No matter what the question is, that is the answer.
And that much is true whether it involves one’s job, relationships, weight control, or any other situation one might imagine.
And that is the situation in which the Denver Broncos find themselves after the loss at Kansas City. Many fans and media types which it were otherwise, but it is not. The key factor to punch into the equation, however, is that the situation would not be even slightly different if the Broncos had won against the Chiefs.
No matter what, the season is one quarter over and Denver is an excellent 3-1 at this time.
Would we all like that to be perfect?
Absolutely. But would we still have to play Tampa Bay this week? Yes.
What about every other game on the schedule. Would we still have to play them? Yes.
And when we do play every game, every week, does anyone absolutely know in advance what the weather will be for each one of those games? How about the physical condition of each club, each week? How about the emotional state of each team, each week?
Of course not, none of us does.
So, what are we left with?
Pack your lunch box and go to work every day.
I have often said that the way each team has won the Super Bowl, including the Broncos back to back in 1997 and 1998, is 40 seconds at a time. One play at a time in which each player does his job just the way he is supposed to.
Trivial as this may sound, that is exactly how every administrative support person should do his job as well.
One detail at a time, for the entirely of the season, with absolutely no detail small enough to be ignored or overlooked.
And that is where we are right now.
We are playing Tampa Bay this week, just as the schedule released in April said we would.
And it is absolutely the only game over the which the Broncos can exert any control this week.
You can’t deal what might have been, could have been, should have been, or would have been, if only.
You deal with where you are, what you are and how you are right now.
The season is long, but it is just a succession of “right nows” that have to be dealt with.
Unless one is a vegetarian, one has probably eaten a steak. We all know how to eat a steak.
How do you eat a cow? Can’t be done.
Sure it can, but it has to be one steak at a time.
But the biggest key right now is not to focus on what you think might have happened or should have happened in Kansas City. It does not matter. What did happen is that the Broncos played the first quarter of the season and take a 3-1 record into the next quadrant of play.
You can succeed with the task at hand, but you must give all your attention to that one. The others will all be there in good time.

We are 3-1 with the Bucs coming to town. I just would like to this team play a more aggressive attacking style of football in all three areas. The defense doesn’t defend enough and there’s nothing special about the special teams.
well said
kinda off subject a little but am i the only 1 who would like to see us use the extra pics we have and if need be our 1st rnd to get a bad a** like vandenbausch(dont think i spelt that right) i know shanny will never do it and the titans would be crazy to let him go but i cant help but think how much better our d would look if we woulda made a play for some1 like jared allen when he was up for grabs and maybe john vilma was he was free. i know the best way isnt always to go after free agents we learned that last year but you cant say those 2 wouldnt have helped our d a ton. thoughts?
Not sure about Vilma. How’s he doing this year? I do like Jared Allen though. I’ve always wondered why we let guys like Bertrand Berry and Reggie Hayward get away. I thought they were good when we had them but what ever. Since those guys donned orange and blue we’ve been lucky to have the Browncos and the BUSTS of the ’07 draft.
vilmas not doing to bad, and i dont think marcus thomas is a bust, moss may just need more time remember he only played 4 games last year and this year he doesnt seem to be getting alotta snap i know alotta people will say thats because he did bad in training camp but you gotta remember he broke his leg, kind of an important body part for a d lineman, i say toss him in and let him learn on the go, he must have been doing somthing right for him to catch shannys eye and i would still like to see us use next yrs first rnd on a legit 1st rnd talent rb, though i am glad we didnt take mendenhall this year like i wanted us to you cough on the guy and he gets hurt
Just because Marcus starts it doesn’t rule out bust. How many years did Dan Williams start? He was a bust. There’s nothing about Marcus that says playmaker at least not yet but I’m not sold on him. A body a DT is all I see so far. As for Moss I thought I read that he was healed up by the start of camp. Just because Moss caught Shanny eye doesn’t mean Moss has the goods. I wanted Mandenhall too and I’m glad that we didn’t get him now.
Is there an update on Clifford Russell’s injury?
I read that Russell was able to walk and made the trip back with the team.
I would definitely like to see Vanderbosch or Kerney in the lineup. Even Leonard Little would help to avoid DOOM getting double teamed consistently cause he’s the only threat. Why do you think all the sacks have come from the other side or from some of the second string d-lineman. As crazy as it sounds I would like to see us trade Darrel Jackson to Seattle or Tenesee with a draft pick packaged conditionally with the possibility of a 1st rd pick. I like D-Jax but with Royal, Marsh, and Stokley he wouldn’t start…… and we all know that both the seahawks and the titans could use a quality sure handed veteran receiver like him. He wouldn’t even have to learn the system if he went back to Seattle. How valuable could that be to them right now and their playoff hopes in the NFC. Best of all we are both in different divisions. HMMMMMMM
I simply can’t help it but every time I come to this website I’m praying to see a headline saying ” Broncos get sack machine ” ???????” in trade with the “???????”. I’m a young minister so I hope my prayers will get us lil’ more attention… LOL. All jokes aside..I am really a young minister who happens to be broncos fan. I was really excited to see that Alridge and Selvin are also Christians.
unfortunately the defeat of Denver vs Kansas
really shows the condition of the defense of the Broncos. In short they have no defense, so they will not get anywhere. just shows the foolishness of Shanahan and the mediocrity that has characterized Denver in the last 10 years
I agree, we do need more help on the d-line, and I do agree with Professor Broncs. The Titans do need a wd and if i’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure Albert Haynsworth is a free agent after this year. If I remember correctly he got slapped with the franchise tag but made the same deal Samuels did with the patriot the year before, so why not try and get him? Although I think Shanny will use most of this years picks for defense.
I agree that the Broncos have a good record following the first quarter of the season. The problem is that our team has no attitude. Our defense is reacting what the opposing offense does, not the other way around. Anyone who watched that Steelers/Ravens game last night understands that in order to be successful on defense, you have to be unpredictable. Mike Shanahan is a good coach, but teams are able to make changes to their respective game plans to counter what Shanny does. I rarely see the Broncos make in-game adjustments, and I’ve never really understood why. I think Denver’s offense is explosive, and will probably lead them to 9 or 10 wins. But when it comes down to it, the defense will let us down. Whether it’s a lack of talent, execution or maybe even heart, we’re missing something!
Off subject, just wanted to say that the game against k.c. i think we shoulda use michael pittman alot more, with kc sucking against the run, and i think pittman is a bruiser, and he had a couple of nice runs also..game plan needs to be better, and we need to get pressure on the qb, even if we blitz more, because secondary is a sitting duck with no pressure… on paper defense looks good….fast safety’s great corners…good d-line…but like kc, doom could not get pressure, and i think ekuban could play more with his strength, and moss and doom with speed more so on third downs…GO BRONCOS!!!! beat those bucs..
Broncos Defensive Woes. Maybe it is time for a change at D-line coach.
http://www.milehighsports.com/daily_s…
Please go in and read this, Jacob Burney arrived in the Mile High City in 2002, It is time to let him go, the D-Line is a mess.
I am among the many who would love to see the Broncos pick up a big time playmaker. But we have to keep in mind that the Broncos salary cap is fairly tight, and time is ticking on Brandon Marshall and a the need to renegotiate – extend his contract (He is only making about $450K this year). If he has another good year he will expect a HUGE contract.
So, its great to dream about all these great players that we want to sign on defense, but can we afford them?
Offense is and will be solid for sometime to come. My concern for the offense is that they have now become a pure passing team. I hope they don’t forget to include running in the game plan. Also not a big fan of the running back rotation. I feel as though a running back doesn’t get into a groove if there in for one series at a time.
The defense on the other hand is and will be bad until the D line troubles are addressed. It’s sad to know that if the offense isn’t clicking on all cylinders that the defense cannot do it’s part to put teams away. Let’s face it, there were 3 games played, where the game was secured by halftime. Then the defense let’s the opposing team right back into it. Damn!! if you’ve beat down your opponent, now it’s time to go for the kill. Defense should be flying around and demorolizing the opposing offense. It is simple, if they had talent on the D line it would be happening.
Unfortunately for us fans it’s gonna be a year of nail bitting and cussing at the TV. I for one am hoping that the offense snaps out of it’s funk this week and puts on a clinic for the Buc’s. I also am hoping that our offense will just outscore everyone of their opponents for the rest of the season and make it to the big dance. Wishful thinking? I know. Our defense will ruin this season for us and there’s nothing anyone can do. Right defensive scheme, wrong personnel.
Go BRONCOS!!!! Broncos Fan 4 Life.
Give the defense a brreak guys. Many of these guys are first and second year players. They will get better! Shanny seems to be gathering as many draft pics as possible, I see him being ready to make a move when the time is right! The one question I do have on defense is thatseldom do we see our D lineman shooting the gaps, mostly they are immediately engaged with O-lineman and can’t get off their blocks. Is that a coaching issue or a learning issue? Go Broncos!
The fact is, is that the defense is not good. Even if they would have won against KC, the problems still exist. This creates a false front. They were given the SD game. You can be undefeated for a bit, and still be terrible. The strength of the offense is passing for sure, but don’t Dan Reeves this thing and put all the pressure on Cutler. I think they should establish a running game, commit to it, and allow the line to cut block.
The good thing management is doing is stock pilling draft picks. This will allow for moves to be made in the off season and draft, to shore up the defense.
The other thing that can help here, which happened in part when Denver won the super bowls, was that John Elway, EddyMac, some others I think renegotiated their contracts-took a pay cut, to bring in quality free agents to get this team to the superbowl. Sacrifice to win.
i agree also all you can do at this point is continue to get better everyweek and learn from your mistackes and grow on the things you did well. go hard every week and do the right things and good things will come. i like the fact that we put jack williams in and im sure the coaches will continue to make adjustments as the season goes on.
