One other memory I have of Alzado. My mom has a picture of me sitting on his lap at the old Cinderella City mall. I think it was so sort of radio promotion. it was me Alzado, I think Larry Green and some dude in an old pilot hat??? I think it was a dj from kimn radio

Jim, This was a great piece. Lyle was an early hero of mine. After a pre-season game in 1978, one in which Denver lost to S.F., Lyle came out and signed autographs for us fans. Some players did not bother. However Alzado not only signed, but seemed to enjoy it. Of course when he went to L.A., I could not stand him. But after his football career ended, I again found myself drawn to him in that late 80′s T.V. show; the one where he was a teacher by day and a masked wrestler on the side. Then, in his last days, he became a very sympathetic figure as he was battling cancer. It saddened me a great deal. I realize that it was somewhat self induced, but it was still tough to see him in the shape he was in. Thanks for the memory, Jim.

That was a good read. I was living in Gunnison and remember watching that fight on t.v. with my dad.

I don’t know if this is true or not, but some where a long time ago I had heard a rumor that Red Miller had warned Alzado that if he went through with the fight with Ali that he would get traded. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

It’s amazing to see how the sport of boxing has declined over the years. When i was a kid, everyone knew who the heavy weight champ was. You had Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Spinks, Holyfield, Tyson and so on. And now it’s Vladmir Klitchko? And in my mind, he’s nothing compared to what I grew up watching.

I’m with you, Bay. I watched that fight on TV live. Otis Sistrunk, Lyle Alzado, John Matusak and Jack Tatum, there was a group of “interesting” personalities! The Toos had been on something like 8 teams before he landed in Oakland, Sistrunk never played college ball, and Alzado was in the midst of a mid-life crisis and into the middle of that walks a rookie DL from Villanova named Long. When he was drafted, I honestly didn’t know the Villanova played football! Neal Colzie said Tatum was so mean as a child his mother fed him with a slingshot! That team was the strangest collection of misfits and odds and ends that has ever been assembled in the history of football. The one question I always had about them was, How did they stay out of jail long enough to play?

Thanks for the great story Jim. I remember him being a character and you reminded me of one of the reasons why. So sad that he met such a tragic end.
