Baltimore Curse

October 11th, 2010 - 8:32am by mark_cooper

Baltimore’s always been a tough place to play for the Broncos going back to even my days when they were the Colts. Maybe it’s a curse because John Elway snubbed them. Yeah, that’s it. Let’s blame it on Elway. It’s a “CURSE” and there’s no way around it so let’s use that as our excuse. It has a lot of mystery an drama like the newspaper and gossip rags cling to. “THE CURSE.”

Okay, enough of that. It was kinda funny though. You have to have a sense of humor in the NFL, whether you’re a fan or a player, because when you’re a struggling team these types of games will happen and often more than once during a season.

I’ve seen it since pee-wee football and even with our young guys playing 11-year-old tackle football. It’s also a character builder. It’s life. Somebody has to lose every week. I’ve been on both ends of these types of games when you’re beat bad or totally blown out. Guess what, that’s life. You win some, you lose some, but you learn from every experience and get back up to fight again. That’s what makes a winner. Winners never quit and quitters never win. I know you’ve all heard that your entire life and maybe you never really slowed down long enough or really thought about what it means. Well after a game like that in Baltimore, re-read it. Makes a lot of sense. You get up, shake it off, go back to the drawing board and get after it or you’re a quitter. Quitters don’t make it to the NFL. If they sneak in, they get filtered out pretty quick. I promise. Your teammate can smell it a mile away

This team is not a quitter but needs some time to get it’s game together. No need to talk about T.O.P. or O-line or the D-line or special teams and point fingers and play the “blame game”. This is a young team and relatively inexperienced playing together with each other. Time on the field is the only thing that sure is this. Just like catching a lot of fish, time on the water…experience, playing together as a team, I could go on and on but no need with you guys because you know the drill. You see what I see. Maybe in a different context, but very similar.

Frustrating? Yeah, but so is life sometimes and you keep swinging, right? …Or maybe it is a CURSE? :o ) hee, hee.

BE A WINNER!
GO BRONCOS!!

Coop, the fishing analogy, zzzzzzzzzzz….. Inside joke, LOL.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, you do have the most polite way to say how bad we were, and couldn’t agree with you more when you call us a struggling team, we are who I thought we were.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

Funny thing you mention the curse because this year we have already had the Jacksonville curse, the Colts curse and now the Baltimore curse, as it is common knowledge we haven’t been able to beat any of these teams hardly at all for eions. That’s a heavy serving of curse games, LOL.

  4. sndvl says:

A curse. Yeah. That sounds about right. I see Brown got a chance. Much like last season when Hillis had his. So Moreno is injury plagued (still yet to achieve the century mark) Ayers is not dominant, DMT-injured yet again and Tebow is an afterthought. May as well toss Beadles, Phonz and Quinn (TE version) and we have us a “curse at drafting” on our hands!!!

  5. benbronco9 says:

What up??? Another day to digest it and I live in the bay with ALL the whiny no football knowledge fans of the 49ers who are a miraculous 0-5 in a playoff year. LMAO
Not that it holds any weight or bearing but there number one pick the franchise QB Alex smith first in the draft a few years back is Garbage. so all you TT fans just take note of how often these high priced first round picks son’t even pan out don’t put all your eggs in one basket just because we picked a QB in the first round. Look at colt Mcoy who in college was a far supirior Throwing QB to TT.
I know this is probably going to start a heated debate but in the long run ORton is playing like a pro QB and to run him and MCD out of town at the same time and then not wind up with a ligitamate NFL QB would be paralizing for many years to come and don’t think if you sit one of the top rated “princess’”that he will EVER play his heart out for your city again. Just saying.
What up Bay I’m ready to post my score sumthing with the JEts and sanchez in the 30 ies and the Broncos in the uhhh. LOL just a little humor to put down my frustration.

