Inconsistency in Houston

December 14th, 2007 - 9:41am by mark_cooper

I guess on one hand I was a little surprised by the game and on the other hand, I wasn’t.

You all know as well as I do that consistent football is typically played by more experienced teams. We’re not an experienced team and we have a bunch of new faces and young guys. I guess I was hopeful that they could build on the prior week’s game and get in a groove. But let’s face it, we’re a young team.

I’m optimistic and a fan so I’m always pulling for the fellas. “Reality is what it is.” I know you’re thinking. “Coop is a master of the obvious,” right?  Some will say that being young is just an excuse. Some will say they’re tired of hearing it. We’re young and we simply got out-played.

It’s 9:15 a.m. and I’m at my office like many of you. I dropped one of my little guys at school and came in, got caught up on e-mails and wanted to post this blog before looking at the paper. You folks didn’t know I was clairvoyant, did you. I haven’t read the paper this morning and I already know what it’s going to say. I wanted to post this and then see if I’m right.

The press will call for everyone’s job, saying they should fire this guy and that guy to get people’s attention (to sell newspapers).

Bad loss…I was at the game and very disappointed but I always stick with my team….I got to meet Stokley before the game…Nice guy….

I still believe in the Broncos…hey if SD loses its last 3 and we win out, we win the division!!!
    there is always hope….

  2. denverfaninks says:

I was disappointed too! but I still love you guys.. I think there were some
pass interference calls that should have been called on Houston a couple
of times but it is what it is… I think you need a different defensive coach
the bates system doesn’t work. Don’t read the papers in denver everyone
is a monday morning quarterback I learned that a long time ago when I lived in Denver.
Good luck on X mas eve against the bolt heads
    Merry Christmas from Kansas
    Fan in Kansas for ever!!
    All ready!!!!!!

  3. re.form 71 says:

ya…that was a really disappointing loss. i love the broncos…and we should have owned the texans. dunno if it’s cuz we were coming off of a short week…or to coop’s point….we are young and just got out played. we couldn’t protect cutler and there was some questionable play calls and clock management on our part at times. regardless, with that loss….our season seems like it’s pretty much over. makes me sad. looking forward the xmas eve game tho.

    go broncos!

fan 4 life here in toronto canada.

  4. KiKo J.E. #7 says:

All I can say is that I am very disapointed. I wait all year for broncos football. I check on the draft, free agents and trades. I buy all the gear and tickets to see a game or two. And this is the crap me and rest of broncos country get to watch. Bad coaching, inexperience, bad player personal oh yeah NO HEART! This is NOT BRONCOS FOOTBALL! I will ALWAYS BLEED ORANGE AND BLUE. BUT COME ON GUYS! FROM OWNERSHIP ON DOWN LET’S GET IT TOGETHER! OH CAN WE AS FANS STOP SELLING OUR TICKETS TO THE OPPOSING FANS! WHERE THE HELL DID THE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE GO?

  5. broncsfaninaz says:

I think Coop makes a good point…it was a tough loss to see and we are young, but i think we still have to stay positive and hope to make the playoffs. If we dont make the playoffs it will be dissapointing, but im sure we can all agree that there have been some glipses of a very good team this season. Im sure from the spectacular performances we’ve seen, we can try to carry that over into next season when everyone is healthy and on the field. Im going to try and stay positive (like everyone else) and hope that we can hand san diego a loss worse than what they did to us on xmas day…. GO BRONCOS!

  6. shelbo bronco says:

we are young but we know that alredy and so do the coaches. we are hit by the injury bug but we know that can happen to anyone at anytime. what we can do is do what we do best…pound the freakin rock and we didnt do that enough last night. we need a stud middle linebacker a saftey like atwater and another badass defensive tackle to help out thomas. thats what i think but im still gonna cheer my heart out. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. RNST says:

    GREAT JOB MIKE IN HOUSTON
    FIRE BATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. KiKo J.E. #7 says:

I don’t think Jim Bates will get fired but it wouldn’t bother me if he did get fired. He hand picked his D-line and gave up on them and his scheme. Defensive guru? What a joke! He’s no better than Larry Coyer.

