Graham, Bannan and Jamal Williams. What’s your take?

March 4th, 2011 - 6:22pm by mark_cooper

Not new but wanted to sit a day or so to think through these and see who else might get let go with Bonus money coming up.. Understand the finance aspects and have seen the Broncos looking at the TE from Notre Dame. But really was curios on your take on these?? Any thoughts.

Also, love the extension for negotiations…hopefully they get something done so our guys get to work together under Coach Fox as much as possible this off-season. Need every day we can get.

  1. Mikeyb1203 says:

Also CB’s are a dime a dozen quality DT’s are priceless.

  2. strandoftds says:

    IS IT APRIL YET?!

  3. sndvl says:

No CBA is really hurting us. Even if we missed on Paea (assuming we took PP) there is still quality DT. Austin from UNC, Nevis LSU, Taylor from Baylor and Liuget ILL would most likely be available.
Now if there were a CBA and we could trade Orton for a 2nd or 3rd, then we could put a deal together and get the two P’s.
Unless they go Dareus or Fairley! Then who knows!

  4. strandoftds says:

With a new CBA, if we can trade Orton for a 2nd round pick that would be ideal. three 2nd rounders would be alot of ammunition. TE, S, and ILB. Thats if we use our 2nd overall pick on a DT. Thats how I`d go anyway.

  5. Mikeyb1203 says:

Thanks strand. I’m glad I’m not the only DT man left. And all of those DT’s you listed sndvl are good but not great, they were mediocre in college what will they become in the NFL? We don’t need to good CB’s only to have McFadden, Charles or Matthews have a 180 yard game on us, just so we can say oh but we did hold one of the leagues best passers to under 200 yards if we do that. We would be in the same boat as last year maybe even worst. Man for how many times we had teams run for over 200 yards on us you would think everyone would want to address that first?

  6. Mikeyb1203 says:

I want to stop the run and make the QB put it up, statistically a better chance at a turn over that way.

  7. sndvl says:

It’s a double edge sword- how many times do we have to watch Peyton or Rivers or even Roth torch our secondary cause of the inability to cover 2nd 3rd and 4th reads? I feel confident Doom and Ayers can provide the pass rush in our new 4-3.
The problem is we have so many holes on D outside Champ and Dumervil and DJ (that’s rececently debatable). I for one don’t want the second draft pick EVER again. Since we do have it, make it count. To me, Peterson fits that mold. Dual threat CB/KR.
Trust me, if we go Dareus/Fairley I won’t be disappointed. I just think Peterson is that much better now! And that’s what this D needs. Someone to play NOW!

  8. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Exactly what sndvl just said Mikey. Believe me, I wasnt always in the Peterson camp but it makes sense to me. No one will deny that your point of view isnt valid, I am tired of being run over too and understand the risk that paea may not be there come second round but there are others like sndvl states. Its a double edge sword like he says. I just think Peterson is the best talent in the draft and at such a high spot we should take the best. Theres always next year, cant fill all our holes in one year. If there was a Suh this year, ok but none of them compare to suh, maybe mccoy, but not suh. Gerald McCoy aint bad but he is no suh. And like Sndvl says, believe me, i wont be disappointed if we go DT, Peterson just makes more sense to me. If we get a second round DT this year, we can get a first round DT next year and who knows the crop may be better.

  9. sndvl says:

TRB, you sure we ain’t related????

  10. sndvl says:

I think the only thing we’ve ever disagreed on was McD. ;)

  11. broncosfreak30 says:

    Sndvl…

I hear you man! Having the #2 overall pick in the draft is really rare and this is the ONLY time that we have had this pick!! We need to draft the safest player in the draft and someone that has the best chance to be a pro bowl/hof player!!!

Just like Elway has said NUMEROUS times, “We can not afford to miss in this draft”

Just like Sndvl said…I know that we need DL help really bad but with our 2nd round picks, we can easily get A LOT of DL help in the 2nd and 3rd round!!

