Superbowl on Fly?
I know the title messed with you guys but I have to brag a little. I got an AFC Championship ring in “86″, but I just got my Superbowl win last weekend in “Islamorada, Florida” winning the fly division of the Rolex IGFA Inshore Championships. It’s a tournament where you had to win a tournament in 2007 to be invited. If you win a tournament or come in 2nd and the 1st place finisher doesn’t go, 2nd place participant gets asked.
I finished 2nd or runner-up to Wade Boggs last year in a Key West Redbone Celebrity Charity tournament for Cystic Fibrosis and he didn’t go, so as runner-up, I was asked. We fished 3 days for 5 different species for points and it was “better to be lucky than good”. Some of you may remember the story of that tournament as it hit the Mike & Mike show on ESPN inaccurately.
Like they say, a blind squirrel finds an acorn, right!
O.K. Camps just around the corner….it’s T it up time and let’s get going baby!! Funny how memories start flooding in. I use to HATE the drive to Greeley and the smell….man. Coming from Miami and the coastal smells of the tradewinds and saltwater….Greeley was a shocker, just imagine. We lived in dorms and would spill water on the pizza guys delivering pizza’s. I know “juvenile” comes to thought but you had to get a laugh somewhere during two-a-days and we’d have 120 guys in camp. I’ll tell a few funny stories as we get into camp blogs.
Remember we were 23-year old kids/guys trying to make a football team so some of the stories will make you laugh and also think I was missing a bolt or two (which I’ve been accused of before) and I always say. If the shoe fits, wear it!! :o)

I gotta say it is nice to see a blog from ya guys again. With camp just down the road as a fan I am just chompin at the bit for more tid bits on this years team. As a kid growing up my mom was disabled and we really could not do much together but I remember spending every sunday until I joined the Marines watching Broncos football when I left my moms would tape the games for me and I would watch them so we could talk about the games like we used too. Every fall is a very special time for me as Broncos football is what connected my family and still does today as I pass on the tradition with my Son. Broncos football has always been more than just entertainment for me and my family it is a conduit for good old family time, the BEST. May this year be one to remember guys, GO ORANGE CRUSH!!!!!

July 11th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Bring on camp. This season’s going to be great!
July 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Congrats on your fishing success Coop. I know you are just being modest about that acomplishment having fished competively at a few tournaments myself. Sure, you need some luck but you don’t win anything without considerable skill.
Looks like coach got rid of T. Henry just in time, I’m sure he will end up suspended this time. Some guys never learn.
I read an article recently in SI written by an author that went to camp with the Broncos that talked about a lot of players really hating their jobs because of the pressure and general treatment of the players by coaches. Is that true Coop? Gave me a bad feeling about football in general and really gave me doubts about my loyality to the Broncos organization. I understand people need to be motivated to perform at their best but from any management training I’ve been involved with it has never been taught that you get the most out of your employees by beating them down.
Hope that was just a few disgruntled individuals and not how all those have to live.
Looking forward to camp getting started. There are always some unexpected bright spots and we all get to watch and hear about the cream rising to the top . Sounds like most players hate it but fans love it! Go Broncos!
July 13th, 2008 at 8:06 am
So SI says that a lot of Bronco players hate camp. Whoopie doo. Coop, know of any players who loved to come to camp and reveled in two-a-days? Traing camp is called”Training” for a reason. The players are there to get better “trained”, not to have a fun experience. Shanahan will never be accused of being “Mr. Congeniality” with they players. It’s not his style. Style doesn’t matter, results do. Back to back Super Bowl wins is called results; 13 winning seasons out of 15 is called results. If you think Shanny uses primarily negative reinforcement, think a little and look at Bill Parcell’s methods. His players hated camp with a passion, but he, like Shanny, produced teams that constantly outperformed the bulk of the other teams. Look back at the Bronco head coaches and look at their styles, massive differences. Lou Sabin was a no nonsense task master, but he rapildy brought the Broncos from stumble bums to a team to be recconed with. John Ralston was a teacher who never said a bad word about any player no matter how bad he was. Red Miller was “one of the guys” who’d go out and get roaring drunk with them. Dan Reeves was a methodical bland person who demanded perfection. Shanny we know all about. What’s the one conmmon thead in all these coaches with their widely differing style?