  9. imready says:

as a bronco fan for 35 years, the denver broncos provide us with a winning record more often and not, especially during the shanahan era. a season like this has to happen once in a while, no team escapes mediocre football. you still have to be optomistic about this group, they sure have some talent and will be great to watch for years to come. some higher draft picks are something to look forward and as good as the bronco talent evaluators are next year the bronco’s should be a force to be reckoned with. i hoping they will be more selective with free agent pickups and sign more undrafted free agents. stay away from free agents with a injury history and the “over the hill” high salairy free agents that are lucky to play half the season. i would dump all those kind of players on the current roster. injuries plague every team but injury prone players are like a plague to a team, especially at key positions.
looking forward to the san diego game. i think we will see a fired up bronco squad take it to them. go broncos!

  10. Fan_since_'75 says:

Let’s face it guys, we’re not going to go to the playoffs, so don’t kid yourself with this positive nonsense. San Diego killed us in Denver, so don’t expect a miracle. We need to focus on rebuilding for next year. Cutler & Marshall look very promising, but we need a stronger running game & defense. Special Teams is a joke, Houston started most drives near our 50. Who can’t win when you’re starting with only 1/2 field to score. Shake things up and start from scratch: Dallas did it and now look at them.

  11. broncoryan says:

Fan Since 75 is right on. Although I will always be there for my broncos….better luck next year. We can’t stop the run, stopping the offense to convert on 3rd down is a joke and has been for some time, not just this season. You look at the broncos on paper and it is very exciting. Give the off season a couple nice acquisitions and all the players a time to get fresh and I think we will be a strong force once again in the AFC. The playoffs are not what they should be without the Broncos present. And I will hold firm to the belief that they will be there next season. And by the way….Jim Bates needs to go bye bye……..about five minutes after the Vikings game.

    GO BRONCOS!

  12. GO CUTLER says:

I THINK OUR PROBLEM LAST NIGHT WAS OUR OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING WHY CANT WE RUN THE OPTION IT GETS CUTLER THE OPTION TO MAKE THROWS DOWNFIELD BY BRINGING THE SAFETY UP TO DEFEND THE OPTION. THAT RUN AROUND LEFT END BY CUTLER AT THE 25 YD LINE LAST NIGHT WAS SILLY HE NEEDS AN OPTION OR JUST RUN OUT OF BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST TIME ALL YEAR JAY FORCED THROWS ALL NIGHT WE NOT ONE TIME THREW A SCREEN WITH ALL THE PRESSURE THEY WAS PUTTING ON JAY YOU HAVE TO THROW SCREENS INSTEAD OF THROWING 25 YARDS DOWNFIELD. OUR BEST DEFENSE THIS YEAR IS OUR OFFENSE LETS PLAY SMART OFFENSIVE FOOTBALL. LETS BEAT THE CHARGERS!!1

  13. 2champ4 says:

Bates needs to go. This defense has talent and should not be ing playing this poorly. We still need to draft a DT though. Glen dorsey will probably be drafted too high but we might have a chance at sedrick ellis.

  14. lancane says:

I feel sorry for die-hard fans and for the organization. We have a young team which looks to be one day a contender on many levels, but we are impatient. I loved 80′s football, one year you do great another you sank, but fans stayed true and it was fun…the whole legacy mumbo-jumbo and dynasty crap has ruined the game, no one wants dynasties besides the rich owners, I prefer a team in contention but is lax a year here or their, it makes for better football then this New England hoot-wallop! It is a game and time makes you better, if all fans want is a full out championship win, then maybe they those should convert to the NE fanbase and leave true fans alone…I will stick with my 6-8 Broncos and I will see those fans back in a year or two when we are favored to win it all~!