  6. Big D 44 says:

I didn’t post yeserday because I needed time to reflect and did not want to deal with all of the ‘doom and gloom” bloggers that always show up after a crushing loss.
This game really was a demorilizing defeat. They kicked our butts in every phase of the game. Coop is right, either the team learns from it, or they continue on a downward spiral. Personally, I put more of the blame on offense than I do on defense. The goal line stand in the beginning of the game was AWESOME. But we cannot rely on our D to do that all game without help from the Offense. As the game wore on our Defense wore out and the Ravens were able to run the ball on us with ease. Talk about getting a slice of humble pie. There were so many things wrong with this game that I have a difficult time presenting all of the areas that need to be fixed. I have no qualms with Ortons play but our running game makes me feel like vomiting.
One thing I am sure of, I do not like Bay Bay returining kick offs. He may be our most athletically gifted player, but is it really worth getting him injured returning kick offs. I also feel the same way about Eddie Royal. We should have other guys who are fast and tough to return punts and kick offs. WE need Bay Bay and Eddie healthy for the season. Let them make the big plays on offense and give someone else a chance to shine on special teams like Thomson (from Cal.) or Vaughn. AS BFE would say, this is just one mans opinion and that doesn’t mean a helluva lot.

Pick your heads up Broncos. Fix the problems and represent next Sunday versus the Jets.

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS…

  7. broncofannsd says:

Coop, I agree with you about pointing fingers and playing the “blame game”. However, until McD is able to take responsibility for his mistakes and stop pointing the finger at the players, he will never grow as a coach. It’s a team sport and we win and lose as a team, coaches included. Coach needs to take a step back and take a long look in the mirror before he starts questioning the players toughness. I don’t pretend to know what goes on behind closed doors, but I do know it all starts with the coach. I am a frustrated fan right now, but I will always support this team and I’ll never lose my faith and hope that we can win every game we play. The division is wide open and I believe this team can grow as the season progresses, but only time will tell. We need to focus on the Jets game and move on. GO BRONCOS!!

  8. strandoftds says:

That`s right Coop, tell it like it is. We are what we are. Even though we are a average team right now I alway`s hope for the best. We got our butts kicked yesterday but that`s football and those stinken Raven`s have our number. So lets dust ourselves off, get back on our horse and kick some major butt against those Arrogant jets and serve them some CROW!! I predicted the Bronco`s to go 9-7 this year. I circled the jets game before the season as a Bronco`s win. I`m a die hard Bronco`s fan regardless of the outcome. We got some things to build on and thats OK. Lastly, it`s bazarre to see the Chief`s 2 games ahead in our division, and every other team is 2-3. Totally wierd. I`d have to say right now that the AFC West is up for grabs. I`m just being optimistic since S.D. is struggling. If the Bronco`s go 4-4 at the half way point of the season, we`ve got a shot. GO BRONCS!!

  9. strandoftds says:

Our running game looked better this weekend, but we got a long, long way to go as far as keeping other defenses honest. Where`s our power back for goodness sake?

  10. brian_schneider says:

All I gotta say is the the Devil better have some winter clothes because Hell has to be frozen over when the Broncos are caboosing the AFC West.

I hope we start performing better, but at least this year I am not getting all excited early to only have my hopes smashed at the end of the season.

I still think we’re playing ok. It is just that dog gone running game..it dog gone and left us. Our o-line needs to stop with the drive killers. Maybe we can take advantage of the Jets due to their short week.

I do believe that the AFC West is up for grabs too. We haven’t even played a divisional game yet and I sure hope when the time comes we’ll be ready for that challenge. Right now let’s get ready to bust up some J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets….suck. LOL!!!

    Go Broncos!!!!

  11. strandoftds says:

There is one play yesterday that I just could not understand at all. It was when we ran the ball on 3rd and 11. that just baffles me to no end. Horrible play call by McD. The dumbest of the day I`d say, and against the Ravens, come on. Thats plain idiotic. I could see a 3rd and 11 for a play action pass or any pass and not get the first down, but to run against the Ravens on 3rd and 11 is setting yoursef to fail in my estimation. McD, I have faith in you, but with some of your play calling I`m beginning to second guess myself. Come on coach, I can see us running on 1st or 2nd and long but that call was rediculious. We have a QB with a good arm, and with the most passing yards thus far. Where`s the trust in your QB huh. I`m just frustrated in some of the calls thats all. That call was number 1 for me anyway. We`ll get the next one, those arrogant foulmouth jets with no class whatsoever. GO BRONCO`S!!!!!!!!

