Championship Quote — Guess Who

March 24th, 2009 - 3:20pm by mark_cooper

Here’s a great quote and no cheating before you get the answer. You have to read to the bottom to get the answer. Guess the man and the sport … you’ll be pleasantly surprised, then see if you guessed correctly.

QUOTE:
“The game always gave me far more than I ever gave it . The game was here long before I was, and will be here long after I’m gone. The only thing I hope I did was never put in question my love for the game, or my passion to be counted on when it mattered most. I did everything I could to win every time I was handed the ball.”

Mondono, on your hypothetically question, the right tackle being the backside guy and moving a left tackle to right tackle spot if needed. Typically very tough to do. Very few guys can make the transition because of the footwork and handwork. Good question though. Clady, as talented as he is, probably could do it if needed — he’s a Hall of Fame type player.

It’s also tough for the pass rusher to make the change because of the lean they are use to on the outside but easier for a defender to make the change versus the O-lineman. I like our guys the way they stack up and wouldn’t change unless I had to.

I saw a few guys change rush sides a few times like Howie, Doleman, Bruce Smith and Reggie White and really only thought Reggie and Bruce were as effective from both sides.

I was able to play every spot on the line during my career but that takes some brains due to blocking schemes and defenses and ability which I had but was an average player that could always get the job done but nowhere near Clady’s level. In Houston one year I started at right guard, then played every spot on the line except center for various reasons during the game and got a game ball for it. Fun stuff but mentally draining as the footwork/handwork is so different and doing it in the heat of the battle was a challenge, especially when you hadn’t been at one of the other spots in while.

O.K., we’re leaving the Cutler thing alone and let’s see if it works itself out, which it very well could and no sense worring about something that may take care of itself.

I’m not going to read all the what if and the articles that the MEDIA is trying to dig up on what happen when/where/who and how. I don’t care for now until we have something concrete to work with.

Tune in to AM1510 on Thursday at 12-noon-1:00 and Gil Whiteley and I will have some fun. You can also listen to it on the internet at www.milehighsports.com.

ANSWER: Curt Schilling

Well, I never would’ve guessed who’s quote that was but… my guess would be Curt Schilling. Oh looky… I got it right, haha!!! :p

So just to say I don’t pay any attention to the speculation going on about the Cutler issue or any issue for that matter. Which explains how agonizing its been for me to avoid going on to nfl.com for almost a month now just b/c I know if I go on there, that story and whatever they’ve come up with will be splattered all over that website. I won’t go on there til this whole thing is resolved the way it should be.

So looks like I just defeated the purpose of this new blog… oops! Anyway, Clady could probably get away with playing multiple positions on the O-line and do it effectively, he’s got that much talent and potential. Can’t wait to see him again this next season and beyond. He was incredible for Cutler last year!!

    With faith…

  2. Broncs55 says:

I was thinking it was Mondono - but Curt Schilling was my 2nd choice!

  3. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Coop I love what you are saying!! I am seriously so sick of all the name games with the whole ordeal, I am sick of the annonymous sources! I think a lot of that is paid by teams to raise havock because they want a shot at the player, or like someone said on Rice’s blog, They want to tear down a team they see as competition!
Either way we look at it, it will work out! The question as to who it works out for is based on which side you are on and the outcome you want!

Curt Schilling eh? I knew it was something with baseball, but was thinking Johnson! Really the great players for each sport all have great sayings, but it seems baseball is normally a more heartfelt quote for the sport!
    i.e.
Gretsky said: You’ll miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!
Jordan said: I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
Theismann said: Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.
Gallagher said: There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit.
Just to name one from each sport. I’m not saying the love for the game isn’t there in every sport, just think that the greats in baseball center their quotes more around love of the game. Maybe it’s cuz they have the least success rate in their sport, or maybe cuz most of them are old and think more deeply?
I kinda messed up the purpose of the blog too, sorry Coop, I really do love the idea of it though. Promise to keep it from he on!
Cooper said: Clady, as talented as he is, probably could do it if needed — he’s a Hall of Fame type player.
I will go with what you said Sir! I know on madden 09 at first he was like a 78, now with the updates he is 91 over all! Hope he gets a pro bowl bid the next two seasons! Go to florida and hawaii baby!
Wanna go to the islands with me football babe? :D

