Offseason Productive

March 10th, 2008 - 3:11pm by mark_cooper

Boss Bailey has the speed we can use at the linebacker position. Niko Koutouvides should fit in the middle just fine and get D.J. Williams back where he can let it all hang out.

Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel give us plenty to look at and a future in the secondary when John Lynch hangs it up. I’d like to see Domonique Foxworth stay, but it’s all business.

Keary Colbert might find a nice change of scenery here and a system he might flourish in with Mike’s offense and Jay Cutler’s arm.

There’s more to come but to date I like everything I see and you know how it goes. We’ll all know more once we see them in camp and preseason.

What are you all thinking so far?? Let’s touch base every week or two and see how it all works out through the offseason. Camp will be here before we know it.

I think we should draft O-tackle, D-tackle and best available/developmental/speacial teams after that… unless we can trade down to about #20 in the first round, then reverse the first two picks. That’s what I think!

    Coop!

All I can say is SAN DIEGO your days are numbered!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

Our defense is getting into full form and they know it….By taking care of the defense, we’ve now given ourselves every reason to aide and add to the offense..Yeah, just what the AFC needs another reason for Cutler to take you to school. Give the boy the protection, find a solid #2 WR and find the end zone…..

HELL YEAH IT’S GREAT TO BE A BRONCO!!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!!!
    ALL READY!

  3. Cutler2Marshall says:

the only reason i want keary colbert on the field is if he can start and end up bein a deep threat!. otherwise steal bryant johnson from the bills

  4. imready says:

I’m with you Coop, sure beats the hell of of last years pick- ups in free agency! Hope it looks as good in Sept. as it does now. I’m looking forward to seeing the Bailey brothers knock the snot out of Javon Walker! Go Broncos!

  5. WGBronco says:

    Coop,

  6. WGBronco says:

    Coop,
I love the moves, laying low and let the big money ride and then swooping in for the excellent talent of the low money guys that wanna play and play hard. I cant wait for the draft. Lets get a GREAT OL tackle and a punter and a kicker that boots throiugh the end zone on kick offs. Elam for the field goals. Last year field position killed us on kick offs and punts. WE NEED TO FIX THAT.

GO BRONCOS AND J. ELAM TO HAVE A 20 year career with the Boys in Blue and Orange!!!

  7. superchop7 says:

    I like Niko and McCree.

Colbert has been having trouble with his hands lately. (but he was great his rookie year)

    Big concern for Boss’s health.

Pissed as hell that we didn’t go after Ayanbadejo. (absolutely stupid IMO)

Smells like OT in the first round, give us some input on who “you” like please. (Not a bad way to go in this draft for sure)

  8. peterg says:

    Hey Coop,
What do you think about Denver trying to aquire Chris Brown? He’s young and talented and has a history in the rocky mountains. And he certainly carries less baggage than Travis Henry. He also has the explosiveness to break the big one any play.
I must admit this class has turned out pretty good with the exception of aquiring a MLB that is anything but impressive. But who knows. He may end up being another Eddie Mac. It would be great if we could round out this free agent class with one legitimate #2 WR, draft one decent WR out of Oklahoma, and find another DL or FB in free agency or later rounds of the draft.

  9. chico2403 says:

Go get b johnson from Arizona n we will be the team to beat

  10. chico2403 says:

With boss outside niko od dj in the middle or jaime and dj outside we are stop the run this year!!!! and safeties and cbs we good!!

  11. DENVERBRONCOS GOT JAYCUTLER says:

THE BRONCOS R DOING GREAT SO FAR BUT WE LOST A GOOD CORNER FOXWORTH. BUT 2 TELL U THE TRUTH WE SHOULD GET LIT SHEPPARD OR PACKMAN JONES FOR A DEEP THREAT PASSING ATTACK. THE BRONCOS NEED REALLY GOOD WR BUT WE HAV THE BEST TE BETTER THAN PEOPLE WHO ARE JOINING THE LEAGUE OR BEEN HERE FOR 2 OR 3 YEARS ALREADY. WE HAV THE 3RD BEST 2ND YEAR RUNNER BACK. OUR TEAM CAN DO DAMAGE WE SHOULD GO 4-1 OR 5-0 IN OUR FIRST 5 GAMES OF THE REGULAR SEASON. WE GONNA DOMINATE THE AFC WEST INCLUDING OAKLAND 4 GETTING JOVAN WALKER YA DIG ??/

