DAY 4

Day four and I have to say our staff is getting a little tired. The early mornings are the hardest on our hair and makeup artists, but Octavio and Sedrique keep going and turning out beautiful work as do our photographers Rob Hawthorne and Pete Eklund. We all keep each other motivated for each shot to make sure the Cheerleaders look their absolute best.

We also have a film crew along documenting the “Making of the 2009 Broncos Cheerleaders Calendar” that will air on Comcast Video on Demand mid August and be available for sale with our Calendar. Sarah Culter (former Broncos Cheerleader) is the host of the show and Garron Bateman and Nick Young our camera crew. They have a very scary knack of catching you doing the most embarrassing things on camera and keeping us all laughing at ourselves. I will definitely have to screen the calendar special before it goes on air!

Tuesday, July 8th

This morning we started hair and makeup at 3:00 a.m. to get 5 cheerleaders ready for their shoots at X-Caret (pronounced ish-car-et). X-Caret is an internationally known Ecological park. It is one of the most beautiful places in Mexico. The Park features, dolphins, sea turtles, lagoons, an underground river, jaguars, plenty of beaches and hammocks to relax, a butterfly pavilion and much more.

We have currently set up camp in Okinawa at Kadena Air Base. We performed a show last night and will perform our last full show this evening at Camp Schwab. The majority of troops on this base are Marines.

Tomorrow we have a full day. We will rise at 6 a.m. to prepare for a Super Bowl halftime performance mid-morning during the Giants-Pats faceoff. We will be in attendance to surprise some troops at two different Super Bowl parties on base tomorrow. Those shows will be a 25-minute abbreviated version of our full 1 1/2 hour show.

I have a few minutes of downtime this afternoon, so I wanted to write a brief blog entry to keep you posted on our travels.

We arrived in Guam on Jan. 24 and it has been a beautiful time and a rich experience. Guam is incredibly westernized and the people, tropical nature, and tone have all been so warm and welcoming.

Yesterday was the busiest day we have had yet. We were able to spend time with the Navy and Air Force men and women. Along our visits we spent time with so many different professions — among some of the things on the agenda we saw a dog-handler demonstration, and learned a little more about the Air Force. We also toured a “Stealth” B2 bomber — an experience, we are told, that many in the military never have the opportunity to do.

The DBC departed on January 16, 2008 and we have been traveling around for the past several days hosting cheerleading clinics for the youth of military families, meeting our troops and performing our 2-hour show for various branches of the military. It is about 3:59 a.m. and we are waiting in the airport preparing to leave for Kwajalein — one of the Midway Islands, and according to many, “the best kept secret in the military.”

We have only been gone for a few days, but the adventures and the incredible people just continue rolling into our path. Our first youth cheerleading clinic was the Kekaha dancers in Kauai. Our clinics host a variety of age groups; we have met the most sincere, passionate, honest, and beautiful young souls since we have been out here — the children of our heroes. I could tell you specifics of everything we’ve done, but I don’t have an incredible amount of time. Rather, I would like to tell you the overall impact that this trip has had in the first few days alone.

The Broncos season has certainly come to a close, however football season is well on its way to the game football fans anticipate year-round. Super Bowl XLII in Arizona is just around the corner and the contenders are being decided as we speak.

Oddly enough, my father played in the Super Bowl almost 40 years ago with the Minnesota Vikings against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV. (Check out the ring and ticket: http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/ringandticket/sbiv.) Unfortunately the Vikings suffered a loss that day, but that doesn’t change the fact that my father is a part of Super Bowl history — and that is a beautiful thing!

When the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders traveled to Canton, Ohio to celebrate John Elway’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004, I walked wide-eyed through a facility where football fans could spend hours. Athleticism, integrity and legacy are all under one roof. I could smell the passion, the fire, and the hits. The trophy case that holds every Super Bowl ring in existence gives prestige to the sport. That was a great day.

Well, it is nearly the end of November and the Denver Broncos only have two home games left this season. With four games away from home of the final six remaining this season we need all of the fan support and enthusiasm we can get! Are any of you planning to make it to any of the road games?

This year Thanksgiving was a beautiful celebration with family and friends. I hope that all of you were able to bring in the holiday season with some of the same experiences. Last year I started a baking tradition with the women in my life. I carried it on this year and made apple pie from scratch — crust and all. The preparation portion was fun, and the end product is always one of the best parts, but I think one of the things I enjoy most about the process is taking advantage of the time with my mother and grandmother who both live here in Colorado. It is refreshing to bring in the holiday with people who have sincerely impacted your life.

Thanksgiving morning I ran the Turkey Trot in Washington Park with several friends. The course was beautiful and people got pretty into the race by dressing up. It was certainly a memorable experience. Do any of you have interesting Thanksgiving traditions?
