There was an NFL call on ratings Thursday afternoon, with Erich Schubert, Broncos Media Relations Coordinator, taking part. Erich gave me some great notes on that call, and this is the sharing of Erich’s notes.
Everybody always knows and admits that the NFL is big, but do people really know what big is? Or, what I really mean, is what “BIG” is?
Even though normal broadcast programming has been in decline over the last seven years, the NFL and sports in general have not been susceptible to this because audiences still want to watch sports live.
FOX, NBC, ESPN and NFLN all set viewership records last year while CBS had the highest average viewership since 1993. Imagine. The highest viewership for CBS in 16 years!
The 2009 draft had higher ratings than NBA and NHL players, MLB and NASCAR; with the first two rounds coming to prime time this year, look for those ratings to spike like a bad singer’s hairdo.
Super Bowl XLIV (44 to those who don’t know Latin) was the most viewed program in U.S. history, attracted a larger total audience than the combined viewership/audiences of the 2009 Stanley Cup final (game seven), the 2009 NBA finals (game five), the 2009 World Series (game six) and the 2010 NASCAR Daytona 500.
Denver is one of 12 NFL markets in which NFL programming ranked number one in all 17 weeks during the regular season-no surprise to Broncophiles, but a reminder to us all.
And here’s one straight from an ESPN Sports Poll: the Denver Broncos rank as America’s ninth favorite pro sports (the sixth favorite NFL team), despite not placing a player in the top 10 list of America’s favorite athletes. That number nine ranking is up for the Broncos from number 13 is 2007 and number 11 in 2008, again according to figures from the Nielsen survey.
The NFL teams ranked above Denver are: Dallas, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, New England, and Indianapolis, with Denver sixth in the NFL, ninth overall. The New York Yankees (third overall behind Cowboys and Steelers), Las Angeles Lakers (fourth overall) and Boston Red Sox (eight overall) are the only non-NFL teams ranked ahead of the Broncos.
Some great research that shows us all, one more time, what BIG is.

Uuummm? maybe theroyalbronco IS Moreno????? haha
Marshall, Doom and Sheffler have strangely helped the Broncos this off-season. Doom isn’t going anywhere with the highest tender is place which is good news but the staff and coach’s have approached this off-season as if the 3 players where injured. This will help us with depth at all 3 of those key positions.
Everyone has put there hands in the air as if Tony and Brandon have been shipped out of Denver with no compensation? They still are Denver Broncos right now. They have a higher chance of staying in Denver than they do leaving. I wouldn’t be surprised to see all 3 of them back next year and approaching this off-season as if they are injured will only make us better prepared if any of them miss anytime in the future.
That is why the Broncos have held private workouts with 8 WR’s, 4 OLB’s and TE’s. I believe Brandon Graham is visiting soon and think he would be a great Bronco!
I would hate to think a first round draft pick would have such little class, after all Marshall was only a fourth round pick, LMAO.
I totally agree DOOMervilfan. Well said. Also, I bet theroyalbronco bleeds black and silver. Stop contradicting dude.
Marshall is a GREAT guy…. So is Orton…what else can I say…lol
I don’t think we can let sndvl drive the Big Blue Bus with us this year because he would deffinetly put McChaos under there…lol
I’m doing superfine this evening my friend. I am enjoying the high 60′s degree weather and there’s nothing like spingtime in the rockies…
ADM, however much I disagree with all the points you make why the miscontent players (Marshall and Scheffler) will be Broncos next year, I truly admire the conviction you use as to convince yourself that these guys will be Broncos next year. Kudos to you. Relentless supporting of your favorite players, nothing wrong with that. On the other hand they are not my favs and I hope they both go as everybody knows by now and I won’t antagonize anyone any longer re-hashing why I think they are as good as gone. Different strokes for different strokes. The beauty of the blog.
I say that the trade of Santonio Holmes to New York actually makes it more likely that Marshall stays in Denver because the fact that the Jets only gave up a 5 round pick. If thats all teams are offering for these premier wide outs Im guessing the we wont get a first rounder.
