My Pick: Steelers 17-14 over the Cards

January 31st, 2009 - 1:16pm by mark_cooper

Looks like the majority went with the Cards….Me, I like the Steelers…but I went 0-4 in the playoffs so we’ll have to see what happens. Like I mentioned, I’d need a loan if I was a gambler. I hate to lose so I wouldn’t make a very good gambler.

Caught a bunch of redfish in Mosquito Lagoon near Titusville, Florida over the weekend and had fun golfing at Tim Wakefield’s Charity Golf Tournament. It was interesting talking to Jim Rice, who just went into the MLB Hall of Fame. He’s always at Tim Wakefield’s event so we chatted about the day he was confirmed and the interview curcuit he was on, etc. I’m not a big baseball guy/fan but admire athleticism just the same. Great player I just didn’t really follow the sport growing up but he got a very nice reception at the tournament. Congrats to him and his family.

By the way, the Space Coast Early Intervention Center is one incredible place. They help kids from about a year old that have disabilities integrate into the mainstream and it will bring tears to your eyes as you hear some of the incredible success stories. If you have friends or know anyone that has a special needs child, you need to tell them about this very special place.

Coach McDaniels made a number of hires, and I, like many of you, only know what I’ve read about many of them. It’s somewhat like the draft…only time will tell.

Was on the Mile High Sports radio AM 1510 KCKK show hosted by Gil Whiteley yesterday from 12-1, and had a blast. Gil and I did radio years ago, back in the early 90’s.

Also, if you don’t have plans for the SUPER BOWL. I and a number of Alumni will be at Mikuni Sushi Restaurant and Bar for a SUPER BOWL PARTY, Sunday, February 1, 2009; 3:30PM, Park Meadows Shopping Center, benefits the local food bank.

Wow!! just thought about this…….. SUPER BOWL XLIII and I played in XXI……kinda makes you feel old…….nah!!!!!!!!!! :o )

Work Hard, Play Hard!!!

Wats up man you are awesome, it is awesome i get to be first this time. Coach Mcdaniels is looking very good

  2. eternalorangeandblue says:

Shannon Sharpe SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME!!!!! Common man! The guy retired as the greatest tight end in history receiving wise and wasnt even touched until very recently. And the man who eclipsed him is a so called “first ballot” as well. This is just complete and utter bull@#$t I want explanations!

  3. 15themarshall15 says:

HOW MANY ARE MAD ABOUT SHANNON? i guarantee our blogs are gonna be lit up with mad fans as they should be. look at the numbers of broncos in the hall of fame compared to others. I mean honestly the voting sucks. Dennis Smith- hall of fame in my book
Steve Atwater- hall of fame in my book
Karl Mecklenburg- hall of fame in my book
Terrell Davis- hall of fame in my book
SHANNON SHARPE- HALL OF FAME IN MY BOOK

Thats 5 that to me there is no reason why they are not in, i mean i know TD didnt have a long career but numbers and what you meant to the game is what should be considered hall of fame worthy.

Any other names you guys can make a case for cause i know i could name more, floyd little, better stop though i could get mad lets go protest in canton about this crappy voting

  4. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Hey I just left a message on another blog have to add one here. I cant use the language I want to here. It is a crime he did not get in, and great point about Tony G, he is just now breaking some of Sharps records and they are calling him a first ballot. How does he not get in right away. The hall and the voters are a joke. The broncos ring of fame has more pride and credibility to it then the hall. UNBELIEVABLE……….

  5. BroncoRanger08 says:

Shannon Sharpe was the greatest Tight End to ever play the game.
    Period.
He paved the way for the Tony Gonzolezes and Dallas Clarks in the NFL, won 3 superbowls, blocked for a running back that ran for 2000 yard in a single season, and recieved a plethora of Pro Bowl Invitations. What else does he have to do? I cant even explain how angry i am right now. I mean, how do you NOT vote for him? Canton plays favorites: pure and simple. Thats how it always is with Denver: we are always overlooked for the “celebrities” of the NFL and never get the respect we deserve. Only two players in Canton is a tragedy: Denver has been to 6 Super Bolws and has won two of them Back-to-Back. 6 SUPER BOWLS! A team doesnt make it to 6 Super Bowls without talent and Hall of Fame Players. Maybe someday Canton will open their eyes but until then my trust in Hall of fame voting has been seriously shaken
To the young players of the Denver Broncos: don’t be overlooked, be the best and remind the NFL every week why you will settle for nothing less then greatness.

