Costly Win versus Buccaneers, 4-1

October 6th, 2008 - 9:23am by mark_cooper

Costly game with Scheffler and Royal banged up. We’ll get to that later.

The funniest play of the day was the Marcus Thomas interception. He dropped back into coverage from the inside rush position and intercepted the ball then proceeded to look like a stalled pick-up truck in a parking lot. A lot of shake and bake, juking like jello and trying to pull his leg out of the mud and then coughing it up. I’d have loved to seen his face when the ball came out and the Bucs recovered.

The defense had flashes of brilliance and at times played as well as I’ve seen them play all year. (Blogger)-Monodono, you may have hit it on the head last week with your comments about the Defense finding their identity. And Yardo, you’re always on top of it!! 3 sacks and 1 interception!!

If you didn’t know, it was Alumni weekend and I had a great time at the game as my two former teams played each other with the added benefit of seeing a bunch of the guys I played with and the guys from decades prior and after that played here. You also have to take your hat off to Mr. Bowlen, because year in and year out, he and the organization really roll out the red carpet to all the Alumni and host a wonderful weekend event of golf, meetings and the game. Thank you Mr. Bowlen, from all the Alumni.

Gary Zimmerman was inducted into the Ring of Fame in a nice half time ceremony. When I played in Tampa, we’d pull film on him just to watch his techniques because he was by far one of the best left tackles to play the game. Actually I can think of anyone better, so he was, “The Best”. It was fitting to see him inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this year too. I could do an entire blog on other Broncos that should be there but you don’t have the time to read that one.

Crazy week in the NFL with all the Al Davis comments and then Warren Sapp commenting after the fact. There’s more going on in the “Black Hole” of Raider nation than anyone wants to admit but it seems to be coming out piece-mail this week and probably for weeks to come. Stay tuned on that debacle.

Heal-fast will be the theme this week. The receiving corps will be a little thin but the running game was impressive at times and with a little over 100 yards rushing, maybe we’re on to something. Did you all see the “freight-train” Pittman run late in the game where he ran through and then over a few Bucs, pile-driving them into the ground?? Those guys were picking up their jock-straps after that train wreck and probably calling 911 after being run over by like that.

Fantastic game!

WoW Mr.Cooper…can’t tell you how thrilled I am I found your Blog! Great stuff and what an insider’s perspective. I watched you play, and I’m excited you’re still a fan. I hear stories all the time of ex-athletes that retire and never want to even watch a game. As I read your blogs, I definitely see a diehard fan of the game. I think you make a great point about how costly this last win was. I hope those guys come back 100% but more then likely we will see how deep we are. The mark of a true championship caliber team is how deep you are at every position. Would you agree? No matter what, it was a great win for us this week and even sweeter to see the chargers go down. Nothing like a two game cushion. :)
Look forward to reading more of your blogs mr. Cooper! Peace!

did anyone know, that dj williams and nate webster are 3rd and 5th in the league in tackles. Just thought that was cool. and cutler is number one in passing yards, but will probably be second after brees plays tonight.

Great blog Coop… but I’ll have to disagree a little bit on the funniest moment of the game. On another post I said the hit Champ put on Griese was just hilarious. It still is!!!!!! HA HA!! But that interception-fumble-fumble-and then fumble Again all on the same play was pretty entertaining. I wish we had ended up with the ball but that a pretty good moment of the game.

I hope Scheffler and Royal aren’t seriously injured, those two are critical to our offense and special teams. I think we’ll be on the verge of “BIG TROUBLE” if they are out for a long period of time. And not just so they can play real soon again but for their own good, I really do hope they are okay and the same goes for Russell, I think it is, who got injured last week at KC.

A big congrats to Zimmerman, he deserved that Hall of Fame induction and his place in the Ring of Fame. I hope next year the NFL starts SERIOUSLY thinking about some other INCREDIBLE Broncos who deserve their place next to Elway & Zimmerman in Canton. Terrell Davis has been WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overlooked and Gradishar needs to be in the HOF. I really am shocked he hasn’t been inducted by now. I mean seriously he was a major part of our “Orange Crush” – how can you overlook that???? They’re nuts!!!! We need more Broncos in Canton. That is long over due.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

    What a great game!!

The defense made a HUGE turn-around from last week. It was amazing watching the secondary exert the control to not over-pursue and make the play!! It was almost like watching a different set of guys at times!!!GREAT JOB D!!!!! I really hope that this was proverbally the “turning of the corner” for the D because they really showed what they are capable of!!
(The hit on Griese was awesome!!!!)

Like eveyone else I’m concerned with Scheffler and Royal being out for too long, although Stokley stepped up quite a bit and made a huge difference in offensive production. I think that Cutler is seeing that being impetuous on every play just doesn’t work in the NFL. He has a great arm and just needs to pair that with a little discretion in pass selection and we’ll see the pass TD’s increase.

The best part of the game was that the Broncos earned that win. There weren’t any questionable calls in our favor (although many against us) and we stayed in there all 60 minutes to win it. The orange and blue controlled the entire game.

    BRING IT’ JACKSONVILLE!!!

I appreciate the blog, Coop, I just hope that Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler are both healthy for the Jags. The truth of the matter is now the defense can make plays. I’m also grateful that I’m not a loser Raider fan where my team is in consistent turmoil. Under Mr. Bowlen, the Broncos are a class organization and there aren’t any of these problems. We have stability at coach, and a young exciting team to cheer for! Thanks for your insights, again Coop. I’ll keep reading.