Especially if there is a new CBA and we get a 2nd or 3rd for Orton!!

If that happens then we for sure need to draft Peterson and then grab 2 DL in the 2nd along with a LB, preferably Wilson! I think that everyone would be okay with that!!

Also, if they hurry up and get a new CBA done, then we can have a FA and get players in here like Williams and Johnson!! We desperately need a FA and new CBA extremely bad!!

And with the number 2 pick in the NFL 2011 draft, the broncos select Patrick Peterson!!

    :)

  12. broncosfreak30 says:

Also guys, if y’all caught my point that I made in another blog recently…

I said that the Lions were in the exact same position! They needed OL extremely bad for Stafford and what did they do with the #2 pick? They picked Suh because he was the safest and best defensive player available!

The Rams picked the best offensive player in Bradford (debatable) and they took Suh!!

We need to follow right behind them!

Peterson is a Suh type of player, probably even better! In the end, you will get more production and turnovers out of Peterson than you will any of the other players in this whole draft and WE HAVE A CHANCE TO PICK HIM!!!!

Please don’t be stupid!! Draft Peterson and then draft us a STRONG front 7 with the rest of the picks along with a FB, hopefully guy from Stanford!!

  13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol im pretty sure we aint related but the resemblance is uncanny lol.

  14. sndvl says:

Freak…we shall see about Bradford. His new OC can be pretty demanding!!!!!!!!!!!! And that’s being nice.

I wonder about all those out there who are adamant about DT at 2, will they be disappointed if we take Peterson? I (among others) am pretty happy that we’re in position to get him or a solid DT!

  15. strandoftds says:

Broncosfreak30, A few days ago the Panthers placed tenders on both Charles Johnson and Deangelo Williams. So now if we went after those two players we will lose some 2011 draft picks. Not sure what type of tenders they both have but it would cost us alot. Big bummer I think.

  16. strandoftds says:

It wouldn`t break my heart if we drafted Patrick Peterson. He`s very gifted. I just think Dareus would be a better situation for the Bronco`s. We signed Champ. I`m also confident that our young CB we drafted last year can get the job done.

  17. strandoftds says:

I meant our young CB`s can get the job done.

  18. strandoftds says:

If we signed d. Williams he would cost us our 1st round pick. C. Johnson would cost us a 3rd. There goe`s that idea.

  19. strandoftds says:

On Monday which is March 7th is Parrish Cox`s court date. We just might find out more of whats going on. Or it could get pushed back a few more months. I for one am curious to know whats going to happen with him. Did he really commit a crime or is the victim just wanting something. Know what I mean.

  20. strandoftds says:

If Cox did commit a crime he should pay the price. We`ll find out soon enough.

  21. Yovi21 says:

Mikey, IDK how you think CBs are a dime a dozen, aside from Revis, Bailey, and Asamoagh (or however you spell it) I can’t think of any CBs that have been dominant consistently…while DTs arn’t as common, players like Patrick Peterson are insanely rare! I hope we don’t pass up on his talent!

  22. Mikeyb1203 says:

I say that because the teams that have won superbowls don’t have big name CB’s besides Woodson that is older than Champ (I think) and not dominate anymore.

  23. Mikeyb1203 says:

Detroit my have taken Suh and it benefited them but he is on the line and in on most of the plays. Also look what happened to Stafford this year, he got demolished kinda symbolic of our run D for next year if we don’t draft some top notch DT’s

  24. Yovi21 says:

Yea, but who other than Suh have you seen in the last 10 years that has made an impact like that on their D? I will not argue that we need help, but with the depth this draft has at DT I don’t think it would be wise to jump on one with the 2nd overall pick. if we go after a DT then lets trade back and get one between the 5-15 picks and gain a few picks in the mean time…I just have a gut feeling that if we don’t take Peterson we will be kicking ourselves for the next 10 years.