  12. HukedOnFonicks says:

I think that we should trade up and get McFadden. I know it might sound stupid but i think that it could be a very good pick. I know that we have Travis and Selvin but i want a guy in the back field that i have actually heard of before. I think that we need to trade up for McFadden and then spend the rest of our picks on some big Offensive Linemen. The zone blocking scheme isn’t working out anymore… We need big guys up front to protect Cutler and our running backs. Any feedback?

  13. 24zone says:

I agree, hopefully these are solid acquisitions. In terms of linebackers, I thought DJ had his best year at Mike.

Offensively, when you have your qb, and solid players at WR and TE, then help him out with linemen. Worth the investment to protect your qb.

  14. killacal says:

I think we have done a pretty good job as well but i agree with 24zone i think dj had a great year at mlb and i think he should stay did we really lose foxworth, because i hope not if so i’d take a chance on pacman making it rain, on defense and marshall making it snow on offense

  15. bestinthewest24 says:

Whats the news on Jason Elam. I don’t care that he’s lost his distance, he can still win games for us better than any in the game right now. I think the Broncos will regret not resigning Elam, especially if he goes to the Chiefs.

  16. sayre111589 says:

The Broncos are queitly having one of the best offseasons in the league. We have signed at minimum 3 new starters who needed a change of scenery to succeed. This might sound homerish, but we could honestly put our backups in at starting LB, and have a formidable squad (Winborn, Webster, Beck, Kershaw). Depth has never been better at DB, and Shannahan knows not to get rid of Foxworth. He loves it in Denver, and he will be paid next year guaranteed.

What once looked like a weakness now looks like a major strength. A couple of fat boys to compliment Marcus Thomas’ athleticism and we will be set there.

The offense is studly (11th in the NFL) and young. Cutler may need one more big time target opposite Brandon Marshall (should have made pro bowl). I have learned to love Limas Sweed, who was actually productive in college and can do something other than catch the deep ball cough Ashley Lelie cough.

Broncos need to draft OL, WR, DT, FB, and K and with 8 picks they are set.

We should draft Sweed in rd. 1, DT Pat Sims(Auburn) or Marcus Harrison (Arkansas) in rd. 2, in rd. 4 pick up Owen Schmitt(FB, West Virginia) and Brandon Coutou (Kicker Georgia). Round 5, Kirk Barton, T Ohio State and with the other round 5, Orlando Scandrick, CB Boise State. In round 7, take two Iowa products in RB Albert Young, and DE Bryan Mattison, who is pretty much John Engelberger.

    Peace im out

  17. WGBronco says:

No we didn’t loose Fxy yet. He got a tender trestricted free agent contract to see if other teams are willing to pay higher. I have not heard of any other team chasing foxy down for more money. Same with Abdullah. I think they will be back for less money because other teams aren’t signing them. Smart move on Shanny’s part to stay under the cap with salary. Plus it gives the guys the chance to shop around to see if they get something better, if no one pays them higher then Shanny was right in reducing there salary for the bennefit of the team.

Foxy, Elam, Abdullah will stay Orange and Blue Boys!!!

GO BRONCOS IN WINNING THE WEST

  18. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

In our best seasons traditionally we’ve been quite assassins, moving through the bushes and jumping on our opponents in prolific swiftness and efficiency. I feel that 2008′s Broncos will arise out of nowhere (at least in the eyes of the myopic media) and ascend to the top of the NFL. Let’s just do what we’re doing currently, quietly make brilliant acquisitions and we’ll see how things go from there.

  19. Russ'o says:

The Broncos are looking to trade to get Roy Williams from the Lions. If we get him, Marshall would be the second string and Colber would be fourth string. We should try to go for Julius Peppers from the Panthers.

  20. ChampBaileyforMVP says:

We definitely need another quality WR to help Cutler and the offence, it should also take the pressure off Marshall. We must bring in a new RB as well as we will get banged up. Most importantly defence wins championships so I agree Peppers would be a great move, along with a big name in the draft like Ellis, Dorsey etc.