I @#@!!!** knew Shannon would not get in to HOF. Why do owners get in?
I have no problem w/ B Smith, Woodson, or McDainel. D Thomas was a very good LB, BUT Gradisher TJackson, Mechenburg were just as good if not better!!! Why does the HOF look down on recievers and TE? It took Art Monk how many years? How can Michael Irvin get in sooner than Carter?Carter was #2 in all stats. Shannon was #1 in all stats for TEs. How many playoffs games did Dthomas win? How Many SBs? Shannon was ALL Decade team too. I hate this time of year cuz all the #!^*&?” HOF snubs that the Broncos get every year. It seems like every years KC has a HOFer
and they won one SB a long time ago and have no play off runs. Thomas got alot of sacks agaist bad teams and very little agaist good teams.
Denver is missing 8-10 HOFers. Next year will be worse cuz Rice, E Smith will get in before any one else.

  7. louisianabroncofan says:

I guess i’ll say it again. accept i’ve changed my final score. i now have what i’ll call my final prediction.

    Arizona- 31
    Pittsburgh- 23

it’ll be a close and good game. and then it will be 7 months of no-football-hell. i hate the offseason. HATE it.

  8. 07elway says:

Well I’ve expressed my beyong-anger over the Sharpe snub… complete BS is an understatement about it all. Don’t get me started on that again!

Now that’s been touched on a bit, I can acknowledge the COOP!!!! Lovin’ your blogs lately, hope you can keep us entertained for at least a little while for 7 months of boredom. What is a girl supposed to do without football… I’m gonna need therapy!!!

As for the Super Bowl, for once I honestly don’t really mind who wins. I like the Steelers because they’re a good strong team but then I like the Cardinals b/c right now they truly remind me of our 2 SB winning teams 10 & 11 years ago. We were such underdogs in both of those games and yet we took home the victory. I’ll be okie dokie with whoever wins, just REALLY thankful the Crybabies aren’t in it. Whew!!

And I really feel your pain louisianabroncofan… I hate the offseason too. Can you say BORED TO TEARS!!!! That’s an understatement too but close enough.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  9. Orang_Crush420 says:

Proof positive that the Hall of Fame voting is a joke!!!

  10. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

    Coop,

Reading your blog always brings a smile to my face so thanks! Anyway, I say it will be Cards 33 Steelers 24. Kurt Warner is going to be the MVP and the Cardinals will gain an early lead and play from ahead en route to this win.

  11. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

    I’m not sold on sproles… yes he’s quick… but I’m just not 100% about a 5’6 guy… tooooo little…

  12. Black Horse says:

I also thought about Sproles, but to be serious-he really hasn’t been hit. We have too many soft backs on our roster. Hillis is the truth, no question. Ryan T. has to prove himself and stay off IR. I got a funny feeling there will be a new RB in town. Changing the subject- If the Steelers don’t score 21 to 24 pts, they’re done. Cards-30 Steelers-20.

