Recently some members of the Denver press wondered how much press quarterback Jay Cutler does on a weekly basis.
In addition to being a tremendous young quarterback, Jay Cutler is the most popular Bronco in terms of press requests, so the key is to manage and coordinate his time in this regard.
As you can imagine, this is very unpopular to members of the press, because their desire, in a perfect media world, is whatever access they desire, whenever they desire it.
But at the same time they are aware (sort of) of how busy someone like Jay Cutler is. At the end of the day, and at the start of the day, every day, it’s football, football and football.
And what we do, what we ask, has to be controlled so that the player can concentrate on that part of his job that is the one for which he was hired.
In actuality, there is no other quarterback in the NFL as busy as Jay Cutler, because of his well documented health situation that has made him a key national role model in the most positive sense for the cause of Type-1 diabetes.
He monitors himself and takes care of his condition on his own regularly, but when the mantle of spokesman is given to someone, whether by request or by life’s fates, it cannot be removed. Thus, Jay is the role model for a large group of people in everything he does, and he is aware of that at all times. All this and he is just in his third season and is just 25. It’s amazing how much he does, but he can’t do it alone.
So in a way, he has more on his plate that many other quarterbacks who have a lot more years in the NFL.
Still, Jay finds time for the press, with the supervision and control of the Broncos’ PR department.
He meets the Denver press on Wednesdays and again after every game.
To a lot of people, that probably seems like all he does.
But excluding those two weekly press conferences, he has done five telephone conference calls with the press corps from Oakland, San Diego, Kansas City, New England and Miami.
He has had six one-on-one interviews with local writers so far this year (we log all his interviews to make sure his time is balanced and he can focus on football).
He has done major national interviews with Denver resident Rick Reilly of ESPN.com, The Sporting News, ESPN television (nice job by Rachel Nichols doing background and being a real professional in her prep work), plus ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption (with Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon).
Besides that, Marshall Faulk of NFL Network flew to Denver to do a sit-down interview with Jay (a great piece), and he also has done guest spots on Fox Sports’ The Best Damn Sports Show Period and a national radio interview with Jim Gray (that one went international via the Armed Forces Radio Network, including to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan).
Jay has his own weekly TV show, “Jay Cutler Live” on CBS 4, as you might have seen, and does a weekly pre-game show on KOA radio.
Also, Jay makes a call-in to The Ride Home (with Dave Logan) every week.
Plus, every week Jay sits down with the announcers, producer and director of the network doing the game, usually on Saturday, to brief them on his condition and answer some questions so they can get ready for their Sunday telecast.
So it might seem to some that he does not do as much as some would like, and it is absolutely true that our PR department controls every minute of this media time, because Jay Cutler’s time is pivotal to the Broncos–but he does more than any other player.
The key is time management on a weekly level.
All the requests (and most are actually refused) that “make the cut” are presented to Jay, and he and the PR department mutually determine which ones are the most valuable in terms of exposure and use of time, and then those–and only those–are set up for the week.
All the others disappear, at least for that week, and sometimes forever.
There is a lot that goes into playing quarterback in the NFL, and working with the press is an important part of that schedule.
But that’s why they call it a schedule. It has to be scheduled.
And that is to everybody’s benefit, but most of all it has to be to Jay’s.

go get em jay, we love to watch you play
Jay go make plays. We love you bro!
ok, please dont ignore my question like always,
what happened to anthony aldridge?
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS IF THE DEFENSE AINT STRAIGHT AFTER THE BYE WEEK WE NEED TO DO WHAT SAN DIEGO DID TO THEY DEFENSE COORD.
broncoboy1993 aldridge broke his ankle in green bay preseason game bro. where have you been, this is old news. Yo Jay i can tell your getting pist off at some of the stupid questions these reporters are asking you. dont let it get to you bro just stay cool give them what they want to hear and keep it moving. we know you have bigger things to worry about like playing ball and getting better. just stay positive and be a good person and work hard and good things will happen for you. you have some great weapons on offense just got to keep them healthy so you can have them all at once and shanny will go out and get you some more defense in the off season. tell pat to go out and get a big time defender or 2 in free agency, this team needs a couple more veteran leaders that have already proven them selves. also tell him to take the best player avail in the draft on defense, doesnt matter what position we need them all. cant pass up on the next big thing because we need a certian position might even need to take a running back if torian doesnt work out. if pat and shanny make the right moves i think you will have a ring on your finger within 3 years and maybe even sooner depending on how aggressive they are in getting you some help.
