Coaching moves & this weeks picks!!

January 19th, 2010 - 9:47am by mark_cooper

Congrats to Coaches Dennison, Nolan and Turner. It’s part of the game. I like how the press and everyone jumps to conclusions and wants to point a finger for a coaching change and make a big deal out of it. That’s coaching. One of the main reasons I didn’t go into coaching after football. Someone else is in control of your destiny. Personal choice, that’s all.

Coach Turner is working his way to a head job and deservedly so as the associate head coach in Washington. Rick Dennison and Gary Kubiak go way back to the days we all played together here in the 80′s and he’ll be Gary’s offensive coordinator….kinda figured that was coming. I also think Rick will be a head coach at some point too. Smart guy. Played against him.

Coach Nolan….difference of approach than the head coach? Maybe, but it’s Coach McDaniels Team. He makes the calls and has to live and die by them. The NFL (Not For Long) League is not very forgiving for players and coaches. I run a business like a team, if I can upgrade my staff or have someone that’s not on the same page, you have to make a change.

The NFL is worse. You win or you get fired, traded or cut. (been there done that) Dan Reeves and I didn’t see things the same way and I asked to be cut or traded. Tampa was where I landed. Look at all the head coaching changes already. Tougher business than you’d think. It’s easy to second guess folks, but when you’re in the head coaches seat…it’s always hot. I say, CONGRATS and good luck to each of them. Thanks for your time here. Each has a lot to offer under the right scenario for them.

THIS WEEKS PICKS:
VIKES AND THE OLE MAN FARVE OVER THE SAINTS
COLTS OVER THE JETS

Those are my picks. Vike’s pick is from the heart and the others a professional pick.

Lendale White would fit right in with what we’re trying to do,he’s got my vote.

Darn, I always miss the awesome conversations.

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed about Tebow is his throwing mechanics. He has an elongated throwing motion. He’s a good QB don’t get me wrong. This can be a liability many times especially in the NFL vs. college. When you have an elongated throwing motion it gives the pass rushers more of a chance to strip the ball when you’re bringing it back. Also you take longer to pull the trigger sometimes. If you look at all the good QBs they don’t have a problem pulling the trigger. Hopefully Orton will improve in that area for next season. Tebow may or may not be a good QB in the NFL, but he’ll either fail or succeed on a team other than the Broncos. I just don’t see McD taking a QB early, not when he hasn’t even seen what Brandstater can do.

  4. rayjr26 says:

ya brian, im with you! i dont see McD takin a QB and CERTAINLY not tebow! if, and thats a BIG if, he takes a QB i think it will be another late rounder! McD drafts QBs the way Shanny used to draft HBs. always lookin for that diamond in the rough. and baylin, i thought about my post tag, and perhaps i will change it! let me know what you think! lol

    sndvl, good research on FA’s.

I ‘m with you on Franklin and LenDale White, if they don’t come through we have other options including Pickett or Hampton for NT and Ronnie Brown, but he is restricted, and even Mike Bell for power Backs. As far as power backs are concerned though, I think that could be an area where we could do well in the draft, I specially like Tony Gerhart and Anthony Dixon from Mississippi state at 6’1″, 235, not only a power back but great hands, both of those may be had in the third, one might even be there in the fourth.

As far as DL/DE, anybody from Green Bay is welcome in my book as they were # 1 in the league against the run. Hayward was a huge mistake for Shanny to let him go, so was Trevor Pryce, so was Bertrand Berry, the man could never hold onto a DE, could he? I don’t see the value there, he has had a lot more injuries than just the achylles you are refering to and I am afraid they are mounting up to being too big a liability.

Agreed Wiegman has been awesome his entire career, lot of heart, but his 265 lbs frame is simply not enough to manhandle the center position in this league any longer regardless of how big your heart is, and it showed last year, most good centers nowadays are over 300 lbs. Experience is key at that position, finding one in FA would make sense.

I’m buying on your choice of guards, but if we get only one in FA it’s ok as we should be able to get the other in the draft, good picks there. We do need a TE with good hands, Owen Daniels from Houston might be a possibility since the upcoming Dreessen is taking them by storm. I am not even going to say Dallas Clark, that would be too crazy, but he is a UFA, heck bringing back Putzier might even be sufficient there.

