D’s Back…Orange Jerseys the key?

December 8th, 2008 - 9:44am by mark_cooper

Had to mention the orange jerseys baby!!! I like it. The D held Larry Johnson to 36 yards in 11 carries and that in my book goes a long way. Keeping the Chiefs to under a 100 yards rushing is a job well done. One game at a time and build on past performances. It’s anyone’s Superbowl this year.

The Cowboys lost again, giving one away to the Steelers and Jets lost again and we get a look at Carolina tonight who’ll be on a short week. Giants lost the Eagles and the Titans and the Steelers look like the teams to beat in the AFC.

Marshall walks away with 11 catches and a few beauties, which was nice to see. With Royal catching five, and Scheffler catching five, the passing game is back in full swing. The combination of 286 yards passing and 139 yards on the ground proves a potent combination.

And Mondono will be happy about time of possession. I was bummed to see Hillis get hurt. Hopefully just a bad strain and nothing serious, we could use his running style and hands for the playoffs.

It’s what happens at the end of the year that counts and right now if we can stay steady and keep improving and get a few more guys back and healthy, fun things could be on the horizon….one game at a time.

Your Damn right I’m happy with the TIME OF POSSESSION! D36:38 K23:22 That was the biggest differential since the Browns 10-22-06 D37:17 C22:45 WOW! only the third time this year the Broncos have controled the clock. I was’nt sure they were going to get there the way they started.
I sat down with a frothy adult beverage, my Orange T. Bell jersey and BAM 3&out, then BAM INT. and they’er passing on first down!? You don’t want to know what I’m yelling at my T.V. at this point.
And then came Hillis, The O Coaches must’ve heard me 11 play’s 80yrd. 5:27 TD!, then 14 play’s 80yrd. 6:57 TD!, 12 plays 66yrd. 6:43 FG! 12 plays 95yrd. 6:07! WOW! CONTROL THE TIME OF POSSESSION and you CONTROL THE GAME!
I have to give kodos to the O Line man they had thier hands full. This KC team is allot better than thier record thats a team thats playing like a young team. The Broncos better watch out next year. R. Clady agianst J. Babin, Babin gave him fits but Clady was the better man. R. Harris against G. Dorsey good matchup, good for us. The three in the middle Wiegmann, Hamilton, & Kuper picked up every blitz, Nice job Men! Way to open those holes and protect the General!
Hillis 58yrd. 8 carries 7.2 avg. 1 catch 11yrd. 69 ttl yrd. at the half what a pace. get well soon bro.
Tatum steps in beautifully! D. Graham had some key catches. The D holds well in the 3rd. qtr. J. Barrette on Gonzales YES! W. Woodyard with 8 tackles 7 solo! Well done everbody well done.
Of course you have the obviouse in B. Marshall, J. Cutler, E. Royal Scheff…. and on and on. this TEAM played like a TEAM and it showed. Thats how you win the close ones. TIME OF POSSESSION!
As well as they did play there is much room for improvement though 1 3&out ( I hate those!), to many passes on first down 22 passes on first down and 9 runs on first down good news is they had 31 first downs. Keep up the good work, focus on the Panthers and get it done.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !
P.S. One more note 1 penalty for 5 yards come on guy’s you can do better than that! Just kidding NICE JOB!

    Coop!
Great points about the balance we showed this week. I’m completely bummed about Hillis. Lady Luck definitely doesn’t smile down us too much this season when it comes to health. As soon as it appears things are going the Broncos way …another injury! If Hillis is gone for the season it will be another huge obstacle that the Broncos have to overcome in order to win a playoff game or two. I know I said playoffs but I just have to believe with three games left the Broncos will get a division championship clinching win!

I was completely impressed with the defense again. Stopping Larry Johnson was a sign of more growth for our young defense! I’m not sure you can keep calling these guys rookies much longer :) By the way another blow to our thin Linebackers corp with Hagan getting hurt on special teams. Anyone know the extent of his injury?

