No Panic…..it’s Early

August 16th, 2009 - 9:18pm by mark_cooper

Here’s what I know about preseason:

It’s shorter.
Guys have only been hitting for only a few weeks.
Offense always takes longer to jell than defense.
Many mistakes get made in the early games.
New offense, new defense — could take a while to get in a groove.
Have patience.
Controversy sells newspapers and fills airtime on talk radio.

Papers want a QB controversy?? Think about it. Simms will get plenty of time on the field to earn the starting job if he plays well, no worries. May the best man win.

Why start a panic when we have plenty of field time over the next few weeks before the opener.

Mondono, I liked what I saw on the DP site, pretty complete, nice stuff. Were you mentioning anything specific?

Brandon WILL make a difference, glad he has a fresh start, hopefully his last brush with the law.

Vick’s an Eagle…tough city, I mean tough.

We are rebuilding and have tough schedule. If we as fans are realistic it will be a fun year. I was personally bummed for Moreno as that’s a frustrating way to start a NFL career. I know, my rookie opener against Pittsburgh, I blew an ankle ((bad)) and it hurt me for the rest of the season.

Hey Coop, thank you so much for posting this. People are panicking over a pre season game and it was our first one. I mean I have high hopes and expectations for this team but I don’t expect perfection… they will make mistakes, that’s life. Orton will gel into this offense and he’ll be just fine, I have faith in the kid, as I do the whole team. Yeah Simms looked great against the niners… who wouldn’t against 2nd & 3rd string players?? He had it easier. It would a fair match for Simms to start against the Seahawks and have his chance to go up against their starters… otherwise we’ll never know if he was just having a good day against SF or if it was because our offense was clearly better than their D or if it was simply he was going against their 2nd stringers.

People want to see us fail so they’ll write any piece of crap they can think of to make us look like our season is doomed based on our first pre season game. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. We certainly don’t have a “QB controversy”… let me guess, Jokes came up with that one, haha. It’s not even a battle between Orton & Simms… it’s simply a test to see who should be our starter. The things people do just to sell stories… grrrr. Then its another thing to believe it… grrr again.

The fans around here need to have a little more faith in their team. Good grief!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ‘09!!!!

  2. eternalorangeandblue says:

yea man i think we are really starting to separate the bandwagoners from the fans

  3. eternalorangeandblue says:

    GOOOOOOOOOO BRONCOOOOOOOS!!!!

  4. Dynamicdave says:

Tell them straight, Coop. People panic at the tip of a hat. I see it all the time. Everybody has a right to blog, to be certain, however, after the 1st preseason game the bandwagon fans popped up out of the woodwork and just began with the negative bashings and such. Never hear from them anytime else except when they have something to complain about.

As for the media, I’ve mentioned to others before, that it’s just like the song by Don Henley, “Dirty Laundry.” Some of the negative bloggers should write for them, ha, ha.

I’m stoked for the season and optimistic. The more they play, the more comfortable they will get. Orton will settle down, I feel, and if not, then Simms is there. We actually have the negative bashers that said to put Brandstater in there over Orton? Get real. Brandstater isn’t even near ready yet. They just like to talk smack.

  5. emaldo says:

Whatever the reason for the INTs its all good, Orton will get better as time goes and he gets more reps-no biggie. I have to say though our D looked really really good. 17 pts on 3 turnovers is pretty impressive, we brought that much desired QB pressure all night. Peterson looks like he can be great in this defense. I think for the most part we have some small details on offense that need to be corrected and timing issues that need to be adjusted, but no major holes that the next 3 pre-seaon games can’t fix…plus, PLUS we got Dawk and BMarsh back…at this point we look way better than a lot of teams did. We will be better than everyone thinks guaranteed.

  6. headlesshorseman says:

    Coop,

Great positive outlook. I admit, I am one of those who are freaking out. I do remain hopeful, but it is difficult to remain optimistic. It’s clear we are rebuilding, but the RB curse continues with the injuries and I never expected too much out of Orton, but jeez, he didn’t even meet the low expectations I had….so far. Simms looked comfortable though. Defense looks like after a few more games and they will be strong. I like the WR roster, but Orton has to loosen up. He looked really stiff and not in control. I’m still very excited about this season, but I’m just being realistic, the league has many great teams to compete with, and the Broncos have some things to sort out.