Also, despite what I want to believe as a fan, the Broncos are at least a year from being honest playoff contenders and 2-4 years from being a dominant franchise..so what does this mean? We shouldn’t try to fix the whole team with this draft! With the second overall pick in the draft you don’t pick the best player at the position you would like to fill, You pick the BEST overall player…and that is Patrick Peterson.

I won’t argue that we need a line, but Doom and Ayers should be able to supply good pressure this year and I just don’t see a game changing DT in this draft that deserves the 2nd overall pick.

  25. Crazyhorserider says:

With so many un-drafted players making it big I do wonder about the assessment of draft picks who may never make it. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES. However we should be able to get three very good defensive players in our first 3 picks and to me it is all about building a defence this year. Our first pick should be for the best defensive player available, but who is it?

  26. mex bronco says:

yovi21 is right DT is the deepest position in this draft, and we have two high second rounders plus a third rounder, and if we trade orton we could have three second rounders. so we easily draft two DT there. also we don’t have to be a playoff contender this year we just need to improve. but also we have to get a saftey in the 2 round

  27. henryac says:

I made a bad post yesterday about seeing Dareus at the Senior Bowl. He wasn’t there . I had to go back and look at the pictures to find out it was Neilo from WV and Reed from Arizona that I was watching. Both of them did an outstanding job playing positions they don’t normally play. Devine from WV was amazing to watch, much like McCluster last year. I watched Dareus and Fairly throughout the regular season, (I live in AL so I had no choice!), and the bowl games.

  28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I for one would happily pay a 3rd round pick for Charles Johnson … IF we needed a DE that is. He was drafted in the 3rd round but has played like a 2nd rounder or better. currently 26 if i remember correctly. DeAngelo williams on the other hand, isnt worth a 1st round in my book, older, and injury prone to an extent. Dont need a RB that bad. They also have a good FA LB but they prolly tendered him as well. He is like 27. His name escapes me.

    henryac,
Yea Divine is definitely a McCluster kinda guy. McCluster brought a spark to the chiefs. Speed aint everything but its a speed league. Not saying we should get him, just things to think off. Raiders suck, only reason they win the few games they win, is with speed (and some talent) but speed. McCluster ran the ball, caught the ball and returned the ball as well. Did it all. He prolly didnt have a position on the depth chart, prolly just put specialist next to his name lol. Moreno has gotten into open field before but he doesnt have CJ, McFadden, Jcharles, McCluster, etc speed.

Go Team Peterson. Go Broncos. TRB out… :-)

  29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

According to two league sources spoken to by the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are “not sold” on drafting a defensive lineman with the No. 1 pick in the draft.
They are reportedly concerned about the health of many of the draft’s top defensive lineman, and are set to take “long looks” at both Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert. Observer writer Joseph Person speculates they may even consider LSU CB Patrick Peterson. Although the Panthers have a huge need along their defensive line, they are most concerned with landing an impact player. Newton, Gabbert and Peterson would all fit that bill if Carolina decides there’s no lineman worth taking first overall.

  30. Mikeyb1203 says:

I came up with a list of DLmen that made a difference for their team with the first round pick.

    Haloti Ngata- 12th overall 2006
    Tamba Hali- 20th overall 2006
    Dwight Freeney- 11th overall 2002
    Richard Seymore- 6th overall 2001
    Ndamukong Suh- 2nd overall 2010
    Gerald McCoy- 3rd overall 2010
    B.J. Raji- 9th overall 2009
    Glenn Dorsey- 5th overall 2008

Now name me some CB’s that made a difference as a first round draft pick.

  31. Mikeyb1203 says:

That just a few I can name more if you would like?

  32. Mikeyb1203 says:

Well in that case I hope they take Peterson 1st overall so their is no argument on who we should get and we could also see what comes of drafting a CB as an “impact” player.