I’m beginnig to wonder how much longer Prater will be our field goal kicker? Any guesses…I’m sure some loyal bloggers will have a few prophecies concerning his future as a Bronco. I’m wondering if letting go of Elam was such a smart thing after all? I know the guy didn’t have the leg he had at the beginning of his Bronco career, but with the game on the line Elam was money! I’ll say it…I miss Elam :P

I couldn’t end this blog without commenting on how well our 1st round draft pick is playing. It’s starting to become cliche but you really do build a superbowl caliber team via the draft….errr..drafting O-line first. Clady has to be the most agile big man I have seen in quite some time. He gets low and uses his lower body (hips & feet) like he is 6’1 not 6’7. Clady looks like a mainstay on our O-line for years to come …hopefully…free agency makes it tough to make statements like that.

Thanks again Coop for your thoughts…looking forward to next weeks contest. It should give some insight to how far we can go into the playoffs. Dre Bly will have to cover the most prolific WR in the game today (Steve “I think I’ll catch 3 TD’s today” Smith)! I like Dre’s chances…if anything he is a crafty vet that plays with a lot of confidence.
    Peace!

  6. 07elway says:

Hey Coop! Another great blog with many great points.

First off, AWESOME game!!!!!! Loved every minute of it. Although our guys started to scare me in the first half, I had to remind myself that when the 2nd half comes around we are a powerhouse!! We lay it all out on the line for the world to see in the 2nd half and the Chiefs got it shoved back at them in the 2nd. And now we all know we can win a game at home against a VERY weak and bad team, all the while fighting for the lead. I’ve noticed our guys are fighters when we come back from behind and I love that.

I thought is was funny (don’t know why) but also a huge compliment to this team when I heard this a couple hours before the game. Someone was saying they talked to Bill Cowher about the biggest playoff contenders in the AFC and he went on to say that he thinks the Broncos are going to be the most dangerous team!!!!! And if you really think about it we already are. We have become so unpredictable its not even funny but that’s what is going to make us so dangerous. No one knows if we’re going to win or lose a game, not even the players or anybody. I mean who would have thought we would have lost to Oakland at Invesco then go on to grab the win over the Jets in an away game and we still be at the top of our division?? You’d think it would be the other way around. Anyway, I just love that Cowher said that and thought that highly of this team. And like Coop said, if we keep improving we are going to be a force to be reckoned with. But we have to take the time to learn from our mistakes and correct them and we will be the most dangerous team in the AFC. Now that would be a sight to see, now I got myself all excited!!

I hope Hillis’ injury isn’t too serious either… we really really need him. It worries me sick that we could be without him for a month but I have to remind myself that even with all the injuries we’ve had we’ve come sooooooo far. I have NO doubts Cutler will lead us to the Promise Land and it will be GOOOOOOD!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

    Coop,

I think we need to make the ORANGE jersey’s our permanent HOME jersey!

    They are beautiful!

I’m really happy with how the defense is playing. They are making plays when they HAVE TO. Thats all you need with the offense we have (kinda like in ’97 and ’98).

Cutler is the man, thank god Shanahan saw something in him a few years ago. I just love our offense, its a thing of beauty!

Tho, I hope we do nothing but draft defense next year. I know we did that before (got little out of it), but we’re stacked on offense now. There will be some good LB’s and D-Linemen in this draft. Maybe trade up for Rey Maualuga or Laurenitis? And we need a pass rush BAD!

Hillis will be sorely missed. In fact he might be the difference between success or failure in the playoffs.

  8. 66forHOF says:

No, the jerseys’ weren’t the key the chiefs just suck and our run D has improved much over the past few weeks. Remember how bad the D was against the Saints? We were wearing the Orange jerseys’ that game but, I do like the orange jerseys’ and hope they bring’em back.

  11. broncofannsd says:

The Chiefs do not suck. Records are not always a good indication of how good or bad a team really is. Our D has improved a lot from the start of the season, so you can’t compare this game against the Saints game.

Losing Hillis for the season sucks! He is a stud and deserves to be the starter next year. I’m looking forward to seeing what Bell and Pope can do for this team.