I can’t imagine doing all that crap. poor Jay
that must be not only tiring but also boring as hell, I mean it’s not like reporters ask too many different questions lol
can anyone tell me who is gonna be backing up jay?
Darrel Hackney
Love this kid!!!!!!!!
That piece he did with Marshall Faulk was a very good one, you should watch it if you haven’t. He’s got a good sense of humor, just love him!!
He’s gonna be well-rested after this bye and I’ve got a good feeling about him and how he’ll be playing for the rest of the season. He’s going to be like the Cutler we were begging for when Plummer was still here. I know Denver is infamous for their running game and I don’t want us to lose that but I love watching this kid throw a football. He’s VERY good at what he does and he’s made some huge key plays for us at crucial times or just to get a 1st down… I want to see the offense come up with some unpredictable ways to nicely balance out the running game we’re known for (and bring it back strong!!) and Jay’s incredible passing game.
As for the media attention, I’m sure it sucks for him but like it said at the end – “he and the PR department mutually determine” – what he’s going to do for the media. I’m sure its the most annoying thing to have 20 different reporters ask the same question in 20 different ways… as if Jay would have no idea they’re asking him the same question 20 different times. I would be so annoyed. But I am glad that he keeps us updated, I love watching his post-game interviews… man is he fidgity!!!!
I’ve got alot of faith in this guy and what he’s going to do for this team and bring it back to its feet. He’s got the talent, he just needs to show it and use it like there’s no tomorrow. I Trust in #6!!!!
Have faith Broncos Country!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!
The problems the Broncos have are not with Cutler – it’s the OTHER backs who seem to fumble at every opportunity, and the defense that consistently just pushes someone and thinks that is a “tackle”. Know what? EVERYONE is big in the NFL – if you expect to tackle them, then that means TACKLE, not bump.
Like I said, this is not Jay’s fault – he’s doing the very best he can, but when receivers cough up the ball and the defense can’t tackle, there’s not much that can be done. Sorry, but this goes to Shanny and mgmt – get back to the basics and fundamentals of the game and the rest should fall into place. If that doesn’t work start in-house fines for each dropped ball, each missed tackle, etc. Max fine on each – if they don’t listen to the words, they’ll understand the finances – screw up and get penalized. Pretty much a no brainer to play well if you don’t get paid for playing lousy!
Jay Cutler is the primary impetus of our success. Therefore, all of you haters shut up and watch as he leads us to a championship. Fools mock, but they shall mourn when Cutler becomes one of the best signal-callers of this generation. Keep up the good work, Jay!
If you love this kid so much 07elway…. WHY DON’T YOU MARRY HIM?!?!
He carries himself really well, I have not yet seen the interview with Faulk, so if you want to get me a link darling I’d love to watch it with you and some little football shaped cookies! Sound like a date, eh eh?
I really liked the PTI interview with him, loved how Wilbon said he thinks that Cutler has a stronger arm than Elway. I know that made a lot of us mad, but I have to say that I like him saying that comment much more than him just laying back and worshiping Elway. Don’t get me wrong Elway is far better and everything but it’s not like Jay said that he was better or that he would do this or that, and John couldn’t or didn’t. He just simply said his arm was stronger. Which is probably true and you have to admit, from a publicity stand point it was smart on his end! Planning for the future after football is over, that’s using your head kid!
But ya let me know the time and place babe!!
You’re a little stinker, 2champ4pickSIX. And you know what, maybe I will marry him – HA HA!!!
I hate to think that someone might just be better at something than Elway because ever since the day I was born Elway has been the center of my life. I grew up watching him play, my dad taught me everything I know about football (yeah, & he was a Packers fan and I ended up being a Broncos fan, thank GOD). So I will now admit Cutler does have a stronger arm than Elway’s but he earned his way to say that. I didn’t think he’d be so blunt about just saying that for all the nation to hear but its very true. However… he may have a stronger arm NOW but he needs to work on making his passes and arm ACCURATE like Elway did. Elway was able to put forth a strong arm like no one had ever seen and at the same time he was accurate with his throws.
As for that little “date” – last time I checked it was somewhere on nfl.com. And you can watch it at any time and anywhere you want to!!! I would like one of those football shaped cookies though.
