Now that all the National Football League teams are into full blown free agency for 2010, I would like to point out a small factor that really is not so small for the Denver Broncos.
Every part of every season happens each year, from the games themselves to the off-season creation of the team. We all know that during the season, with the exception of the bye week, each team has a week to prepare for its game, and the game comes on Sunday (or Monday) whether you are ready or not. So sometimes, due to injuries or other unforeseen events, like the weather, a team can only get so ready. But it has to play on Sunday no matter how ready it is, so the value of and proper use of preparation time is vital.
So too is the off season player acquisition phase of the business.
Both Head Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders are very meticulous and organized men with a great passion for what they do.
Most fans do not get a chance to meet them personally, but I have been in this game a long time and I have seen some real characters. I have also seen top flight individuals and Josh and Brian are in that category, absolutely.
But there are only 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week.
Last year when they took over their roles the clock was already running.
Remember, Josh had to do every single detail that goes into being a head coach. He had to hire a staff, establish his own policies and procedures, evaluate the entire team which he had just taken over, and begin the process of looking at other players, both collegians and pro free agents, as well.
And even though Brian had already been on staff, he too had to make myriad adjustments, working with Josh on meeting after meeting as they began to determine what kind of player fit what they were trying to build.
But meanwhile, the clocked on, and it greatly favored teams that had been in pace for a long time regarding personnel decisions.
This year, with every member of the personnel evaluation team (way beyond the GM and head coach) having been in place for a year now, this makes a huge difference in your preparation for scouting and free agency. The time really does matter, and a lot.
It is somewhat like operating a restaurant and doing some remodeling. We have all entered a business that featured the little signs that say “Pardon our dust, we’re remodeling.” Of course, no problem. But it is difficult to be 100% into remodeling and still take care of all your present customers who just want their food. They really don’t care that you are remodeling.
The NFL schedule is like that as well.
It does not care if you are remodeling. Somebody is always remodeling. The challenge for any team is to play while you build. When looked at that way, last year’s 8-8 should be viewed in a very positive light, I believe.
Certainly, we all want more, always. Owner, coach, team, fans, press, we perpetually want more. But last year’s record, and the roster that made the won-lost record, was done during the most extensive remodeling process that the Broncos have undergone in a decade and a half.
This year, everything is in place right now.
I do not know who we have targeted or who we will sign, but I know the key players in the unfolding story of free agency have had a year to get ready, as opposed to six weeks.
There is an old saying that you cannot waste time without damaging eternity.
Time matters, and in this case the preparation time which the Broncos have had could yield big benefits in 2010 free agency.

Big D 44, that’s about the only advantage of being 56, you’ve done a lot of stuff, LOL.
Don’t you get like senior citizen discouts too? LOL!!
Good music in Washington State, specially in late 80′s and 90′s I think, Seattle was kind of like the rock music center in the US back then with groups like Nirvana, right? Anyhow if you are up there, do you like the Seahawks?
AARP buddy, LOL.
Ok, I’m sure someone probably already asked this but if Seattle would choose to surrender their first round pick to us, would they have to give us #6 or #14, or do we get to choose?
If they give Marshall a contract offer, it has to be the #6.
#6.. they give us their original pick
But there are ways around it, like teams have accepted lesss than the required tender draft pick in the past and closed the deal. Also a trade could be made outside of the realm of the tender, and they could do whatever.
That’s mainly why this will take a loooong time, Seattle doesn’t want to give up the #6 because they reportedly want to pick Claussen with it… but McD came out yesterday and said he would accept nothing less than the #6, negotiation stuff, making stands, bluffing, a good old poker game.
Eventually, someone will flinch is my guess.
Patience is a virtue, if I was McD that would be my MO right now.
Nice Music commentary.
On to what other positions the Broncos should be looking at. After a little research, I like Chris Chester from Baltimore. He can play guard and center. Rex Hadnot would be great as well. I wonder how much of a waiting game goes on. Kinda like walking away from the car dealer. I hope Arrington is 100% healthy, he and Jones should make a contribution to special teams at the least.
I personally think seattle is being selfish, tryign to have their cake and eat it too
trying to get pro bowl WR and a “franchise” Qb in the same year…very smart of them tho. makes sense….Their new QB could use a big pro bowl target. and grow together or w/e. If bmarsh can help make cutler and orton look good…im sure he can help a rookie..
Would Seattle have the money to both dish out a big contract to Marshall, and a big contract to Claussen?