I would love to see them bring back the Orange Jerseys for home games next year.

That was a great team win yesterday.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  12. 80stheman says:

I’ve said for a long time now, the orange jerseys should be the regular home uni, and the blue jersey should be the alternate. Love the orange!

Sorry to hear abut Hillis. Speedy recovery, Peyton!

    How about Mike Anderson?

  13. bronc fan in WA says:

Everyone needs to quit asking for Mike Anderson or Shaun Alexander ok!

We have Tatum Bell, Selvin Young, and P.J. Pope. They can all get the job done. And may I add that Shanahan announced he will be signing practice squad RB Cory Boyd. Apparently Boyd is a stud and a lot of the players in the locker room are high on this guy. Don’t ask for old burnt out talent. We don’t need that. We will use these young guys that can be a suprise since many teams don’t know much about them.

Good win though, Champ we need ya back to shut down Steve Smith.

And I sure hope all those Bly haters out there are quiet now. This guy has stepped up each day and deserves some respect.

  14. CARAMELLOO says:

1st off congrads to the team for a good tough much needed win. The injury to Hillis SUCKS just like every other injury we’ve had, but now another player has to step up and do their thing. I agree with BAK2BAKDB7…… Prater is working my damn nerves! He has left and continues to leave points off the board with his misses. I’m also with those who said that we are still ok with the RB’s we have. Now is not the time to bring players in who don’t know our system.

Yesterday was a team win and I think guys are finally starting to understand their roles on the team. I know alot of people want the 30 plus points and win by double digits games, but a win is a win and it doesn’t matter how u get it. Now it’s time to focus our attention on the panthers and ONLY the panthers. As long as us fans continue to support the (ORANGE AND BLUE) GREATEST COLORS IN THE WORLDDDDDDD we will be just fine.

  15. archangel77 says:

Great Comments Coop! Barrett was stunning. If you were to look at any rookie safety (THATS RIGHT! A SAFETY!) and tell him he was going to be manned up on TE Tony Gonzales for the entire game I think you would have had to but them on suicide watch!. But not Barrett. He goes out and gives the future hall of famer fits all day. When you think that the one touch down that Gonzales caught was against Bell then that makes Barrett’s performance all the more impressive. You could see Gonzales really sucking wind by the third quarter. Barrett’s speed was killing him. I think that the entire D deserves a game ball for holding the Chiefs scoreless for an entire half. 07elway makes a good point about Cower. I think that if there were any job that Cower would jump at, it would be the Denver Head Coaching job. I am not saying that Shanahan is or should be going anywhere but Cower has always been intrigued by the Broncos.

A great Team effort yesterday !! The 95 yard drive in the 4th qtr was awesome. It was great to see Tatum Bell get into the open field (28 yard run). The Chiefs are a talented squad, and they made us earn the Win yesterday. Great tackle by Dre to stop Thigpen on 4th down!
Hated to see and read about the loss of Hillis.. It’s time for someone else to step up in the backfield — Tatum Bell, PJ Pope, and the kid just bumped up from the practice squad – Cory Byrd. Oh yeah, whatever happened to Selvin Young ?? Is he in IR ??

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  17. peterg says:

The “D” is back because young who normally would be third string at best players are getting a chance and they are working harder than those overpaid underperforming stars. Hard work will get you everywhere. Just ask that nobody who got a chance in Denver back in 1983. Now he’s a head coach. Some of you may remember Gary Kubiak. If our “stars” worked as hard as their backups and cared as much we might be 10-3 or better. Keep working guy.
P.S. I remember someone on this website back in the spring mention a free agent named Wesley Woodyard and what a great addition he was. I say he stays when the starters come back because he brings energy and “just makes plays.” He’s a stud at LB. Now that was a good call

