Well…a lot like you guys, I had to digest that one a little bit and ponder on it for a day or so before this blog. I remember a few of those days (GAMES) going all the way back to high school. So I re-lived a few of those in my mind to try to explain it in a way that makes some sense.
You may have days like that and believe it or not they aren’t uncommon. Have you ever showed up at work and said to yourself, “I should have stayed in bed?”… or have you had days where you said to yourself, “Wow, today’s not my day!” … or just had a day and felt you weren’t at your best …
… The answer is, “Yes.”
Well believe it or not, it can happen to a team and you saw it in living color. No matter how hard you try, things just don’t turn around, go your way, or get going at all. It happens; I’ve been there and no matter who yells about it, who comments on it … nothing changes. Ater it’s over you don’t really have an explanation for it and you’re kind of in a fog.
I had to laugh – even Mike Shanahan said he didn’t blame the fans for leaving. He’s right. You all pay good money for entertainment and if it’s not happening, you either turn the channel on the TV set or you leave the game. I can’t blame you and won’t.
So, we have a bye week and a lot of work to do. We lost Nalen (HUGE) at the center spot. I have the utmost respect for Tom but injuries are part of the game. He knows it, you know it and the team knows it. Same with Nate Jackson.
We’ve actually talked about some of this coming into the season, in our other blogs and Chris Myers is ready and so is Tony Scheffler, and it’s time to step in and step up. Will we get the same level of play? Only time will tell. The center has some help from both guards and schemes can change to accomodate both positions as needed, so be patient with the young guys.
As a player you put that type of GAME behind you and move forward learning from it and getting ready for the Steelers. What’s done is done, you try not to repeat it as the season moves so quickly you don’t really have time to dwell on it; you have to focus on the task at hand and it’s the Steelers, pure and simple.
We all know what has to be done and we have two weeks to work on it, so let’s just put that one behind us and look forward and learn.
What do you say, folks???

as disappointing as the game was, im all for standing behind the team. even when you are losing that badly, ther are still moments when you can see the potential of this team and its really exciting to watch
besides, who else would i watch on sunday?
I dunno Coop, they looked pretty lost out there.
Whenever the Broncos have a great season we start off badly, with the exception of the 1998 season.
I am a Broncos fan win or lose. I live in El Paso and have tickets to the K.C. game in December. Am I going to sell my tickets because my Broncos are in a slump?, no! Matter of fact, I went out and bought a couple of team T-shirts last night to show my support.
Go Broncos!
Frank
Mark, I hear all the talk about “lets pull up our socks and get busy” kind of thing, but as a forever die hard bronco fan, I can’t help looking at the facts. Denver’s performance in the pre-season i.e. no defense, no offense in the red zone have rolled over into regular season play. Denver has major problems, major deficits which in my opinion cannot be fixed or band-aided over in this season.
I agree with you Coop!
We’ve been spoiled as Bronco fans, but this is the time our team needs us. Really, as fans, there’s only so much we can do. But, if showing my unwaivering support to the team in their moment of need does anything to help, than I’m prepared to do that.
GO BRONCOS. GO BRONCOS…………..GO BRONCOS!!!
Like all Bronco fans, I am there win or lose. Sunday’s game was embarrasing and I know there is plenty of season left to turn it around since the division is still up for grabs. However, our defense is getting worse every week and I would like to see some improvement.
I am glad to see Scheffler back in the lineup and with him in there every week, he will certainly help Cutler as he came up big with Jay last year. Also, on another good note, Walker should be good to go after the bye week.
GO BRONCOS!!
Well, I have been a fan since 1980 or around there. I can honestly say I have lost faith in the coaches and the GM. We all know we have always had a great run game, but watching them get rid of every veteran RB and not draft any RBs is as foolish as it can get. We now have a few undrafted young RBs and a soon-to-be suspended RB. I see the team being dismantled, not built. If you look at our drafts over the span that Shanahan has been here, none have gotten a great player that sticks around as a veteran Bronco. We either get free agents that can’t be professional and leave, or we draft poorly, in general. Champ is amazing, but that’s it. How can we have all our LBs and defensive line be very average or rookies?? Where is the vision in this team? It’s been set up very poorly over the past few years. I’m already looking forward to a great #1 draft pick for the team next year, hopefully it will be in the top 5 or 10 and hopefully they don’t screw it up. Also, why does Shanahan have such a hard time getting a good defensive coordinator? Our defense is awful and has been pretty bad for a few years now. I think Ray Rhodes could have been good, but he left after a year. Maybe Shanahan has lost the fire and excitement and needs a new team to go to. There’s really no other good options for a head coach, but this is ugly what’s going on this year. Sorry, but let’s not say Go Broncos if they don’t seem to have that same attitude. They don’t seem to care.
