Carolina Proves too Tough

December 16th, 2008 - 8:56am by mark_cooper

You have to admit, the Panthers are a force to be reckoned with. It was like a playoff game. I mentioned it before the game and while watching it there were highs and lows.

I’m not making excuses but I have to say something I said last year, “I love these guys and the way they’re playing but were still not there.” Injuries in this league make good teams mediocre fast. Don’t get me wrong, we have a real good team, but when you stack us up against the Playoff teams that don’t/haven’t had the injuries we’ve had, it shows.

I’ll say it again turnovers kill. You can’t compete in this league turning the ball over. Tough loss but great learning experience and at 8-6 we’ve come a long way as a young team. It’s funny that each week we’re not sure which team is showing up and that has a lot to do with age and experience……takes time unfortunately.

I still like us in the Playoffs but we’ll need everyone back and a game plan with a running attack and I’m not sure who will provide it just yet. The bright side is we have a group of guys out there battling and the futures real bright.

On a side not, I’m out of the country (remote area) next week so may not get a shot to blog after Buffalo. I’ll try but hang in there with me. When I get back I’ll jump back at it.

Two to go and then anything can happen. Get ‘em boys!!!

I don’t think there’s any shame in admitting that Carolina was just the better team that day. It builds character!

Enjoy your trip! Are you going fishing, or maybe an elk hunt with Rulon Jones? Have a great time.

Here’s to an improved effort against the Bills!

Hey Coop!! This one paragraph you wrote sums it all up, then including the obvious - turnovers DO kill and brutally so…

“I’m not making excuses but I have to say something I said last year, “I love these guys and the way they’re playing but were still not there.” Injuries in this league make good teams mediocre fast. Two things have plagued us pretty much all season - Injuries and Turnovers. There’s not much we can do to stop injuries, those things happen to the best of players but the turnovers can be controlled. Some of them you just don’t see coming but that’s no excuse, the QB and his receivers should be in solid communication and make those plays that need to be made. This is a young team and whether you like to hear it or not, or admit it or not, that is a big part of some of our problems. There’s a huge difference transitioning from college ball to the Pros. These rookies are learning that and seeing that. They won’t be well established till a couple season into this league going up against some of the best of the best that are still around in the NFL. There are still alot of veteran players in this league that have gotten used to how this league is run and have established themselves.

I’m not trying to make any excuses for our team but the youth on this team is a factor to some of the mediocracy we’ve seen along with they constantly switch from playing as a TEAM to whatever it is they did at Carolina and some other games. They didn’t play as a team but they weren’t completely out of touch with each other - I saw them trying to get things done but Carolina’s defense was just a total mismatch with our offense.

And Al Wilson 4 Mayor - your prize will probably come next week when we get our division and a playoff spot!!! And there is no shame in admitting Carolina was the better team, its hard for me to say that but like I’ve said before, its true. They came out to win and play and that’s exactly what they did. I definitely think we’ll be a whole new team against the Buffs. I think after this last game, this team has been hit in the face even more with what is at stake and if we don’t make ourselves the AFC West division Champs by next Sunday, its almost certain it won’t happen b/c we’ll only have one game left against a huge rivalry team that won’t just let us run all over them in their house!!

Well, enjoy your trip Coop! Buy me a souvenir?? ;) Have faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

    COOP,

    Good to see you’re still blogging, I was’nt sure. It’s a good tactick to let the steam blow off so you don’t have to listen to the crying ;-}
Coop your right Carolina was the better team and actually it does’nt hurt me that much to say it. Personally I really didnt care about the loss or win in this one as much as I cared about how the TEAM played. (of corse I want a win.) The truth is I would rather lose with dignity than watch them play so horribly.

As you might know from my past blogs Coop I’m a huge fan of Alex Gibbs and when he left he took with him something this TEAM has never been right without and each game it shows up more prominantly than the game before.(even in the wins). It’s in the Offensive scheme, I know there’s allot of people out ther that will vehemently disagree with me especially Mike Shanahan. It’s something I saw about two years after Alex left and I’ve seen it get worse over the years and if you were to look at the game books over the last five years you would see the pattern.
The Broncos pass the ball on first down way too much. Ya I know you’ve heard me time and time again say run the ball on first down the truth is if you look back at the years when Alex was with the Broncos thats exactly what they did! Now day’s the Broncos pass on first down 3/4 of the time just look at this week 9 run plays on first down to 17 pass plays on first down.(I know there is’nt a stat for this you have to manually count the plays but I now see the pattern in the game when I watch and it drives me nuts).

In the first two drives The Broncos had the panthers right were they wanted them 10 -0 they owned the TIME OF POSSESSION 9:07 - 5:53 they ran the ball four times on first down and passed five times on first down thats Ballance thats establishing the running game!

The third possession they called three pass plys in a row (the lateral pass to Scheffler for -1yrds is counted as a run in the books because it lost yardage, thats a pass) and then a draw on 3rd and 17 REALLY!? I ask Mike how is that establishing the run? THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END!

Shanahan said “we tried to establish the run and we could’nt” and I say look in the mirror sir. The O Coaches went on to call a lousy game which led to three 3&outs coupled with poor execution, turnovers, and penalties, and the root of it all is the incomplete pass on first down. It puts you in a bad position and sets nothing up.

I’m not saying don’t throw the ball on first down just keep it ballanced.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

    Good responses all.
I don’t think Carolina is a better team, but they sure played better than our Broncos that round. You mentioned, “a game plan with a running attack” is needed, that is a team effort. The O-Line needs to believe in the back field and work to create some holes. We don’t need to wait for a miracle HB to make that happen. It happens at practice, team meetings, the locker room and then the play calling. That is where I think we could have done much better..right on Monodono! We put up points early with a good game plan but didn’t adjust to their defensive adjustments. We can and will triumph over the Bills and in the playoffs. The Team (coaches included) needs to start believing in their own ability, get that early season swagger back and Dominate.
    Enjoy the time away Coop.