  4. 2champ4pickSIX says:

here on is what i meant, not he on! gotta fix it before my english teacher does! lol

  5. 07elway says:

Those are some really good quotes, my stud. Good reading baby!! ;) Seems like you might know me too well, you knew I’d catch that little typo of yours. I cracked up when I scrolled down too early and read your second comment then I read where the mistake was and I still can’t stop laughing. So now I’m your english teacher eh? Don’t know about that but I could certainly dress up like one for ya! (Kisses)

Do I want to go to the islands with you? Gee I don’t know. I’ve only wanted to go to Hawaii all my life… but with you, ABSOLUTELY!!! But I warned you once before, if I ever make it to see Hawaii I might never come back! Already been to Florida but I’ll go again especially with you. ;)

  6. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Yes, Coop. You know Ryan Clady can play either tackle position based on his overall excellence. Thanks for having some brains and telling everyone not to worry about the “Cutler saga.” The jackass Charger, Raider and Chief fans have had a field day with our “predicament.” Well, they should get their laughs in while they can because we’ll crush them all! GO BRONCOS!!!

  7. #80fan says:

I got the question right. I guess watching a lot of ESPN does have its advantages from time to time.

  8. Thornyissue says:

I’m still ticked at you for fueling the fire at the roast, Coop. But I was out of line slighting your career. You were a great player and were a big part of the franchise and it’s success. However, if you came up to Alaska, I’d outfish you all day long (no doubt). Here’s to a great season with Josh AND Jay. I’ll follow your example and back off, letting things run their course since I certainly can’t change them. Outta here. Go Broncos.

“Catch and release is NOT a preferred football technique.”

  9. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Oh man babe you totally read my mind and beat me to the punch! Love it when you get kinky! As for the islands, you know when I was there last I learned of the Awa plant, native to the islands. Basically a natural tranquilizer, I think I could get you back off the island with me! If I go with you, I’m not coming home without ya!
Sorry to distract from the subject not at hand Coop, you know how it is when you get a glimpse of a beatuful one biting in clear water! You gotta stay on top of it or else it steals your bait and leaves you wondering what lure to use for another shot!
Well maybe you don’t, you have the whole NFL thing going for ya, bet its like shooting fish in a barrell huh?
Either way new subject……. What is the latest with B Marsh? I hope the commish understands what happened fully and makes a fair judgement, not just an example of fool me once fool me twice! Looking forward to the ROYALMARSHALL treatment we will inflict next year with a defense as well!

  10. beefdirkus says:

    Coop,
Not to be off the football topic but we are entering baseball season. Now the Curt Schilling retired. Do you think he will make it to the hall of fame? I think he will but not first ballot. I think there are some pitchers ahead of him - ie Burt Blyleven.
Go Rockies (and Twins, I live in the Twin Cities area)

  11. 47rocksurworld says:

Heh Coop, what is your take on the new rules for next year. I can understand why they are changing the ruling for the Qb’s but it seems like they might be going a little to far. The Tom Brady and Carson Palmer injuries, seem to be the driving force for these restrictions. If I am correctly remembering the Palmer hit it seemed to be more of an illegal hit. While the Brady hit seemed to be a **** happens! Everyone else gets a lot less protection than the QB, but I am not sure they need to put skirts on just yet? It seems to me the more you try to narrow the window of the Rule the more you open it up to interpretation by the individual official. It is impossible to make everyone see the call only one way, the factor of the human element will always be there.