One thing about bronca fans, we do get frustrated when the team plays bad, especially over an extended period of time. I don’t think it’s a lack of talent on defense, but the system. Last year as I recall, the defense was mighty through most of a game. The could hold apponents out of the end zone and definately stopped the run in most games. Their biggest problem was the prevent defense. The Broncos need to lose this scheme as it has not worked yet over a span of 9 games, so not likely to work by seasons end. The defense is working so hard now to stop the run with 8 in the box, Brian Greise could probably have a successful passing game. Dump the scheme and go back to last years scheme.
HELP!!!
I’m not buying it. The broncos have lost 8 of there last 12 games. I don’t think nobody’s listening to Shanny no more.
Look at some of the play calling in red-zone. QB sneak on every 4th down? what is Travis Henry there for?
The special teams Coach is either no good or he has no talent to work with.
The Def. Cord. skeams or horrific. To much thinking and no action and talent is being used. Please get DJ Williams out of the middle. He is getting moved around like furniture.
The only time they look motivated is when they play Choakland. Maybe cause Mike Shanny takes that game personal. BE RID OF HIM and that CRUMMY DEF.CORD.!!!!!!!!!
I’m not so frusterated with the losses, just the fact that the players seem to give up after they’re down–I wish they’d continue to play their hardest whether winning or not.
I’ve been watching the Broncos for decades. Sorry guys. This is the most inept team ever, and as pointed out a carry-over from the end of last year. The players lack fire. Shanny’s not adjusting and lacks performance accountability due to his ridiculous long-term contract. He’s too comfortable in his 15,000 sq. ft. house. The play calling is predictable. Inexperience is creating mediocre results. Top players are hurt. Get ready for a dreadful result at the end. I hope and pray they can get good draft choices next year. They need more at every position; more weight, more strength, more speed, and most importantly more will to win. Despite this dismal scenario, we’ll still enjoy watching even if they don’t win, but it would be more enjoyable if they did.
Its not Shanahan! I hear people say we should dump Shanahan. That is just crazy talk his overall record still stacks up against some of the best all time coaches! Lets not get rash. I think we need some help with our assistant coaches especially this deffensive guy. Not only has he hurt our running game which wasnt all that great last year, but he killed our passing deffensive. That is not a problem we have had in years. Before this terrible horrible cordinator ruins everything the Broncos stand far we need to dump him!!!!!!!!!
I live in Miami and I still fly my bronos flag on my van and on my balcony after all Dolphin fans can not say a word to me,look at there record. One request from a die hard Bronco fan in Miami. ( Cutler PEEEEEEASE NO MORE INT’S ) I can’t take it anymore. GO BRONCOS
ima die hard bronco fan but it just seems like them forgot who were playn this season for R.I.P D-Will ,Nash
It has been said before and will be said again, no Superbowl has been won in the first weeks of the season. If you have ever participated in any team sports, you know that it takes time to develop trust and confidence in each other. Football requires 11 individuals to play as a team, if one players tries to do more than his responsibility problems arise. Team defense in football requires discipline, and mental strength to make sure your responsibilities are first and foremost. They will get it together make all Bronco fans happy again. Anybody can sit on the outside and point unknowing fingers at coaches and players. Ask anyone who has coached and played. Go Broncos
Ima brocos fan 4 life and i no that Shanahan will get this thing turned around look at the bright side the division is still up for grabs and Shanahan knows wat it takes to Win and he’ll get the job done. Also the players dotn look like there playin wit heart. they need to remeber who there playing for. R.I.P Dee , Nash
Big response this week. I decided to change the way I respond a little, so you’ll have to tell me if you like it better. This is my rookie season
) at blogging, so let’s get started.
thundersrevenge, you cracked me up…spoken like a true fan. Who else would we watch??
superchop, no arguments here, like I said, when you’ve played the game you just have a few days like that. It’s still early if you look at the division record.
geandily, lets hope that’s the case this year, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.