  6. broncosfrance says:

Broncos will never be raiders , our organisatiosn is smartest , the same coach for 14 years despite struggles at times ( not so often in fact ) , it’s the recipe for success , provided this coach is a good one of course . As long as Davis will drive this organisation , we’ll be ok !!

Hey, thanks for the mention Coop.

That was an awesome game and the D showed up. I hope they can continue to shine and pull things together.

Something else I’m looking forward to is the 3-4 defense progressing and getting Jarvis Moss in the mix at OLB. Shanahan mentioned it this week in a press conference so we’ll see if he gets his turn. We need this kid to develop and if that means standing him op, cool with me.

  8. monodono says:

Coop your a class act, my grilfriend thinks I’m a superstar thanks for the mention.
I hope Scheff, Royal, & Russell get better we need them out there. Whats your thoughts about signing Chad Mustard back on the TEAM, he’s a BIG man. He should help open some holes! Does this mean Scheff is hurt bad? I hope not. God Bless & get well.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  9. broncos14441 says:

Congrats on being named the The Ring of Fame Coop!

Another great read. I think we’ll be fine with these injuries. Stoke really steped up on Sunday after Eddie left, and Grahm can replace Scheff. He may not have Tony’s hands, but when it comes to blocking, It’s like having another tackle!!!

Predictions: A low scoring affair, FOR THE JAGS! I say the Broncos get revenge after last year loss to Jacksonville and win this one BIG! About 27 – 9 seems right. Mabey they’ll get lucky and score a meaningless TD late and make it 27 – 16, but don’t let scores decive you.

  10. mileshigh67 says:

What about letting Nate Jackson take over on the Sheffler downs? He is coming along nicely as a pass catching tight end. Graham is a great blocker and probably looking to make up for his earlier drops, I say give him a chance to catch a couple on some run downs. A little trickery and deception has always been a part of Shanahan’s arsenal.

  11. outoftowner says:

I for one, would love to hear who you think should be in the ring of fame!!!

  12. mark_cooper says:

BAK2BAKDB7, thanks for adding to the blog, depth is the thing that’s tough in the league these days with the spending cap. It somewhat evens out the league. P.S. no Mr. Cooper stuff here on this blog, you make me feel old and I’m in denial of getting old :o ) peace.

jazzyfrizzle, great point, everyone look at the NFL stats page pretty fun to watch our guys each week, where they stack up on the board.

07elway, You can disagree any time you want, that’s what makes a good blog, O.K. I’ll buy that, Bailey knocking Greise out was good but I would have rather had him in there than Garcia. What I was thinking was how Thomas was trying to be a “Barry Sanders” type running back and wasn’t going anywhere them the ball pops out. I know what was going through his mind when he lost the ball and we can write that here and not be censored!! ha! ha! Oh yea Canton needs some help picking Bronco players…long story.

thundersrevenge, your always on it, great game is right, the D really came to play and we need more of that and the confidence seems to be building. That’s important to peak, come playoff time.

BradJamesBroncoFan. you’re always welcome and I try to keep it light and fun with a few war stories from time to time that don’t put you to sleep. Some new blood needs to buy the Raiders organization…….nah…..let them suffer. :o )

broncosfrance, no love lost here, still a Raider hater. Mr. Bowlen runs a class organization top to bottom, it shows.

yardo, you’re the reason for the answer I’m doing this week. Sometimes I just try to answer everyone globally so thought I’d change it up and I agree I’d really like to see what Jarvis has. I’d like to see him outside. That’s what helped Mecklenburgs career.

monodono, you are a superstar, tell her I said so!! On Chad, I don’t know al ot about him other than with Scheffler out he may be there temporarily and I know he can play tackle, so as the running game kicks in he could be a added weapon on the line to knock the defense off the ball in a two-tight offense. Tell us what you think.

broncos14441, thanks for the cuddos, but it was Zimmerman not me. Would have loved to been as good as him but there aren’t many Zimmermans to ever play in the league. I had a fun career and could play ever position on the line, you know, smart, from “The “U” and all that, but no Zimmerman here. I had a tough career staying healthy but fun and a lot of stories and games.

mileshigh67, we need Nate so I wish him a big game!! if he healthy.

outoftowner, that could be a entire blog, so I’ll save it for one. Who do you think. Give us three names.

    Go Broncos, COOP

  13. monodono says:

COOP, I think that Chad has some experience great size and like I said earlier he should be able to help the Oline open some holes for Pitman & Co. P.S. I love the Two-Tight O.
But I just read that KC wants to trade T. Gonzales, whats your thoughts on THE BRONCOS bringing him in ? I think he would be a Great pick up! Not that I dont like Scheff but he’s hurt & Tony is one of the Greatest players of all time. What a tandem Cutler & Gonzales could be in the RED ZONE! Defenses accross the League would quiver & shake @ the thought of faceing Cutler, Marshall, Pitman, & GONZALES!!!

  14. mark_cooper says:

monodono, hmmm Tony Gonzales? I heard that too and haven’t figured out the reasoning behind something like that with the Chiefs?? That type of trade may depend on the degree of Schefflers injury….or the financial package and cost which are probably to expensive.

See you on the next post