  33. potter381 says:

Mikey only three of those d’linemen were top 5 picks. And the effect they had their rookie years debatable Glenn Dorsey especially isn’t a world beater and gerald mckoy was just solid not great. So that brings us back to Suh the only top five dt pick on your list that provided a complete facelift to his teams defense. And thats what you want from the #2 pick in the draft an absolute every player that adds an immediate spark. There are plenty Of solid DT’s to be had in this draft. Marvin Austin would be a great 2nd round pick. He was actually the top rated dt going into the past college season and only dropped because of his suspension.

  34. Mikeyb1203 says:

So you want a CB that is only in on plays that go to his side of the field if he isn’t run off by the wide receiver on a run play?

  35. Yovi21 says:

Mikey, you just contradicted yourself…in your earlier post you said CBs are a dime a dozen and now your naming off big lists of D linemen….well I can’t name off tons of CBs that were drafted early because there haven’t been many in the last few years, Joe Haden was taken 7th I believe, but thats the only one in the last 4 years….This is why Peterson is a huge deal! There hasn’t been talk of a CB this good in almost 30 years (the last time a CB went 2nd overall) Peterson is THE BEST player in the draft. Period. like I said in an earlier post; with the second overall pick you don’t take the best player at the position you have to fill, you take the best overall player.

  36. sndvl says:

Freeny and Seymour are ends. So they can’t be included on your list. Since the debate is DT vs PP. Hali and Dorsey have not proved great or solid. Average at best! McCoy and Ngata are solid and on the verge. That leaves Suh and Raji. Obviously Suh is a man beast. Raji anchored that 3-4 championship team. Surround yourself with a GREAT coordinator and All-Pro talent in Woodson and Matthews, with a stout supporting cast and wha-laa!!!!

  37. Mikeyb1203 says:

I am trying to say DT’s are more important than CB’s. Darrell Revis, Champ Bailey, Nmandi Asomugh all have never won Superbowls.

  38. Mikeyb1203 says:

My argument was DL (something that we lack) is more important than CB. Hali has been in the top ten sack leader the past couple of years and Dorsey anchored one of the best run defenses in the league. My point is that if we build up front first we are more likely to win.

  39. Mikeyb1203 says:

Think about how successful teams where with Warren Sapp? How he impacted teams did Champ and Nmandi have that same impact?

  40. sndvl says:

    Cornerbacks-
    2010-
    Joe Haden 7 Browns
    Devin McCourty Pats-Pro Bowl

    2008-
    Rodgers Cromartire 16 Cardinals
    Kenny Phillips 31 Giants

    2007-
    Revis Island 14 Jets
    Meriweather 24 Pats

    2006-
    Donte Whitner 8 Bills
    Antonio Cromartie 19 Chargers

    2005-
    Pacman 6 Titans
    Antel Rolle 8 Cardinals

    And just for fun 2004
    DeAngelo Hall 8 Falcons
    Duanta Robinson 10 Texans
    Chris Gamble 28 Panthers

  41. Yovi21 says:

You seem to believe that the only way you can win a superbowl is by having a good DT, and I’ll agree that it makes a difference, but a good secondary is just as important as a good line. Tramon Williams made just as much an impact (if not more) than BJ Raji through the packers playoff run…I just don’t see the logic in taking a DT in the first when there are plenty in the second round that I believe will be able to make just as much an impact as Fairley or Dareus…you just don’t see talent like Peterson every year….and I feel that there is a Fairley/Dareus in every draft.

  42. socalbigbroncofan says:

i have read everybodys opinion and dont really know who to take. to be honest just excited to have the #2 draft pick. but if i had to pick. i think the best player, cleanest player, and safest player is Peterson. The way i see it what do you hear now about the nfl, “its a passing league, you need a great qb to win”. well then if we are to fix our defense a shutdown corner is what we need. besides imagine him learning from the best like Champ for the next couple of years. and since i still think the chargers are the team to beat then we have to stop rivers and the passing game. and we can always take care of the d line with the next draft picks hopefully 3 2nd round picks if we trade orton. thats just my opinion, still happy on whoever the Johns choose.