  15. broncos9697 says:

I agree with the rest of the bronco fans are season is over…*I bleed orange and blue also and will never give up on the broncos’s but there need to be a lot done over the off-season….I know and so sould the rest of you bates will be with the broncos next season I wish he was not but he will be….We need to pick up a great running back travis is fine back there but we need someonr that we know will get 80+ yards every outing….WR we need to see who stays with us and retires big names that pop in my head are troy brown, patrick crayton,dj hackett, eric moulds, david patton, and jerry porter………….our def..we need to go after 2-3 de..or dt…s.team’s we need help………….

  16. misteznprince says:

wow i was shocked that we got dominated in the 4th quarter the way we did……i dont see us beating SD but if we win our last game against the Vikings we may just reastablish the Mile High Magic that we seemed to hav lost after Big Ben and Manning and Rivers beat us there. i see good things in the future they let Champ play man and he would have had a pick is Sage had thrown a better pass….i am really looking foreward to next year if we can get some D-linemen and a saftey if John goes but our most urgent need now is for either a middle or a Strong-side LB i trust Shanahan in the draft

  17. ramboskithefan says:

I also agree it was a horrible loss! Kubiak and Kyle really showed Mike how our system is really suppose so be ran…I want Mike to stay for as long as he wants i just wish we could have kept Kub to coach after mike was done. who else but elway knows the broncos as much as Kubiak…it didn’t surprise me that we got worked…question why is Bly still on our team, or at least starting cuz he consistently gets burned…if Houston would have went deep with Johnson every down they would have one that match up 9-10 times…we couldn’t even put champ on Johnson early cuz we were worried about Davis killing bly…he is a touch faster then Andre but still i say keep Champ on Johnson all game…oh well better luck next year for us…hope we draft Dorsey, or Graves on D and pick up experienced O line this year in free agency!!! lets hope

  18. shelbo bronco says:

champ has got burned WAY more than bly this season and last night

  19. Broncosrock07 says:

It seems like the broncos are not like there are used to be, fire Shanahan and put in Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan’s days with Denver are over, and Cutler is just like John Elway, Cutler doesnt have a supporting cast around him, or sign Marty Shottenheimer in the regular season, and move mike to the offensive coordinator and when the playoffs come, or if they come put Shanahan in because shanahan can win in the postseason

  20. Broncosrock07 says:

  21. emaldo says:

Alright, people were in a situation we rarely find ourselves in as Bronco fans….but come on we got youngsters playin hard and we have a lot to look forward to….the young O-line is playing better than most veteran lines….Cutler is the truth and our running game will pick up thats guaranteed….our D-line is gonna get better, any analyst can tell you it takes 2-3 seasons for a D-line man to become consistant….the D-line is hands down the hardest position to draft and I think we have nailed us down some good ones….DJ Williams is leading the team in tackles and manning the middle like a champ so where has he lacked at? Our DB situation is based on scheme, a new one at that….give it some time….we gone be back doin what we do best winning….Shanny and the rest of the team has given us a bunch of good seasons to bragg about and be proud about….lets not give up on them now. 8-8 is still an okay season especially with all of the injuries to key leaders on the team.
a real loyal Denver fan, BossHawg Kalifornia aka The Talent.

  22. clutch734 says:

I was just as disappointed as everyonhe here last night. I was actually at the game but the DIE HARD fan in me just doesn’t let me give up until we have that mark by our name that says we are mathmatically eliminated. Until then, I won’t give up hope!!

If SD loses to DET, DEN, Oak and we win our last 2…we win the division!!!!
it sounds improbably for SD to lose 3 in a row…but I don’t know if its more improbable that we win our last 2…..

either way, we still have a shot…so everybody that still has it left in them, cheer on those Lions this weekend!!!
at least if SD loses, Den will play at SD with somehting on the line….

No matter what, I still stick with my team…
    Go Broncos!!