foreigndog, Frank, you’re my man. Long drive from El Paso to see your team and it never ceases to amaze me at the number of fans that drive in from all over the country like you do to see the game. Thank you, as a former player.
totalgym2003, only time will tell, the division is wide open right now, so it could be a crap shoot to the last game for the division. No one team is dominating.
al_wilson_fan, thanks, let’s stick together and see what happens. It’s a long season and we get some help with Javon coming back.
broncosfanscott, good call and the defense definitely has it’s work cut out for it and remember Green Bay and Pittsburgh aren’t in our division.
jmatty520, times have changed and today players go to the highest bidder so you might want a jersey with interchangeable numbers
) and we’ve had success at the RB postion because we have a good zone blocking scheme, so no worries there, believe me once that gets on track. New schemes and new players take some time and the injuries to date aren’t helping. But the attitude and the seem to care comments aren’t in the park.
You have to understand, as a player you are filmed at every practice and every game from a number of different angles. They care and they have a winners attitude or they wouldn’t last among their teammates or the coaching staff would cut them….you’ve seen it happen on other teams.
suzukilc, we have to pressure the QB or it doesn’t matter who we have at the DB spot, I could throw on them….well maybe not me…but any QB in this League.
)
messenger, pateince grasshopper.
new tune, Choakland……I like it. Can I use that term in the future? Easy, it’s early…look at the standings….no run-aways yet.
Anonymous, I can tell you that the palyers are, even though it might not look like it at times. Football’s an instinct sport, there’s no time to think, the games toooo fast and right now I believe that’s what’s going on, a lot of thinking versus reacting and playing the position.
rigpa44, don’t give up the ship yet, the next 5-6 games will tell if your right.
maceano, Mike will make changes as he has in the past if he doesn’t think things will come together, it’s a business as well as a sport and I still like the players we picked up this off-season.
tonytdrummer, GO CANES!!…sorry I got carried away as a former Miami boy who grew up there and went to high school at Killian and graduated from the U. I was a Doplphin fan as a boy growing up with the 72 Team and still talk to Earl Morrell and Manny Fernandez from time to time, great guys.
green27, you called it, the division is up for grabs, plain and simple.
47rocksurworld, you’ve played the game to make a comment like that. Who, where did you play?? Tell me and the others as you hit the nail on the head. Great comment.
COOP
Win lose or draw, it’s great being a Broncos fan. After this weekend, our fortunes will turn. The Broncos are going to be back in business. It sucks to be the Steelers right now.
In college i was asked by a fellow Physical Education Major to try out for the team, as i never got the chance to play in high school due to the school i went to canceled our football program. I felt that I did not have the time to make up for what experience i lacked coming in to college. A chance that i regret to this day. I had played Basketball and participated in track. I wanted to coach so i concentrated on coaching and physical education, different things came up so I was not able to finish. Next came kids so i was able to help coach with their teams, and learn what it takes to be a better father, coach and person. My son plays high school football, and so between my love of the game and his transformation as a player and young man, i have gained more insight. I have watched him and others play disciplined football at their positions, while others try to be more than they are or try to do everything by themselves. While my son might not be the most talented player on the team he is the most disciplined and stays home to do his job on the field. I have been blessed with my son and two daughters and their team sports. It is a glimpse of real life in moments at a time, so times all thing go well, sometimes they don’t. You might have to work with someone who you don’t like but still be a member of the team, for the best for your team. Can hardly wait to see a game in person, we plan to go to the vikings game, so we can see it in person, and enjoy the experience and hope to meet some of the Broncos while we are there. Thanks and keep up the good work. Thomas
Wow, I didn’t expect a response. Thanks Coop! And, what you said helps us fans feel better. If they really are doing what you said then I can rest easier.
as much as i agree with everything you said ive personally felt the season is lost but dont get me wrong ill still support the broncos game in and game out no matter our record, thats just what marks the presense of a true team and fans with heart.
its when people quit and fans give up when things turn bad
Coop, as usual fantastic blog!
In response to those who say dump Shannahan… WHO are you going to bring in? Marty Shottenheimer? This is one of the best coaches in the league. I’ve heard coaches say after a loss, I really hate playing against this coach. The sets, the formations… They are always different, and I can’t necessarily go to tape..
I was talking to a NY Giants writer who said WE DREAM OF A COACH LIKE YOURS.. I am happy to say he is ours, and we’ll work with him.