  13. 15themarshall15 says:

how long we been playing LT broncobailey99 he is only like 5 7 sproles is gonna be good he would thrive here itd be a big pick up even in the return game
other free agents to look at: 1. Oj Atogwe rams 2. Mike brown bears 3. jonathan vilma saints 4. julius peppers panthers 4. albert haynesworth titans 5. nnamdi asomugha raiders 6. terrell suggs ravens 7. zack thomas cowboys old but still good 8. ray lewis ravens 9. bart scott ravens 10. brandon jacobs giants thats a tough backfield him and hillis OUCH 11. channing crowder dolphins 12. james farrior steelers 13 jemaine phillips bucs 14 bertrand berry back would be sick but he is like our old style 4 3 we are gong 3 4 14. one id like to see in restricted free agency atari bigby it would be like having steve atwater back this guy can lay a big hit

  14. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

5’7?… Really?… Check your resources… He’s 5’10, and 221 lbs… Sproles is 5’6 and 181 lbs… LT is a bigger body that could BREAK a tackle if neaded… once rapped up, sproles is easy to take down

Now ,now, I know sproles did good, I wouldn’t hate the fact having him on our team… But I don’t want him being our premier or 2nd back behind Hillis… Honestly, I want Hillis back at FB, but a FB that does a lot in the game…

  15. broncos20 says:

    Hei Coop,

    Thanks again for the post…

    unfortunately I pick the Cards…21-17..aha

okie,,,I have to give Sproles credit where he deserves it….he alone took on that Colts defense…on third downs,,,they screened him…and he breaks out to the open field….talk about instant shift and acceleration….

  16. mooncamping says:

Looks like being an NFL member can keep you busy even into older age.
    It´s a good thing.

I think the Cardinals will pound the ball, and surprise everyone with down to earth no circus catches. Warner will be composed and tougher than anyone thought. Four rushing touchdowns and short yardage pass receptions, possibly culminating in more scores. Pittsburghs receivers will get nothing, and Willie Parker will be held to approximately 80 yards, no scampers.
The Steelers are exceedingly talented on defense, but not as physically dominant as many people would like to believe. The Arizona Cardinals came in under the radar, game planning to meet the chalenges presented by every opponent. They have more up their sleeves, and that is hard core football. Roethlisberger keeps the chains moving, but manages only two passing touchdowns.
So, final score: Cardinals 35 Steelers 14

  17. texark-fan says:

DONT’T FEEL OLD MARK, i still have an unopened bottle of orange crush from the first one. every once in awhile i turn it around and read the back and remember allthe good teams we beat.
    steelers by 9
denver fans get used to it. we have been the black sheep of the nfl world from the start. with one exception oakland. woodson said it best, his frist thought was waiting for the name sharp to be announced. rod has always been a class act and should be in the hall, smith should be, thomas not yet
and yes some owners. but yhey should not take the place of a tight end.
‘hello mr president, send out the nat guard, couse were killing these guys’

  18. 22hillis says:

Defense wins champinships! Steelers 24, Cards 13

  19. imready says:

Just say no to getting offensive players in the off season. It was a freak year to have so many injuries last season, no reason to go into a panic. We have some very talented backs and need a few good men on defense to win a championship! No old farts either please, get some young guys with few years under their belts that are proven performers. I think we need to make some quality pick ups in free agency as well as have a good draft . The only way the defense will catch up to our offense in some positions is thru free agency or trades since it takes a few years to develope some positions. I wonder how effective Dumervil and Moss would be in a 3-4 with the speed they have?I know it’s a reach but I wonder if those guys could play inside linebackers in the 3-4 ? I suppose that would depend on how well they could tackle. DJ and Woodyard on the outside with their speed. Get some be hairy ass guys up front . Don’t beat me up too bad guys, just having fun with the current roster! Man, I won’t respect after this post! :) Go Broncos!

  20. 15themarshall15 says:

ok ladainian is 5 10 so when they release him too we take both of em just so we dont have to play them, same with nnamdi if we get the chance at him give him the money oaklands d is crap without him. kc has no body we need but if they wanna get rid of tony g thats nice of em that way we dont have to have the best corner ever to play the game covering a tight end

  21. texark-fan says:

mark, why do we not have a GM yet?any thoughts

  22. royalbroncofan1 says:

It’s gonna come down to Pittsburgh blitz vs. Arizona run/pass blocking.

  23. RSH says:

I was pulling for the Arizona Cardinals upset, but wow didn’t Big Ben look like the new millennium version of another number 7 out there tonight?