And who you calling darling??? You are a stinker.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
For the record….Alridge did nto brake his ankle in the Green Bay pre-season game because he started in the last pre-season gam against the Cards and scorched them for 100+ yards with the second and third line man plus Hackney at QB vs. the Cards 1st defensive unit. He was very explosive like Sproles from SD. All they said was he had similar injury to the one Torain had in his senior year at College but not as bad. Honestly he probably should have been back by now but who knows. Maybe the Mastermind has something up his sleeve but I do know Alridge and Torain would make a nice Thunder and Lightning combo.
Sniff sniff….. sniff! Cover your nose guys I’m posting again!
I believe the Alridge problem is that we placed him on IR because we didn’t forsee Hall being paid off by NE’s owner to cough up the ball 3 times. We were hoping we had enough depth with Young, Pitt, Hall and the T-Train when he came back that carrying 5 RB’s on the active roster would kill depth in other positions we needed. But someone said it in one of the other blogs, that to claim him off of IR we would have to go through some thing that starts with the worst team records in the league, and they all have the option of claiming him first, and in that case like that person said…. he wouldn’t make it to where we get to claim him. It’s the same reason that with Osi Umenyura’s (spelling?) progress that the Giants haven’t claimed him off of IR. He would be ready in time for the playoffs but again same boat, wouldn’t make through the strings to where they could claim him. So it’s better to leave him on IR and not have him at all til next year then to not have him at all. But I agree 100%, with him and the T-Train next year, it will be a Lightning (ka-chow!) and Thunder (ka-chooga chooga chooga) hahaha had to do it!
!!!!!!!SOCNORB OG
Okay, I just gotta ask you 2champ4pickSIX, are you trying to be funny again by writing GO BRONCOS!!! backwards??? You need to stop writing all this funny stuff (ka-chooga chooga chooga) – you’re making my sides split!!!!!!!! I’m kidding by the way!!! Did you watch it yet… huh… did ya, its a good one. I’m sure on nfl.com its still there to watch. I’m waiting for my football shaped cookie, mister.
I suppose I should talk football while I’m on here… um, can’t wait to see what Torain does when he comes back. I’m just really hoping our offense can pull off some great plays and our D gets back on track.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
Yes, I’m posting AGAIN… so chill out!!!
I’m gonna be nice to you 2champ4pickSIX so you don’t have to go searching for this, but I did. Here’s the link to that interview… http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80b8e3a4.
If that doesn’t work, the just go to nfl.com, under Network Highlight click more videos, click on the Tab that says “TEAMS”, go to Denver Broncos, then find Cutler’s name under ‘Browse Videos’ and the video is called “Sunday Sitdown: Jay Cutler”. Its about 5:30 long. Alright I think I’ve done my part of this little “date” – go get me my cookie!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting again, sorry to inform the link did not work for me. However you very detailed instructions while making me feel small and dumb allowed me to find the video.
Just more proof that how he carries himself is just like a star on the rise should.
Not much more to say being as this is just a thank you note rather than an actual post on the blog!…
I knew Jay was busy, but wow! Do they actually schedule in a time for him to eat and to sleep? It’s a good thing for him to be so busy, keeps him out of trouble.
I love him and I am glad that he does all of this media stuff. Makes life happier for me.
Trade this guy Jay Culter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE
Yeah – great presence…3 picks today. Granted the referees are still making up for one bad call that went the Broncos way 7 weeks ago by making absolutely horrible calls ever since going against us. Still, when you can’t establish even a half-a$$ed running game, and garner a 2nd worst in history of 14 total yards, no matter what Cutler dues, it’s not going to take us far.
Here’s a little tip for Cutler…if you’re down by this much and can’t get the running game going, you simply MUST start airing it out sooner. Additionally, if you want to manage the clock to even give yourself a chance, you simply cannot make throws to the middle of the field. You’ve got the talent, and the intelligence…you simply just need better management (and that’s not your fault…)
Now, as for the coaching, if you see the running game not getting going, why do you keep running it up the middle??? Not gonna happen; shuttle passes, sideline passes and the deep ball will spread the defense out and then you might give the chance to actually get the running game open, but until the defense is spread, you’re not going to do anything without a marquis running back (of which we have none in the starting lineup right now)…
The bottom line here is coaching. The fundamentals are still lacking and no amount of 4th quarter efforts will overcome a lack of understanding when it comes t the basics. If you blitz, then the secondary needs to come up and cover the 10-15 yard area. 3rd down coverage on that play was absolutely pathetic…
Change” Chabelo” Cutler, the same Brian Griese’s history