  18. rayjr26 says:

great game defense, i agree that woodyard has earned his place in the starting line up! breaks my heart to see hillis is out for the season, he has been a stud the last several games, and will be sorely missed. hope we have another diamond in the ruff somewhere to carry us through the playoffs. im sorry, but i dont think tatum bell is the answer here! he has been out of football for almost a year, had probs holding on to the ball last time he was with us, and does not run with the kind of authority that we need! whats the word on cory byrd?? i have heard some good things, but have not seen him in action. as for prater, i think he will be around a while, unless someone better comes along.
Oh and I LOVE THE ORANGE, ITS INTIMIDATING!!! my jersey is the alternate orange, and i would not trade it for anything!! GO BRONCOS

  19. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

It’s time for the blue jerseys to become the so-called “alternates.” In any case, this team has remarkable resiliency. Perhaps the Dolphin or Raider games could have been death knells, but the team has responded effectively to all adversity it faces. While the Chargers continue to whine about how the officials screw them every week, the Broncos find ways to win. That’ s what good teams do. The Panthers are a tough team but we can beat them. It’s all about playing our game and Cutler will take care of the rest. When in Rome: GO BRONCOS!!!

  20. archangel77 says:

    rayjr26,

Boyd is a 6’1”, 213 lbs. Gamecock who runs with a lot of authority and vision. He doesn’t go down on initial contact and is pretty good in open space. He is an excellent receiver who has a great turn around and gets fairly decent yards after the catch. The guy plays even bigger than his size. He runs like a back that has another 15 lbs. on his frame. I know that there were some questions about his explosiveness and some concerns about his ability to hold up under the pounding an NFL back takes during the season. He catches the ball like former Bronco FB Kyle Johnson did but he runs with more authority and elusiveness then Johnson did. He does not have the power that Hillis had or the hands but I think that he will contribute more than Bell can in the ground game. A friend of mine in N.C. mentioned him to me before the draft but I was locked in on Hillis so I didn’t pay the attention that I should have. When he hit the practice squad I spent the time to check up on him. Oddly enough my friend had also mentioned Woodyard to me and I had the good fortune of watching him play before he became a Bronco. Looks like I should have listened about Boyd as well. Interestingly, DT Kenny Peterson mentioned Boyd’s outstanding work on the practice squad as one of the reasons that the Bronco’s were so well prepared to play against Larry Johnson. In Peterson’s words Boyd can “really bring it”. Oddly enough, unless Pope has been deactivated Boyd’s call up to the starting line up officially exhausts our supply of running backs from the practice squad. I think the kid could surprise if given the chance. I also think that the Broncos should take a closer look at Pope who has a great burst and is a 200% effort guy. It will be interesting to see what package they put together. On a side note I watched the Monday night game and have come to the conclusion that Carolina was tailor made for Peyton Hillis. I haven’t seen so much arm tackling in a long time. If Carolina had tried that against Hillis he could have had a huge day. Carolina also spent a majority of their time playing their linebackers up close. On the offensive side of the ball the Panthers running backs looked at the top of their game against Tampa. Denver is going to have to put points on the board quickly and often to match up well against the Panthers. I believe we can take Delhomme and even Smith but if that running game gets going it could be a long day. I think Barret is going to be tested again, this time against his ability to support the run. His speed will be crucial. Hillis vs. Beason would have been a great battle. The battle I’m looking forward to now is Pepper’s vs. Clady. Peppers was man handling the LT from the Bucs and was getting an amazing amount of pursuit from the backside of the play. Did anyone else who watched the game notice any hopeful match ups for this Sunday’s game?

    Hey Coop,
not sure what happened but i had typed out a long response but when i hit submit it never went through. not going to go back through it all again so i’ll make this one short.
Hillis going down was a huge loss, let’s see what this Boyd kid can do, Tatem is fine and i’m hoping he does well carrying the load.
the Panthers will be a tough game but i think our D has stepped up huge against the run especially when facing the bigger named backs. Cutler is on fire and i loved how he controlled this game, he should have a huge day next week.
Like Archangel says i can’t wait to see how Clady holds up against Pepper. this will be a big test for the Rookie but i see him coming out on top again like he has all year long. as long as we keep the play calling even i can see us taking this game and clinching the West.
I can’t wait for Sunday to get here, I’LL BE AT THE GAME!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!
BTW, love the Orange jersey’s i’m buying one this coming payday, hope i can find a Royal or Hillis one!