And for WR we could bring back Domenik Nixon, it was another mistake of Shanny to let him go, he has been very good for the Giants. Let’s add Cribbs to the mix for ST, then with all those needs filled, we can easily go McClain with the first pick and I can have a good summer, hahahaha.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

rayjr26, totally with you on this one, buddy! Very eloquent, addresses the essence of the game and covers both sides of the ball, well done.

  7. brian_schneider says:

We definitely need a power back to go along with our power blocking scheme. Then we can have our own version of the “smash and dash” combo. I still like the idea of using Hillis and KM. Then on some different formations you can confuse the defense since they know that they both are capable of running the ball.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Hixon is just a pick from the heart, I used to like the kid, but he doesn’t address the tall receiver factor, UFA’s that do are plenty, but probably not worth the money considering the multitude of other pressing needs we have, but they include Vincent Jackson, Chambers, Miles Austin AND T.O. LOL. Just joking.

  9. brian_schneider says:

BTW does anyone know why DynamicDave and 07elway don’t post comments anymore? I always did enjoy reading their comments.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

brian, we ALL like Hillis, but unless you have been living in a cave, and I know you haven’t (unless you have internet access there), LOL, McD doesn’t use him hardly EVER, I for one hope the team will let him go so he can show his stuff on another team, rather than me sitting here all next year hoping every single game that Hillis will get the rock, no thanks, been there, done that.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

They’re busy with their own blogs.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

If you want to check them out:
Dave is at fanhuddle.com and 07 at broncosarebest.blogspot.com

  13. rayjr26 says:

and i think 07 elway became angry at this blog and left after the televising of McD’s F bomb on NFL network!

  14. brian_schneider says:

Thanks baylinorcrush. I guess I didn’t know they had their own blogs, my cave neighbor locked down his wireless. LOL!!! I know McD won’t use Hillis, but we can always hope. We all think that he’ll throw a curve ball this offseason, maybe incorporating Hillis getting the rock more is his screw ball.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

My bad, I didn’t realize Chambers is only 5′ 11″, he plays much bigger than that, and actually Hixon is 6″ 2″, he could be a good bargain price.

  16. brian_schneider says:

Chambers drops a lot of balls too.

  17. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

    baylin,

Could it be possible that McD didnt use Hillis because he didnt feel Hillis fit well with the zone blocking scheme? And now with McD picking his own RB and OL coach will no doubt implement a power scheme and then be willing to use Hillis?

  18. broncochick1 says:

I would like to see us draft Rolondo McClain and address our defensive line issues… I also wouldn’t mind draft Jevan Snead in the second round.

  19. brian_schneider says:

codybleedsorangeandblue: But as we all saw two season ago, Hillis did pretty well in Shanny’s zone blocking scheme.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

cody, that would make sense if McD believed in the zone, but he doesn’t and even so with zone guru Turner, he still made them go the power route more often than not and still no Hillis. I believe there are much deeper issues than that, it obviously all started with the debacle of the first 3 games when Hillis made atrocious mistakes early in each game which cost us points or possession each time, but that shouldn’t be enough to bar you from playing the next 13 games, specially when we were in dire need of a power back and only had mediocre Jordan to do that. Something else is between Hillis and McD that we don’t know anything about. The biggest mistery of the 2009 season, IMO.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

broncochick1, I remember you raving about Snead early in the season, so I kept an eye out for him just to see what that was about. All I can figure is you must have a crush on the guy, he had a very poor season on a team where he should of excelled, great running game, he threw 20 INT’S and 20 TD’s, he should be a late pick at best. If we pick him in the second, I will blow my top. LOL. We don’t need the guy, Brandstater is way more qualified than that kid is at this point, he should of definitely stayed in school one more year, coming out early in his case is a huge mistake, IMO.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Back to McD/Hillis, the reason I don’t see an upside in keeping Hillis is grown men don’t really change, and specially stubborn grown men like McD definitely don’t change, McD has made his mind up about Hillis and that’s what it is. That’s what concerns me most about McD, he has a lot of growing up to do in his HC job, but a lot of it has to do that he needs to change how he approaches many things, players, media, game situations, but as I just said grown men don’t change. How many women have tried changing their man? Not with very good results I’m afraid. We are what we are and might be able to change 10 to 20 % of our overall personality, but that’s it, and I’m a bit concerned that it might not be enough to turn McD around, but one more year will tell me all I need to know. As I said in an earlier post, with all the changes that he is doing to his coaching staff again this year to insure that he can get things done his way has shortened his leash on the time he will be given to succeed here, IMO. I originally thought it should be three years, but now that he seems to being close to have it all going exactly his way, a Pees hiring would cement that, I think in two years we will know every thing we need to know. And until then I am pulling 100% for him.