And thats as low as McDaniels is going to go for Marshall.
With or without BMarsh, and Scheffler the show must go on. Go BLUE AND ORANGE!!!
Call me bias, but I believe Brandon is goona be a Bronco in 2010.
McD will let Marshall go for whatever his value calls for. McD really blew it when he lowered Marshall’s value by benching him for the last game, hence revealing the fact that he is dead set on trading him, so I’m disappointed at him for that as I’m sure he is disappointed at himself for the blatant mistake, but he is a young and inexperienced HC and he will make mistakes. But don’t fool yourself, he is not about to eat his ways just because he made a mistake, he will let Marshall go no matter for what because that is what he deems best for the organization, and so do I. Just my opinion, and it doesn’t mean a helluvalot as BFE would say…
I was watching a mock draft on nhl.com and it says the Broncos will take Maurkice Pouncey with the 11th pick thoughts?
Should the broncos trade down the pick to take pouncey in the later picks or should the broncos take Rolando McClain
McD, benching Marsh was a mistake. I bet he`ll think twice the next time. I have faith in McD. He`s gonna be a fine head coach.
Now many say both Williams and McClain will be picked before the 11th, if that’s the case the choice will be easy, trade down half a dozen spot for an extra third and get Pouncey. But if either McClain or Williams are available at the 11th, I say pick either one of them as they are at least three more centers worthy of our consideration who could be available in later rounds. Just my opinion.
TRB, not cool
The Broncos SHOULD trade up and get Pouncey. We need to really work on our running game more than getting McClain, plus there will be other linebackers later on in the draft and we have people that can fill in that hole for now…
Getting a center like Pouncey would give us a great o-line and open up our running game. We would also get either a 2nd round pick or 3rd round pick which we could definitely use to get Gerhart or who ever is there when our pick comes up…
I would also be up for getting Iupati. Actually I think Iupati could contribute more than Pouncey. Think about having Clady on one side and Iupati on the other.
It might be just be but I saw more runs develop last year by running on the left side than right and Iupati could solve this for us and give us a complete brick wall!
baylinocrush, nobody has a crystal ball. 1 of my points was not that they will 100% be back, but that we will ad depth at those positions and if they do return we will be prepared for injuries. I agree with strandoftds, the show must go on. This is why I think the team mentality wins.
KooDude I think we should trade with the Giants. 11 for 15, pick up another 3rd round pick and take C Pouncey at 15 then move back into the first round with 80 and 45 to pick up ILB Witherspoon.
broncosfreak30, when you trade to get an extra pick, it’s called trading DOWN, not UP, I saw you posting that earlier, I thought it was just a wrong choice of word, but no, so here we go, we need to trade DOWN the draft board to get Pouncey with the 18th-22nd, something like that and get an extra pick in the process. No one will give us an extra pick if we trade up, we would have to give one up instead, and we probably would be going for Suh or Gerald McCoy then, just clarifying your thoughts, hope you don’t mind.
Would suck if we traded out of the 1st for Pouncey and some one ahead of us gets him rofl…..I for one see McHoodie picking up talent over needs..hence moreno last year.
And mcChaos reminds me of butters off of south park…So whos general dissaray? Orton? lol!
I don’t mind, everyone knew what I was meaning, just typing too fast to read my posts just because this whole draft has got me losing my mind!
I just wished there was some way of knowing who McD REALLY wants…that would make me feel better. I just hope we make the right moves in the draft and also hope we can work out the whole Marshall thing which probably wont happen
A bit off topic, but I do hope that we somehow get Brandon Graham. I really like the guy.
I’m probably going to eat my words on this one, but I really don’t care what happens to Marshall and Scheff. I love Marshall’s talent, but business is business, and wherever the cards fall is where the cards will stay. There’s a 50 percent chance for everything. Either he stays, or he goes. Whichever way doesn’t bother me. We will always find a way to win no matter who is out on the field. Scheff is the same to me. There’s plenty of great recievers and TE’s out there besides these two, and you can’t tell me there isn’t.
