Quinn trade and acquisitions

March 24th, 2010 - 9:01pm by mark_cooper

Love all the talk around town about the “NEW GUYS.”

I like what I see and those of you that follow this blog know that nothing happens until training camp when the pads get strapped on and they get going…even after the draft, there much to talk, cry, moan about but nothing concrete. I know I sound like a broken record BUT I honestly don’t get to excited or to sad about much…BUT I will tell you a story.

There was once a QB that won the Heisman Trophy in college, stood 6’5″ tall 225 LB’s and was every bit a stud and even looked a little like Tebow…..got ya thinking huh?

Well I knew him as a freshman at the U and was impressed the first game I saw him play. (lost his redshirt)

I later played with him on a team that had what I’d call average coaching and average coaches (record proved it). This big strong QB was called to save the game almost every week and he once threw about 72 passes for close to 400 yards in a defeat…crazy…I was there. (another story behind that night) in the Thunderdome…they called it.

If he had coaching, mentoring, anything, there early in his career he may have had a chance to hold all the records in the league…..any guess’s yet?

So, what’s Coop trying to say?

I’m giving Quinn the benefit of the doubt until he gets here and gets some coaching and some training because this system fits him like a glove. I like his talent, age, size and attitude.

…..so what do you think AND who was the QB I was talking about? Be back Tuesday to check in.

Go Broncos!

    Great P.O.V Cooper…

Im guessing its Gino Torretta!?! But that is just a guess…

  2. florio's_mom says:

    That’s Cake COOP:

    Vinny Testaverde.

  3. florio's_mom says:

Here is a neat article on the winningest coach in college history:

    http://footballnjunk.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/a-closer-look-at-john-gagliardi/

  4. marshisboss says:

I am agreeing with florio I think is is Testaverde

  5. rayjr26 says:

    bledsoe?

  6. SuperiorBroncoFan says:

Anybody know when they release the preseason schedule? I heard a rumor that the broncos are coming up to play Minnesota! It would be sweet if this was true!

  7. rayjr26 says:

ok… i know bledsoe was way off!! lol

  8. florio's_mom says:

Testaverde was huge and from Miami and won the heisman and played when Coop played.

    It’s elementary Watson.

    LOL

  9. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yup definitely Testeverde…The only other person from the U that won a Heisman was Gino Torretta but based on coops age and the fact that Gino Toretta wasn’t 6’5…like florio says, cake, Vinny Testaverde lol

I also believe Quinn can blossom here.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah Testeverde, and Coop,I agree on Quinn, with the right coaching I think he can be better than most people think he can, definitely great potential.

  11. roya1fantasy says:

Quinn was THE man in college. He went to the Browns and had to look up to a Derek Anderson as a mentor…thats not good, the coaches were not good, the receivers were not good they had one of the worst O lines and so far his whole career has been on a thin line w/ anderson. I don’t know what he is capable of and neither does anyone else. to be honest if he was still with the Browns I would be cynical of him. But he is with the Broncos now and I have nothing but Hope and Faith…..Plus he can’t do much worse than simms did…right…?

  12. TheRoyalBeast says:

Same can be said for Orton, I think this past year was his best numbers ever…maybe not in the win column but in stats….its just an efficient system. With a guy that can run it and has done so very well in college (quinn) I beleive he can kick butt here…altho i still think many things are dependant on if Marshall stays….

  13. topscribe says:

I agree that Quinn can be a better QB than he ever was in the adverse situation in Cleveland. The same, however can be said of Orton who has not had the chance to show what he can do in NORMAL circumstances, i.e., free of injury, free of mediocre (at best) coaching, free of a radically different, unfamiliar offensive scheme.

We may have a QB battle shaping up here in 2011 (not this year – it’s going to take Quinn a year, just as it did Orton), and I believe it’s going to be between two potentially stellar QBs. It’s going to be interesting . . .

  14. BroncosRmyReligion says:

    Thanks Coop.

Love it when the nfl network plays reruns of the 1998 Broncos. 4th RB to hit 2000, love watching T.Davis run.

    G :) B R :) N C :) S

  15. broncofanlvnm says:

Yeah, I like watching that show too. Now it’s time for the Broncos to give us some more great memories like that one!!!!

  16. BroncWild says:

If Quinn isnt starting halfway through this coming season. He’ll most definitely be the starting qb next year.

  17. 4broncosjeff says:

Kyle will be this years starter, with all the vetts we have its win now. Brady will back him up this year. Dont forget about Tom, next year (2011) will be a three way battle.

