QB Trade Always Brings Excitement

March 16th, 2010 - 4:14pm by jim_saccomano

The trade bringing quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos has seriously ramped up Broncomania talk in the Mile High City, even allowing for the high level always present among our fans.

Any time a quarterback is involved, everyone gets very excited, and in this case, the credential portfolio which Brady Quinn carries to the Broncos includes that of being the all time winningest quarterback at Notre Dame. While with the Irish, Quinn set 36 school records while playing for the coach who stands as one of the mentors in the career of Josh McDaniels.

The excitement is palpable, and of course that is without even including into the mix the fine season that Kyle Orton enjoyed in his first year here.

It is going to be very exciting for our fans, and very likely will bring an unrestrained number of stories from our press corps.

Once upon a time in our press room one of the writers was sitting there thinking, finally saying to no one in particular that he did not know what to write for the next day’s paper.

A veteran scribe at the next typing station heard this and stopped typing, leaned over to the rest of the room and said, “Let me tell you something. If you are not sure what to write, always write about the quarterback. And the next day, follow it up.”

In other words, there is no such thing as “regular” attention or news coverage when it comes to the quarterback position, and when it happens in Denver with the Broncos, where 2010 will be the 41st consecutive season of sellouts at home, the press would be crazy not to feed that excitement.

And they would also be wrong.

The right story, every day, is the big one. It is the one that the fans are talking about.

The Broncos have added four excellent players to the defense this offseason, virtually assuring an increase in talent, depth and competition for a unit that played well last year, but one has to be very naïve not to realize that the buzz starts under center.

The Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche are having excellent seasons and the Colorado Rockies are about to start a major league baseball campaign with legitimate high levels of expectations. The Broncos’ off-season conditioning program is now underway and that should be a footnote right now, but it is not.

The fan imagination races with the prospects of a highly competitive training camp involving a solid incumbent coming off a fine season, a number one draft choice with one of the finest college pedigrees produced in recent seasons, and second-year pro Tom Brandstater, who will be looking to show his own development after his rookie year.

You might as well embrace The Buzz, because when it starts this early in the off-season, there is no shutting it down.

For the players, there is a lot of hard work involved in preparing, studying, working out and just getting ready overall, but it is a big plus to be able to do that work in an environment of high excitement.

And that’s a great fact of life for Bronco fans building up to the NFL draft, which will add its own craziness to the mix in the upcoming month.

But FTR we need WEAPONS haha, yes we do need a center and badly, Dusin Fry seems solid but I doubt he is starter material. We need a good center.

  2. weareamr says:

Love the WEAPONS comment even if its sarcastic. Remeber back to last year when we were all screaming for “D” with the first pick. Just you see who the first pick will be… at 11 or something else. And I know what everyone else thinks but all bet 99% including me were wrong when our pick came around last year. Who called the “try-hard-get-up-quick-Moreno” pick last year? All you O-line pickers I bet..(lil sarcasm) thanks BroncoAussie. Go Broncos!!!

  3. marshisboss says:

Anybody knows which teams we should be playing this year?

  4. weareamr says:

Does the sarcasm get me in the club? Go Broncos!!!

  5. BroncoAussie says:

Haha yeah thought it was a good laugh, well last year we signed a heap of RBs and Secondary players, we then drafted a RB and a number of secondary players.

So this year we have signed alot of D-lineman, so we will probably draft more d lineman.

  6. weareamr says:

like the reasoning. Your probably on-line, but I and appearently only I want some help on the Offensive skill positions, like some more WEAPONS. Go Broncos!!!

  7. BroncoAussie says:

I think we resigned Josh Barrett for another year.

  8. BroncoAussie says:

We don’t need him, he is just one big PR problem

  9. marshisboss says:

    Thank you aussie

  10. BroncoAussie says:

    Not a problem marshisboos

  11. BroncoAussie says:

    Tennessee – Too Close
    Arizona – Too Close
    San Francisco* – Beat
    Baltimore – Too Close

Haha I have atleast 10 wins this year and 2 loses, the others can go either way

  12. BeastFromEast92 says:

    boos

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

That’s a helluva lot easier schedule than we had last year,we should get 10 wins.LOOKOUT PLAYOFFS here we come.