  24. rustycletis says:

Losing Hillis sucks. I love his strong running style. Even when the holes aren’t there, he can pick up positive yards. I hope we keep him for next year and use him at tailback. I like him better than all the other backs we have or have had.
LBWilson56: I agree that Prater hasn’t done a great job lately, but he is still doing ok for such a young kid. We were spoiled big time with Elam. Prater is doing ok. I think he is 3 out of 8 between 40-49 yards. He has done well inside 40 though. I think the coaching staff needs to think about this when they decide to kick a really long FG. Perhaps it would be better to go for it on 4th down if it is within a yard or 2.
I hope Tatum is ready. He did well coming in occasionally for Hillis, but now he needs to carry the load. More than anything, I’m worried that he won’t protect Jay against the blitz when called to do it. He was never a good blocker. Hopefully he will stay healthy.

  25. BAK2BAKDB7 says:

Wow Great reading! Loved all the comments and insight. However, now I’m biting my fingernails as I anxiously await the kickoff between the Broncos and Panthers!

1st thing that jumps out at me as I read all the blogs above was taking care of the ball. I think one of the main reasons why Tatum Bell was traded was because of his lack of ball security. I can remember a few games where Tatum coughed it up and it hurt us. It’s not rocket science and if your even 1/2 the bronco fan I am..you know turnovers have been the root of all evil when it comes to Bronco losses this season. I have noticed that all the playmakers have made a serious effort to take care of the ball. I saw Hillis, Royal, and Marshall all put two arms around the ball at the first sign of contact. Great job of coaching by the Broncos Staff…it is something they obviously spend a great deal of time on and it shows. Tatum deserves a shot at the starting Tailback, but if he fumbles I’ll be the first one to start looking for the rope! Hopefully, Shanahan has another ace up his sleeve with our practice squad RB (Boyd) or Pope.

2nd thing that stands out to me is the obvious challenge our DEFENSE will have in containing the Panthers run game. As I watched this weeks Monday night game I grimmaced every time I saw those two backs break tackles for big plays. What makes this run game even more deadly is the play action off of it to Steve Smith! UGHHH! Agreed our defense is getting better but this week is like a championship game if you ask me. Stop the Panther offense and just watch all the people jump on the Bronco Bandwagon!

3rd and final point made by many Bronco Bloggers is how fun the offense is to watch. Except when we throw INTS for TD’s! DOH!!! I posted once how Cutler scares me and at times reminds me of Favre with his carelessness, but I was quick to do a 180 and say what an awesome QB he is. I still feel the same way. However, Cutler has a few things in his favor that make him better than most QB’s in the league:
    1) Royal and Marshall catching the ball and YAC! (yards after catch)
2)Cutler’s ability to not get caught up in his mistakes and go make the next play count (Very Elwayesque in my opinion)
    3) The two-headed monster in Scheffler and Graham. These two TE’s don’t get the credit they deserve in the passing game.

To wrap up this point about how exciting our offense is…I would be remiss without mentioning the big guys up front. I really believe they are coming into their own and are the real reason why the offense is purring.

The offense keeping stride and pulling away from the Panthers this week is the key to victory! All in all…..I’m sick with anticipation as the hours slowly tick by till kickoff!
    BRONCO ORANGE ROCKS!
PEACE AND GOOD TIDINGS TO ALL!

Thats what good fans do support the TEAM give good Ideas to fix whats wrong and wear thier Orange and Blue proudly!(ESPECIALLY THIER ORANGE!)
However I did read some diggs on the kicker Prater. Hey I’m not to happy with his field goal performance either but calling for his head is not going to fix it. I remember a young Elam who wasn’t perfect and a young Karlis who was not perfect as well. I say lets focus on some of the good things he has brought to this TEAM like field position after kick offs and the Broncos have had a whole lot more touch backs this year than in most recent years. I’d also like to point out that there are other players involved in the kicking of a field goal and one off snap or a bad hold could contribute, not to mention bad timing. all I’m saying is it’s a TEAM sport and let’s give M. Prater a little support and a little time to get better and I believe M. Prater could be one of the best in the league. He certianly has the leg for it.