  18. TheRoyalBeast says:

I dont trust anything McDaniel says…theres always a twist…sure Orton will start all the games…take the first hand of too moreno, and then Quinn will play the rest of the rest of the game….keep doing this every game for all 16 games and technically, Orton was the starter….sounds like some dirty stuff McD would do lmao…

Either QB is fine with me, cuz if we dont have the beast, they will both struggle…..Ask cutler lmao

  19. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Amen to that TRB.

  20. BroncWild says:

Your right TRB…I know im going off the subject but why dont we go after Antonio Pierce? He’ll be a good replacement for Andra Davis since we got rid of him. Then draft McClain and we would have soild deft at linebacker.

  21. Orange_Crusher says:

Well, I don’t have much of an opinon on QB’s….lol

I’ll give BQ my vote of confidence…
I’ll give Orton my respect for competing like a man…

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS!!!!!

  22. imready says:

It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you work with a bunch of turkeys. Brady Quinn started out in this league with a bunch of turkeys in Cleveland. I think he does well in Denver, unless the Cleveland experience damaged him mentally beyond repair. He has a great work ethic and is a natural leader becuase of that part of his personality. Nothing against Orton, he had decent stats but choked too many times when he had to make a play to win the game. Jake Plummer syndrome. You just ain’t gonna get to the promised land if you can’t make a play in the clutch.
As far as the season goes, let’s see who’s still on the team when training camp opens. One thing is for sure, all of us year round fans are keeping our eyes and ears open with some of our best play makers on the bubble. Hope they are all here when it comes time to strap the pads on. Go Broncos!

  23. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Broncwild

I would prefer Kirk Morrison over Pierce, especially since Martidale coached him his whole career…but like many say…no way that happens…we havent even tried i bet lol

it is what it is…but we have depth, Larsen, woodyard, Jarvis, Ayers, Hagan, DJ, Doom.

Since ayers is starting, i think he should rotate with Jarvis to give him more experience

  24. BeastFromEast92 says:

OC Orton does deserve respect for coming in here and having the best statistical year he’s ever had,now if he could throw the deep ball better and be a little more agile,he would be a helluva QB…IMO

As far as Quinn nobody knows how he’ll be,but I garuntee you he is tickled pink to get a chance in Denver, behind our Oline, not worried about his blindside, and having the great WR’s we have, that don’t drop the ball.LOL

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB I agree Ayers and Moss rotating at OLB,and Haggan and Larson rotating the Jack.I would also be ok with McClain in the mix, can’t never have too many good LB’s.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Morrison would be great,but I wouldn’t hold my breath.LOL

  27. champbigd says:

quinn needs to teach orton how to be fast and how to get stronger lol if we combined them we would have a pretty good QB

  28. 19bk90 says:

Quinn will be our Drew Brees, the Browns will be sad, if history is right then Broncos pretty much screw the Browns out of anything postitive

  29. 19bk90 says:

and if i remember right, Drew Brees wasn’t that amazing with the chargers…

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Brees was very good with the Chargers, it’s just that his severe injury, which many thought could signal the end of his career, prompted the Chargers to draft Ely Manning then switched with the Giants for Rivers. Without that injury Brees would still be the Charger QB. That’s the way I remember it.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

In an attempt to keep it fair and balanced, here is what Woody says today about some of the reasons why the Broncos might part way with Marshall:

What if the Broncos keep him and: (A) He refuses another $10 million-a-year offer from the Broncos and decides to sit out camp or even a full season unless he is traded or paid more than any other receiver in the league; (B) He returns to the team and announces after three games he has an “injury” and can’t play for several games; (C) He is involved in another domestic dispute, nightclub incident or serious traffic offense — and is suspended for a half season, or even a full one, by the NFL commissioner; (D) He has ongoing issues with Josh McDaniels and assistant coaches and players and decides to dog it for the season and causes more problems in the locker room; (E) He gets in another “mystery” situation, slips on a McDonald’s bag and is severely injured again; or (F) He continually tells everyone around him he will never be happy until he is out of this town?

Marshall would have to be perfect not to repeat any of the above past mistakes he has already made, and perfect off the field for Marshall is the furthest thing from reality, hence the HUGE gamble to keeping him here, not to mention the most important factor of them all, he wants out of this town. It’s impossible for me to understand the rational that him being great, a beast, on the field outweighs the cons on this deal. From a business point of view, it’s a no brainer and that’s why no one is willing to ante up a single first round pick or the money Marshall think he is worth, because all things taken in account every businessman in this league has definitely decided that he is not worthy of that kind of consideration. Glad to see that once in a while integrity is still an important aspect requirement in this league, no one will throw the kitchen sink at a time bomb. This is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less, just reading the paper this morning and commenting on it, don’t mean to control the blog or make anyone mad, LOL, send your anger Woody’s way for the ones who need to vent off, I was vented at plenty the other day to suffice for the rest of the week…. Just kidding, if anyone wants to let me have it, go for it if it makes you feel better.

