There was an NFL call on ratings Thursday afternoon, with Erich Schubert, Broncos Media Relations Coordinator, taking part. Erich gave me some great notes on that call, and this is the sharing of Erich’s notes.
Everybody always knows and admits that the NFL is big, but do people really know what big is? Or, what I really mean, is what “BIG” is?
Even though normal broadcast programming has been in decline over the last seven years, the NFL and sports in general have not been susceptible to this because audiences still want to watch sports live.
FOX, NBC, ESPN and NFLN all set viewership records last year while CBS had the highest average viewership since 1993. Imagine. The highest viewership for CBS in 16 years!
The 2009 draft had higher ratings than NBA and NHL players, MLB and NASCAR; with the first two rounds coming to prime time this year, look for those ratings to spike like a bad singer’s hairdo.
Super Bowl XLIV (44 to those who don’t know Latin) was the most viewed program in U.S. history, attracted a larger total audience than the combined viewership/audiences of the 2009 Stanley Cup final (game seven), the 2009 NBA finals (game five), the 2009 World Series (game six) and the 2010 NASCAR Daytona 500.
Denver is one of 12 NFL markets in which NFL programming ranked number one in all 17 weeks during the regular season-no surprise to Broncophiles, but a reminder to us all.
And here’s one straight from an ESPN Sports Poll: the Denver Broncos rank as America’s ninth favorite pro sports (the sixth favorite NFL team), despite not placing a player in the top 10 list of America’s favorite athletes. That number nine ranking is up for the Broncos from number 13 is 2007 and number 11 in 2008, again according to figures from the Nielsen survey.
The NFL teams ranked above Denver are: Dallas, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, New England, and Indianapolis, with Denver sixth in the NFL, ninth overall. The New York Yankees (third overall behind Cowboys and Steelers), Las Angeles Lakers (fourth overall) and Boston Red Sox (eight overall) are the only non-NFL teams ranked ahead of the Broncos.
Some great research that shows us all, one more time, what BIG is.

I like what Green said about coming to Denver to be a Winner,he will help our Dline more than most people think.IMO….Didn’t know him and Jamal signed at the same time,I guess they figured the D in Denver is for DEFENSE…LOL
This is a great piece on the Broncos.

If McD is such a numbers type guy has he seriously considered this concerning Marshall (and his offense)?-
Catches-101
Rec Yards-1120
Points-60 (10 TDs)
56 first downs
He doubled his scoring production. 15 TD’s the 3 previous years. Avg of 5/year. We all know his average receptions over the last 3 years is at 100.
His four year average of rec yards is also 1,000/year. (1200/year in his 3 100+ catch seasons)
Now, Kyle Ortons stats:
Comp-336
Yards-3802
TDs-21
What exactly does Marshall mean to our offense?
He scored 1/5 of our point total (326); 1/3 of our passing game- (101/326) and roughly 1/4 of our rec yards (closer to 1/3); 56 first downs (306 team total) which also translates to 1/5 of the team total.
Trading him for anything less than a first is just plain dumb! Well, trading him period is just plain dumb…but McD isnt all that smart to begin with…
Sounds like Green believes in McDaniels. He seen something there in N.E.
Kliss says we’ll trade down for Pouncey OC.
Lombardi says we’ll pick Williams NT,or Brandon Graham OLB.
I can live with either scenerio, but I think we are in need more of an ILB than an OLB.
SNDVL well put.
I mentioned Ortons stats-
Thats 235 completions to roughly 10 other players- 23.5/per player/year
2,682 yards to 10 other players- 268.2/player/year
10 TDs to roughly 10 players- 1/player/year
Factor in KM’s 9 TD’s (2 rec) and thats 7 td’s to the other 9.
I dont like these numbers at all…
McD seems to be very smart in some areas and not so smart in others, hope HE grows up this year too.
I bet the nfl schedule comes out by Wednsday at the latest. I `m looking forward to seeing it. Come on Monday Night Football!!
So where is the rest of this production supposed to come from? B. Quinn? Royal? Gaffney? Lloyd? Dez Bryant? R. Quinn? KM? A 3rd rd pick? 5th rd pick? Somebody please help me on this one. Preferably McD himself…
I remember something a math teacher said to me many years ago- Numbers dont lie, they are the only absolute truth!