Now that I’ve expressed my love for the coach. Let me also question him. 5 defensive coordinators have come through Denver. This year the Defense seems to call an awful lot of time outs.. It shows me that they are lost. He’s got to bring someone in, and stick with them. He has to find that one person that compliments him well.
Nalen Out For The Season
This decision to bring back Alexander has me bummed. I would like to know how incompetent a center can be to start in the NFL (Broncos)? Is Alexander just a space filler…and expendable? When the Broncos start somebody who is not competent enough even to be on any teams practice squad, it must be an open door to the QB for the defense. Is minimal game experience of a well-established reject (Alexander) more important than promoting someone from the practice squad? What motivation is there for someone on the practice squad when such a decision is made? Would this decision to bring back Alexander be made if the Broncos out of contention this year?
One solution for the Broncos! LEARN HOW TO DRAFT OFFENSIVE WEAPONS! Please give Cutler some good receivers to throw to. All we have is Walker!
i
I think our situation can only improve. Just give our guys some more time to get used to each other’s playing styles (which should be granted by Bye week). There’s stil a HUGE amount of talent on our team, despite what many “fair-weather-fans” are bemoaning. Just look at the Bills game, yes we should have won by a larger margin, but the fact that we got that kick set up and executed perfectly in SIX SECONDS shows me a huge deal of talent, along with how well we tied up the Colts during their game in the first half.
Anonymess. Ever hear of B marshall? Just one of the bright young spots which offer a future more promising than most of the teams out there. If it can’t be this year, I’ll be as unhappy as any die-hard but I can still remember watching
Elway before the last two years… thinking how hard it is to be successful in this league and savoring every moment. Then we won. Now we’re spoiled, right?
Shanny needs to find coordinators that are good enough to trust but not good enough to get snatched up by the next floundering team in need of a head coach…
Nobody’s perfect but I’ll take our coach above every coach out there! …Gawd I hope I’m right
Oh yeah, and when we don’t lose our Rod Smiths, Javon Walkers , Tom Nalens & especially Al Wilsons… I expect our coaches will look a LOT better.
Go Broncos!!
jmatty520 your an idiot. We have not had great drafts but we have retained some really good players since shanahan ie: Ian gold, Ben Hamilton, Foxworth, Lepsis,DJ Williams, AND not here anymore but should be Darrent Williams and Al Wilson. And it has been proven that just about any back is going to rush for a 1,000 yards anyway. Some new draft picks such as Chris Myers and Erik Pears are going to be great lineman for our future. Shanahan is not the prob, he has done everything he could this year through free agency and the past three drafts to put a great unit both on offense and defense, these guys just havnt gelled as fast as Mike thought they would, thats all. Now is not the time for panic and chopping heads, we are one game out of the division and still play the chiefs twice, we already have beaten the raiders and we will mos def be fired up to play the bolts in S.D. We still are gonna go as far as Cutler takes us.
Coop your the man! Always looking at the game like the pro you are, The Broncos are FAR from dead and what doesnt kills us only makes us……right Coop?
I meant to say, Nalen out for the season is now my biggest worry. He is the catalyst for that line. He also calls the schemes. He is the QB in the trenches. THat is a huge hit to the already anemic line…. Hey Coop, how’s the legs feeling?? *Laughing* at this point we need some depth at O-line!!
And, great offensive weapons??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Brandon Marshall, Javon Walker, Stokley in the slot, Selvin Young looks fantastic out of the backfield as a receiver as well as a potential replacement for a potential depature at running back. Not to mention Tony Sheffler who is a good tight end, was set back by the foot injury and is starting to come on. Plus, believe it or not… I see good things from Martinez. He is willing to catch it in the middle and come down with the ball, taking the hit.. He is super green right now. But, I think we’ve got a great kid with great hands there as well. So don’t say the offense is missing weapons…… The Defense… I’m still worried about DJ Williams. Keeps getting caught into the wrong gap. He is getting better. But, still a worry.
Shannon (The lady that knows her sports)
BradJamesBroncoFan, if we start reacting instead of thinking things are going to come together, I believe that.
47rocksurworld, Great insight. I have two boys playing sports right now too, a lot like your kids and it’s a blast watching them develop at their own speeds. Whether any of our kids go any further, the discipline they learn from team sports will carry into their real life careers and be a huge positive for them.
I was asked in a meeting one time after showing “THE DRIVE” film for a builder clients sales team that I work with and explaining how it parallels the real world, what was the most important thing I learned playing football……..the answer was……DISCIPLINE.
