The trade bringing quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos has seriously ramped up Broncomania talk in the Mile High City, even allowing for the high level always present among our fans.
Any time a quarterback is involved, everyone gets very excited, and in this case, the credential portfolio which Brady Quinn carries to the Broncos includes that of being the all time winningest quarterback at Notre Dame. While with the Irish, Quinn set 36 school records while playing for the coach who stands as one of the mentors in the career of Josh McDaniels.
The excitement is palpable, and of course that is without even including into the mix the fine season that Kyle Orton enjoyed in his first year here.
It is going to be very exciting for our fans, and very likely will bring an unrestrained number of stories from our press corps.
Once upon a time in our press room one of the writers was sitting there thinking, finally saying to no one in particular that he did not know what to write for the next day’s paper.
A veteran scribe at the next typing station heard this and stopped typing, leaned over to the rest of the room and said, “Let me tell you something. If you are not sure what to write, always write about the quarterback. And the next day, follow it up.”
In other words, there is no such thing as “regular” attention or news coverage when it comes to the quarterback position, and when it happens in Denver with the Broncos, where 2010 will be the 41st consecutive season of sellouts at home, the press would be crazy not to feed that excitement.
And they would also be wrong.
The right story, every day, is the big one. It is the one that the fans are talking about.
The Broncos have added four excellent players to the defense this offseason, virtually assuring an increase in talent, depth and competition for a unit that played well last year, but one has to be very naïve not to realize that the buzz starts under center.
The Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche are having excellent seasons and the Colorado Rockies are about to start a major league baseball campaign with legitimate high levels of expectations. The Broncos’ off-season conditioning program is now underway and that should be a footnote right now, but it is not.
The fan imagination races with the prospects of a highly competitive training camp involving a solid incumbent coming off a fine season, a number one draft choice with one of the finest college pedigrees produced in recent seasons, and second-year pro Tom Brandstater, who will be looking to show his own development after his rookie year.
You might as well embrace The Buzz, because when it starts this early in the off-season, there is no shutting it down.
For the players, there is a lot of hard work involved in preparing, studying, working out and just getting ready overall, but it is a big plus to be able to do that work in an environment of high excitement.
And that’s a great fact of life for Bronco fans building up to the NFL draft, which will add its own craziness to the mix in the upcoming month.

Huge props to the Broncos management for going out and getting Quinn!! He was not a fit and was not given a fair shot in Cleveland. I think this kid has huge potential and now he is playing for team that he wants to play for. Look out, I feel a big year coming on!!
the fact is dis ppl orton sucked ass n da preseason last yr but he was a beast n da season then he gets hurt which we seen how important he was fo us da only bad game he had n my eyes was da last game of the season but he had no weapons on the otha hand draft dan williams out of tennessee n da 1st n if florida center pouncy is their n da second grab him them r our pressin needs
Heres my whole take on the situation…I think Orton definitely starts the whole season…and will put up uncharacteristic numbers. However, the fact the Brady is so hungry for the job, (a hunger he always demonstrates, characteristic of all of the greats) will win him the starting job in the long run. Honestly, I see it as a Joe Montana/Steve Young sort of rivalry; only on lowered expectations. While Orton will succeed in pushing us over the playoff hump and perhaps even win us a bunch of games in the post season, he wont get us to the Bowl. However, Quinn could actually end up being our next QB of the future. He undoubtedly shows a never quit never say die attitude and when given the chance, can live up to his FIRST ROUND potential – much like a very familiar Denver QB legend. Im just saying…
Quinn is the future quarterback for the broncos and we should be able to win the big game in a year or two or three or four.
RB Justin Fargas was cut by the Raiders and will be visiting the Saints.
Justin is the son of Antonio Fargas who used to play Huggy Bear back in the ’70s on Starsky & Hutch.
Quinn will have a legitimate chance at beating out Orton for the starting job. We all knew Simms wasn’t going to beat out anyone last season, he barely beat out Brandstater. This year it will actually be a competition, which is good. I would rather see a good competition that Brady sufficing with being a backup. Which also leads me to believe whoever gets the starting job will affect the playcalling. I think with Quinn in there we’d have a better chance at taking a longer shot down field since he’s got a little better arm strength. Plus our defense should be much more improved from last season.
Depending on how quickly Quinn can pick up the system, which he is familiar with, he should have a good chance. He’s got some of those intangibles you look for in a QB. Plus he’s a bit more mobile and agile that Orton, which could add another factor teams will need to watch for. Orton’s not going to outrun anyone, but Quinn’s got a little quickness to his step and he could pick up the 4-5 yards on a scramble.
Saints will need another back if they should happen to lose Bell.
We have some quality under center now. I f Orton is hurt, not so much panicking this time around, now we have another 1st rounder at QB who is a little bit more mature than Jay Cutler and more of a leader, I wouldn’t give Quinn the job right away, but this move obviously says we want Quinn as are starter in the future. My only question is, where does that leave Orton?
Orton will be gone next year.
yea man I dont see Kyle being here next year we will most likely give him the chance to start for another team that will really need him. It wont take Quinn long to get this system under his belt but he still needs a receiver! Please football gods, just for once can we actually keep one of our star players?? We need marshall, no matter how you slice it he is probably the biggest receiving threat in the league and that cant be replaced through this years draft. on the upside, getting Quinn pretty much guarantees we dont waste a pick on a mediocre QB which this draft is chalk full of. I swear if they had used one of our picks on like mcCoy or even worse Tebow, I would have strangled someone. (probably Bowlen I dont know what he was thinking when he said he wanted a QB taken in the draft)
It’s hard to say how this season will go with the addition of Quinn. I do like it on one lvl at least, the guy is a competitor and will do what it takes to get the job done. Orton had a mediocre season last year. It was great that he was among the top in fewest INT’s thrown last year, but his other numbers were average. Eternal I agree 110% that we need to keep Marshall, he is argueably the best the receiver in the league. This years draft is not one to be building the receiving corps. We also need to hold on to Elvis, the guy led the league in sacks last year. That should tell you the guy can and will play.
yea zbailey this years draft has alot of good slot threats but no real big physical jump ball beast receivers
anyone know what quinns new number is by any chance????
I know this doesn’t account for much, but did anyone else notice how much Orton dominated in the milk dud uniforms at the beginning but once we moved to the regular colors he got hurt and his performance dwindled? Maybe we should wear milk duds all year round lol.
I like this trade though. In any event, he’s way better than simms was. I wanna see how Orton does in his 2nd year. I wanna see all of the quarterbacks flourish. As for what happens to Orton down the road. Either a needy team takes him, or we consider him as our reliable back up with Brandstater. Never hurts to have good back ups.