McDaniels believe`s it`s the system. Just plug in a player. Yea right.
It is not a distraction for the team or coaching staff. They have already made there plan a long time ago. There plan is to not restrict Marshall’s progress by putting both a 1st and a 3rd tender on him. They are giving him a chance to prove he is worth more than 9.5 million a year. If he is, 1 of the 31 other teams will give up a first round pick. If not he will play where he has his entire career so far. Both the coach and Brandon have said they would like him to stay a Bronco. Brandon has an opportunity to get some leverage on his contract and if he really wants to he can leave… here his chance.
If McX does not stick to there word, it will effect there trades moving forward. One thing McX has shown so far is conviction. The other teams can think whatever they want and try to offer 3rd and 4 rounders at the Broncos. At the end of the day the only way I can see it even being the 1st pick in the second round is if there is a target very high on there board that they want.
I think it is 70% that he will be a Bronco next year and that percentage will get higher everyday closer to the Draft.
The Broncos are not playing. They put it in plain Black and White Brandon Marshall is going to cost a 1st round pick.
Brandon Graham has become a option. You can never have enough Blitzing LB’s in the 34. You just can’t. Haggan and Williams should be fine in the middle. Doom, Ayers, Graham should be a healthy dose of QB sacking power.
I am dying here guys, I just really need to see one of two things happen now
1. Is Marshall going to be a Bronco
2. Who all will we get in the draft???
I am getting sick and tired of all this BS that goes on in the off season for us. Last year it was the whole Cutler thing, not its the Marshall thing…I think next year well be trying to drive Doom or DJ out of town…
How much drama can really go on in the off season for us…this is getting ridiculous!!
*now its the Marshall thing
Marshall has already sucked it up and played his underpaid 4yr contract, to tell him to suck it up and play another year with an underpaid tender. I see him having to settle for an higher paying contract that is not quite what he wants with a chance for renegotiation next year or two if he continues his progress. If his character was Andre Johnson or Larry Fitz, He woulda gotten the contract a long time ago. Heck, even greg jennings and roddy white got em last year. Sucks for him. It is what it is tho. I still think theres a good chance he stays but if he goes, he goes
I like OLB Graham but we have Ayers and Moss (yea i know he is a bust) but still we have jsut been stock piling on potential in that area, we need ILB or DT/NT in my opinion if we go Defense. But we also need OL so who knows, I like Klis explanation of why the trade down makes so much sense, and why people would want to trade up to the first pick outside of top 10 money. It will make so much sense, we can get pouncey and another pick. Besides, chances are Dan Williams will be a BILL before our pick. And pouncey is seeming more and more like the ultimate need.
Chris Simms signs -again- with the Titans!?!?!?! See sndvl, dumb moves are made all over the league no matter the HC, LOL.
Just a reminder that Klis said we would get Pouncey already two weeks ago, and some bloggers were quick to call him an idiot, it seems like the idea is now growing on people…
bay you are kidding about simms right
No, dead serious, unless Schefter twitter is…
i trust schefter but wow
Baylin
We called Klis an idiot because he said, with the 11 pick Broncos select Pouncey. 1th pick being the operative word. Thats why many called him an idiot. Many on this blog have wanted pouncey for the longest time but said only with a trade down. All klis just did recently was validate the trade down idea. And i just like the reasoning he put behind it of why it oculd happen. Cuz while we wanted it to happen it was like, who would wanna trade up really? Sure some people, but the way he explained it outside of the top 10 area why it is such a pivotal pick and desired one was what i liked about what he said.
As far as Simms, I beleive his dad just keeps pullling strings for him…w/e works, he is a millionaire for a guy that had to do nothing. I wish I was in his position lol. Altho im sure he wants to play and thinks he can. I gave him a break for Redskins game, he was caught of guard but SD game was pathetic.
Maybe the Titans just want Simms to have an inside informant about the Broncos’ system, players and plays, as we play vs. them this season, lol.
11 is definitely too high for Pouncey. It would be awesome if we could get him in the 2nd round. And it looks like yet another team is off the Brandon Marshall market, with the Jets signing Holmes. The possibilities are dwindling, which I count as a good thing. He needs to stay here and work things out with McDaniels.
