Right call on 4th and 1!

September 26th, 2011 - 8:31am by mark_cooper

I’d do it again EVERY TIME…why because as an offensive line you can get enough push to get it in the end zone. Now who to blame…no ONE. The offensive line will take the blame because they will MAN-UP and say we didn’t get it done. The Titans defense got better push than our offensive line did and they will tell you that. It happens and we can get better at it and will. It’s grind time in the trenches and we will win that one. I run every time on 4th and inches…still.

Our defense played great against the run but the veteran Hasselbeck knew where to put the ball all day. Take a look at the stats…oddly identical in most categories except the passing game. Even with Britt out you have to give credit where credit is due. Their receivers stepped up and got the job done and we had a tough time defending. With Champ and Doom out, it takes a shut down corner and our best pass rusher out of the game. That equals more time to deliver the ball. AND Hasselbeck did.

Did any of you see the Colts-Steelers game last night? Freeney and Mathis almost single handedly kept Pittsburgh in check with their pass rush. It reminded me how bad we miss Doom. A big time pass rush makes a veteran QB look helpless.

Again, call me a homer but I saw enough good stuff to see progress. When we execute and play our game we look pretty dang good…but when we have a breakdown at one spot or another we have a tough time recovering. Still in the game at the end and a tipped pass was the difference…again…lots of good things to build on.

I like the progress and it will really show (one way or the other) as we step into the next two games of the schedule with defending SB Champs Green Bay Packers, then San Diego.

After that, Miami’s struggling at 0-3, Detroit’s 3-0, Oakland beat the Jets this past weekend and KC’s 0-3. I was sitting in on the MAC & DOOG radio show last week and we had a lot of fun talking about the upcoming schedule, so listen in every Tuesday at 4:05 as we recap the blog and the game with the fellas.

P.S. Held my Charity flyfishing event over the weekend and we raised $71K gross, still waiting on the final number for Cystic Fibrosis with 36 anglers and a beautiful weekend float fishing two awesome rivers.

What’s on your mind after the game?
GO BRONCOS, Coopster

Maybe they should have just one blog where we talk Orton, and any other blog, if you mention QB, Orton or anything related you can’t post.

  2. stevecan2 says:

    WieminCa,

Good bye, to you too sir. I bid you farewell and hope that someday I catch the bug for mediocrity that you have and we can talk about the Denver Broncos again.

  3. DenverOranges says:

I dont know that time of the month I guess

  4. DenverOranges says:

We should give the colts a call collins is injured maybe they would want Orton

  5. killerkod says:

that might increase their chances of getting Luck too……….LOL

  6. stevecan2 says:

I guess I instantly fail at giving an honest impression on KO’s performance, yesterday. He did not lose us the game. He also sure as heck did absolutely nothing to win it either.

  7. seweatherman1 says:

Sounds like the truth hurts. oh well……..

  8. seweatherman1 says:

Guys I got to catch some z’s. Have to be back at this tonight at midnight. later.

  9. oldsouthstander says:

    Bay,
Before you and everybody else goes gaga over to missing by 1 point two games in a row, you need top recall that last year I totaled zip points. Luck of the draw. Tried the lottery and got zip!! Oh well.
    Coop,
You’re 100% right. The right call was made, but the wrong play was tried. An Orton bootleg would have caught everybody with their jaws on the turf. Or and fake intro the line and going outside. The Titans totally stacked the middle. Orton should have seen it and audibled into a different play.
Correction to a Dallas Cowboy post in game blog. Staubach didn’t get to play because Morton got injured. Landry was actually alternating Staubach and Morton ever PLAY!!! Staubach confronted Landry and told him he needed to pick one or the other because this wasn’t working. Landry picked Staubach and the rest is history.

  10. brian_schneider says:

On that 4th & goal attempt, the defense knew what the playcall was going to be even before Orton did..or so it seemed. Its times like that when an unexpected playcall is the best choice. Even a playaction would’ve gotten the TE open they were 100% committed to stoping the run and nothing else.

  11. rayjr26 says:

ah to see the beauty of a boot leg off of play action… kinda reminds me of the good old days! LMAO

  12. baylinorcrush says:

oldsouth just trying to give you kudos is all. I know you’re low key but it’s ok to get a little excited, haha. And last year you did get 3 points, a fourth and a fifth place.