RESULTS!!!!
What are the palyer who can’t tolerate Shanny style called?
RELEASED.
That’s the way it is with every team. If you, as a player, are not willing to adapt to the coaches “style”, you’re history.

I for one cant wait for training camp to start. Its not so much about our vets we know what they bring to the feild but it will show us alot about the younger guys we have who are expected to take on larger roles this year. We all remeber how when tatum was given the starting spot he fumbled alot in training camp, Al wilson threw him around like a rag doll, and that was kinda how his season went.
So ill be waiting to see how selvin does, if royal can take the #2 job from the fill in receivers we have penciled in their? Will the D-line be a dominant force? how much better has our O-line got? How will the safety positions shake out? all of these questions begin to be answered in training camp and preseason game. and I cant wait.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:54 am
I cant say Greeley would be my choice of places in Colorado to spend the summer either. But its not like you were there to party. LOL…. Like you said, you were trying to make a team. So you go where the team goes.
I hope its better where the team goes now. I think that was the point of the change back in the day.
I just like training camp cause it means I can get info about the team again!
To us fans, footballs of season is long. I know its not that long for players. But when you compare it to other sports. its long!
There are o lot of changes going on in the team this year. I hope all the new players mesh well on the field. I just want to see some improvement on last years season…. Ok, I want to see them in the playoffs again!
July 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Hey MC,
Well put, those are all the things I am dying to find out. I am also curious to see if Djax is able to return to old form. To see if it was him struggling last year or if it was the terrible QB play in san fran. Because we have a qb who gets receivers the ball IF they can get open… cough, cough (javon). I can’t wait to see how boss bailey does either, word on the street is he is stronger and faster than champ. So here’s to the next 11 days flying by, and to the start of training camp.
July 14th, 2008 at 4:37 am
I seriously doubt that Boss is faster than his brother if that were the case why not have him play corner? However if Boss is anything like his brother teams should be terrified of our strong side with Champ and Boss it is likely that John Lynch will get to move back to his true postion as a strong safety with Mcree taking the role of Free safety, we can then send Lynch on the blitz more often drop Mcree deep and watch as Bly, Boss and Champ tear QB’s apart especialy with Foxworth in the nickel D.J. at weak side linebacker I mean really our defense this year really is something to hoot and holler about, I am fully aware that our mike linebacker position is questionable but with two proven linebackers and one certified beast at the WILL position whoever takes over this year should be just fine. Teams are gong to have to really game plan for D.J. and our RE. With D.J. eating up a block and our ends eating up blocks and John Lynch eating up blocks the mike linebacker should be able to just read and react.

oldsouthstander: Let me clarify a few things. The article said the auther went to camp with the Broncos, it didn’t say they just hated camp, they hated their jobs, period. I never mentioned Shannahan specifically as far as coaches go. The article more or less suggested is wasn’t Shannahan as much as it was the coaches under him. That’s what I got out of the article and I found it disturbing. Personally, I always figured Shannahan was stearn but fair, kick’em in the shorts when they needed it but patted them on the back when they deserved it. Doesn’t play favorites , the best players are going to be on the field. I never figured Shannahan to be anything but a great coach, otherwise why would players love to be in Denver. Like I said, I found the contents of that article to be disturbing and wondering about how true it all was, I never suggested that it was my opinion………..
July 14th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Sorry you misunderstood my comments. What I was trying to point out is that no matterr what team you’re on, whether or not you dislike any or all of the coaching staff is irrelivent. It’s the palyers job to adapt to the coach(es) he deals with to adpt to that coach(es) style. Also, I feel that SI isn’t the essence of unbaised reporting. I find it hard to believe that a group of palyers could form that negative an opinion of coach(es) considering the short amount of time they’ve been together. Then again, mayber I’m whistling in th dark and things are as bad as SI protrayed. Only time will tell.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:30 am
I hope the Bronco new PA Announcer still does the In-com-Plete thing. I know it doesn’t relate to Coop’s column but, I also know the opposing players and fans hate it.