  21. htekid says:

C’MON Peppers? of course who wouldn’t want him, but the panthers aren’t giving him up and he wouldn’t fit under the cap. Smarten up.

  22. imready says:

Foxworth and Abdullah, that’s an interesting topic. I really like both players. I think Fox has hurt himself with some of his complaining about playing safety. That seems like one of Shanny’s pet peeves and players who forget that it’s a privilage to play in the NFL aren’t with the Broncos for very long. That being said, I hope he stays and gets happy just to be here as a member of the Broncos. I hope he gets his money too, his versitility makes him worth it , he can step in at a moments notice and he’s smart.
Abdullah showed flashes of brilliance last season but also really blew some assignments. The Broncos need to push him, he has the atheletic ability, he just needs to get smarter. I would give him an incentive laden contract that would push him to be all he can be.
From what the Broncos have done so far in the off season I think they are filling some holes which will allow them to go for an impact player in the draft. If the rumor is true that they are pursueing Roy Williams, that would give them their #2 wideout ( Brandon Marshall will be #1 for a long time and end up in the ring of fame. He will be one of the top receivers in the NFL this season. I hope Rod Smith is around to coach him) and I still say they will take the best available RB with the 12th pick. If it was me, i would try and trade Selvin Young to the Lions for Roy Williams. Henry would be #2 and Hall #3 at RB. I love Selvin Young but
Hall can return kicks too and he was just about as effective as Young .

  23. emaldo says:

Exactly, were dreamin here….granted any team would love to have a dispruptive, game changing DE like Julius Peppers, but the bottom line is a guy like Peppers is gonna want to much to play in the orange and blue. We need a big LT, trade up for J. Long….that guys the truth.

  24. oldsouthstander says:

I’ve got an “easy” asignment for all you Jason Elams naysayers. Name me one other player who, in the last 25 years, has won over half of a teams wins in any given season.
Now do you understand how valuable an asset he is?

  25. columbusOHbronco says:

I hope buffalo takes b. johnson from AZ and over pays him. that will allow us to take the WR from OK. That will also allow us to take a lineman in the second round. This draft is heavy with WR and lineman the two positions we need most and as long as shanny address both needs in first 2 rounds we will be fine. I hope the LB we picked up will work out but its a coin flip at best. Next year we need to get james laurinaitis from ohio st. to sure up the middle. go broncos and go bucks!!!!!!!!

  26. Monz says:

weren’t we all hyped up around this time last year?? its still san diegos division, we didnt even score a TD against them last year. we clearly still have a lot of work to do. the players we signed do have some upside, but there is still work to be done at DL, OL, WR, RB, and special teams. im not sure how long champ, dj, and dre bly are signed for, but i say that we return to contention in 2009, and by 2010 we will be very very dangerous.

  27. ramboskithefan says:

i love that we might pick up Roy from DETROIT…..he would be great with marshall…and get stokley back in the slot…I also like one of yall thought of ORlando Scandrick…he does have game…dont sleep on those boise state broncos…..anyways…i do hope we get roy if not B Johnson would have made sense with the money we paid manuel and colbert…hummmm….lets just hope that we pick up sum solid players in the draft…..but we might just trade that mid round 1st pic for something real nice!!!

  28. 2Bailey4 says:

When did the rumor of us trading for Williams get started? And who started it? Because I think that is ridiculous. Detroit is not going to give up Roy. And especially for someone as inexperienced as young if we were to trade for him we would have to give up a lot. And I don’t know if its worth it. Would it be aweosme to have RW and BM catching passes form JC? Absolutely, but I just don’t see it happening.

  29. Broncos4lif3 says:

The broncos need to trade out the first round and add players that can help us we are only one or two players away from the big games. I think we should trade Travis henry and go after marion barber

  30. broncosrule20 says:

we need to go OT in the first round of the draft, with lepsis retiring that has left a void to fill, also Nalen cant be around much longer so our OL needs to start rebuilding, we were awful last year. If it is trtue that we are seeking roy williams then i think young, as much as i love him is a good trade. Hall was very effective and we can pick up a RB in a middle to late round like Kevin Smith form UCF( ran for 2,000) plus yrds this year) or tashard choice. Other than that our LB corps is awesome wiht the new recruits. I also say that lito sheppard is an option to go for at corner, unless bly improves this and does not get burned alot we need to get a new person. Also when Foxworth and abdullah come back they are young and should deveplo into starters, at saftey and nickel back respectively.