  7. griff77302003 says:

THe National Media hates New england because their really good. Josh McDaniels was a part of the butt kicking so hatered comes Denver’s way . Go Denver Broncos

  8. Dynamicdave says:

headlesshorseman, except for 3 throws, Orton looked crisp. You’re trying to over-analyze this. You’re going to pop a vein. Rub your ears and say woo-sah…..

  9. 07elway says:

Woo-sah??? What the?? hahahahaha LOL Dave. That was too funny. My sides are gonna split!! I think I have a new favorite word, woo-sah! HAHA woo-sah woo-sah… oh good Lord, think I’m losing it!! Woo-sah! Somebody stop me!

  10. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I am not worried about the Broncos at all. If Orton must make egregious mistakes, now is the time to get them out of the way. In all honesty, he will excel for the Broncos and we are going to “shock the world.” Bandwagoners aren’t welcome when we take the NFL by storm this season. As always, GO BRONCOS!!!

  11. Kurt Wagaman says:

Orton or Simms? That is part of what preseason is about! May we be able to figure out who deserves to strart at every position on this team. And please, may they be able to stay healthy throughout the season.

  12. whitebronco#1 says:

I’m with headlesshorseman about KO looking stiff (not in the expectations and that). But he will loosen up, for sure. There’s too much on him right know, and I think he’s beginning to swallow it.

As I said, I’ll wait for preseason game 3. Then I’ll have a better picture of the whole team (not just a player).

    Go Broncooos!

  13. monodono says:

    COOP,
I’m with you when you said:”May the best man win.” I think this goes for ALL positions, even QB.
Coach McDaniels will put the best players on the field no matter what position and I could’nt agree more. I’m supporting all three QB’s to play well and if that creates a “controversy” so be it. Having three good QB’s would not be a bad situation to be in.

As far as the DP I was just pointing out a statements Marshal made that sounded like He wants to get back on the field with His TEAM.

I hope Moreno heals well He should, He’s young. I really did’nt see Him starting until atleast the 3rd or 4th regular season game, coming in late and being a young rookie. This may push that back some.

What you know about preseason football is exactly what I know about preseason football.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  14. rev79 says:

I hope we can be competitive with the top of the league (Pittsburgh, New York, New England, Baltimore, etc…) when we play them this season.

  15. AussieBronco1 says:

How can fans be freaking out over a 17-16 loss to the 49ers…on their home field? And that was a result of a broken defensive set, not overall bad play. Personally, I would like to see Marshall booted out of Denver ASAP so we can rid ourselves of his disruptive influence. If possible, trade him for a great LB or NT, that would be terrific…or an experienced O-lineman who can play multiple positions. We’ve got enough receivers to implement Coach Mac’s offensive scheme successfully. Get rid of the cancer and get on with our season.

  16. TheRoyalBeast says:

Well said coop. been what I’ve been trying to say as well

Panic never improves a situation, just wasted energy. Sure Orton played badly, and we lost….you are not the guy with insight, you are just a guy who watched the game like everyone else. We all know what happened.

My favorite quote from this message was “May the best man win”. That’s my philosophy as well. The QBs will get equal opportunity with first team. And YES Brandon “The Beast” Marshall WILL, make a difference….That is why when some said we could do without him, I said…I’d rather we didn’t have to. Practice Makes Perfect, They’ll get there.

~Here’s Hoping We Shock The NFL
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  17. rjpdenver98 says:

ORTON,HILLS & MARSHALL=AIKMAN,SMITH & IRVIN.Time will tell.Once everybody gets use to each other, great things will happen.Orton moved the ball great FRIDAY night.I would rather see us loose all preseason games if that is what it takes for us to get better.Denver will make it to the playoffs but to get to the SUPER BOWL will take.I believe if MARSHALL has a good or poor year he will not be back next year.

  18. headlesshorseman says:

    Dynamicdave,

From what I remember, Orton didn’t seem to scan the field at all, just had his feet in cement and threw to the first guy he looked at whether he was open or not. Oh, geez, I think I am going to pop a vein.
    woo-sah!

    GO BRONCOS!