Pat murray 6’3″ 310lbs. what kind of guard is he?
I wish Lowery the best of luck somewhere else.
Do you think Pinnock will get any playing time?

What a challenge the Broncos have against the Panthers, that could be the best one two punch in the league. I hope the O Coaches keep the faith and call on Tatum, and PJ to carry the running game and keep this O ballanced. If the Broncos can keep the panthers O off the field they will have a good chance for a win. ( I think I say that every game but it’s true! )

  33. mark_cooper says:

Great blogs folks and good stuff to think about. On Prater, I only talk about football players and kickers aren’t football players……..just kidding, that’s always been our standard line when someone asks an O lineman about a kicker we say, “who, he’s not a football player, he’s a kicker. LOL

Kickers get in and out of grooves and I don’t know the first think about kicking so honestly I don’t comment because it’s like talking about Quantum Science or something like that….no clue. I always figured if we’d have done our job we wouldn’t have needed kick a field goal. Simple mind here.

On the moves this week, Putzier, Pope, Boyd all good moves and my main concern was the guys getting healthy. That will really help if we can start getting a few guys back over the next few weeks, pre-playoffs. The reps will make a big difference on the final run.

I can’t give enough credit to the O-line as they are really holding off the dogs and the running game seems to be coming together regardless of who’s back there. The zone blocking scheme creates running lanes. Cutler moving around I think has also helped tire out the D-lineman and gives our guys a few angles to knock some heads.

This week will be a great test for the entire team. Smash and dash have been fun to watch and will be a big challenge for the D and the Panthers passing game is Playoff caliber. At 10-3 in the NFC south, we will have played every team in that division this year with mixed results so it almost like playing a playoff game this week.

  34. BAK2BAKDB7 says:

    Coop,
Great point about the kicker….the offense just needs to score TD’s and we don’t even have this much blogging about Prater. I just thought I would mention it because during the game I heard the announcer tell how Shanahan said “if he (Prater) doesn’t get his confidence back soon we’ll just find someone else.” Gotta love Shanahan!

Still counting the hours down until kickoff and it’s not getting any easier. I guess I’m so wound about this game because I really feel this one gives us all a hint of how we just might do in the playoffs? Anyone agree? Disagree? Pressure is so thick you can cut it with a knife if you ask me. The Broncos have said they like playing as the underdog and with their back to the wall. Pretty much sums it up for the game this week … in my mind anyways.

Monodono…how do you get your info? I love it and we need to talk so I can access it as well. :P I think Jeb is a great addition and the
Bronco faithfull all called the Boyd call up! I’m really beginning to like all of you! So insightful and likeminded (Go Broncos!).

Anyone know the status of champ and D.J.? I wish these guys could play this week. Well gotta run but trust me …come Sunday…I will be either glued to my TV set or listening to sirrius radio as I work in my garage on some sort of honeydo…..
    Peace!

Man did anyone look at the injury report. CRAZY! I think the Broncos need a little depth in the Deffensive back field.

I for one cant wait for the match up of the Broncos O Line and panthers d line it’s going to be an epic battle up front. I hope the O Coaches call on the running game particularlly on first down, I don’t even care if they only get 1yrd each time but they got to do it to set up the rest of the game. Your right COOP this will be a great test for this TEAM.

Coop who’s this kid P. Murray?

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

BAK2BAKDB7, just go to press box and hit the media room you will have hrs. & hrs. & hrs. & hrs. of reading material. I also go to the opposing teams web sites, most of them suck compared to this site. By the way theres a great artical in The Denver Post by Lou from Littlelton on the Broncos O Line and a charity fund raiser at the Samaritan House they helped raise $160,000 dollars. Just another reason to praise this O Line! ! !

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !