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

4 of the last 6 might be nailbiters, hopefully we finish strong and break the streak.

  15. BroncoAussie says:

Yeah the last 6 games are really a coin toss, 50-50 chance, they hopefully will be some good games.

  16. Cali_BroncosFan says:

Im so upset that the Broncos and 49ers game is going to be in London. I was hoping to see my Broncos 3 times this year :(

  17. UNSTOPPABLE1026 says:

I think that brady quinn will be a great quarterback for the broncos he has a strong arm like cutler so royal should go back to his rooking year statistics and marshall has always been a beast.

  18. BroncoAussie says:

Well maybe there are a lot of English Broncos fans that get to see their team for the first time. Lets think of it as a gift to them.

  19. BroncoAussie says:

Brady doesn’t have an arm like cutler, and royal better pick it up.

  20. b-marsh=#1 says:

I don’t know why everyone is hating on Marshall? Who cares if he is a drama queen. He is a top 5 WR and CAN’T be replaced. McD needs to get his head out of his ass and try to improve the O with quality talent around Marshall and stop trading away all of our productive weapons. We have a lot more pressing needs to worry about than a PR problem. I say we beef up our O line and get Moreno going so that it will open up the middle for our WR and we can start scoring and become a force in the WEST again.

  21. florio's_mom says:

He has a better arm than orton tho. LOL

It looks like brady can throw it 300 yards with that cut body.

  22. BroncoAussie says:

Haha we hope, I think Princess is in love with him haha,

And not hating on Marshall, but since he is a drama queen we figure McD will move him.

  23. UNSTOPPABLE1026 says:

He is ripped like crazy for a qb I didnt mean as strong as cutler but he can definitly hit the long ball to royal or marshall or any of our recievers, and definitly has a stronger arm than orton and a way better line here in denver, also a coach who is supposedly a qb guru.

  24. BroncoAussie says:

We are all hoping he does well.

  25. 07elway says:

Very funny Aussie – Not so sure I’m “in love” with Quinn but he’s HOT. You all drool over the cheerleaders… now its my time to go gaga over the players, especially the new QB. Brady’s gonna look soooooo good in Bronco Orange and Blue!! haha Can hardly wait!!!

With good practice with the team, I think Quinn will be an awesome QB for us, starter or backup. This should be interesting to see how Orton & Quinn play out this competition for the starting job. Orton says he isn’t worried about that he’ll remain the starter but nothing is ever guaranteed, especially in the NFL.

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  26. florio's_mom says:

Cheerleaders??? I pay good money to watch football games. Not cheerleaders.

  27. sndvl says:

Getting a little ahead of ourself Aussie? Do we even know the schedule? Sure we know our home/away games and the Halloween away game, but thats all Ive heard. Its a little premature to start ticking off wins and losses, when we dont even know who will be on our roster come kickoff weekend. We still have players who have not signed their tenders, the draft and college FA. Then OTA’s and training camp. Then preseason.
And easy wins? Wasnt that supposed to be true at Washington? Or the home games against Pittsburgh, San Diego and —Im gonna puke, Oakland and KC?
Yeah there is no telling what kind of “weapons” we will even have. And we didnt finish the season that well. To be honest, the St.Louis game will be closer than most people think. What if Seattle lands Marshall after all? He wont be pumped up for that game. And lets not forget, we face Chris Johnson this season. We dont even know if our run D has been fixed…
Im not trying to be Debbie Downer, but c’mon, predicting wins? Already? I guess to each their own. But I will make my prediction in late August….

  28. BroncoAussie says:

I am just going off what happened last year and what I think, it is probably wrong but it is fun to predict.

  29. akeem0707 says:

I do think we wil win all those games because teams would beat us with their run game(which is revampt)The open up with their passing but now with our new FA our D-line is(going on a limb)Dominate and also we do have the best corner best saftie and lots of experience in our DB’s now we are even getting a better offence brady quinn is great pretty strong arm but orton is our starter because of what he did last year 2 pics is awsome but his long ball is nowhere to be found and quinn has is and in the draft i want dez bryant or cj spiller

  30. FTR says:

Maybe our Long Snapper can be a short snapper? All I know is we need a snapper. LOL

  31. mcdanielsdomain09 says:

if brady quinn gets the starting job, ill buy direct tv nd the nfl package by the end of august. love quinn i was fascinated with him in collge watched every game. not to mention i live in ohio so i saw all cleveland games. love his potential . and if we draft mcclain thats a whole other story. wheewwww love where ur goin mcdaniels now just resign marsh and lets make this playoff run

  32. jjluvsdabroncos says:

I’m totally stoked bout what the Broncos have done in the off season so far! I truly hope that Marshall and McD can work out their differences cuz it would be great to see Brandon in a Broncos uniform 2010 season. He is a solid top 5 WO. Would be sad to see him go but understand the business! If Marshall leaves then we will hopefully take Dez Bryant at #11. He can be as good as Marshall but…….Anyhoo…Quinn has great potential to be a top QB but needs guidance and McD is good at that…plus he is coming from Cleveland! That says a lot…LOLOLOL
Luv Da Boyz!!! Broncos 4 Life!!!

  33. rebelbronco says:

I know a some of you don’t like McD, and that is understandable considering how we started and ended last season. To start out so promising and fade away at the end was hard for us all, especially the head coach. His play calling was a little suspect towards the end as well. But, his FA moves last year and this year have been great! He is moving this organization in the right direction, and will become a great HC for many years to come IMO. All the pieces are begining to fall in place and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. A few more moves for debth at the O-line, some more debth on D-Line and O-Line in the draft, re-sign B-Marsh and Doom, and boy you better watch out. If that happens this guy is going to take us far in 2010. I see a really good solid team being formed, and I couldn’t be more excited about this coming season. Hope all of you are as well. Lets kick some a$$ in 2010 and make the playoffs!

    Go Broncos!!!!

  34. broncofanlvnm says:

I agree with you rebelbronco McD has done a great job in FA for the most part. I just he gets us a good power back in the draft now and more depth at the line on both sides, and also takes care of the need for a center. Pouncey, Olsen or Cook would be good here. Again, who knows what will be done in the draft again. Still unbelievable to me that they passed on Orakapo for Moreno last year.

  35. xlilmixedup33x says:

i know everyone is all excited about brady quinn, but honestly i was upset when i found out about this trade lol. i know quinn did a lot in notre dame, and now hes in an offense that should fit him real well under mcD, but im just real worried that hes so unproven in the nfl level, i know he did big things in notre dame but so did a lot of other college qb’s who became busts in the pros.

the biggest thing i was upset about this trade was peyton hillis, he is probably the most underrated football player and a hidden gem in the making. remember when shanny said that hillis had the best hands on the team??? thats including over royal and marshall and shef. that is crazy. plus hes a freaking beast, we all saw what he did two years ago. i just hate how mcd doesnt use him right. but now hillis has a better chance at doing big things. i wont be surprised if he becomes a regular pro bowler. i was so high on hillis man……. lol

i am loving our defensive pick ups tho. just a lil worried about quinn, but im sure he’ll turn out alright under mcD….. good luck hillis, i hope u become a beast so that i can get more mad about this trade lol

  36. Danso says:

I agree with rebelbronco. We are moving in the right direction. Building a team is like putting together a puzzel. Not every piece that you pick up up fits but you keep trying until you get it right. I have read every message written on this blog for weeks and if I hear we need a center one more time I think I will puke. You don’t think McD knows we need a center? When he started this process he needed lot’s of pieces and they are being put together and I will guarentee he will pick up or draft the missing pieces on the offensive line to complete the puzzel. Do you think when he cut our center he didn’t know that position would have to be replaced. Give him time he is working on the pieces. I am excited about the coming season. Go Broncos!