  19. raidrhadr says:

Don’t worry headless. Orton has a complicated offense to master. He will get better with the progressions and check-downs in time. Until then it’s a mental challenge more than anything to absorb a buttload of info and transpose it into 3-4 seconds time in the pocket. Pretty soon it will all come to him and we will see good things. Whenever you are feeling your heart ready to jump out of your chest just think of the 3 sacks our 1st team D pulled off againts SF….and of course….woo-sah…

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!! South Stands Forever.

  20. mark_cooper says:

I agree with you raidehadr and I think he’s going through his reads versus playing football…seems like while he’s going through his reads he’s a little robotic but as one gets more comfortable with the system it irons itself out.

Think about this. When you first learned something you went by the book but once you understood it you did it withoout thinking and made improvisions that made it easier. I’m not making excuses for anyone just my opinion from what I saw.

I came here from the CANES and we played a pro-set under Howard Schnellenburger, but when I got here I was the same way in Reeve system and play book. It was the size of the old yellowpages before Al Gore invented the the internet. :o) “had to go there sorry”..boy am I dating myself.

Hopefully we don’t see an escalations with Brandon on his contract issues. I think he knows he’s between a rock and hard place. I love the guys ability, “Superstar” but until he proves his hip is healed and he can take the beating would any of you put millions of dollars at stake knowing you could lose most of it, if he’s not able to take the beating and goes down?? That’s the difference between Brandon and the Atlanta receiver, (can’t remember) his name right now. :o)

How about Brett Farve, wow. Back at it with the Vikes. Could be the diifference in 10 wins last year and the Superbowl this year??

    HMMMM

  21. raidrhadr says:

Roddy White? Brett makes the Vikes an instant top 5 SB contender for sure Coop…..and speaking of WRs and class acts….How about Larry Fitzgerald restructuring his contract, voluntarily, to free up cap space. What a guy. He is my new NFL (non-Bronco) hero. B-Marsh IS in a tough spot. I think he’ll stay behind Jabar Gaffney on the depth chart until:

    1. He gets and stays healthy.
    2. He makes a committment to the team. (contract or not)
    3. He convinces everyone in the organization he is free and clear of any mischief.

  22. generalsterlingprice says:

I agree there is absolutely no reason to panic from a Pre-season loss, but There is reason for “concern” about Kyle Orton’s terrible play. He looked like a Deer caught in the headlights each time he was on the field

Yeah, it’s the first pre-season game and his first game action as a Bronco but I can’t remember the last time I saw such a poor performance.

Chris Simms on the other hand looked calm and collected, I’m curious to see how he would play against a first team Defense for a full game.

Here’s hoping this weeks game gives us a better look at what’s in store for this season, because last week was rough!

  23. kitty1022 says:

Not to bring up Cutler’s name again, but I would love to be able to have tickets for the preseason game versus the Bears on the 30th. I can’t comprehend the boos and words that fans will say to him when he is there for that game. I live in Chicago, IL (Bear Country) and get so much slack for giving up Cutler to the Bears but I remind them that if the Bears somehow tank (hoping they do) that we get there First round draft pick next year! So if for some reason Cutler gets hurt or the Bears finish with the worst record we could get the First pick of next year’s draft and of course that means Tim Tebow would be available.

As far as the rest of the team, there’s a reason they play preseason games, it’s to get acquainted with there teammates and coaches and they are getting used to a new system with McDaniels.

I just hope they have improved and jelled by the time I arrive in Denver for the Thanksgiving game versus the Giants.

  24. George Bush says:

It is the same thing every year, all the fans get nervous and are just hoping that the players will be at the top of their game.

But this is football and there are so many intangibles that can destroy a season. McDaniel’s system is going to be complex because that is the way he knows he can beat other teams. As they gain knowledge of the schemes the players will grow in confidence and all those practice interceptions thrown by Orton will be forgotten.

As long as they all try their best we can ask for no more.

  25. thundersrevenge says:

Yes it’s pre-season and it’s always rough when building a team. One thing to keep in mind as we watch all of this: In 2005 Jake Plummer was throwing picks left and right in preseason. He went on to have the best season of his career, in my opinion, leading the Broncs’ to the NFC championship.