P.S. Go early to the game and get down as close to the field as you can while the team warms up and I think you will be amazed at the speed and the size of the players.
jmatty520, it’s a different game today. Free agency changed everything. Some people love it, some hate it, you know the drill, two sides to every story. Guys move around so keep the interchangable jersey ready.
) There’s only 1696 players in the country on active rosters.
cougarwilson, I won’t get you wrong, I see things from a little different perspective and will share some insight that I have, that’s all. We’re all fans, right!
TisShannon, coaches take all the blame regardless so they’re easy targets, but if you look around the league you might count on one hand others coaches you might want here. You know the drill on D-coordinators; if they do a great job they get snapped up as the next head coach somewhere else. I can’t blame them. Would any of us turn down a head job……nah!
Oh yea, your comment on how’s the leg’s. HA! I’d pull a hammy just trying to run on the field. It a game for the young guys, promise. Except for Testaverde, I CAN’T BELIEVE HE’S STILL PLAYING??? He’s my hero at his age, 44?
We have some weapons in Sheffler, Marshall, Young, Walker, etc, and yes you DO know your sports!!
)
buckinbroncofan, on Alexander, he’s a 5th year player that knows the system and experience counts for much more than you might think especially if he has to move around and possibly play other spots on the line since Meyers in now at center.
Funny Story, I’m in Tampa and were playing Houston and we dressed only 6 lineman. Typically we dressed 7 and one got sick over night. We’re getting killed and are in the 2 minute offense in the end of the third quarter and the defensive lineman know we’re throwing it so they are in their sprinter stances and coming off the ball like jets. I’m at right guard and our left guard (Tom McHale) gets dinged (concussion) pretty good. Our 6th lineman really only plays center and our center’s never really played anything else (Randy Grimes).
So we’re carry our left guard around after each play, talking to him and I stuck a bunch of smelling salts in my socks and after every few plays I would crack one open and stick it under his nose to keep him with us through the end of the game because our ceneter didn’t want to play guard and we really didn’t want the backup in. Today, that would be frowned on……different times.
Anonymous,…………………no comment, look at the roster.
Hyracotherium, we have the talent and the bye week will help.
Whidbeybroncos, injuries are tough, that’s why you need a DEEP roster not just a superstar roster. Injuries in the NFL make a great team a run of the mill team pretty quick. You’ve all have seen it happen for years around the NFL, every year.
mykejo, you’re on it, we agree we have talent and I like what we did in the off season with trades and acquisitions and retention……injuries hurt. We’ll get BETTER (filled that gap for ya, didn’t I)
)
for some reason, I thought alexander was to be the center….I think that is what the bronco press release said. makes much more sense to move myers there….at a skill position.
thanks for the heads up.
BBF
I think its really interesting reading what fans have to say about the team and players. There are so many perspectives and gripes about why and how the team should change.
The thing I really like about this blog Coop, is that you take all of these perspectives and mesh them into an all incompassing commentary that can be made into a game plan. (All though I doubt Shannahan reads anything we have to say here)
The answer to this team isn’t going to come out of one or two rash moves by Pat Bowlen, it has to be a team effort. As the old saying goes ” your only as strong as your weakest link”. Champ bailey can’t stop everyone from scoring, John Lynch isn’t going to plug every hole in the secondary, and Cutler isn’t going to be running back kick-offs to get us a better field advantage.
Regardless of if you like the defensive scheme right now (which I don’t) or if you think that the Broncos can win with the offense alone, it takes all “teams” doing their job to get it done.
So to you bloggers out there that love to blame one person or another, ease up on our boys. They know that their all in it TOGETHER, so we should too.
mykejo, I love how you call me an idiot when you don’t even know how to spell. That would be “you’re” and idiot, not “your” an idiot. haha Nice!

buckinbroncofan, that’s what we’re all here for, to share info, no sweat.
thundersrevenge, yep, it’s a team effort and the injuries haven’t helped and the defense needs to get on track…hopefully we can pull it together. It’s interesting to see all the thoughts and help keep them in perspective. I try to add a little inside the locker room “thought process” that folks may not think about or ever have any exposure to, in their FAN careers.
)
jmatty520, come on folks, easy does it, we’re all on the same TEAM.
1ARABIANKNIGHT, I don’t get that kind of face time with the team.
