goes, i dont really know yet if i agree or not. I feel like all year he put his strong effort in and i feel that he just got picked on because he isnt as good one on one like bailey is and our safeties (except barret) didnt even know what a football was! i think a lot of us will c this year an improved defense, but not because bly’s gone, but because out safeties will be improved as well as our linebackers and safeties!! JOSH BARRET IS THE MAN!!!!

  29. Jack_Fan says:

Assuming that whole story is TRUE… I’m sorry for your misfortune.

But that doesn’t mean I won’t disagree with anyone who says dropping Bly was a mistake.

I have a strong opinion about this defense. It needed BIG changes. I had Bly on top of my list of changes I wanted to see. It made me sick to see Bly put the sorry effort he did out there and know he was making 10 million to do it.

I pay the ticket prices to go to the games which makes me .000000001% his employer. Therefore, I have earned the right to “rub” it in!!! But that hurts your feelings I guess and you feel the need to stand up for Bly (who will never read your crap). He has his 10 million and I’m sure he’s out enjoying every dime!

My opinion differed from yours, so I’m classless? Nope, I’m just a blogger like you with a strong opinion.

    Love,

    Jack

    TURN OVER MARGIN!!!

  30. Jack_Fan says:

LBWILSON56 knows what I’m talking about! Good name too.

Al Wilson is just the type of player I’m talking about that this team needs.

We need players who leave everything they got on the field. Intense, hard working, tough, leaders.

Al Wilson was just that. Ever wonder why the Denver D has gone down the toilet since we lost him???

Maualuga is that kind of guy. But we need a nasty NT even more. I’m interested to see how they handle that next year.

  31. clarkin says:

Releasing Bly was stupid. If we were going to get rid of him, we should have at least gone for a trade. Why release such a great athlete while receiving nothing in return. I am sure Bly will have no problem finding work.

  32. monodono says:

clakin, you are correct Bly will have no trouble finding work if He want’s it He is listed in the top three of all CB UFA’s available today

  33. BroncosRockdaRockies says:

    Great Blog Coop!

As far as Bly goes? Well I used to think of him as a pretty decent back and smart! But then they showed a highlight of the locker room and Dre was like I think the Game Bal should go to our leader Bob Slowick I was like What!!~!!

But the Look on Pat Bowlens face was priceless when he said that It was kind of a cross between biting into a piece of Rhubarb pie and Teenager who was just told “No you can’t go until you clean up that room.”

And yes we do remember the big plays over the minor details alot of times, But I mean come on the “Supposedly” saved game against KC he got dragged 5 yards! Tackling was horific all around on Defense and I believe that was alot of the reasoning of letting Foxy go so why not the same for the starter who replaced him?

But at the same time one could make an arguement in the same fashion well if we had pressure on the QB Bly very well could’ve shined ! And I don’t disagree with that at all. But unfortunately one scenario happened before the other and so the result is a release. Had we had a strong D line that got pressure and Bly had 7 Int’s would he have been released?

I don’t think so, but you have to be able to produce for the money otherwise an owner is going to look at it like paying a dollar for a stick of juicy fruit when I can pay 1.25 for 3 packs 15count packs of the same type of gum.

Anyways like stopping in here and reading everyones stuff always good!!!!

    Go Broncos!

  34. Jack_Fan says:

Monodono… Dre Bly is #3 of the free agent CB’s?

    Says you?

    ESPN says he’s #13!

He wouldn’t be in the top three cb’s with a last name starting with B.

I guarantee he doesn’t start more than 50% of the games he plays and has 2 INT’s or less next year!!!

I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong too. But I’ll be right.

I can’t wait to rub that in.

Wow, I’m dealing with some geniuses here…

If you were an ESPN insider and could see the rankings it would show you that Bly is 13th.