  13. brian_schneider says:

We’re basically allowing the defense to not “play honest.” The blueprint for beating us is simple, stuff the run and Orton will do the rest.

Although, Fox is going to continue to run the ball even when we get stuffed because that’s his system. Where are all those Moreno guys who said he was supposed to have it made in the shade in Fox’s system…

  14. stevecan2 says:

Not just the run, but a run up the gut. I thought a fake FB run toss left would have been perfect. No push from the line, over committed D and McGahee strong enough to blast through a rogue DB.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah and he came in in great shape, LMAO!

  16. stevecan2 says:

I am still in the Moreno camp, but a divorce may be coming very very soon.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

I’m cool with that, never married Moreno in the first place.

  18. stevecan2 says:

Although, I don’t believe I personally thought that Fox would excel his game. Moreno in my eyes is not a power back, in my eyes only maybe, but still.

  19. brian_schneider says:

I don’t think Moreno is durable enough to even pose a threat as a power back.

  21. stevecan2 says:

I started the year by looking for some impressive individual performances from Moreno. It’s his third year, you either make it or you don’t. I am actually very patient before I write people off, but a QB at 6+ years and a back with 2+ years. I start or have already lost my patience with that kind of time to prove yourself.

  22. HardHitting27 says:

@O&BinCostaRica Was that Fox quote from today?

  23. brian_schneider says:

O&BinCostaRica: I think they left off the end part…Fox: “There’s a lot of people in our building that understand QB play, & right now Kyle (Orton), in our opinion, gives us the best chance at drafting Andrew Luck.”

  24. rayjr26 says:

    @ brian_schneider…. LMAO

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

WieminCa,calls everybody whiners and wishes to meet people off the blog, like he scares anybody, haha….he’s the whiner!!!

I know I was outta line the other night,I was drunk again, but I don’t take to threats lightly!!!

  26. O&BinCostaRica says:

Yup posted on Twitter. From today’s Press Conference they’ve yet to post the video on the site. AND apparently got questions about not playing TT in goal line.

Now, the reason he does not play TT in goal line situations is that it would be that he admits KO is NOT the best QB in the game. Think about it, it is like saying hey, KO can’t get in the end zone which means he cannot score points, which means he can’t win games.

Everyone OUTSIDE the building KNOWS this.

  27. stevecan2 says:

Lol at the Fox comment. Yes, they do, minus the XF… Being a great QB and being able to pick the right one to lead your team are different. Learning curve, for the E though. Arena league and watching from the luxury boxes after your great career don’t instantly give you VP credentials. Being John Elway in Denver though, helps you sell a ton of cars, and gives us something to be excited about, but thus far, Kyle Orton is your guy? I hold my tongue, give him some time and we’ll see.

JE liked Tebow, Fox came to town, doesn’t like Tebow. Sorry, guys I really am, but watching 7 on 7′s and the word from Jake Delhome’s most ardent supporter sways you opinion that much?

  28. stevecan2 says:

And before I get bam blasted with hate speech. I am talking about the off the field John Elway.

  29. DenverOranges says:

    Suck for luck in 2012!!!!!!!!

One more year with the jack Daniels chugging, beard growing tool that is our starting quarter back

  30. brian_schneider says:

Hate the player not the Jack Daniels LOL!

  31. O&BinCostaRica says:

  32. O&BinCostaRica says:

Wait! I’ve changed my mind. At 1 – 3 after getting pummeled in GB, they will announce a change to sell out the San Diego game. That, or there will be a TON of Charger jerseys at Sports Authority field @ Mile High.

  33. brian_schneider says:

I seriously believe that Orton will start the entire season barring injury or any type of emergency.

Here’s what I want to know, if Orton give us the best chance why did we try and trade him, if he gives us the best chance why don’t we sign him to a long term deal, if he gives us the best chance why don’t we get rid of Tebow, if he gives us the best chance than we shouldn’t even consider Luck in the draft, and finally if he gives us the best chance how come we’re not winning?

  34. baylinorcrush says:

The money is on the Jets game at home, the escalator money, LOL.