Go Broncos
July 16th, 2008 at 11:16 am
i think that incomplete thing is something the majority of announcers do i know they do it at the crush games also and ive heard them doing it at other stadiums watching other games.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Looking forward to camp and a new year. But, let me beg, please please don’t let the broncos wear blue on blue at home games, just awful!!!!!!
Bring back the Orange!!!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
im with tateb i thnk we should bring back the orange maybe something like a mix of the old uniforms and the current 1s would be cool
July 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
im with tateb i thnk we should bring back the orange maybe something like a mix of the old uniforms and the current 1s would be cool and does anybody remember whens the last time we actualy used the orange 1s wasnt it when we played oakland in the snow?
July 17th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I think we should start mailing in orange cards cut out as jerzys to broncos front office…. it worked for that crappy jericho show it might work for us. Orange top, blue bottoms i love that combination, top 3 in the nfl
July 17th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Heck no!… I love the Blue on Blue… I think it looks slick and more modern than Blue on White… But I do agree w/ the Orange Jerseys
Here’s what I think our Uniform match-ups should consist of:
Home- Blue on Blue
Orange on Blue
Away-White on White
White on Blue
W/ the orange on blue it would be sweet if it was blue stripes on the jersey and on the pants have an orange outline of the stripe so its like the solid orange stripe on the all blue uniforns but w/ this set up its a solid bule stripe and its outlined orange on the pants so you can see the stipe
W/ the white on blue it would be cool if you either had a solid orange stripe through jersey to pants or do something like i wrote w/ the orange on blue
July 17th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Oh… and i liked that “crappy” jericho show…
July 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I Like the blue on blue too. The team looks faster when they were the blue on blue but the orange looks really cool too.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I Like the blue on blue too. but the away jersey should have a orange stripe instead of a blue
July 18th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Here’s a question what are the broncos colors? THe answer would be ORANGE and secondary Blue. Blue is the secondary color of Denver ORange is the primary. I vote orange crush jerseys.
July 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am
This is a fun discusion.
I think they should do this…
Home vs. Division (and on big games) - Orange on White
Home vs. Other - Blue on Blue
Away vs. All - White on White
I love the Blue on Blue but for rivalry games or big games (with playoff implications or in primetime) they should were orange jersies. Kind of like how the Texans were red or the Cowboys were their alternates (you know the ones with the white helmet with the plain navy star on it with the stripes and the Jersey has the star on it to) for big games. It would be like battle jersies. But thats just my opinion.
P.S. G funk, I agree with you on the away jersies.
July 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
i loved the orange jerseys.. but wasnt it orange on white, not on blue.. or are you guys just throwing that out as an idea.. i personally dont think orange on blue would look good at all.. but heres one for ya, ORANGE ON ORANGE!!!!.. haha just kidding
July 18th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Broncosfanatic4,
I blelieve you have been a bronco fan for a long time because you still think the broncos colors are orange and blue. I’m not trying to prove you wrong, but that change about 11 years ago when they changed stadiums, jersies, logos, and team colors. The team colors used to be primary light orange and seconday powder blue. In 1997, when the team left Mile High Stadium and went to INVESCO Field, they offically changed their colors to primary navy blue, and secondary dark orange. Yes we would all like to live in the past with Elway and the orange crush defense, but denver, we all need to move on.
July 18th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I like the orange stripe idea on all white but imagine an alternate white on blue w/ orange stripe going through the jersey and pants….