  12. vraptor567 says:

well no doubt that was a game that showed all our weaknesses, and there was plenty to go around. Just amazing that we keep losing ball games and KO is at the top of NFL passing game; and KC is the top of AFC west wtf?
seems like we have the talent but at some point the buck is going to stop in front of McD.
At least SD lost but they lost to the raiders!!! not sure what its going to take to get us to win some games, as usual there is always hope, hope that we can beat the Jets at home to get to 3:3 (sad that we are hoping just to reach that lofty goal). Just waiting for the week to go by and get another shot on the field. Hate the losing streak but always there on game day.
    GO BRONCOS

  13. blum says:

I’m so tired of watching this team being out coached every week. I’m also tired of hearing about a power back until the o-line can open some holes I don’t care who is in the backfield there will be no running game period. I love the broncos always have always will but I’m sick and tired of watching them lose like this.

  14. Manny 01 says:

I’m just going to move on to the jets game. I’m going to stay positive, maybe this time we going to start a positive run than a horible run. We all remember what happened last season after baltimore. But my positive about this lost is orton prove he can pass againts one of the best, and most important in a ok o-line. We beat the jets 27-24.

  15. 07elway says:

    VERY WELL SAID, COOP!!

I couldn’t agree more. It’s games like these that (unfortunately) happen but a strong, fighting team will pick themselves up and learn from their mistakes, look adversity straight in the face and do what it takes to be a better team. We have been a struggling team for a good 3-5 years now, granted it’s getting old, but you don’t get to be a great team without some struggles.

This was my favorite part about what you said and I can only hope this team figures this out. “You win some, you lose some, but you learn from every experience and get back up to fight again.”

We have 2 home games coming up, one against a stingy Oakland team… let’s bury these guys in the ground. Come out fighting and show no mercy.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!!

  16. baylinorcrush says:

I probably like what broncofannsd had to say about McD above best, but many good posts as usual.

  17. Broncos_ED says:

im with ya 07Elway we have seen good with the bad . its the youngest o-line in football and they are just getting all 5 on the field together with 2 rooks. the cefs went fron bad to good on the o-line last year we can to . and they are pass blocking good already. GO BRONCOS and 1 last thing how about that mutha fn quarterback!!! KEEP IT GOING KYLE

  18. Broncos_ED says:

the chefs ooops went from bad to good in the run game last year we can this year…

  19. imready says:

I like this team Coop, I see them getting better every week and I still think they will make the playoffs. I saw them quit last year. I see them getting tired this year but I don’t see them quiting. There better be some Orton jerserys in the stands this week or maybe the team should move to a town that appreciates them. Denver doesn’t need to turn into another Philidelphia, these guys deserve some respect for their output on the field. Go Broncos!

  20. cincyb-man fan says:

these curses that we are talking about exist. for example the cincinnati bungles have not won in denver since 1975, they have never beaten the raiders in oakland but beat them in L.A. I don’t recall denver winning in baltimore, miami or NYC giants or the jets.remember this elway never lost to the pats 16-0,and the bungles 11-0,but never beat miami in the regular season. So yes curses do exist in the NFL. Why do the cowboys wear white at home? Because they rarely win in their blue.Take these facts and dig them up I’m sure they are close.Broncos forever Bengals never!

  21. mark_cooper says:

baylinorcrush, O.K. you got me…touche…thought I floated that one by. Honestly though I’m not try to be polite but there’s no use killing a team that’s struggling and who now is seeing the injury bug biting.

sndvl says, now that was funny, tough to argue with too.

benbronco9, it’s been tough in the bay this year? What’s your take on your head coach? being that close?