  31. j dub says:

    Hey yo coop!

So far so good! Roy Williams are kidding me?!?

  32. ramboskithefan says:

yah im not sure about the williams thing…but i do see the same thing that has happend in zona to happen in Detroit cuz they have Calvin and he is a tad better tallent wise so one of them will have to go some day….i dont like roys attitude but he strethes the field and catches passes in the middle…that the only way i see him doing anything for us or even going to us…..but 1st off lets get Fox and Paymah picked up…there solid!!

  33. dwillfoeveh says:

I agree what half the stuff imready says but don’t trade Young. For anything trade Henry he was a blow for us and Young did have more rushing yards then Henry and he obliterated the Cheifs. Ball hawk Fox is a keeper Shanny keep him he is fast and he could be a great backup for Champ or Dre’. In the draft, draft that running back Tashard Choice because he loves to run and can fit in our system. Next draft the receiver from Hawaii because he can be like another Stallworth or Braylon Edwards, LBs, DTs, and OL can be great but good move in getting Mcree, now we have and ass whoppin waitin for the Chargers. I have a strong feeling we might go far since Lynch didn’t retire, look what Elway did when he decided to go another year. Think about it.

  34. Broncos4lif3 says:

I dislike FOx and Paymath we should pick up a big name conner like Hall and that could help big time

  35. dwillfoeveh says:

whats wrong with ball hawk fox the name says it all you must not watch all their football games Broncos4lif3

  36. lynch4prez says:

    For one,
Henry needs to stay for one more year, yes i know last year was a big let down, but before his injury henry was top 5 in the league in yards (that was until week 6 if i recall)
    Two,
If the Roy Williams rumors are true, i think the borncos could get him with a third or fourth round and some incentive, maybe another player but his value wont be too high, he ended the season on IR and didnt have much production when he was healthy anyways.. if he did join the team he would have to be #2 to marshall beacause marshall is a better player and the future of our team at the WR positon.
    And three,
HukedOnFonicks, sorry but i gotta bash your theory, McFadden isnt worth trading up for, we would give up too much to get there and it would only set us back further, and i dont think he would fit in our system. And i couldnt disagree more with what you said about the zone blocking not working anymore, sure its seen better days than last year but you also have to remember how many O-line starters went down this year

  37. broncosrule20 says:

broncos4lif3, i like the idea of getting hall or even sheppard at corner but fox is the man. he has all the tools to become a shut down Dback.

  38. bestinthewest24 says:

THeres nothing wrong with D fox, and K Pay. I think we’re lucky to have them both. They can be the future.

  39. nheimler says:

I think Fox, Paymah, Abdullah are great! I really hope we’d keep them, but if they can become starters elsewhere then I’d be happy they go a starting position. I don’t see us really getting rid of Abdullah though as we need safeties and I’m a little leary on the Manuel signing. I’m also leary of the Niko and Colbert signings. I hope they do good for us, but I’m not completely sold on them just yet. I hope they prove me wrong. :)

  40. columbusOHbronco says:

the chances of us getting r williams is zero. we need to make a move to get a 3rd round pick wether its trading later round picks to move up or getting rid of one of or extra db’s. this draft is heavy at ol, wr, and rb and we could get a quality pic in that round. i think we should take one of each in the first 3 rounds and worry about the rest later. i know shanny is good at finding that unrestricted free agent that turns out to be the next good rb for us but most of them just become one hit wonders. we need quality proven guys that we be with us for several years and that type of player usually isnt around in the 6th or 7th round. also whats the word on al wilson have we even talked to him about coming back? i dont think niko is the answer “4.8 forty”

  41. HukedOnFonicks says:

What do you think about Shaun Alexander? I know that he was somewhat of a pussy footer last year but if he becomes a free agent, do you think the Broncos should go for him? Also, if Roy Williams does get traded, why do you think the chances are of him landing in the Mile High City?