  23. caballo says:

It has been hard on many of us watching the broncos play this year. Inconsistent play along with inexperience and injuries has taken its toll. We as fans can only hope that next year will be brighter and more enjoyable. Hang in their fans, the broncos organization is still one of the best in the NFL. Committed coaches and staff will eventually bring out the best in the players.
Live, Love, and be a bronco fan!

  24. Dekreybroncofan says:

So as thin as it is our only chance is to get into the playoffs we need the Chargers to get swept, and we sweep the rest of the way… Although this year is not over it dose not mean the same anymore. I do not believe we have the right to be in the playoffs even if we make it. Its Jay’s team now and we are going to need someone to replace Mr. Lynch in the draft. Even if god willing Lynch comes back one more year we should plan on replacing him with a high profile safety from this years draft so he can learn behind one of the greatest to put on a Bronco Uni… I know that people are all about D.J. Playing Middle Linebacker, but I think we could get someone in there that’s more natural at the position. I mean Imagine how much D.J. could do on the outside after having to play on the inside for a year… He has learned a lot this season. I think Our D-line is going to be great with Jarvis and Elvis holding down the ends I think we have a D line that can really pressure QB’s in the future I just hope that Jarvis has been doing his homework and learning from Elvis… Our receiving core is great; our RB’s are elite when used the right way and healthy. Man speaking of used the right way why didn’t we pound Travis some more at the beginning of the second half? Our QB is making a case to be a multi pro bowl contender… I am not sure about our O line, but it seems like the scheme’s work with just about anyone plugged in there. I think our LB core isn’t good enough for our defense, but are always put in places were they can make a play… With all of our safeties and corners we are a cover defense with a lot of speed and we need a LB core that can knock the wind out of runners not ever getting ran over… Well enough of this aimless venting I just have so many possibilities going through my head right now when it comes to personnel.

  25. danso says:

I thought our intensity level was pathetic. Missed tackles happened way too much for the 14th game of the season. Some of the guys looked like they were going through the motions but not making the intense effort it takes to play at this level. With the kind of talent we have, and the number of injuries they have, how in the h… can we give up 31 points and only score 13. Yeah we’re young, yeah we had a short week and blah, blah, blah…….. but they can say the same thing. Difference was they were prepared and wanted to win. Now I love the Broncos like we all do and felt so let down last night and have high hopes for the future but some how these guys have got to get motivated and get a defensive scheme that works. I guess consolation prize is higher draft picks and a better year next year. Come on Broncos make a statement the last two games!

  26. wanagi says:

man..that hurt..o’well..I can’t wait to see what shanny does this off season…hamza #21…is not a saftey..he missed like 8 tackles last night..he is tryin to hard to be a hammer…instead of just wrappin up and tackling….he don’t have th eexperience ..and he’s no John lynch either….our O-line sucks big…we took ben, cooper, and of course Our leader of the line, our center…for granted…thats why our running game sucks…the o-line is much to inexperience..they don’t have the zone blockin down yet……

  27. Broncoslove says:

So i am the biggest bronco fan in the world i am 14 and i live off football my grandapa taught me every thing i know!!!!!
in 2005 my grandpa died and i alwys like to think that they didn’t go 13-3 for no reason any way i know a lot about the broncos and John Elway i have this relly amazing orange jesy of his that is pretty kool!!!!!

  28. Broncoslove says:

even though we hve had a rugh season we have nothing to be ashamed of “sportsmanship” hold your head up high broncos for EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS AND FOR EVER

  30. doctorising says:

I can agree to some extent with the “young team” remark. However, I was always under the impression that that’s what the team has coaches for: to teach the young and more inexperienced guys how to be prepared to succeed in the NFL. After all, look at New England. As much as I dislike them, they have demonstrated that they can take just about anybody and turn them into viable competitors.
This segues into my other complaint that will agree with Coop’s second point: coaching. I think Shanahan has made some questionable hires in the last few years as it comes to coaches. The offensive play calling has been disgraceful at times. Defensively, I don’t know that Jim Bates is a horrible defensive coach, but he is a very particular coach. He’s the type that needs to walk in to a ready-made situation that will work for his particular scheme–which Denver was not. Just look at the musical-rosters we played with the defensive line (and still will be in the offseason, watch). And our LB’s were in the top 3 of LB corps last year. This year, they look like they’re lost and out of position constantly. Our shutdown CB’s can’t be shutdown corners if they’re constantly having to worry about supporting the run every play. Again, our safeties weren’t that bad last year, but in Bates’ scheme they were exposed badly in their greatest weakness: pass coverage–I think because Bates requires the safeties to be able to cover WR’s & TE’s one-on-one. In short, it just seemed that our personnel–as good as they were last year–was all wrong for his scheme. I think Shanahan’s desire to find the “steal” finally caught up to him. I can’t imagine what kind of overhaul is going to take place in the offseason to get the “correct” players to play the D he envisions. It’s a lot like Fantasy Football: “If I could just get that guy and that guy and that guy, then I’ll really be good!!!” This could really come back to put Shanahan’s job in jeopardy.

  31. Myke J0 says:

Fire Shanahan? Hire marty ball? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Most of you guys are really REALLY lame. Who really thought we were going to be anything but just average this year? So many new faces, new tailback, guard, tight end, receivers, very young QB, whole new D-line, strong side linebacker, DJ (who is a beast by the way, anyone who thinks different just knows nothing about football) first year playing in the middle and a brand new defensive system under coach Bates. Also, what about the injuries to Tom Nalen, Ben Hamilton and Javon Walker? My suggestion would be, when watching a broncos game, stop looking at the ball, start watching our players, our line-ups, you will see a team that does not know eachother well yet and needs a season or two to gel.

  32. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

You’re exactly right, Coop. The bitter reality is young teams have a hard time learning how to win. Nevertheless, I think the Broncs have taken their lumps and next season, we’re really going to take off. We have impressive wins against the Steelers and Titans, both of these teams should be in the playoffs and are solid. If Javon Walker comes back healthy next season this is a dangerous team. Let’s be faithful Broncos fans because next season is going to be so much better.

  33. panzerzug says:

I am fairly sure that the Broncos have only won one playoff game since Elway retired. I do not believe that Shanahan has any idea about how to draft talent or pick up quality free aagents. I think it is time that Mike is relieved of some of his duties and just coaches or hits the road. Do you remember a guy by the name of Dan Reeves? Sometimes a coach is just in one place too long and his message does not get across any longer, and it is time to get a new face in there with a different approach. I predicted an 8-8 season and that is not looking so hot right now. I have been watching the Broncos since the mid 70′s and we have had some poor teams, but at least they were competative and were fun to watch. This team seems to have no clue and only a few players seem to have any heart. I do see some good young tatlent and with the proper coaching maybe we can turn it around quickly so we can enjoy some good old fashion Broncos football.

  34. 20BroncoFan4life says:

HEY GUYS… IT’S SAD TO SAY THAT WE HAD A LOSING SEASON

    THE REASONS OUR OBVIOUS:
    1) INCONSITENCY IN THE PLAYERS
    2) BAD DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS COACHING
    3) 2ND STRING OFFENSIVE LINE
    4) BEAT UP DEFENSIVE LINE

IF WE ADRESS THESE PROBLEMS IN THE OFFSEASON I SEE NO REASON WHY WE CAN’T BE PLAYOFF CONTENDERS NEXT YEAR

  35. 20BroncoFan4life says:

I’M STILL GOING TO WATCH THE REMAINDER OF THE GAME
I LOVE WATCHING CUTLER GET BETTER AS HE PROGRESSES

  36. oldsouthstander says:

Why aren’t the Broncos a playoff contender? Compare the 2007 game one starters vs current 2008 starters.
    Offense:
Matt Lepsis is the only 2007 O starter starting today and he has more experience than the rest of the starters combined!
Defense: There are only four starters from 2007 and one of them is playing a new position. Bailey and Lynch have been dinged up all year.
Special team: BLLLEEEHHHHH!!!!! Get rid of Saurebraun. The only thing he’s consistant at is out kicking the coverage. Kick off distance is not even average.
The reality is that we have a good batch of very young players who need time to get coordinated and work as a team. I look at the 2007 season as one long 2008 preseason with the new guard getting the gametime experience they need.
At worst, we’ll have the number 17 pick if all stays ther same. This should give us a good shot at an excellent number one draft pick.
    What about free agents?
We tried to sign two of the best D linemen available last year but it didn’t happen. Let’ hope for better results in 2008 free agent market. A top notch linerbacker would be nice also, but, the better your D line, the better the remaining defense looks as they don’t have to cover for the D lines mstakes.
    Offensive needs:
    1) A real fullback that is a crushing blocker, not the hybrids we’ve got now.
    2) A decision as to whether we cut Walker or Rod Smith. Walker has a $7.5 million bonus due and what’s the real status of his knee. Rod is what it means to be a Bronco, but, the operation he went through was a temporary substitute for a hip replacemernt. Does he have 1 or 2 more years left in him? If he does it’s as a number three wide reciever at best. Not an easy decision for anyone to make.
As bad as it is now, the future looks bright. If you saw the graphic they put up during the Houston game, the Broncos 2006 draft was exceptional. Only lack of experience is holding them back.
I’m looking forward to an exciting 2008 season!!!!

  37. oneeye27 says:

Am I the only one who thinks the two best corners in the league have just
stunk! I understand that champ has been hurt, but Mr. Bly has just been burnt every time I wach him. There is no leader on this team! I know it
is easier to type these words than play the game, but that is why these
players are paid so much (PERFORMANCE) there has been no play with heart. I will always be true Blue and Orange, but would like to see a team
grow and mature, and have fun playing the game.

  38. mark_cooper says:

38 responses. You all are on fire. The papers weren’t as hard on the team as I thought they would be. If you read the paper today, John Lynch didn’t even realize they were out of the Playoff picture until he showed up for practice on Monday.

That goes back to the comment I made about players having a different mind-set about taking it one game at a time and being focused on what they have to do that week. It didn’t surprise me, because the Playoff race is “chatter” when you have to win to keep going.

Tough year, but not really when you look at the injuries and I think they’ve had 13 D-lineman come off the roster since training camp. Some were brought back. I read that other day as I knew there was a lot of turn over but not to that extent. I’m not sure you win at ANY level with that kind of turnover, so it put the defensive performance in perspective.

Hey, by the way, let’s take it easy on our little guy, broncosLove who is 14 and I appreciate his feedback like I do everyone else’s. I have a 13 year old and he’s far from a perfect speller either. Keep at it broncosLove!! A fan’s a fan, regardless of their spelling ability!!

I think we’ll see some changes after the season but I’m just telling you, I’m comfortable with the nucleus of this team. A few adjustments and a couple of players and we’ll be back in the hunt.

O.K. Monday Night Football, let’s go take out some frustrations on the Bolt’s. What do you say??

  39. AZbronco20 says:

Thanks for calling out firstfan Coop. I would hate to be his kid. Stay strong broncosLove. A true Bronco fan is like wine….gets better with age! As for the team? Stick it to the Chargers and ‘Vikes, have a great off-season, and be next years Patriots (remember when they were our B*tches?). Bleeding Orange and Blue forever!

  40. broncquistador says:

Even though the Broncos didn’t make it to the playoff, it is really cool to see how this “Young team” matures a long the way and the future seasons to come. So, those who are really true fans will say when the Broncos go to the SuperBowl: “Hey, I remember you as a Rookie. I was there for you and I now I will get to see you win what you deserve”…

  41. mark_cooper says:

Big game Monday Night, so let’s see if we can de-rail the Bolts and chat after the game. Have a great weekend and Merry Christmas to everyone and go Broncos. We’ll chat next week!!!