Maybe Orton is the guy, maybe he isn’t. One way or the other we can’t lynch him just yet. (I’m sure he still has stuff in boxes from the move to Denver:)

  26. thundersrevenge says:

BTW……..wouldn’t it have been funny if Cleveland had picked up Vick? I think I would have lost it watching Vick throw down field towards the “dog pound”. :)!!!!!!

  27. 1golfdoc says:

i’m not ready to throw mcd under the bus yet but i hope his eyes are looking at the qb situation with an open assessment. whether he continues with 3 picks/game, it’s too much for orton on any team to overcome. simms looked better in my opinion, i know, he wasn’t playing against starters. look at it this way, i don’t think he was playing with many starters as well. i just hope there is an honest competition to play the one that can lead this offense.

  28. raidrhadr says:

Thunder….that is just WRONG but very very funny. I think we all realize what needs to happen and that it will require some PATIENCE on our part as fans. See you all on the next post.

    GO BRONCOS!!!! South Stands Forever

  29. monodono says:

    COOP!
What’s your take on tonights game?
I think we will see a more calm Orton and a Zazzed up D! I just hope they run the ball more on first down especially early in the game and establish that running game.

thundersrevenge, I think you mean The AFC Championship.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  30. thundersrevenge says:

sorry, you’re right I did mean AFC.

  31. wanagi says:

    hey Coop

man Our first team offense couldn’t do jack against the seagulls 2nd team defense….I hate that i moved here to seattle…being a bronco fan isn’t easy living here…especially around old division rivals…boy am I gonna have to hear it tomorrow…at work..

Kyle looked better last night…but until he did the Jake the snake move..only difference though Jake was alot better than Kyle will ever be…our Rookie looked shell shocked out there…held the ball way to long…I was worried he was gonna get hurt…our running backs are the worst in the league…except for moreno..he reminds of portis when he was with us..only difference is moreno has alot more skills…everyone that our coach brought in..stinks…lamont can;t run more than 3 yards..buckhalter….well…I’ll be nice and say nothing…Jabar can’t catch he never could..has more drops catchs than boost mobile has dropped calls…Goodman reminds me of Ray Crockett..gets burnt for every touchdown pass thrown…he was burnt for both touchdown passes last night…dawkins is old….he is no john lynch…lynch worked hard to keep his body in playin condition…kyle is well..lets just say not intelligent….look at the time outs we wasted…and after the time outs were used, the Delay of games…the wrong receivers he hits….a Die Hard Fan here since the age of 7, 25 years later..my happiness is dying hard….

Why won’t B-Marsh pull his head out of his you know what and get his head into the game..he is letting our team down..but most of all he is letting us down as fans…Just like Cutler did…only difference though we don’t need b-marsh like we needed the crybaby….hate to say this but he don’t want to be a Bronco than he don’t deserve to wear the greatest teams jersey cut him or trade him..he’s a waste by wasting his time crying around in the media…we need players who want to be a Bronco..Who is serious about being a Bronco…Not no money hungry crybabies…I loved Marshall..I bragged about him all the time…told everyone he was the next big thing at WR….since Jerry Rice…yes

anyways I’m done ranting sorry you all..but have no bronco fans here to rant to..these seagull fans talk to much crap..

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

we will survive this season, even if it’s the worst season in our history!! Because we are The Greatest Franchise in the NFL….Because we are the Greatest Fans in the NFL!!!

  32. Crush Arizona says:

As far as the offense goes , yeah they did look good on the first couple of possesions but Orton did allmost get picked on the play before the TD…That being said McD use up all his timeouts befor the second qtr and could not even challenge a play, and the D didnt even know their assingnements half the time they couldnt even get set on several plays, I hope they figure it out soon…What do you think Coop?

  33. Crush Arizona says:

Oh yeah, for those of you that collect trading cards whatch out for the ones that say FRANCHISE on them. I got a score card last season for Cuttler and it said the Franchise on it and what happens? well I got one that said Marshall the Franchise this year and look whats happening there…Does anybody believe in JInxes?

  34. Ks-BroncoGirl says:

Hey CrushArizona…I hear what you are saying. I’m almost scared to buy new broncos jersies/clothing on them. I got a Plummer for my bday then he is benched…almost got a Cutler but son got me a Bailey tee that’s pretty cool then he gets hurt…scared to buy anything that has a player’s name on it anymore…see what the Not for long league has done to us…lol.