  42. HukedOnFonicks says:

broncosrule20 i like that idea but i think we would waste too much money on either of them. We already have Champ and Dre’. I think all we need on defense is linemen. big linemen.

  43. BigSmoove says:

Everyone is talking about how awful our defense is or was… But check this; we need to draft a special play maker who can return kicks and punts and help Brandon out in the red zone… Is our defense really that bad? Or did the offense put them in constant bad situations? Yes, it would be nice to have the Giants defensive line… but how good would we be if these guys could learn to score touchdowns instead of field goals?…

  44. BigSmoove says:

I also think the play calling is getting predictable…. Is it over for Mike like Parcells and Gibbs?

  45. Denverelway says:

no mike isn’t predictable its just his o-corrdinator ever since gary kubiak left we haven’t be that good

  46. millertime3852 says:

For the Elam fans, which I am a big one, this is what I’d guess that Shanahan may be thinking. I’ve posted this before a couple weeks ago, but to me it makes sense.

Elam is accurate, very accurate…of that there is no doubt. He converted 90% of his FG tries last year, which is phenomenal…BUT

If Denver has to reach the 30 yard line in order to be in FG range with Elam vs. if Denver had a younger stronger leg and only has to make it to the 37 in order to be in range, well that could be the difference in 3 points on 4th down instead of going for it on 4th and 7 because we’re 5 yards outside Elam’s range.

And while it seems like 7 yards isn’t a huge difference, consider this:
If we draft/sign a kick-off returner that averages 30 yards per return(Like Joshua Cribbs), instead of the 23 that Andre Hall averaged AND have a FG kicker that can kick a 54 yarder instead of Elam’s 47 yarder…well that right there would mean that our Offense only has to move the ball 29 yards per possession to at least get us in FG range as our average starting position on kick-offs would be the 35 yd line, and we’d only have to get to the oppositions 36 yd line to be in range.
On the Flipside…if we only average 23 yards per kick return, then our average starting position on kick-offs would be the 28 yd line. And if we have to get to the oppositions 29 yard line to be in FG range, well now our offense has to travel 43 yards per possession to score any points.

How many more drives would our offense be able to travel 29 yards vs 43 yards is up in the air…but clearly only having to go 29 gives us a lot more chances to kick FG’s than having to go 43 yds every time.

So even if Elam makes 27 out of 30 attempts(90%), that’s still not as many points as a younger kicker that would be in range one extra drive per game, which would be 46 attempts, and making 80%..which would be 37 made attempts on a season…which would be 30 more points in a season…which very well could have been the difference in 2 of our OT games…but also which would have been ZERO help in our 30 plus point losses to the Chargers and Lions. Heck, a kicker can only do so much.

  47. tomnalen36 says:

Fox would start for any team in the league except broncos and packers hes about as good as a nickel back/back-up safety as you can get. Paymah is also an excellent dime back he will stay far as i’m concerned. I would like to see peppers or R williams come to denver but i wont be mad if we dont get either.
I feel its a good change of scenery for colbert maybe not a breakout year but a good 800-900 yds for colbert if he starts #2

  48. broncos4life67 says:

columbusOHbronco…..I disagree with you. Apparently you have forgotten ring of honor member TD. He was drafted in the 6th round and became the lowest drafted back to rush for over 1,000 yards in his rookie year. He helped the Broncos win back to back superbowls, one of only 4 players to rush for over 2000 yards in a season, and adding another 400+ in the post season for a total of 2,476 (an NFL record regular season and post season combined), and he also set an NFL record for most rushing TD’s in a single Superbowl with 3. Injury cut his career short, not lack of talent. Backs like TD in the 6th round are rare………not non-existant.

  49. broncosrule20 says:

hukedonfonikcs, i am not saying we should immediately go and get someone like hall or sheppard. I agree that Dlinemen are a much bigger priority. But unless bly improves this season i think we should move foxworth as starter or get someone esle as bly was getting burned too much last year.

  50. bronco15beast says:

wat do u think about drafting earl benett he would be a good wr to team up with his former team mate jay cutler and his strong arm