  37. rayjr26 says:

i dont know bout you guys but i think we really need to address the Center position! lol jk danso… had to do it! :)

  38. rayjr26 says:

i agree tho, i think McD is doing a good job of addressing our big needs thus far! as stated many times we still need to fill a few key positions on the O line, but i think already we have a better and more rounded team than last year. i wana know what you guys think about McD’s chances of being here next year. i personally think he gets another season no matter what (3 yrs seems fair to me) but if we are not at least going deep into the playoffs at that point then he will be gone! let me know your thoughts
“THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES”

  39. oldsouthstander says:

Why do you people keep having a hissy fit over the fact that we haven’t signed Doom or B Marsh to long term contracts? BOTH, I repeat, BOTH are 4th year players. For the next TWO, I repeat, TWO years they are RFA’s and what “offer” was made to them this year can be done next year also. There are only two ways that either Doom or B Marsh are not with the Broncos for the next TWO years:
    1) A trade
    2) Broncos choose, I repeat, CHOOSE not to match an offer made by another team. If the Broncos choose not to mattch any offer they’ll get 1st and 3rd for Doom, 1st for B Marsh.
You’re getting your blood pressure up over absolutely nothing. The way that they are handling it makes absolute sense from a salary cap viewpoint. It leaves more money to sign the FA’s they really want.

  40. Broncosfolife88 says:

Nice to see some different people on here, instead of the same old droning on we always get, no offense to any one I just enjoy the different views. So I see some mixed feelings about Quinn. Here is my thoughts.
1st he was barely in My City 30 seconds and was hitting up the weights. that shows he is dedicated.
2nd he is the product of one of McDaniels Mentors, has any one noticed the fall of that mentor since he entered the draft?
3rd he finally has some talent around him. What did he have in Cleveland? Cribbs a glorified returner thats pretty much it.
Now saying that I still believe Orton is the better QB right now, he has experience in this system and will continue to grow as a player. Sure Quinn will eventually (most likely that is) take over but I have complete faith in Orton and think he remains the starter for at least the next two years.

  41. Caribbean Boi says:

Kinda excited about this season…been looking at all your comments and can understand both sides. The quinn trade is interesting and I can definitely see a year or 2 down the road having it pan out. I do wish that hillis was used more, don’t know why he wasn’t. At first, I was thinking to myself, are you kidding me, hillis and 2 draft picks even though they are later rounders but when I actually we didn’t really give up that much even though Hillis looked to have the potential to be a beast. Last but not least, I like the defensive pick ups but hopefully we find some young guys in the draft. OH Yea, NO DEZ BRYANT, if you want a receiver just get Golden Tate. Peace.

  42. Ikiratuki says:

I see us drafting either McClain, Williams, or Haden in round 1. I hope we draft one of those guys anyway. I doubt Dez Bryant is even being considered by McD. Maybe a OL at round 2 or WR if Marsh is traded. LB in the third if McClain isn’t taken or TE if scheffler is traded.

  43. killerkod says:

Players play differently in different systems. Some thrive, some crash and burn. I am going to reserve judgement on Quinn until camp and I see some preseason action. He’s definitely got the athletic ability, and maybe with better coaching, system, playcalling and weapons around him, he just might be the answer we’ve been looking for.

Or, he might be a true bust and not amount to anything.

Either way, I think it’s unfair to cast such a defined judgement this early, when he hasn’t even put on a Bronco’s jersey yet.

I do know it will definitely be an interesting and exciting QB competition come August, and may the best QB win the starting job.

  44. Caribbean Boi says:

Honestly, I’m all for coach McDaniels but if Marshal goes, that would be one of the dumbest moves ever and furthermore if Dumervil ends up leaving.

  45. broncofanlvnm says:

I wonder if McD realizes we need a center? LOL!

  46. Caribbean Boi says:

You would hope he does, he is the head coach

  47. bronco4life28 says:

Well…. How to start.. first of all Quinn is going to be great and going to make our team better. Im not surprised if we let go of orton next year. He is a good passer but no capability of getting out of the pocket. And we are hurting at the o-line. Lets get some o-line help we need a C and a guard and I believe we should go for adaomikah SUH!! He will complete our defensive line. Could you imagine SUH, Williams and Doom!!! Dj and Akers will thrive. Nevermind the offense if we had them..Then keep marshall we just wanted him to see for himself that people are not willing to pay him. Then next year when he dont get any good deals he will not be disgruntled anymore and start to really settle down and become better than ever..