Good morning everyone and glad to see Cooper back, I like the way at this time a year he doesn’t get excited much about all the personnel changes, from experience he knows they don’t need much until, like he says, training camp when they put the pads on. It’s nice to have the insight of a player who has actually been there, it puts a little perspective back into our priorities list, at least mine.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

    …he knows they don’t MEAN much…

  33. brian_schneider says:

I think Marshall would accept option “A”. $10 million-a-year is enough to even shut Marshall up.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Point made by Woody is Marshall turned down 9.5 mil last year. Everything Woody refers to above Marshall has done in the past was the point off his article.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

…point of his article. Typing too fast.

  36. brian_schneider says:

    We’ll only time will tell.

Is ESPN also going to air the draft or is it only going to be broadcasted on NFL Network?

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Last year it was only NFLN, I imagine it will be the same, I don’t see how two cable networks would share this bonanza.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

This is a funny tidbit by Woody that made me laugh about the obsene money reqirements of players today:

The NFL is ever-evolving. Stan Jones, a longtime coach for the Denver Broncos, used to tell me about playing both offense and defense for the Chicago Bears, before he was selected to the Hall of Fame.
Once he asked owner/coach George Halas for something like a $500 raise, and Halas told him to leave the room for a minute. When Jones returned and asked about his raise, Halas replied: “You’re talking to the wrong guy. I’ve traded you to the Redskins.”

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

Brees was a UFA that year, as Rivers was the touted rookie on bench. I believe the injury sustained by Brees came towards the end of the season on a blitz by Broncos safety John Lynch.

  40. broncofanlvnm says:

I think a lot of people who are real big Marshall fans are just willing to overlook all the things he has done in the past and don’t really care whether Marshall wants to be in Denver or not. They just want to have his great talent in a Broncos uniform and to hell with everything else. This is selfish in a way when you think about it. Happy people in general are more productive that people that are unhappy with any given situation, ie, Brandon Marshall. Just imagine what he could have done for the Broncos if he were happy. It is obvious that even a fair salary of 9.5 million a year is not even enough to make him happy in Denver. He just has too many bad memories in Denver, given his role the Darrent Williams situation. I can;t blame him for wanting to leave. I’ve said this before, he would be hard to replace, but not impossible. Just my two worthless cents for anyone that cares.

  41. royalbroncofan1 says:

Read Woody’s article the morning.. covered all of Marshall’s antics. Didn’t miss anything.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Actually Warren was the culprit on Brees injury:

During the final game of the 2005 season against the Denver Broncos Drew Brees injured his shoulder while trying to recover a fumble when Broncos tackle Gerard Warren hit Brees while he was on the ground. Brees underwent arthroscopic surgery on January 5, 2006 to repair the torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

  43. broncofanlvnm says:

Yeah, I remember that hit. You could literally see his shoulder pop out of place and then back in!

  44. BeastFromEast92 says:

Like Marshall or not,he is one of the NFL’s top WRs.If he wants to stay I myself would be ecstatic, but if he dosen’t want to stay trade him,but make damn sure you get value out of him, just because he has some issues don’t mean he’s worthless,if he plays somewhere else next year and has over 100 receptions and over 1000 yards,we don’t wanna look back and say, wait a minute we should have gotten more outta him, that would be stupid.I’m just saying if he’s traded we need to get a good trade,a lot of great players have been traded because of issues, but not given away.If he leaves we will need a replacement, because I don’t think Gaffney or Royal either one are #1 WRs.Just one man’s opinion.GO BRONCOS 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way Happy Birthday BEAST…….

  45. brian_schneider says:

Even if McD and Xanders were that stupid to let Marshall go for less than he’s worth, I would think Bowlen would step in and lay down the law. Bowlen said he wouldn’t try to stop McD if it was something that would benefit the team. That leads me to think he’d stop McD if he was going to do something way crazy.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

Happy birthday, Beast! I’ll have a cold one for you.

  47. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah Cold Beer on a Friday Night.LMAO

  48. baylinorcrush says:

Unless you mean Brandon’s birthday, but his was Tuesday the 23rd.

  49. Bones1965 says:

B Marsh is gone lets face it but if they get a 2nd round pick in return I will be upset. Quinn has a lot of upside. Tell me who the man had in Cleveland to work with.

I laugh at these people in Mock Drafts talking about us picking Dez Bryant. Why would McD get rid B Marsh and get another problem in Bryant. Look for the center from Florida Pouncey, Guard from Idaho or McClain LB from Alabama.