I don’t know what they will do either. I can’t say McD is set on trading him, nor is he going to be a bronco. All I know right now is that Next year is going to be exciting, the draft isn’t even over yet, and I’m still hoping for the Playoffs!
Brandon Graham dominated the heck out of the Senior Bowl. He played like he had something to prove.
Found this guys on ESPN, thought ya’ll would like to see it!
UPDATE: Florida cornerback Joe Haden said on ESPN on Monday that the Raiders are one of the four teams that have talked to him the most. Oakland has the No. 8 pick.
OC thanks man. I said this earlier and will say it again I think we will pick the best player available at 11 might not fit a need but that is how most of the best teams draft
Why has no one come for Scheffler yet?
I think the reason why teams arent after Scheffler is because of his atitude at the end of the season and teams probably dont want that on their team just for a TE
I’ll hang my hopes on McD and be a “joshkateer” for about 2 games into the season and if the offense comes out there helpless and pathetic again with Orton at the helm and Moreno spinning his wheels in the mud, I will have to rethink my opinion on McD’s “offensive guru” status.
If, for the first 2 games, Royal doesn’t get at least 10 catches and 2 TD’s, I’ll know that serious problems still exist in the links of the system between play caller, play manager, and playmaker….. Royal should have Stud Stats in his 3rd year… by all means…
There will probably be no Spidermash around to do ten foot leaping one handed ” web slings” to snag Ortons lame ducks out of thin air… and then “webweave” his way into the endzone…
I do think that one of the WR’s like Brandon Lloyd or Kenny Mckinley could make a much, much bigger impact than expected, if given the chance… If they do??? they could acheive SuperBronco status.. jmho
ILMSDB!!!!
Wasn’t Marshall a 2nd, Baylinor? Anyway, I’ve already stated and restated my opinions on Marshall (keep him) and the draft (McClain), I just want something NEW to happen! I’m tired of talking about the same old things.
I can’t blame royals stats only on McD he wasn’t on the field throwing the ball
footballmaniac he was a 4th rounder
FManiac, Brandon was drafted in the 4th round, 119th overall.
bro i like how you tell me to get a life when all you do is sit on your a## and blog
Maybe benching Marshall was a blessing in disguise, or purposefully masterminded by Chaos…
If Josh wouldn’t have benched Marshall, his value would have been higher and propably garnered a first rd pick and assured SpiderMarsh’s exodous from the X-team and the Mile High City….
Therfore, making his value lower and causing no team to be interested in him and not accepting anything less than a high 1st round pick assures that he will be on the team in 2010… Witch, is exactly what McD wanted?… hummmm????
Maybe this McChaos is SuperSmart… His whole plan is to Make Marshall stay and play for less money….He’s soo smart that us mere mortals cant see his ingenious plans with our small brains….lol
Anyhow about Scheffler not getting any bites, when a player on a team playing for a playoff spot says he can’t wait for the f#$%&@g season to be over with a couple games left, that pretty much is all a HC has to hear, after that all his stats and whatever talent the guy has is pretty much meaningless. And in a similar way, even if not as flagrant, Marshall pretty much laid the foundation for the same type of non response from other teams when he said he couldn’t play the last game with what was regarded to be a minor injury. Folks will say he was already misdiagnosed about his hip last year, so he didn’t trust the medical advice, but just take a look at Favre, the guy played eighteen some seasons without ever not starting a game and he got beat up at least 100 times worse than Marshall ever has. That is what I call a real football player. Enough said. Both these guys are better gone no matter their value and what we get for them. Just my opinion.