Ha ha whitebronco, that seems like a lot of effort for just a little insight on one opponent.
There’s also info of the Broncos possibly drafting Iupati at #11. A OG is also needed, he’s the best OG in this draft, and this isn’t such a reach as with Pouncey. Interesting…
Well said TRB,Klis knows #11 pick is too high for Pouncey ,or he knows NOW,we trade down to 17-20 range,he’s predicted to go around 25 or 26,so we get another 3rd pick, and get more help, and as good as Brandon Graham is and as bad as I would like to have him,we are paying Ayers 5 mil this year,LET THE MAN DO HIS JOB.I like Dan Williams but he’s projected to go to Buffalo at #9 pick.So if you ask me we trade down for Pouncey or draft McClain, makes no difference to me,we need help at both positions, and there will be others at both positions later in the draft.simple.
WOW just entered a contest for 2 tickets to go to the draft with Eric Berry, and win an autographed helmet,if I win my boys will go crazy.LOL
There is also Walton, Tennant and Olsen available at C
I personally think it will be best player available that fits the McD mold when we draft in the first round after that i think we will address needs like guard, center and power back if we need to get one. The coaching staff may not see the need for a power back they may think someone we have can do the job already
Haha, trust me, with how many times we failed with Moreno on 4th and 1s…they are DEFINITELY thinking power back which I think we should get gerhart for sure!!
If we trade Marshall, ill only be okay with it if we get either a 1st round pick or 2 second round picks or a 2nd and 3rd rnd pick but its not looking good..
I think for our BEST chance of success for in this draft this year is to trade up and get Pouncey and use the extra pick that we receive from trading to get Gerhart and then work on getting a CB like Ansah and other needs…
What do yall think about that?
broncosfreak mcd cames out and said it was the olines fault not morenos.
dipsh#t
First off, everyone has already said that Moreno has had some running problems with how hes had problems finding the right holes and how his feet gets tangled up from trying to run too hard plus the offensive line didn’t make him fumble the ball…
Secondly everyone has their own opinions and shouldn’t be called out the way you did me, we all talk about and share what each other thinks instead of insulting each other!!
Go to another blog if your going to do that, or they’ll just ban you eventually anyways!
theroyalbroncos what is your problem we were having a civil discussion
Not trying to get in the middle, but we do need a powerback,Moreno is a slash/cut style runner, which is good, but when we need that 3rd or 4th and 1,we need a pounder, which Moreno is not.I think Moreno is going to be good this year, but nothing wrong with a 1-2 punch.
my problem is brocieden king of the brocean the moreno is fine and mcd never said he had trouble finding holes you guys are retarded!
if we are retarded why are you here blogging with us
Hey, if I wanted a cumback from you I would have wiped it off your chin. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, if I wanted a cumback from you I would have wiped it off your chin.
Don’t worry Marsh…
Hes just some KC fan or Raider fan who’s just upset that they’re team can’t have a decent season anymore. Just trying to stir up trouble because they’re blogs they’re all fighting and complaining about their team…So he has to come here to try to make us miserable, good try though
Wow. Classy guy.
yea tell me ab it!
He’s not bothering me he just needs to go get a life.
If the first day of the draft passes and Marsh isn’t traded he will be in Denver next season.
Definitely true, DOOMervilfan. And I really hope it turns out that way.
With a franchise tag Marshall could be in Denver for the next 2 seasons without signing a long term deal. Denver has control over the situation and I think it was a classy move to only put a 1st round tender on him so he could test the market.
Im so glad Jamal Williams and Green came to visit on the same day. Solid signings for the Broncos!
Man, what a disgusting individual “theroyalbroncos” is, I hope the blog administration will ban him for good. How disgusting, pure trash.
I concur…
Anyhow, did anyone catch what Bannan said of Green?:
Bannan said he is excited to be on the same team as a player of Green’s caliber.
“I came out of college with Jarvis,” Bannan said. “I know him, and he’s a great guy and a great player.”
Now who can remember anything starting with “he is a great guy” that any Bronco player has ever said about Marshall? Just saying, we all know he is a great player but that’s obviously not enough for team chemistry.
marshisboss,
I commend you for being a righteous individual!!
Bronc On!!!!!
ILMSDB!!!!
