Coaching moves & this weeks picks!!

January 19th, 2010 - 9:47am by mark_cooper

Congrats to Coaches Dennison, Nolan and Turner. It’s part of the game. I like how the press and everyone jumps to conclusions and wants to point a finger for a coaching change and make a big deal out of it. That’s coaching. One of the main reasons I didn’t go into coaching after football. Someone else is in control of your destiny. Personal choice, that’s all.

Coach Turner is working his way to a head job and deservedly so as the associate head coach in Washington. Rick Dennison and Gary Kubiak go way back to the days we all played together here in the 80′s and he’ll be Gary’s offensive coordinator….kinda figured that was coming. I also think Rick will be a head coach at some point too. Smart guy. Played against him.

Coach Nolan….difference of approach than the head coach? Maybe, but it’s Coach McDaniels Team. He makes the calls and has to live and die by them. The NFL (Not For Long) League is not very forgiving for players and coaches. I run a business like a team, if I can upgrade my staff or have someone that’s not on the same page, you have to make a change.

The NFL is worse. You win or you get fired, traded or cut. (been there done that) Dan Reeves and I didn’t see things the same way and I asked to be cut or traded. Tampa was where I landed. Look at all the head coaching changes already. Tougher business than you’d think. It’s easy to second guess folks, but when you’re in the head coaches seat…it’s always hot. I say, CONGRATS and good luck to each of them. Thanks for your time here. Each has a lot to offer under the right scenario for them.

THIS WEEKS PICKS:
VIKES AND THE OLE MAN FARVE OVER THE SAINTS
COLTS OVER THE JETS

Those are my picks. Vike’s pick is from the heart and the others a professional pick.

This is from the Boston Globe a few days ago when he left the Pats, if you don’t call that health issues, I don’t know what is:

Pees also had health concerns in the last year. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer last summer and underwent surgery for it. A short time later, a blood clot was discovered in his leg.

And in the midst of the regular-season finale against the Texans, Pees was taken to an emergency room at a Houston hospital as he suffered bronchial spasms, which mimicked symptoms of a heart attack.

  2. brian_schneider says:

If he comes here he would run the risk of heart problems just like the rest of Broncos Country this past season. LOL!!!

I’m sorry, that’s not funny. That’s why I’d like to talk to everyone about heart disease awareness….heart disease is a problem…now you’re all aware.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

However, he is maybe using it as an excuse to turn McD down, because he said when he left the Pats, he wasn’t sure if this meant retirement or not, so he had not totally given up on the idea of coaching somewhere else. One thing seems clear, Martindale is the front runner now, so he must be out, check out the D.P..

  4. baylinorcrush says:

    Quick recovery, brian…

  5. sndvl says:

    Brian, now THAT was funny!

  6. sndvl says:

So let me see if i have this straight. McD will be head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator? Did Shannahan even have that much control his second year?

  7. baylinorcrush says:

I’m frankly more stunned at getting a CFL O line coach than Pees not getting in, not a good sign that we couldn’t bring in someone with higher ranks. So far, we let go of three respectable coaches, Turner, Dennison and Nolan, for replacement we sign a guy from the Bills where the entire staff was fired, a guy from the CFL who is just about signed and we might promote our linebacker coach to DC. Not exactly an upgrade from where I’m standing. Maybe we’ll be stunned positively by the pick to replace Martindale at the LB coaching position, LOL.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

sndvl, and you thought you were positive!!! LOL. I showed you positive… LMAO.

  9. sndvl says:

stunned isnt exactly the word I would have used, but Im not trying to get censored or banned from this blog

  10. sndvl says:

Um, all I can say is we are definitely in a rebuilding year

  11. baylinorcrush says:

The key in this business is to keep it light, man, if I took myself too seriously, I’d be joining Pees in critical care in a heart beat, no pun intended. You have to have a sense of humor to get through all that, that’s the key ingredient.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

But seriously, man, it’s not funny. LOL.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

I’m laughing so hard, I’m crying, it must be a nervous reaction…

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Excellent, did you notice Robin is wearing Hillis #?

  15. sndvl says:

    You know it!

  16. sndvl says:

As for the matter of LB coach, please bring in Romanowski.

  17. broncofanlvnm says:

Thanks for the info baylinorcrush. Sorry if you had to repeat yourself. I haven’t been reading a lot of the blogs lately due to starting to work again. I guess I have a lot to catch up on.

  18. rayjr26 says:

i dont wana say we are in a rebuilding year. surely not! its more like a labotomy year. you know, separate the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain. it supposedly fixes all sorts of problems! possibly even destroying short term memory which would explain how McD expects us to forget ALL THE BONEHEAD MOVES HE HAS MADE SINCE HE GOT HERE!someone needs to tell him to calm down and wait a bit! i find it hard to believe that we cant find SOMEONE more qualified to run our entire defense, and O line as well! unless people really are just that scared of working with him in which case i would have to consider him a bully! i HATE bullies!! :)

  19. broncofanlvnm says:

I for one want to try and stay optimistic still and say lets give this guy another year to see what he can do. But this is getting more difficult all the time. Lets see. Maybe he does really have a good plan to rebuild this franchise. (Or maybe he does have that “little man” complex and compensates for his small stature by bullying others because he can.)