  23. florio's_mom says:

I can see us taking a WR in the second round.

Brandon LaFell is a great option. He was owning Haden(Who is supposed to go in the top ten this year.) when they LSU played Florida.

he has a terrible QB in lee, but could do great here.

  24. rayjr26 says:

cody, i dont think the zone blocking had anything to do with the lack of play time for hillis. as bay said, most of the time we were tryin to run a power scheme anyway! especially the 2nd half of the year. there is something between them that has kept hillis on the sidelines IMO. maybe it has to do with hillis bein a Shanny guy. from what ive seen thus far McD pretty much has ZERO tolerance for the Shanny players. Cutler, Marshall, Hillis….. that list could go on and on im sure! lol just my cents!

  25. baylinorcrush says:

The post is now reporting that McD is about to hire a guy named Wylie, from the Canadian football league to be our new O line coach and additionally they say Martindale is now the front runner for the DC position because Pees is balking at the job because of health concerned like I had mentioned in a previous post. I thought it was odd he wasn’t hired already. Bummer, this is not good news my friends, nothing about these two hires make me think that a lot of capable coaches are willing to come in Denver to grind it out with McD. No good news for today, I’m afraid. I’m now going to step off, to give all the malcontents here the room they need to dish it out at the organization once again, just like after the Nolan firing. I’m sure you won’t let me down. LOL.

  26. baddbehl says:

i think we need a qb. lafeaver central mich.

  27. baylinorcrush says:

    Bob Wylie resume:

2009 Offensive Line Coach Saskatchewan Roughriders
2007 Offensive Line Coach Winnipeg Blue Bombers
    2005-06 Offensive Line Coach Syracuse
2004 Offensive Line Coach Arizona Cardinals
1999-2003 Offensive Line Coach Chicago Bears
1997-98 Tight Ends Coach Cincinnati Bengals
1996 Offensive Line Coach University of Cincinnati
1992-95 Offensive Line Coach Tampa Bay Buccaneers
1990-91 Tight Ends Coach New York Jets
1988-89 Offensive Line Coach Colorado State
    1985-87 Offensive Coordinator Ohio University
1983-84 Offensive Line Coach Holy Cross
1980-82 Offensive Line Coach Brown University

  28. brian_schneider says:

The Patriots are probably low balling us since McD wants Pees and the Patirots don’t want Pees to come to Denver and totally dominate them.

  29. florio's_mom says:

    baddbehl-

Your right. It was nolan that called that play Brandon scored on against the Cowboys. He also decided to kick the field goal in overtime to beat the pats. And don’t forget he drew up the hook and ladder to stokley.

  30. brian_schneider says:

Why did they remove baddehl’s comment about Nolan?

  31. florio's_mom says:

cuz he said something negative about mcd.

  32. brian_schneider says:

Umm haven’t we all said something negative about him on here?

  33. florio's_mom says:

    name calling i guess.

  34. rayjr26 says:

oh no! i dont have anything against martindale, but i really hope they dont go that direction! if pees is unavailable i hope they keep looking and find someone with a bit more experience as a DC, not to mention the 3-4 scheme. not sure what martindales 3-4 experience consists so if im way off then someone feel free to correct me! and ya bay, when i heard about getting that O line coach from the canada league i was not that impressed. word is that he will be sharing the role with our TE’s coach i believe, which has me very confused! “ok, you take the right side of the line and i will take the left. Sound good?” lol how is that going to work? i say stop rushing and find someone that really impresses! dont impulse buy just to fill a void. again, my 2 cents

  35. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

    florio,

I agree with you on Lafell. I am an LSU alum so I follow them dearly. The only downside to Lafell is he has a tendency to drop passes but a good WR coach could help with that. Also, Lee was not their QB this year it was Jefferson who isnt a great QB either. I think if Lafell has a good senior bowl/combine he could move up to round 1.