I think this situation is scaring other teams off. It shows everybody we are not messing around. We are proving we want the 6th pick and nothing else. If we can’t get a deal through I don’t know who else will pursue him.
I really hope that everyone else is scared off, then. We need Marshall.
That’s what I’m saying, if we don’t get that 6th pick. I don’t think he is going anywhere.
brian, that’s a big yes, their owner is reportedly loaded and ready to spend it now since Pete Caroll is just coming into town and they have not met expectations for years, this is turn around time for them.
Paul Allen is the owner.
Even so it would be good if other teams want to jump in, I don’t see why they would because Seattle really wants Marshall real bad, Bates and Fish are just not going to let him slip away is my opinion and I think other teams feel that way too, they feel they would be wasting their time. Now, if things deteriorate I expect teams to come forward, but not now.
The only team that expressed interest was Cincy and they only have the 21st. The 21st pick is not enough. I think this whole situation of him not signing away is really building him up. Making him better than he really is.
The same way everyone made a huge deal about how good of a coach Shanny is a year after we fired him.
He is getting hyped up and I think it will help him and us in the long run.
Here is some news:
Jarvis Green en route to a free-agent visit with the Denver Broncos, according to agent Albert Elias.
Next twit:
For Jarvis Green, it was between New England and Denver. That he’s here now bodes well for Broncos.
I heard that Jamal Williams is in Denver for a physical. Any truth to this?
Jarvis Green, 31, 6’3″, 285 Patriots DE with pretty good resume, I am liking that….
Who is Jarvis Green again?
I guess Baylin beat me to it.
Haven’t heard anything about that, but heard Bryant is on his way to see the Bengals, so that would scratch the Marshall possibility there, however remote that was anyway.
I just saw an article that said Jamal Williams is in Denver for a physical. The article also said Williams is scheduled to meet with the Saints but Denver may not let him go?
That’s interesting…
i think williams will sign with us since he is familiar with nunnley
Hey everyone, check this out. Especially you baylinorcrush. I know your a boating man and like music. LOL! Hilarious!

lol funny vid. ima start calling my…. a johnson lol
wow, Green and Williams??yay,,two of the 3 players i was hoping to sign w/ the Broncos..the other was Marcus Spears, but Bannan may have filled in the slot for 3-4 end..
poor Javon Walker or is it, lucky javon walker? lol
he got dropped by the raiders..
hey all has anyone heard of what ever happened to jack williams would like to see denver resign him
Greg Ellis to the Broncos? Yes, No, Maybe?
The Saints also have a visit schedualed for DE Lenoerd Little and if they sign him they cant sign anybody else until they lose another free agent
Ya know that Ronald Fields can also play end? I wonder if he might take a starting end spot, then there’s also McBean who i think will improve a lot this offseason
I think Greg Ellis played LB in 3-4, is it?
I’d still like to see Ayers get more of a starting OLB role opp. DOom
Unfortunately Jack Williams is still a lion…I was a fan of what i thought he could be. He was young, fast and did well as a Nickleback…after we traded him to the lions he had a season ending injury but it seems he is still with them…
well,,,any help is needed….
Jarvis Green works for me. LSU alum.
Career numbers:
233 Tackles, 153 Solo, 80 Assist, 28 Sacks, 9 FF, 4 Pass Deflections.
He has played in 121 games over 8 seasons.
Good durability.
I dont see us making any moves…we dont wanna spend money and to tell you the truth, i am done racking my brain about who is a McDaniels kinda guy…he might like Jarvis Green though…since he is a former Patriot and what not.
Speaking of Jack Williams…I would like us to draft another CB this year, mid round maybe late round depending on our status…I like Brandon Ghee and Chris Cook…both 6feet plus with impressive speed…not pint sized..and Cook does well against the run…..I just want Ty Law out.
if we get williams who will we draft in the draft? dez bryant? who who so many questions so few answers
i was going to suggest us getting ryan lilja as a guard but he only weighs 290 lbs. not quite a power-blocking scheme guard
Lvnm, thanks for the youtube clip about the Johnson, I do have a Mercruiser by the way, LOL, but funny enough, one of my step daughter did buy me a Johnson beer bottle huggie that showed a golfer using his Johnson to hit a great shot, believe it or not I am also a big golfer, not score wise, mind you, but I just love the game, that was like 5 years ago and I still have it on my boat. Glad to see many peolpe out here with a great sense of humor.
maybe McDaniels pulls one out of his hat and drafts a QB
it woud be stupid but wouldnt surprise me
Maybe McDaniels pulls a real big Johnson out of his hat and gets the best QB money can buy!!
