Record Day For Marshall

December 14th, 2009 - 10:55am by jim_saccomano

You never know what you will see when you attend or tune into a sports event.

Sunday at Indianapolis, the Colts just had too much overall for the Broncos, although Denver had some opportunities after falling behind 21-0.

But a shining light for the Broncos was the play of wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who truly had a day for the ages in setting a new NFL record with 21 receptions — an astonishing single-game total.

He had 200 receiving yards with two touchdowns, and the 21 catches were six more than any other player in the league has had in a single game this year. He surpassed the previous record, which was 20 by Terrell Owens.

Marshall now has had two of the top four single-game performances in NFL history. He had 18 at home against the Chargers in 2008, which currently is tied for third best all-time.

If those stats are not enough of a “wow” factor, consider that Marshall had 12 first downs receiving Sunday at Indy (five on third down) — 12 is a record for any Bronco receiver in a single game and ranks fourth in all-time NFL history.

Marshall went over 1,000 yards receiving at Indy with three games to go, and he is on pace for a third 100-catch season.

He was targeted by quarterback Kyle Orton for 28 passes, and that is the highest total in the NFL since at least the 1994 season — a 15-year span.

The 200 reception yards by Marshall were the most by an AFC player in any game this year (fourth overall), and they represent the third highest total in the Broncos’ 50-year history.

That was Marshall’s eighth career game with at least 10 catches, the most by a player through his first four seasons in NFL history.

His two scores brought the Broncos back from a 21-0 deficit against the Colts in their home park and within five of Indianapolis before the home team had a long sustained drive late in the game to secure the win and keep the ball out of Marshall’s hands, or that record might be even higher and the Colts might not be undefeated today.

Sometimes, when you tip your hat to a performance, you just don’t have a hat that’s big enough.

wow,, i never realized he had 12 first downs…that just blows people away..
and by the way, he again eclipsed the 1000 yd mark this season. he might be well on his way for 100 receptions too..
Good job Brandon Marshall, by far THE MOST DANGEROUS RECEIVER in the game today….not Fitz, not Johnson, not Boldin, not even Desean pull something like this even so against a passrushing Colts team

I didn’t get to watch the game since it wasn’t broadcasted in my area. I did notice a few things. We won the turnover margin but I’m guessing we didn’t convert those into points. We didn’t give up on the run but were weren’t very productive. Manning threw 4 TDs he is Manning but was the pass D not doing very well or what? We’re still in it though. I thought it could have been a blow out but we played them pretty good. Honestly if we can play the Colts like that we can play a lot of teams.
Too bad about McBath hope he heals up fast for next season.
Even for a loss we played pretty descent it looks like. Marshall is a BEAST. I wish Gruden would have been doing the game I can about imagine how many times he would’ve used that term. LOL!!!

    Go Broncos!!!!

  4. tnalen66 says:

    SIGN THE BEAST!!!

  5. broncos504 says:

sign the man and when is eddie royal we need him to make some plays

BRANDON THE BEAST MARSHALL!!! The man truly is a beast and it figures that someone also nicknamed baby T.O would break T.Os record…..A sad loss but Marshalls performance was definitely a silver lining…and if he breaks 100 catches which im sure he will, he will probably be one of the few recievers to ever do so wwith different QBs in back to back years…wes welker beign the only other I can think of. The sky is the limit for this kid, he has been gifted with great size, speed, hands, and his route running is getting better. Even mroe impressive is the chemistry he has developped with Orton. Gotta get used to your QB before you can make games like these……Eddie Royal we need you too…Gaffney did well as well.

Marshall has repented of his transgressions and he should be rewarded for he’s one of our greatest assets. With Brandon Marshall on our side, like the titular character from What About Bob, I FEEL GOOD, I FEEL GREAT, I FEEL WONDERFUL. GO BRONCOS!!!

Pretty sure they’re gonna give him the franchise tag this year and see if he makes it through an off-season without an issue. I would. They’ll make a contract offer next year.

Need to lock up Doom for a long time!

Just hope Mcd is not play the games to make Marshall happy so he will stick around.

  12. Jasper0724 says:

Way to go Brandon! You are, by far, the best reciever in the league in my eyes. Please don’t ask for a trade. You have to stay with the Broncos!

  13. Crush Arizona says:

Brandon Marsha Marsha Marshall, great game the franchise tag will be there for sure congradulations. But I would like to see you really give it hell like you did in your rookie campain I remember saying (the kid runs like Gail Sayers) now you seem to be running like your are playing to not get hurt . I think I may be wrong…..NOT!!! let go Luke use the force and let slip the dogs of WAR and You just might find a Superbowl Ring at the end of the season.

  14. broncofan2639 says:

Congratulations to Brandon Marshall. Its fun to break records & to set records, but I think Marshall will agree with me when I say it would have been more fun if we would have beat a undefeated team like the colts. Again Brandon Congratulations. I think you are the top receiver in the NFL.