OC you are exploring every possibility aren’t you
Do you think guys like Scheffler and Marshall think that because the coach is so young they don’t have to respect him and can get away with certain things
yeah, Scheffler and Marshall both tanked at certain times last season and then turned on the juice when they felt like it. It was pitiful to watch both of those guys blow plays on purpose….. jomho…
It might ultimately backfire if Coach keeps Marsh and then doesn’t sign him for enough $ that he gets mad and does kinky crap to get even…
I think Josh should offer Marshall a fairly lucrative 1 year deal, all based on his performance and exemptness of foul behavior…. I would really like to see Marshall play to his potential without any distractions…
Then next year he can fly and be free.. or we will have to pay big bucks…??? idk?
marshisboss,
I love to look for the root cause on issues that intrigue me…
the Broncos secure 50% of my brain power…haha
There is no doubt that McD has yet to earn the respect of his players, as I always say they respect his recipe for winning but they don’t see eye to eye with how he goes about achieving it. The older more mature players follow with docility because they know there is no better way to get ahead in the league, the younger ones have yet to realize how docility is important to the bottom line in the league ($$) so they let their emotions get the best of them when McD makes them mad. They are probably justified but it is not how the hierarchy works in the NFL. Expensive lessons to learn for both Marshall and Scheffler right now. Maybe them learning their lesson through the pocket book is the only way they’ll learn…

TRB, not cool
I was about to be like WHOA WHOA WHOA…What did I do? lol, until i saw that some uncouth Douche bag named theroyalbroncos said some trashy stuf….FYI 4broncosjeff….Im the only TRB around these parts (in a country accent) lol
Like your Scenario OC
…and this thing about our players being superheroes/villains is hilarious. I hope your wonky view of things is the right one. Like they always say, its a scary place in the mind of genius and a coach, even more so in the mind of a genius coach lol. Juries still out on whether McChaos is a Mad Scientist, or just mad lol
And Baylin,
MANY people have said Marshall is a great guy. Now you know i wouldnt let that slip by. A couple of teamates, including Prater who was with him in UCF, Opposing CBs who have felt his Beastlyness and some other people i dont remember. Dont ask me to back this up cuz i dont feel like looking for the quotes lol. But just like with Bannaan and Jarvis green, they could all be hollow words that a player is supposed to say. Politically correct thing. So its all about if the listener wants to believe. We pick and choose. For example, if it was said about Marshall, you prolly will say “they are just saying that” because you dont like him or dont think he is a great person lol. Im not defending or bashing either…im just syaing…all opinion lol
Yea, im with you OC. Lets see one year where money isnt an issue and where there are no questions about whether Marshall is giving his all. I dont think either Marshall or Sheffler threw plays last year. Maybe sheff. Maybe we just expect alot out of them because they are amazing that when they have bad game or play we think they flopped. But I doubt it. I guess i just dont wanna believe any athlete will do that. Especially one that cares about stats and fights as hard as Marshall does for every yard…but there i go being Naive again lol
TRB, I’m afraid your handle has become instant dirt, LOL. jk/
brono-blaze,
thank you for “general disaray”….hahaha soo funny, I have my SuperHero name for Orton now….lol
Anybody hear about Terry Bradshaw bashing the Hell outta Big Ben.Bradshaw said”Our relationship isn’t any good, when I told him to park the bike he got pissed,I told him he’s got to realize WHO he is”,with a angry look on his face.Bradshaw’s got a point.Just thought I’d throw that out there, just one man’s opinion that don’t mean a helluva lot.LOL
Hey guys we can argue about the Beast,Orton,or McD or we can all agree we are gonna have a helluva Defense next year.As Baylin mention about Bannon,he likes Green and Green likes Williams,I say our Dline will be pretty Damn good, but we might have to rotate Jamal, just hope if we don’t draft some help,McBean and Fields step it up.Either way it will take some load off our LB’s and secondary.
Hang in there TRB we still have hope, don’t go changing your handle just yet,LMAO
BFE, for what it’s worth, this is from the sporting news:
Running back-needy teams need not just look to the draft for help. Two veterans — Bills RB Marshawn Lynch and Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown — are available on the trade market for mid-round draft picks, according to Yahoo! Sports and ESPN reports.
I like both those guys but can’t remember their size,we need a big bruising back right????