Orange on blue i think will loog sharp w/ the blue stripe on the jersey and it goes into the blue pants… but wait… HOW DO YOU SEE A BLUE STRIPE ON BLUE PANTS??… WELL MAKE AND ORANGE OUTLINE OF THE STRIPE… it would look of the HIzzy FOshizzy.. ok i wont say that again
and I THNK FOR ONE GAME IT WOULD BE FUNNY AND SUPER DIFFERENT IF WE DID DO AN ORANGE ON ORANGE UNIFORM… that would be cool just for a game… it’d be a SHOCKER…
July 18th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
If you look at Video & Audio you’ll see B-marsh on the last video shown… Everytime i glance at it… it looks like its White on Blue uniforms… Now i know that its just his hand warmer thing but it looks good when you see it further away… and you actally get a good ideo of how it would look… so go look just for kicks and giggles
July 18th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
What would you guys say to a orange helmet on the away jerseys i think it would be cool or on the orange jersey
July 19th, 2008 at 9:43 am
then what color would the broncos maine be on the logo if the helmet was orange? It is a cool idea though.
July 19th, 2008 at 10:42 am
maybe a white horse with a blue outline around the horse
July 19th, 2008 at 11:47 am
If they do have an orange helmet, I don’t think they would do anything different to the logo… That’s because it already has Navy Blue around it like what G funk said… but I’d think they’d thicken it up a bit
*But see now I’m an Oregon Ducks fan and I love their Combos w/ Green, White, and Yellow helmets…. W/ Green, White, Yellow, and black Jerseys and Pants… But due to the fact of this begin the NFL I just don’t see them doing the orange helmet, Personally I think a white helmet would look INSANE on all white… Just like the all blue, I love the idea of different helmet colors once or twice a season… but besides when teams wear throwbacks they never have alternate helmets except how the chargers wore white w/ powder blue a couple years back before the jersey change…. I love the idea but i dont see it happening
If we do have alternate helmets it’d be cool like this:
White w/ White jersey/pants
Orange w/ Orange jersey Blue pants
But I don’t think they’d wear the white helmet w/ all white all the time, and same w/ the orange… I think it’d be a once… MAYBE twice a year thing for each alternate helmet
July 20th, 2008 at 8:47 am
When I said INSANE… I mean awesome… Just wanted to throw that out there to avoid any confusion…
July 20th, 2008 at 8:48 am
By the way, when I wrote INSANE… I mean awesome… I just wanted to get that out there to avoid any confusion…
July 20th, 2008 at 10:52 am
I like the sounds of that I just like the hole alternate helmet idea. I have a new topic out of all the teams the broncos are playing this year what is the one game you really want to see. I know all of them but is there one You guys want to see For me its the New England game monday night. Because everbody talks so high on the Patriots. But they haven’t beat us in a while. If we can beat them i think the team is on the map again
July 20th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
You guys are killing me with the fashion statements…. :o) I had to laugh. I’ll look for the SI article, can anyone reference it so I can go read it.
Camps not fun but a necessary evil to keep and get a job so you lay it on the line. I didn’t like every coach I played for and for that matter there were coaches that I didn’t think belonged in the NFL.
I’m anxious to the see the running backs and O-line mesh. I like the linebacking mix we have and the secondary, so the D-line, O-line and running backs is what I’ll watch for the most part to see how that comes together.
Yak soon!!!
July 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I am pumped for opening day at INVESCO Field. The rivalry between the Chargers and the Broncos is just getting bigger and bigger. And with all the trash talking at the game on Christmas Eve last year, I’d like to see Phillup Rivers leave the game a little bit early because of a John Lynch hit. But for the game, I think the winner has control of the Division for the rest of the season.
ps - G funk, good topic.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Yes good topic… I think Hype wise for me it will have to be vs. the Pats… but I cant wait to see all the games against Chargers and Raiders…
July 21st, 2008 at 5:29 am
its on page 20 of the double issue of july, 14th-21st i think. I had read it too and gotten the same vibe as everyone else. While it is an interesting article, I think it is somewhat annoying in that it portrays a dream job for a dream team as a negative experience. I am sure it is just a few players who hated the fact that they knew they would lose their job because of bigger and better players on the rise.
I am kinda stoked to see if we can beat Cleveland. But that New England game will be a good one to watch as well.
