Camp Opens

July 30th, 2007 - 12:24pm by mark_cooper

Every year when camp opens I get these odd feelings. When you played football for most of your life and had the opportunity to play in the NFL, July 4th was really your last holiday before camp opened. I remember thinking, “You better be in camp shape or camp could be torturous. Summer is over and it’s time to go to work.”

The smell of cut grass brings back the same feelings of early morning workouts and the competiton you faced on a dialy basis.

I’m as excited about the Broncos this year as I have been in many years. I think they really helped themselves in the draft and the offseason picking up some quality players that will help the defense improve.

I played around many great quarterbacks, Jim Kelly at the University of Miami, John Elway while here with the Broncos, Steve Deberg here in Denver and again in Tampa Bay, later in my career along with Vinny Testaverde. You have to be excited about Jay Cutler as he looks to me to fit into that catagory.

    Yardo,

All’s good here in Broncos Town. I hope you’re as excited as I am about the upcoming season. I’ve been selling real estate at Coldwell Banker since I retired here in town, you can find me at http://www.come2colorado.com.

Training camp, wow!!! does that bring back some memories of the old days of riding to practice on the back of Wood’s (Elway’s) scooter. Two-a-days were a little different back then…pretty much full pads all the time with 120 guys in camp. Hit and hit some more. I was born too early :o )

    What’s your prediction??

    Coop

I’m very excited too. I’m driving up to Denver this Friday to check out Saturday’s final camp practice.

Prediction: Cutler is going to emerge as a great QB. With the help he has around him he won’t be under pressure to carry the team. It’s going to be a fun season and I’m just glad it’s time to watch/play a little football.

    Yardo,

I agree, there’s a lot of talent out there so Cutler will have plenty of support if we can keep guys healthy. That’s always seems to be the trump card in the NFL these days.

Things have changed since my time and camps are shorter and the pre-season is right on top of you so injuries hurt guys in camp that may need to be seen.

Funny article the other day about the 300 pounders in the league these days. I remember playing against BIG Dave Butts with Washington, Dania Carter with the 49ers and Gary Dunn of the Steelers, those guys were a bisquit shy of 300 and loads in their days at just at or over 300. I think teams didn’t publish the (exact) weight because I know there were many other 300+ pounders out there.

    Hey TSG,

Nice website!! I’ll keep that one on my favorites list, you had a lot of good content for readers. This blogging is fun. You guys are the best fans in the world and it’s fun catching up. When we came back from Superbowl XXI and there was 300,000 fans to meet us, that says it all about the Denver community and the fans.

    Hey Coop,
Love the “oldschool” references! Keep writing and I’ll keep reading lots of fun getting your perspective on the NFL of today, man it’s alot different.

    KMA,

Old-days?? Yea, I guess I am old. Ha! Ha! All we had was NBC, CBS, ABC and Sports Illustrated when you think about it, that’s it. Now there’s hundreds of channels (including the NFL Channel) who’d have thought of that, and all the versions of ESPN and Fox channels and magazines that line the racks….kinda funny.

The players today live in a fish bowl and make the big bucks…and with that comes a new responsibility to the public and the fans. I applaud them to make as much as you can (while you can) as you can see, the injury report takes it’s toll.