Speaking of that other number 7, John Elway. Did anyone else notice at the coin toss how terribly he has aged?

P.S. Casey Wiegmann isn’t going to retire. Excellent news to begin the offseason.

  24. monodono says:

RHS, Where did you hear that? I need conformation! link please. we need Casey to come back for at least another year or two. This is Huge.

Pitt by 4. on jan 20 I said Pitt by three.
This TEAM controls everything about the game and thats how I want The Broncos to play with CONTROL. I don’t care about scoreing 30 or 40 points I care about CONTROL.

I’m glad it’s over. Now we can talk about who’s availlable in Free Agency and what kind of trades The Broncos might make.

    Any Ideas COOP? Please help….

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  25. monodono says:

    Sorry RSH…

  26. Cutler6101 says:

This is sad that sharpe didn’t make it….the guy was the best at what he did. TD should also be there. I feel like we don’t get the respect we deserve. It would be nice to come out next season and run over ppl. It will be a tough year with the schedule strength and all. I really don’t want any players from san diego LT or sproles I want our own players to step up and play big boy football…what happened to the players that played hurt all the time. And it’s not that LT fell off it is the SD playbook that isn’t putting him into position because #17 the cry baby has to have his way. A lot of ppl are saying go defense all the way but we will need to make up for any players leaving on offense and there is always room for improvement. I would like to see some playmakers on the defense also. I can’t wait to watch the pro bowl…and then the draft and after that really nothing until the 09 season starts up. The offseason sucks! How bad did Elway look RSH?

  27. 15themarshall15 says:

dj is playing inside linebacker next season in our three four and we are taking a true nose tackle first day of draft its been reported and robertson can stay if he takes a paycut

  28. 07elway says:

Well, well, well… where you been hiding monodono? Weren’t you the one always asking where everyone else was…hmmm. Just being my ornery self… ;)

Don’t know what RSH saw but Elway does not look that bad… not as bad as he/she is making it seem. Was nice seeing him there and speaking of the great #7 anyone see the commercial he was in?? It was funny… I was pleasantly surprised to him. He looked pretty good if you ask me.

Kind of surprised the Cardinals didn’t win… was kind of hoping ot see them pull off a shocker and see the underdogs win. They reminded me so much of our first SB winning team, I wanted Arizona to win for numerous reasons but that was the big one. But on the flip side, I’m happy for the Steelers… they were a rock solid team this past season, they earned it!! However, I’m hoping McD can get us to the big game and get us a trophy and all that confetti!! That would be refreshing.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  29. RSH says:

Elway looked very old, his skin is very wrinkled and leathery looking. Try to YouTube, Super Bowl XLIII’s coin toss or do a Google image search along those lines and include the name John Elway in the image search.

As for Casey Wiegmann, the article can be found at the following link on ESPN.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3877106

  30. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

… No Homo, but I think Elway had that nice old”er” guy look. He’s not all wrinkly like a pug dog… he had that Rich Successful old”er”man look…

As much as I wanted the Cards to win… Congrats steelers, ya’ll earned it. Man those last few minutes were INSANE… well yea…

    Bailey Out!

  31. monodono says:

WOW! Great news thanks for the link RSH.

Cutler6101, this off season will be like no other in the last 14years. There will be lot’s of stuff to watch, read, and research this year, this is Great.

07elway, I’ve been reading but not posting and on other sites digging for info that we can’t get here, unfortunatly… and I’ve been bored with the talk about the SB. Now that it’s over we need to get focused and feed our minds and find the gem’s of talent out there. Hopefully we can get some help around here now the hype is over.
Coop! Help us find the Treasure in the Free Agency jungle. Who’s availlable? Who want’s to be a Bronco? What kind of trades are out there? I ask theses questions BECAUSE…
    SUCKAS GOT TO KNOW!