  12. George Bush says:

One of my favourite quotes is this:-

“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I’m very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”

  13. 15themarshall15 says:

love the story but you were wrong about one thing. I dont think your viewed as just a normal lineman, from what i remember you were a tough, versitle, hardworking, and very devoted player. you should give youself more credit you were a key piece of then line and a great player.

  14. thundersrevenge says:

Yeah Coop, gotta agree with 15themarshall 15.

I think Elway owes you at least a six-pack!

  15. monodono says:

Thanks COOP for the post and answering my hypothetical question.
I really just asked it to shed some light on the job I think Ryan Harris did last year. He kinda got lost in the bigger story of what a great job Ryan Clady and Casey Weigman did last year. By the way does anyone know if Casey got the raise He deserved? I know they were supposed to talk about it at The Pro Bowl but I never heard a conclusion. I also would like to give props to Big Ben Hamilton and Chris Kuper for a job well done last year, and I hope they ALL have another great year in 09!

Broncs55, You were right Curt stole it from Mondono.

2champ4pickSIX, yep we all needed a break and you two love birds (07elway) are pretty funny. Set the hook!!!!

BradJamesBroncoFan, were you been? Clady reminds me of Paul Gruber and Zim…he just covers guys up.

#80fan, really…good job. I’m a big fan of quotes, because they really relate outside sports when you think about some of them.

Thornyissue, if you knew me better, you’d have laughed with me. I don’t take myself or anyone else very seriously. I work hard, play hard and try to laugh a lot because life’s to short and I’ve learned a lot in my young, 49 years. Life’s tough enough to get to caught up in things you have no control over and football is a sport. Not life. Life can be much tougher. That’s one of the reasons I give back where I can to charities.

I had a good career and I’m very proud of it BUT I like to have fun with it because there were a lot of great athletes out there and I was blessed. BUT 2, I’d be glad to go down trying to outfish you on your home waters :o) Where are you in Alaska? I watch Larry Csonka’s program almost every weekend when I’m around.

bronco-blaze, on Brandon? last I heard it was in the hands of the league so you know they’ll wait until right before the season…..hopefully not.

Mondono, good stuff as always and I’ll tell Curt to stop that……he’s a certain HOF’er and the first ballot thing drives me crazy, that’s another weird topic. Casey got the money he was after and rightly so and I’m glad he’s back.

On the guys lost at sea. Somethings still not right about that for me. I’ve read a couple reports in different magazines and online and I just have a wierd feeling about the whole thing…just tooo many bad decisions. God bless them and their families…how’s our girl (grand daughter) doing…need a little update and so does the crew….right crew?

Funny you talk about pulling, because that was my favorite part of the game. We ran the Green Bay sweep here with Dan and both guards pulled and we had a few G-leads (which means the gurad kicked out on the corner and the full back takes the last man on the line of scrimmage. We even pulled both guard and tackle called OT or some folks heard it as Counter-Tray. It also eats up the clock and wears down the d-line because we’d cut everybody we could cut to get them on the ground. FUN STUFF!!! Your quote: “Time of Possession”

Funny how the line play has changed because we had a great inside trapping game we picked up from Pittsburgh and we got ole Sammy Winder 1000 yards one year and the majority of it was between the tackles. His longest run from scrimmage was about 34 yards….that’s doing it the hard way. He was tough as nails.

  26. 07elway says:

Oh my word, I totally forgot those comments were on here… wow, that did make for some good laughs. Glad we could make you smile Coop. Definitely a distraction from all the other drama going on in Broncoland. And I had to cheat on that question… like I said, I never would’ve guessed the answer. 38. clapham says:

Y’all are crazy, JC is a way more talented quarterback than Orton can even imagine being. Anyone who sees it differently is obviously not being objectionable. This entire ordeal makes the new coach the owner and the organization look bush league. Crybaby or not, you don’t trade away a high quality quarterback in the prime of his career. Good quarterbacks are extremely rare and very difficult to find, when you do acquire such talent you check your ego at the door and make the player happy in order to keep him on the team. Why do you (wanagi) say crybaby anyways b/c his feelings were hurt by the trade talks, so were Elway’s back in the day, glad you nay sayers weren’t around saying trade him? However, I don’t condone such childish behavior it honestly makes me sick, but I am able to realize that all these pampered professional athletes are really the same - filled with a sense of entitlement, with a bit of a god complex. The draft picks we got are nice, but draft picks are gambles b/c ultimately they equate to unproven players. So to say we came out on top suggest that you don’t have a clue. In order to make such statements we will have to see how those draft picks contribute to the Broncos in the future. Right now I feel that we did not come out on top: lose a pro bowl quarterback for Orton (who truly has the talent of a solid back up) and a couple of college kids who have yet to prove they can even play in the NFL. Admittedly, as a JC fan I am having a difficult time be objectionable, but time will tell who comes out on top, my money is on the proven talent.

Stefan Fatsis on the Broncos and Jay Cutler.

    http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/stefan-fatsis-on-jay-cutler/

Stefan Fatsis is the author of A Few Seconds of Panic, about his summer as a placekicker for the Denver Broncos and life in the modern NFL. He is a sports commentator for National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” and a contributor to the New York Times and other publications.

    He says
“I met Cutler when he was the first-round draft choice in 2006 who was expected to ride the bench for a couple of years behind Jake Plummer and then lead Denver for a decade or more. The new Elway! Finally! But Cutler is virtually absent from my book. That’s because he was uncompelling journalistically and off-putting personally. I sought out players who thought deeply and were interested in explaining the physical and emotional realities of playing in the NFL. That wasn’t Cutler. His demeanor often was that of a bored, eye-rolling teenage girl, with a dash of smugness for good measure. Since then, I’ve received unflattering reports about his behavior and indifferent-to-negative ones about his relationship with his teammates.”

  42. George Bush says:

If it makes you feel better then you can slag off Jay but I think the dye was cast as soon as Bowlen signed McDaniels. Once he missed out on Cassels everbody knew, particularly Cutler, that McD wanted a different kind of QB. The rest has been damage limitation saying that Jay was their QB when all along finding out what other deals were available.

Bowlen and McDaniels cast the first stones so blaming Jay is neither logical or correct.

Now it is all in the past, and we still do not know what Coop thinks.

I didn’t get back until 5:30AM this morning with a tough/tough delay out of Miami, so I’m catching up at the office and on files as you can imagine. I had a few properties go under contract while away.

Stay tuned and I’ll post after reading a few articles you all sent and one I read today from a Chicago reporter that wasn’t very flattering for our prior QB.

Sorry, but I’m glad he’s gone and we can move on. I know some of you don’t like that, but you’d be surprised at the concensus on the street about him. All weekend at the tournament, I was asked about the trade and the majority had their own apionions of Jay and they weren’t nice.

I’ll post tomorrow, so we can chat about it and move on. I’m still catching up.

what i see in the draft is one of each. we have 2 wks to judge what we have, as to what we need. and then mac will pick what we need worst, d-line, l/b or d/b. right now he reallydoesn’t know how all the new players will work out (he hopes good). the reason i say this is b/c of the 3-4 or 4-3. if we are a player or two short to complete the change he will go hard and heavy on that spot.
just looking at the roster the way it stands we really have no pressing need for anything. oh, ya it would be good to get RAJI but he will be gone. so i think Mac will take the best on the board.
why are ppl asking for a CENTER and R/Bs? we have lighenstine (or something like that) and our r/b are as good as they come.
we have 10 picks. i figure we take 2 of each D/T, D/E, L/B, C/B, and S. and only if some great person falls way down should we alter. BUT it will be hard for a rookie to make the roster, i really do like our 1 amd 2 year men we have, even tho they need to be tested more.
then next year go after what ever Q/B mac thinks likes. I happen to like McCoy, but i live in Texas

monodono, still praying for her and am glad to hear she is gaining weight.