  35. rayjr26 says:

My guess would be 2-5.. or 1-6. either way, you have demonstrated that you are not going to the playoffs (first part of sched was the easy part remember?), which means our coach can now start kind of planning for next year which of course means checking out our other QBs to see where we stand before next years draft! thats my conspiracy theory. Coach just had to let Orton lose a while so that then it will appear that he had no choice but to play TT for the experiece factor!

  36. baylinorcrush says:

But honestly, I’m with Brian, Fox has no desire to start Tebow at any time this season, if Orton goes down Quinn comes in, I believe everyone is just wasting there time hoping for Tebow to start unfortunately.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

    their time

  38. brian_schneider says:

As “people” we get lied to by our governemnt.
As “fans” we get lied to by our coaching staff.
Why do they feel the need to lie to us? I’d much rather accept the truth coming out of their mouth even if it is unfavorable than accepting an unfavorable lie.

  39. HardHitting27 says:

If you believe Elway, he stated a few weeks back that if this team is below .500 at the bye week, a change in QB will be made……

  40. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Moreno is not a power back never has been, never will be … and def won’t roll over people …especially after losing weight … but that doesn’t mean he is not a good back. And McGahee ran well at Cincy but not in Raiders and avg in TN … Fact remains … lack of running … isn’t Moreno’s fault. Comes down to the oline … I wonder if people will start saying McGahee can’t get tough yards too … after all … 4th and short and still came up short. Whether it is McGahee or Moreno or whoever that runs for this team … they won’t get nothing if the line doesn’t run block well … I long for the days of zone blocking. TRB

  41. brian_schneider says:

Again they leave off the end of the it..” a chance in QB will be made, Quinn will start.”

  42. rayjr26 says:

@ hardhitting27… where did you see than? i dont recall reading anything about that?

  43. bronco4L says:

the whole offense should gang up on orton n tell him to pick up the slack or ask to be traded. I know we are not making it to the superbowl but this were all games we could have won but came up short with costly mistakes. Show everyone you deserve those big bucks orton or you will find urself picking up a nother career.

  44. 1nOnlyTRB says:

And honestly, Fox has been a power blocker … I believe the only reason we are power blocking … u guessed it … McCoy … and his power O style. McCoy worked with Fox but never as an OC … but at other positions. His first OC job was under McD where he must have adopted the power O. Our lack of runnign now is due to Fox letting McCoy fully run the show. Magazu is also a zone line teacher … not a power block teacher … hence part of our problem (which was why no matter how hard Dennison tried we couldn’t run in 2009 because he was still around but he was forced to teach power instead of zone) … TRB

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I wonder if colts are desperate enough for Orton or Quinn? Lmao … Pipe dream I know … TRB

  46. brian_schneider says:

For argument sake lets say we turn it around and Orton starts playing better and have somewhat of a “decent” season, meaning we’d have to sell the farm to get Luck. You think..well he’s gone in FA (that’s what I initally thought). Now I think if he does well we’ll offer him a contract but he would accept it under one condition..we get rid of Tebow. Now I actually can’t trust anything I’m hearing from EFX but if they’re serious about Orton being our best chance well then I guess we all know what we can expect.

  47. henryac says:

The one thing I noticed when Fox left Carolina was the deafening silence from the fans about not re-signing him. Made me wonder then what they knew that Denver didn’t. I guess we are finding out now! Denver is in the middle of the NFL version of a perfect storm, average (maybe) QB, average unimaginative HC, OC with a leash on him, no money and pretty much a thorough break-down of adult supervision. At times like this, I remember what my grandma told me as a youngster, “Cheer up, Son. I’ve seen it go like this for months, and all of a sudden, it will get worse!”

  48. DenverOranges says:

A bit late TRB check my post at 1:24

  49. brian_schneider says:

The Colts aren’t desperate at all.

  50. HardHitting27 says:

Elways comment(s) about the QB situation was made on 102.3 The Ticket a few weeks back.

As I stated, if you believe him. The comment was made in regards to the QB situation with having 2 starters and Tebow on the squad and what they would do in the event the team doesn’t come out strong.

He basically stated that they would evaluate the situation at QB if the team was below .500 at the bye week and look at a possible change to evaluate what we’ve got for the future. All in all he was not very forthcoming with information and the way he phrased the answer he sounded like he didn’t want to say anything at all.