  20. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

If Martindale moves to DC cant we just move Roman Phifer to LB Coach? Isnt he the asst LB Coach?

  21. baylinorcrush says:

broncofanlvnm, no need for the apology, but I appreciate it. I do end up having to repeat myself most of the time and to a lot of bloggers, but that’s because no one can keep up with the high volume of my posts, no way, no how anyone would have that much free time on their hands. LOL.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

And by the way, this is NOT a rebuilding year, the first year was, the second year is the “get it right year” if you want to have a third year. LOL.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Funny how no one really cares to go to the new blog, it feels as if this is more important than talking about the championship games, true Bronco fan website, I tell you.

  24. rayjr26 says:

well to be honest bay, once the broncos season is over i generally dont watch much football… my hearts just not in it i guess! i may watch the superbowl but thats about it!

  25. baylinorcrush says:

I get you, however I do watch every single playoff games each year no matter what, I guess I like seeing what we are up against, not exactly reconforting right now, there are some pretty darn good teams out there this year, like these last 4, man would we get whipped…

  26. rayjr26 says:

im not so sure! we always seemed to play to the level of our opponents. if it was a bad team, then we played bad! if it was a good team then we played good! but for the record i dont totally go off the grid after the broncos season is over! i will check in on the games but they just dont really hold that much interest for me!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Colts and Philadelphia, all these were good teams and we lost to everyone of them, no matter how we played them… The last game we won against a good team was October 11 against the Pats. I’m just telling it as I see it, we might of won to one of these playoff teams if we had played them in the first six weeks of the season, but now they would all just eat our lunch. Sorry, but I’m convinced of it.

    BEST QUOTE all year. nice!!

    As one famous archeologist said:
“It’s not the years, honey, it’s the mileage.”

    Hits home a little.

HOMETEAM007, Ice fishing spots??…….ready…………..The Floridia Keys or the Bahamas………:o) sorry had to go there. I know exactly NOTHING about ice fishing, but could be taught….very coachable….you got any?

Headed to Tim Wakefields celebrity golf tournament in Melbourne next week and will go fish Mosquito Lagoon for redfish the day before with some of his big sponsors. Great quick trip. Fish & golf. hmmmm!! Played in the wrong era or I could do that every day. :o )

On speculation on next years team and season………….exactly speculation…I don’t get to caught up in all the “what if’s” honestly. I take what I see and what’s happening and try to anaylize it as I see or saw it as a player….tough to project…..or really guess.

You guys headed way off into next year here on the blog and it’s fun to listen to but I don’t get that far out this early. But since you have.

Pick the three UFA that you would love to see here next year. A lot of comments were made, SO, who’s your three top picks….keeping in mind the salary cap to some degree. A lot of you have more insight than I do and study this a more than I do……..honestly.

I don’t usually comment until I’ve seen it happen. Keeps my life simpler :o )

    O.K. Top 3 UFA??

  29. denverbro89 says:

Nolan should be our Head Coach and Mcd should of been demoted to O coordinator that’s the honest truth, Nolan is more mature and professional, were bout to lose our best offensive weapon because of childish antics. That’s not how you handle the situation with Marshall or Sheffler, both who are or were valuable to the team. Nolan had more success than Mcd, our offense was already good, it actually under performed statistically, our defense show great improvement but fell of the 2nd half of the season, I blame that on the coach trying to do to much instead of rolling with what was working.

  30. denverbro89 says:

looking at the stats…Hillis had 300+ yards two seasons ago, and only had 50 last season. Ryan Torain had about the same yards in one game that Lamont Jordan gained all year. Royal numbers decreased dramatically. Our O line gave up more sacks this year, yet we threw a lot less passes. Sheffler(who I believe can be as good as Jason Witten) barely played over Graham, no discredit to Graham but he is a blocking TE, he has pretty good hands but he doesn’t stretch the field like Sheffler or a very missed Nate Jackson.

  31. denverbro89 says:

And as far as the draft goes, we called Shannahan a Bust when it came to his defensive picks, But I don’t remember Robert Ayers doing too much, We could of had Mauluga I’m never letting that one go. Or Brian Orakpo Moreno was a good pick though along with Mcbath and Alphonso Smith, Bruton is good special teams player, Quinn was a head scratcher, and Brandstater looked good in preseason, maybe he moves up to #2 next season. But We really need defensive players, I wouldn’t be mad if we drafted all defense this year, Bailey, Goodman, Hill, and Dawkins aren’t getting any younger we need to start getting players to take their spots.