  43. sndvl says:

Deangelo and Revis have 3 pro bowl nods each. A. Cromartie 1. Antrel Rolle & Merriweather have back to back nods.
McCourty has 1 in his rookie year!

  44. sndvl says:

Oh, I forgot to add Tracy Porter. Who had a pivotal play in a recent superbowl!

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I will say this again, No one is belittling the value of DT. And if the 2nd rounders arent good this year which I believe they are and will be, we can get a first round one next, also is it in the first round or in top 10 we are talking … and if you include Freeny and other DEs then technically we can include safetys we can include “The 5th Dimension” Eric Berry who was a HUGE impact player for his team, IN his rookie season. I personally think he coulda been the defensive player of the year last year with 92tckl, 4ints, 2 sacks and 1 ff. (thats if we are talking DB v DL not CB v DT)

And on that list suh is the only real impact rookie. The rest have done their jobs and done it well and a couple others have just been solid not stand out. The fact that you can also list all these DL means they may not be that rare. A real cover CB/playmaker/whatever is pretty tought to come by. Peterson covers, he is physical in the run game, and he returns. I know we need DT but we also need help in the secondary, we also need help in the running game, we also need many things. If Adrian Peterson was in this draft and was the best player overall, i would say take a RB why, cuz we are this high, he is the best, and while we dont NEED a running back, our running game could use a TON of help.

Also one more thing, WRs are taken pretty much that high, Calvin Johnson was taken number 2 over all in 2007. He is probably in on as many plays as the CB covering him so if you can spend that on a WR why not a CB? Why not on someone to prevent that WR from scoring. Im not saying Peterson is the second coming of champ bailey or going to be the best CB to ever play the game, but he is gonna be pretty damn good and I would just rather not kick myself for passing just cuz “They are not taken that high”. Lotta impactful linemen but very few “shutdown/playmaker/versatile” corners. So DL is actually the dime a dozen and since we are not in the 3-4 anymore … they are actually slightly less important. Just my take. This is all talk however cuz at the end of the day, the head honcos make the decision but I believe petersonis the best, cleanest, and safest pick. Talented, Great character and work ethic. Ill be dissapointed if we dont take peterson but ill be fine with whoever…

  46. sndvl says:

I just realized, our DC is the former DB coach from the Saints. Where Tracy Porter played. And PP being from Louisiana…
Elway came out and said his player ‘evaluations’ are drawn from people he would play against. Well a CB can be a QBs bain…

  47. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yup he did say that which was why he had respect for champ and wanted him back. I also took into consideration the fact that our DC was saints secondary coach. I think he can coach up Peterson on technique and so can champ. Saints superbowl year, they had the most turnovers returned for a TD, I hope he brings that kinda juice to the broncos.

  48. milehighmagic88 says:

But I think that’s the point isn’t it? We already have one of those cornerbacks that every QB hates going against. Why go get another one when there are so many glaring holes all over this roster that still need to be filled? We’ve had one of those rare shutdown corners for 7 years and our D has been awful for about the past 5. I just don’t see how getting another stud CB will help at all. If anything I think we would get worse on D if we took that route. Just saying…

  49. strandoftds says:

You can have the two most amazing CB`s on your team, like say for instance Champ Bailey and Patrick Peterson which would be a great thing. But if you have no pass rush which starts at the point of attack at the DT it doesn`t mean a hill of beans.

  50. socalbigbroncofan says:

woodson was a great blitzer in capers defense. so a cb can have an affect on the passer. it still helps with a dt. and besides talent i think our d sucked because of coaches. we did great with nolan in those first six games till mcd took over. then no nolan. and the whole site agreed that once we got a d minded coach we would get better. im up for whoever we draft. i like dareus too but i wont rule out peterson.