Ya I also think with Leatherhead Larson hurt we need real help at the Fullback position. Does anybody know what’s up with A. Pinnock? is he healthy? is he ready to play? Not haveing a fullback really limits the formations (Shotgun doesnt always work).

    Hey Coop,
well the game didn’t go the way i wanted it too and like i said last week, i was at the game. head to toe Orange and Blue with a ton of Panther fans surrounding me. i was excited to see us drive down on our first possession then after our field goal, (which i was nervous about being in the Prater danger zone). after that it got a bit ugly, we had sparks here and there but i never heard the end of it and even had a beer thrown at me.
the turnovers will always kill us so we have to keep ball control. we will rebound this week against the Bills and clinch this division. everyone is counting us out but once we get in we will be the most dangerous team in the playoffs. i’m hoping to see Indy come to our house. they have owned us in recent years but we have played them in thier dome. we will cool them down and send them back home.
I’m excited for this weekend and can’t wait to see the game. i loved seeing woody as safety and hoping that we release Manuel and Macree next year. this team will be fired up this week.
on another note, Monodono i agree with you as always, time of possession is key to the game, we need that running game, i was a bit surprised not to see Boyd out there but i’m guessing he hasn’t picked up on the game plan yet.
Keep the Faith fans and GO BRONCOS!!!
P.S. have fun on your vacation Coop!

BroncoOrdie0730, sorry to be the bringer of bad news The Broncos waived Boyd yesterday. I think that Mike see’s something special in Steve Baylark. I was also shocked to see the TIME OF POSSESSION was as close as it was. Glad you were there representin your a true fan.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  8. BroncoOrdie0730 says:

monodono, thanks for the heads up, haven’t had alot of time online to really check into things.
It’s always great to be at games and i’m used to being alone or one of the few in the stands being stationed in San Diego for 12 years. Was just great to be back at a game.
guess we’ll see what this Baylark kid can do, shanny knows RB’s thats for sure.
Can’t wait to close this one up against the Bills and lock the West, hope they don’t overlook this game and come with thier A game as i know they will.
    GO BRONCOS!!!

It’s always hard watching your team get blown out :(
I have to admit, I’m a little nervous about the Bills this weekend. They’ve dropped the last 7 games and we haven’t done that well against teams “getting off the mat”. I’m fairly confident we will lock up the West this weekend….just a little gun shy.

    Hey Coop,
What happened with the O line this past weekend? I had just been bragging about how well protected cutler had been all season and BAM he was on the grass every other play. Did I miss something, or did we just get outmatched?

  10. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

This was a disappointing game to say the least Coop but the Broncos are still in good shape. We should (emphasis on SHOULD) pound the Bills but to ascertain we do, it’s important to build a big early lead and take care of the football. GO BRONCOS!!!

  11. monodono says:

Hey thundersrevenge I can answer that. The Broncos did’nt run the ball on first down enough! You could answer just about every question about that game the same way or better yet they threw the ball to much on first down. Either way the O Coaches need to ballance thier game plan and control the game against the Bill’s or we will see a repeat.

I know I keep repeating myself, and I’m not crazy. I just hope someone in the O’s staff see’s this and takes a look at the gambooks of this whole season and can see the pattern I’ve described.(or it might actually drive me nuts). . . . allright I’ll stop.

I did see some good things on the field against Carolina, I saw 2 good ballanced drives in the first qtr. I saw R. Clady play another stellar game against one of the best. I saw J. Barrett play his heart out, and I have to say I liked seeing woodyard as a SS.

Now what I would like to see is A. Pinnock on the field. I would like to see T. Bell get the rock more, and J. Cutler actually sell a play action fake for a change and I mean SELL the fake! Come on Jay control those Linebackers and Safeties please. C. Kuper I hope you and R. Clady are ready to go THIS team NEEDS YOU.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  12. monodono says:

    Hey BroncoOrdie0730,
I just read The Broncos re-signed Herana-Daze Jones to the 53 man roster, and re-signed Cory Boyd to the practice squad, and then released Steve Baylark. I’ts a jungle out there. I thought Baylarks numbers in Collage were out standing, Mike keeps you on your toes.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  13. BroncoOrdie0730 says:

    Hey monodono,
you are right Shanny will keep you on your toes, not sure what he’s up too but i guess we will see, just hoping to take those bills apart this weekend.
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  14. monodono says:

They will have thier hands full with that Oline those guy’s are huge! Talk about a dangerous team, it’s like a poker player down on his chips, he could go all-in at any time. Did you see what they did to the jets last week? A fake punt, reverses, QB sneaks, end arounds ya just dont know.

I hope The Broncos O Coaches do a better job controlling the game.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  15. mark_cooper says:

Headed out, but I have to agree that the O-Line doesn’t block as effectively as a unit as they once may have under Alex. Some of that is steps (footwork) and youth and new faces playing with each other. It takes some timing with backs too, and we haven’t had a back…back there long enough get in the groove either. You’d be surprised how much more there is to a running game than a handoff.

Congrats to Cutler and Marshall though, great honor and worthy. I’m excited for them as young players to receive the honors so soon…and hopefully many to come.

On a side note I was shocked to hear they weren’t going to play Arena football this year. I always thought it was a great alternative to the NFL for folks…Oh well. Kinda like the USFL, WFL and others of the past.

I’ll try to Post after Buffalo…yep a little fishing and goofing off at a timeshare in Mexico. Beats this sub-zero stuff that this ole Miami boy has never cared for :o)