Big D 44 , That’s why I say we just put this one behind us and shelve it to a lesson learned from a Playoff team.

broncofannsd, guarnetee the coaches take the “L” as bad as the players if not more, but you can only work with what you have to improve and we need a lot of work in different areas and during the season it’s baby steps and again, we’re not a seasoned team yet. No excuse, just we have a lot of work to do.

strandoftds, I like your attitude. I played on an average team in Tampa,,,actually sub avaerage and we had a shot every week if we executed our game plan. AND yes we did have the ugly—est uniform in the history of the sport. :o )

brian_schneider, agree the AFC’s wide open.

vraptor567, short week for the Jets but like I mentioned at the beginning of the season. Our lack of depths scares me to death. Guys will have to play up this week, another playoff team.

blum’s right it all starts upfront….period.

Manny 01, I’m with ya!!! :o ) Jets are playing as well as any team in the league this year, so far.

07elway, yep football emulates life…never say die.

Broncos_ED, it’s in the hands of the oline and their coach to “GET ER DONE” the old fashioned way…hit somebody in the mouth.

imready, gotta love the guy…he just performs…that’s what a leader does, leads by example.

cincyb-man fan, Thanks man, I love ya!!!! Uou just proved I’m smarter than I thought I was. “THE CURSE”..it exists, I’m not crazy…….well maybe? :o ) great points made.

Tough week coming against a Playoff caliber team coming off a short week. We’ll have some young players filling in.

My word of the week is:
    EXECUTE….what’s yours?

    Coop

  22. baylinorcrush says:

INTENSITY or 60 MINUTES, but that would be two words so I’ll just go with the first, but execution is good, and specially in McD’s eyes since he always says that’s what we lack. Like I said the other day, everyone is executing so badly in the running game that McD is going to execute the whole bunch of them himself, LOL.

  23. Al Wilson 4 Mayor says:

My word of the week would be Prayer. :0)

I know injuries are part of the game, but it would have been nice to see what Elvis and Robert would have looked like holding the edges this year. Oh well, that’s life. Hopefully Moss can step up because Robert was very good against the run. Losing him really hurts.

  24. Broncos Born & Raised says:

I don’t know what McDaniels interview you guys were watching, but in the one I watched he specifically said, “We were out coached”. But I can see how you could take that to mean “It’s all the players fault”. Honest mistake right? Wrong. We win as a team and lose as a team. The coaches and players understand that. Too bad the bloggers don’t.

  25. Broncos Born & Raised says:

And my word of the week is NEW. It’s a NEW week with NEW opportunities for some NEW faces on defense. Let’s see what they can do before we declare them losers. Maybe Moreno will stop being a stranger this week as well.

  26. 07elway says:

I’m with Al Wilson 4 Mayor… word of the week is Prayer!!! But Coop has a point with Execute. This team has struggled with that in all our games. They need a prayer and learn how to execute. lol

BBR – don’t rule out all bloggers when it comes to what you said. I’ve been saying “We win as a team and lose as a team.” for years. No one listens. That’s been my motto for this team for a long time now. And to some degree, we were out coached in Baltimore. We all knew going into their house it would be extremely tough… and while some people translate that into their own words like “its all the players fault”, coaches are to blame as well for questionable play-calling. Hence, the word TEAM… ha, there’s my word for the week right there. lol, I’m a girl I can change my mind if I wanna. ;p

Play like a freakin’ TEAM already!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Have some faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  27. Broncos Born & Raised says:

07Elway I totally mispoke. There are plenty of bloggers who aren’t putting their foot in their mouths. And even the ones who do make some good points sometimes.

  28. 07elway says:

lol, no worries… just didn’t want you thinking all the bloggers here think “we win as a team and we lose as a team”. I make bold statements about this team more often than not but its for a good cause. I trust this team and I’m certain they’ll overcome all the odds that are against them this week and gut out a home win… then turn around and show the Faiders how it’s really done. I won’t jump too far ahead with the 49ers.

    Have some faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  29. TRAIDERHATER says:

When the ravens were the browns, they were cursed along with Marty and Bernie. Its their payback to us