15themarshall15, were do you get your info? is it relliable? any links to these “reports”? please share them.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  32. broncomaniac4life says:

yo what up? way to go steelers. Who woulda thunk it that the Cards would give ‘em a go. Fitzy is the stuff. Now if the Cards (TERRIBLE D+got Smoked by Pats…everyone thought they would get worked in the play-offs) can make it happ’n then there is no reason why we can’t go deep in the 2nd Season in ’09 season. Play your best ball after turkey day. End of discussion. establish running game early in the season w/Hillis (BEAST!)+Cory boyd (anyone see him play for South Carolina?? Kid can ball). Change up w/Quick6 (sproles back). I know Cutler is our #1 guy+best weapon. BUT….so was Elway, and he didn’t win anyting until TD+Gibbs established the running game. Run the ball+play sound D, fools. That’s the only way to win in January. punches n bunches.

  33. broncomaniac4life says:

yo-commenting on Sproles. look @ his numbers and forget ’bout his size. That kid can play. He is Not easy to bring down w/an arm tackle. Now being a premier back for 16 grueling games….unlikely…he might have a few good years, but to carry the load for that long…not gonna happ’n, cap’n. Then again…look @ Warrick Dunn. he’s a stud. He had help w/Alstott in Bucs+Duckets+Turner for Falcons. Dunn has been a premier back in the NFL for 10 years. End of discussion. I’m not say’n Sproles will be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a few great years+many good years as a starting back. Joe Morris, Dunn, james brooks, MJD (super stocky!!!), Tiki wasn’t that big…Sanders is a legend…it’s possible for a small back to dominate, but it has to be in the right system…I think w/’bolts OL Sproles can be starting RB. holla back..punches n bunches.

  34. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

… yeah… but none of those guys you mentioned were 5’6 and 181 lbs… The thing is he would be a good complamentry back, but we need someone that is good enough to be a premier back on our team… and last I checked, we have plenty of back up/ or complamentry back on our team… So why spend money on him when we could pick up Ward from NY to be our premier back for at least a season, draft a 1st round RB in the 2010 Draft and we’ll have our new RB (from 2010 draft) w/ Ward as the complamentry back… Just saying, the guys not a stud… he’s just quick… and what happends when he gets nailed?… dead… squashed like a bug…

  35. 15themarshall15 says:

    forget ward get jacobs

  36. 15themarshall15 says:

it says doom will probably play outside linebacker good luck to him

  37. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

Jacobs will cost too much, Giants won’t let him go either… Our best bet is to either get ward our just stick w/ who we have and wait another year…

  38. 15themarshall15 says:

TD says torain can be that guy with time ive heard we are gonna either get one in the draft or in free agency but we could keep the ones we got i dont care all up to wat kind of personal they wanna go with, we wanna go to the playoffs next year

  39. bronco#80 says:

Sproles can be a premier running back in the NFL. Like broncobraniac4life said you cant arm tackle this guy, hes tougher than a nail and nobody can touch him.

  40. bronco#80 says:

I would rather take sproles over ward, because we alredy got hillis!!!

  41. bronco#80 says:

havent been to rotoworld.com for awhile, hadn’t realized that they give every little detail about everthing going around the NFL. Good stuff, 15themarshall15

  42. monodono says:

    COOP!
    were are ya?
    How was that 07elway? Hehe…

Thanks for the link 15themarshall15, good stuff.

  43. 07elway says:

I’m here monodono… no need to fret!! Don’t worry, be happy!! :p
Got loads and loads of homework… college is a pain!!

Man this was short & sweet… freaking myself out over here.
And I must agree, where did ya go Coopster!!!
Fall in a fishing hole did ya… hmmm!? Ah, I crack myself up!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  44. broncomaniac4life says:

Whoa…stop the presses. “squashed like a bug”?!?! are you kidding me?! Did you see how well he did when LT was hurt? granted it was only for a few games, but that “hungry” dog played ST+RB. His yardage total was off the charts. DEF get Sproles over Ward. I can see why broncoscountry is suspect. Last “small” back was “Q-tip” Quentin (Sooners)+he only had 1 good game then he got hurt. I feel your pain, but…Sproles is legit. He was legit in college. heisman contender. he was a ST demon for stink’n ‘bolts for 3 years+when LT was IR Sproles carried that team. Gates didn’t have a great Dec. When you played the stink’n ‘bolts+Phyllis it was Sproles the D game planned against. ok…change subject…

who here thinks we need new safetys???? josh barret isn’t the answer. McCree got hurt+was avg @ best. Manuel is below avg. Most you all want Atogwe or Mike Brown, but….build the team through the draft…
My top picks that we should draft
    1. Colt Anderson-Montana-Tough as NAILZ!+smart. he’s a steal @ rd 5-7. could be the next version of Steve Foley (for all your “old timers”)
    2. Patrick Chung-Oregon-Prob the best overall safety in the draft. great size+very aggressive. he’s a 2nd rd pick, but should we get a safety that early???? that’s the ???
    3. Louis Delma-Western MI-not that big, but very heady+physical. should be around in rd 3-4. Solid. Reminds me of Mike Brown
    4. Emanuel Cook-south carolina-bobby sanders clone??? I think so, in the box safety that can make plays+has speed to cover the deep middle
    5. Michael Hamlin-Clemson-great size. 4 year starter. leader in college. Seems like a great fit+I bet he’s a 3-4 rd guy

    punches n bunches
am I right or am i right??? punches n bunches

  45. mark_cooper says:

Well I’m on a roll…1 in a row. Called the game on defense alone. But would have loved the story behind Kurt Warner…class act…first class act!!! That guy impresses me to no end!!!

To bad either side had to take the lose. GREAT GAME!!

You say, you crack yourselves up? I say, you crack me up!!

O.K,………. let’s put the “Elways looking old”, to bed. He is old, like me, and I made him scramble around so much it’s aged him….O.K. somebody has to take the credit!! :o )

Sproiles…….you take him if you COULD get him. nothing more needs to be said.

ROBBED, yes Broncomania has been robbed again and more than once in the past, as Shannon should be in period and I agree that owners should have a separate place in the HOF.

Heard about Casey Wiegmann on the radio…GREAT NEWS for us!!

GM??? I’m lost on that one too…not sure but, we’ll see. Maybe Mr. Bolen stays more involved, somewhat like Jerry Jones??…his team.

imready, where you catching the walleye? They could be the best eating freshwater fish that swims. I may try Gray Reef with my boys if the weather keeps holding.

You know what’s funny you guys/gals are already drafting from the college ranks and it’s February….I’ll learn something from you all because I typically wait up until a few weeks prior to the draft, before I start paying attention.

I’m still upset about the HOF.

    Coop

  46. 15themarshall15 says:

love to see Emanuel cook and chung i think hamlin may be best safety in college i would love to see any of em. im glad you guys like my link lol/
i like usc’s dt in 2nd and mauluaga in first

  47. monodono says:

I think there will be better Safeties in next years draft and The Broncos could use a little Vet help.
Patrick Chung is a good SS but Barrett played well as a rookie and should get better. Delmas on the other hand is a FS, food for thought.
I would rather sign a FA Safety and draft a Safety next year, do you like Curry?

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  48. [...] Mark Cooper » Blog Archive » My Pick: Steelers 17-14 over the Cards [...]

  49. 15themarshall15 says:

i love curry and i think he is the best defensive player in the draft. I wish we would move up and get him but it wont happen i hope we do spend some money and get a solid defensive linemen, i mean get peppers or haynesworth. At least one big name or i will be dissappointed. we want a championship and we are switching defensive schemes we need to draft a player like curry to buiild around or a young free agent like, help at safety in free agency. oj atogwe 4th or 5th year player thats a major improvement at safety and i agree barrett has potential but he needs to come off the bench next year and learn from a veteran safety and atogwe can be that guy or start him next to him till next year and draft taylor mays like we should of had he come out this year.
man i am so excited though we have a long time to wait. anyone like baseball thats getting close haha. i know its not the same but at least its not 5 channels of college basketball. one channel is fine unless its football i wish it was on 5 or 6 channels