Foxy is ranked 8th by the way…

Ok seriously, you really need to start acting like a grown-up you old fart… yeah I’m talking to you Jack_Fan. I can’t imagine how you even manage to have people working for you when you act like a 2 year old brat. And like you’re any bit of a genius yourself… you can’t even act your age. You want to talk down to people for making a simple mistake and talk to them like they know nothing when you’re the one that needs some serious mental therapy… then that’s exactly what you’re going to get in return. And eventually all this childish talk you’re trying to pull off will come back and smack you on the broad side of your face. You’re a pitiful excuse for an adult… that is if you even know what that is. Grow up man… you’re sad, REALLY sad.

The more you call people names to bring them down to your level the more you prove how classless you are and it reflects on every Broncos Fan.
    Welcome powerbronco!

I am a first time blogger and i have read a ton of these blogs over the past couple of weeks and i have to say they are pretty interesting. You guys keep it interesting. Sounds like a Cutler vs Rivers moments. Lots of opinions but very competitive. I would personally keep a keep a lookout for Worrell Williams at LB. He possibly is a “sleeper” and if he plays anything like his brother, he would be good to develop into the system.

  41. texark-fan says:

good find monodono, i would rather have Dunta Robinson or McAlister over Bly. only couse Bly could not tackle. when we got Bly we knew he was one that would gamble on the big play, at the time it was ok but with no safteys over the top to cover him, he got burned. i didnot like him as much as you (and 07elway) nor did i dislike him as much as jack-fan.
being fairly new to this form I am begining to think if one of you were to say white the other would say black.
JACK-FAN the proper word is ignorant (sp) not stupid. it means some one that is not well informed, lack of information ect. ect.

  42. jay2303 says:

I honestly believe that Bly was a quick fix to try and start the healing process of losing D-will (R.I.P.) If they would have been patient a little while longer and found someone in FA, the draft, or plugged in Fox at CB2 then it would have been a better situation for all. Bly was a gambler. We knew that from the begining.

    Great call jay2303!

Bly was a quick fix for losing Darrent Williams, and it didn’t pay off. I don’t really understand how Bly made a pro-bowl before joining the Broncos. 5 interceptions in 2 seasons isn’t pro-bowl play, it barely qualifies for a prospect in college ball.

Personally I think that Bly thought he didn’t have to try any more after being picked up by the broncos. Every single game this season he was at least 2 yards further back in coverage than the rest of the D-backs. My guess is that he did it so that he didn’t have to run as hard or he knew that he couldn’t keep up with the receiver and was looking for some kind of advantage. His tackling was sub-standard and he was almost always out of position to make a play.

Most of you are correct though, Bly will get picked up fairly quickly. There are always desperate teams out there, like the Broncos were 2 years ago, that will pick him up.

Let’s find someone better in the draft!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

what we thought Bly could of been for us, he clearly wasn’t, he looked good on a bad Lions team and we got him and we saw what happened next. Whether he was lined up against the #1 or #2 WR, we always saw Bly trailing behind time after time. I think Bell, Paymah, and J.Williams played better, and when they didn’t, at least their experience was their reasoning for poor play. Bly did no better than Lenny Walls or Kelly Herndon. Bly= the ultimate Bust!

Forgot about Foxworth, never should of traded him

OOOOO… I inspire the best in you people.

07Elway, aren’t we getting a little fired up? I mean wow, look at all you wrote. I should be smacked? HAHA!!! Well because I can’t wait to see what else you’ll say, I’ll respond.

-I’m probly much further from being an old fart than you. My college football days were over just 4 years ago.

-I never claimed to be a genius. But I DO know the freakin ALPHABET!!! Is it ignorance if you don’t know that texark fan? Or lack of common sense?

Monodono, did you really have to go find another website somewhere to try to make a point? I think ESPN might know a little more about the subject. Just my opinion.

-I think you need to realize your a freakin blogger, nothing more. Your opinions mean nothing to the Bronco’s organization AT ALL. I doubt Xanders is looking up your posts to see what he should do with Bowlens money.

Point is, Bly is gone and I love it! I’m sure someone will pick him up, but he will be a bust there as well. I guarantee it.

    Love,

    Jack