Practice Practice Practice
BUT practice the right things.
1) Jay follow your reads. You have tunnel vision for Brandon, or Eddie or Stokley on 3rd. Hey Scheffler is still open over the middle.
2) The young OL is excellent at pass blocking but needs time to learn the zone blocking for running. They will.
3) Bob Slowik, blitzing is also part of a defense. Put some pressure on the QB because right now the QB has way too much time to kill our DB’s.
4) Missed tackles and gap assignment excuses on Monday are not exceptable any more. Play different players.
WOW,
dlmyers nice job . I’d like to add commit to Pittman, and please Jay work on the little things like selling the play action better for a more ballanced O.
Shotgunn looks great, but that does’nt help our run much. Do the little things well and the big ones will come.
When you do things right no one will know you’ve done anything at all.
i agree re-up Bmarsh. Trade a first round pic near or around draft day..thats when its the easy….get someone fierce…..Djack is the man when he is healthy like the first week…we can go 5 wide!!!…..
Dan Williams wasnt a bust…just for denver…he played nice in KC…didnt he come back to denver for a stint??
every bronco fan knows how to win this game on sunday!!! knock B.Griese down everyplay and make him throw stupid passes!!! neways…go denver….RIP DWILL.NASH…..and HOF ROD AND TD and ATWATER!! much luv

Aldridge is going to be a stud when he comes back healthy….he has the quicks of Royal and played just as well in preseason and camp…cannot wait for him to be nice 3rd down back and change of pace back!!! with hopefully TOrain…being are bruiser…every down back…!!!

you guys are all dreaming to think that we will get vandenbosch or vilma. It will never happen. We have all the talent in the world on defense we just need to blitz a little more and stop having dj cover people. not that he is bad but he is like merriman a beast at putting pressure on the quarterback. Look at chicago’s defense you can’t tell me that they have more talent on their defense than us. They just blitz a hell of a lot more and get after the qb. Every QB we faced this year has had all day long to throw the ball on us except for Russell on the Raiders and we all saw what happened there.
First off, I would like to say that the D is getting way more trash talk than they deserve. We don’t need to trade anyone or get anyone new. Yes I said it. What we need to do is get special teams on track. If we can pin opponents inside the 20 at least on occasion, our D will start looking better. I do think that we need to blitz more and use more man coverage, but other than that, I think we are fine. Have faith in our boys. Doom is going to come on strong the better his hand feels, and I have a feeling Tampa is going to get the bad end of that deal. Go Broncos. 13-3
B-Marsh=#1 I think you copied and pasted my comment cuz I entered the wrong password apparently twice now.
Anyway the fix to not getting QB PRESSURE is not running a 3-4 and dropping 8 into coverage! The fix to not getting QB PRESSURE is sending more guys AKA: BLITZING!
I mean I remember reading when we signed Boss, that he felt under utilized with the lions cuz he is a great blitzer. So man mix it up, we have 2 great blitzing line backers. Send Dj, then send Boss, then send Nate and have Dj play mic. Cuz I think if Webster blitzes he will play in more control his mentality will be “QB SACK QB SACK” rather than “ITS A RUN ITS A RUN, SHOOT HE CUT BACK” and be out of position.
Plus it puts our db’s back in more man, which really is what they are better at. I mean QB’s don’t look champs way if he’s on a receiver, but when they see zone, they look back cuz they know the receiver could be on the outside of champ’s zone. Also they hold coverage longer in man, which gives our dl, and HOPEFULLY A BLITZER OR TWO a better chance of a sack!
Oh yeah, also final note. Monodone, dlmyers had great points. But the thing is:
It’s not Jay’s fault for not selling the play action great. We all know that is what Shanny expects most from his QB’s, and Jay really does it probably near the best if not the best. Here is the problem you worded wrong. Should have said, Jay I know you love to throw it, and throw it hard, but tell your coaches to use more running plays, “and like you said committ to Pittman more.”
Because the problem isn’t Jay’s selling of the play action, cuz the times it didn’t fool the defense, I remember it fooling the camera guy. So he does it well, but a defense knows, they’ll throw it because we never run the ball!
We have to mix it up and run more for play action to be more effective in my opinion. Get the dl wanting to stop the run so much they over persue, then we can cut back and thats where the big yards are. sorry for the long posts
The next Sunday the Broncos are going to lose against the Bucs, and the wonderful defense of the Broncos will be displayed as the worst in the NFL,
is the beginning of 6 victories and 10 defeats in 2008,
and another year full of mediocrity and nothing happens,
because we are tired of hearing the excuse of Shanahan and not do anything about it
RNST if you think so bad of the Denver Broncos, why don’t you pick a new place to spend your time. Our defense is far from perfect, but in no way are we even close to a 6-10 team. Get real.
Your exactly right!
If the broncos can go 3-1 in each quarter of the season they’ll be in better shape the most of us expected them to be in!