  36. brian_schneider says:

I think that having the TE coach help with the offensive line coach isn’t a bad thing. McD likes TEs that can block and catch, but mainly block. Having the the TE coach in on what the o-line is trying to do could potentially help out with the blocking scheme. That way the entire o-line TE’s included can perform as an entire unit. Just my opinion.

  37. florio's_mom says:

lol my bad. I thought lee was still there QB. He has potential. He is big too. 6’2 220ish. He has a playmaking ability to him. Most underrated WR in the draft for sure.

  38. sndvl says:

So a canadian coach? From the CFL! Are you kidding me? I knew this would happen. No coach is going to want to come in here and take orders from McD. Why hasn’t Pees inked his name yet? Could it be he is 30 years older and will NOT take orders? May as well dig up some old NFL Europe coaches. And get a soccer coach from South America to coach the kickers.
Marshall lost favor with McD when he shoved his 1st round gem. Hillis lost favor, not because he is a Shanny guy, but a fan favorite! And didnt want the heat when, not if, when Hillis proved KM was a wasted pick. Im not knocking KM, he has great potential, but Hillis is a bruiser.
Grrrr….no matter how hard I try to let this thing go, I find myself blurting Fire him. Guess its all these damn bears fans, laughing at our debacle.

  39. sndvl says:

Sorry, I apologize for the profanity. Not my style. Just tired after coming off a 20 hour shift, dealing with the Bears fans. I guess when I tried to defend Orton, and his play being better than the Franchise- The comeback came as ” Well the stats are padded when you have Marshall catching the ball, how many TD’s did he have? 21 catches a game! Heck even Jamarcus would have decent numbers with BMarsh”. 10 touchdowns, half of Orton’s total. Guess he made a valid point. damn bears fans

  40. brian_schneider says:

First of all Pees hasn’t signed because he’s still comtemplating retirement due to his health issues. He was thinking of doing that before McD even asked him to come to Denver. So it’s not a matter of him not wanting to work under McD.
What’s wrong with the CFL? Knowing something about how to coach an offensive line and what type of scheme McD wants doesn’t have a anything to do with being from the CFL? He’s had prior experience with the NFL and college in the US.
Don’t worry about the stupid Bears fans, we’ll still have the last laugh when Cutler doesn’t pan out.

  41. sndvl says:

some smell the roses, some smell the crap.

  42. brian_schneider says:

Sometimes ya gotta sift through the crap to get to the roses.

  43. sndvl says:

Ah, it is what it is. I mean he left the NFL for what reason? More money? Opportunity? Loyalty?

  44. sndvl says:

Hear that? The ticking? Its the clock McD!

  45. brian_schneider says:

I must have mis-understood your last comment. I thought you were commenting about being optomistic vs. pesimistic.

  46. sndvl says:

I was. It wasn’t an insult or anything. I was optomistic. But since the Oakland game, Its hard not to be pessimistic. Its all objective. I am trying to find something good in it (roses), but nothing good has come of it (crap)

  47. broncofanlvnm says:

    brian,
Where did you hear that Pees has health issues? I read his statement to the Pats and he said he was leaving to explore other opportunities. That didn’t sound like he was ill to me. I hope he’s not.

  48. baylinorcrush says:

As I posted above, it is due to health issues, at least that’s what the D.P. reported .

  49. brian_schneider says:

sndvl: Its ok, no offense takin’. I just though I may have mis-understood your comment.

  50. sndvl says:

I am usually the eternal optimist. But everything I have pointed out has been objective. Not subjective, like McD has potential to be a good coach. Where has he shown that. Aside from the 6-0 start? This is a results based league. And I don’t buy his team mentality, which resulted in the benchings. Look, every team has the team concept mentality. 0-16 Detroit, 1-15 St.Louis. They had potential too.
Coaches want out, players want out, we even have so called fans pulling out. Where is the potential in that?
