One in a Row!!

September 14th, 2007 - 9:05am by mark_cooper

It’s a long season and “One in a Row” is a start. We used to say (in the locker room) that you have to take one game at a time because you can’t look past anyone in this league no matter what the other team’s record is on any Sunday.

It wasn’t a pretty win but at the end of the year the score won’t really matter, just the record to get into the playoffs.

Folks, the Kevin Everett injury took my breath away and I’ve said prayers for him ever since. It sounds like he’s making progress, God bless him and his family.

The training staffs on each team reacted quickly and are to be commended, believe me, the “Greek”, (Steve Antonopulos) took care of me on more than one occasion and they’re the best.

I needed a surgery while in Tampa and played until the end of the season with it and came back to Denver to have Dr. McElhinney and Dr. Greenberg (the Broncos doctors at the time) do the surgery because I had so much confidence in them.

It’s RAIDER WEEK so let’s pump up the volume a little and get ready for an ole AFC rival. RAIDER WEEK brings back some memories of games in the Coliseum against Howie Long, Lyle Alzado, Ted Hendricks and the crew.

Now you got me laughing about some of the characters like Matt Millen screaming at us for cutting him and Lester Hayes stuttering at us and trying to pin our receivers at the line or scrimmage. We’d run a G lead, meaning guard pulling around the end on the corner (Lester) to knock his block off. Yep, that was fun stuff!!!

Gotta be fun remembering some of those epic battles….

Oh, and by the way….What’s up with Wade Boggs stealling your fishing trophy?!? LOL….

One 200 ppoint catch should beat 2 catches that equal 200 points any day!!!

Here’s the scoop. The reporter that reported that story didn’t do a very good job. I’m not sure if he left the room thinking he had a scoop or what. I’ve known Bogg’s since my days with the Buccaneers, 1987. 20 years.

We fish together and against each other all the time in celebrity tournaments. So we have a competitive camaraderie and have alot of fun busting on each other and kidding each other whether we fish good or bad. (you know the drill)

So we’re at the SLAM celebrity fish tournament for Cystic Fibrosis in Key West last weekend and he’s helping Gary Ellis the founder (dear friend of both of us)hand out trophy’s etc, up on the stage. So we get to the celebrity division and the scorers, scored Bogg’s catching 2 bonefish on bait which are 100 pts each so he has 200 pts. I catch a tarpon on fly which is technically more difficult so it scores 200pts, therefore we tie. Well under a tie the last fish caught first wins. I caught my tarpon before he caught his (assumed) bonefish, so I win.

Well the scorers didn’t know Bogg’s caught two species versus the 2-of one species and two species trumps one species. So REALLY he won. I didn’t know either way as I hadn’t been paying attention to the standings and was actually shocked I won with one tarpon even though the conditions were a little tough during the two days.

So I run up out of the crowd laughing that I won and Bogg’s gives me the evil eye and runs the other way over to the door like he’s taking my trophy. So I’m calling him back over (finger pointing) and saying he’s a crybaby baseball player and everything will be all right (laughing and messing with him) and the crowd is now in stitches. So Bogg’s comes back over and we take a picture with me and him and my trophy and I kiss him on the cheek and hug him and it’s all funny, really funny.

So Gary Ellis (the promoter) says, “Hey Coop you need to present Bogg’s with his runner-up trophy”, so I run over to the other trophy’s on the counter and grab the smallest one I can find and tell Bogg’s to come over and get his second place (losers trophy) LOUDLY and we take more pictures and ham it up on stage with another kiss and the crowd is in hysterics now.

The banquet ends and we all head to the hotel bar and laugh through the rest of the evening all together overlooking Key West harbor. Well on my flight home Gary Ellis calls me and says Bogg’s caught 2 species (which he did) and I start laughing and said, well at least we put on a good show for everyone and that was it.

So the next day the inaccurate story hits and I guess the story got picked up on other Blogs and then on Mike & Mike in the morning on ESPN and folks went after Bogg’s without knowing what really happened and what a great time we all had goofing around at a charity tournament for the crowd where the main objective is to have fun and raise money to find a cure for a terrible disease. The Redbone Series of Tournaments have raised MILLIONS of dollars for research over the years and you can see all the information at http://www.redbone.org.

Bogg’s will be at another tournament next week helping CF raise money and I host and emcee (5th year) the Rocky Mountain Flyfishing Classic tournament next week in Aspen. We’ll raise about $65-$75k for CF. So you can see where our hearts are.

You can read all about my tournament at http://www.come2colorado.com under fishing tournament.

So, like Paul Harvey says, “NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY”

    From the horse’s mouth.

    Sports Guru,

Great site and thanks. I’ll keep you posted on our event in the future. It’s kind of interesting how an inaccurate story gained so much momentum. I e-mailed Golic at the Mike & Mike show (played against him) explaining the error, but never personally heard from him.

Has it been quiet for a RAIDER week or what? As players, we use to feed off the fans excitement and the stadium use to rock. I hope things pick-up at gametime. IT’S RAIDER WEEK BABY!!!!