July 21st, 2008 at 11:48 am
G funk its not a matter of if we beat them its amatter of when we beat them. Think of the match ups boss bailey or lynch can cover the TE’s I say take the gloves off of champ and let him throw around randy moss all day after all taking him out the game isnt that hard and we definetly have the personel to do it. Im puttin alot of faith in the d-line to get pressure on brady.
But the only person im concerned about is Laurince maroney. The last time we played them he and al wilson were goin at it pretty good and i think we can all agree that big Al won that battle. But now al isnt here so that concerns me a lil bit, he really is one of the better talented backs but I dont think belichick values RB’s to highly cause he dosnt give him the carries he should get. The patriots only chance to win is through their running game, but i dont think belichick will do that so im sayin like 27 to 34.
July 21st, 2008 at 2:51 pm
I agree… I think that the D-line will have to be a huge factor to beating the Pats… Just look at the pressure the Giants gave ‘em in the Super Bowl… Brady did not have a good game… Now our D-line still of course needs to do good in the running game as well… I dont know but I sorta felt like I almost said everything m.c. the great said, but he makes a good point
July 21st, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I like the way we match up with the Pats. I don’t think they are as good as they were last year. I think the league is ready for the Pats. and I hope the broncs just crushes them.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
OUCH another broncos running back bites the dust, how about we dont let undrafted players wear the number 30 till theyve been with the team at least 3 years. Or better yet lets do like the Cowboys did with deons number give it to a player at another position. Give #30 to that Safety we got in a late round
July 21st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
HAHA… too true m.c…. too true…
July 24th, 2008 at 10:58 am
mike bell got booted, finally! he was a fumble machine. I think the broncos should retire the following numbers:
7 Elway
30 TD
80 Rod
27 & 29 RIP Darrent Williams and Damien Nash
No one can live up to TD and Elway, Rod will always be helping with the organization so it will be like he never left, and out of respect they need to retire our past players numbers
July 24th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I w/ out a doubt agree that 27 and 29 should be retired, and want them to be… But really… I also think that 7, 30, and 80 deserve to be also… But I dislike the retiring numbers thing because the numbers are limited… I hope and pray that we have futrue players like Elway and Smith… Are we going to retire their numbers too? I think just try and do what some other teams try to do and just try not to give it to a player… Do like what cowboys did w/ Deon and put his number to another position… number 7 can go to a punter or a kicker and WWWWAYYYYYY down the line give it to that future 1st round QB we’ll draft when Cutler is old and rinkly and has a few rings… number 80, give it to a TE… numer 30, give it to a FB or DB… Yes all those Players were GREAT and w/ out a doubt in my mind are amongst the best… But leave those numbers for our future greats as well…
***********************************************************
I’ve always felt that if a player is an ALL TIME GREAT, than the number doesnt matter…. Put Elway in 15… You can recognize him… Put TD in 25… You can recongize him… Put Rod in a 89… You can recongize him
***********************************************************
July 25th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Training camp starts today and I can’t wait to see how some of the new guys will do and if some who showed flashes of brilliance last year will become superstars. Selvin Young comes to mind and B. Marshall too , sure hope the commish cuts him some slack for being young and dumb. He could be a great one with the help of Rod Smith.
I really like the draft choices this year, it will be exciting to see those guys ! A very high character draft which I think will pay big dividends . I’m expecting this group fo Broncos to exceed expectations and make the playoffs.
It will be exciting watching our 2nd year d-lineman emerge and I think we will see dramatic improvement.
What I’m trying to say is I like the roster overall and can’t wait to see these guys start making their mark. The competition better be ready this year……..With the off season commitment made by the players this year, I think that tells us all we will have a “TEAM” effort which in the NFL spells “SUCCESS”! Go Broncos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 29th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Fishing huh? You remind me of my dad, Uncle Fred.
July 29th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I need help:
I have Jamal Lewis (CLE), Selvin Young (DEN) and Fred Taylor (JAC) on my fantasy team. For week 1 Cleveland plays Dallas, Denver plays Oakland, and Jacksonville plays Tennessee. Which two running backs should I start?
