New Coach, Fast Times at Broncos

January 14th, 2009 - 10:35am by jim_saccomano

It has now been awhile since I have been able to contribute to our blog site, and the reasons for that are that it has been very, very busy here at the Broncos, and also that I wanted to be able to do this when there was concise information, not just speculation.

Things change.

There is an old saying that the only constant is change, and that has happened here at the Broncos, with Mike Shanahan no longer the team’s head coach and Josh McDaniels coming to the club from his highly successful stint at the New England Patriots.

He is in a whirlwind working pattern right now, interviewing and hiring his coaching staff, organization his administrative offices, and working simultaneously with our player personnel department talking about players, current and potential.

The off season has become a very busy time for all National Football League teams and this is going to be one of the busiest segments of ours.

Coach McDaniels is a dynamic individual who brings a lot of energy and positive vibration into every room he enters.

People don’t know this yet, but they will.

Broncos fans don’t know just what to expect yet, but they know what they want.

They want to win.

It’s as simple as that.

Josh McDaniels is the son of the winningest coach in the history of Canton McKinley High School and has been going to two-a-day practices literally since he was four years old.

He has been described by New England head coach Bill Belichick as a pure football person.
He knows our fans want to win, and nobody knows our fan base better than team owner Pat Bowlen, who made the hire after being tremendously impressed by McDaniels.

Right now it is an exciting time of putting together a staff, and then the team will continue to move forward into philosophy, personnel and the scheduling of necessary team logistics.

There has never been a better time to keep in touch with the Denver Broncos web site, and I know we all share the excitement of watching how the Broncos will be remodeled for 2009.

McDaniels will do great! I’m excited to see what he’s gonna do with Cutler and our offense Points Points Points!!!! I’m hoping Nolan was a good choice for our defense.
Best of Luck and a big Mile High Salute to all Bronco Fans!!!
    Bronco till I die!!!!!

  3. louisianabroncofan says:

scttyclln of course he is going to change the offense he wants to install HIS. and don’t forget his offense had the best season ever in the history of the NFL two short years ago and turned a rookie who never even started in college into one of the best QB’s of the ’08 season. you cant expect him to keep any part of an offense he doesnt know. and i dont want him to. we need a total overhaul of this team and a new offense is gonna have to come with it.

broncoryan how do you figure Bowlens so cheap? he has some $20 million he owed shanny he’s gonna have to pay but still got ridda him cuz he wasnt getting it done. sounds to me he likes winning more than money and he is doing everything right. he’s a top notch owner and we should appreciate that. Mac will get his chance to shine and nobody knows how that will go but bowlen wouldnt have hired him if he didnt impress him or show great potential for HC. and mike nolan is gonna be great. we should be pretty good next year. a playoff spot would not suprise me in the least next year.

And lets remember 07elway and others history is very important. “those who dont know history are destined to repeat it” Shanny was here for what seems to be a long time but 14 years is just a blip on the bronco time line. people were skeptical of the shanahan hire too. same situation kinda with a young offensive genious coming in. no matter how much you loved shanahan he wasnt getting it done and didnt do much for this team after elway left. i dont know how long yall would have accepted the mediocrity he brought but i’m glad that after ten years it was stopped. in the big picture this is just another notch on that long time line. the broncos are much bigger than shanahan and while the young fans may have trouble grasping that you’ll see that this organization will always be either at the top or will be making whatever changes it takes to get there and thats a wonderful thing. your passion, tho, is welcome and you wont be disappointed. you are lucky enough to be fans of the greatest organization in sports. and that’s NOT because of shanahan and you will see that over the next decade. i’m sure of it. GO BRONCOS!!!!

  5. monodono says:

Bates is Gone. I know, the press releases around here are Very slow! Bates and Jedd Fisch are gone.
Josh McDaniels HC and will call O play’s (Great Hire)
    Mike Nolan DC (Great Hire)
Mike McCoy OC from Carolina Panthers former QB Coach(Great Hire)
    Mike Priefer STC (Great Hire)
Adam Gase new recievers Coach from San Fran (undecided)
Rick Dennison O Line Coach (Keeper!)
Bobbt Turner Running Backs Coach (Keeper!)
Rich Tuten strength and conditioning (?)
The Broncos are reportedly looking at Ed Donatell as secondary’s Coach. (undecided, I was hopeing for Dom Capers to come in, I’m still hopeing He will at some capacity)

Personally I like what’s going on in Broncos Nation, eventhough I do’nt know much about Gase, and Donatell and I have some doubt’s about Tuten. Overall I like what I see and Hope it continues to get better.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

NEW COACH, FAST TIMES AT BRONCOS, BUT SLOW RESPONSE.

  7. monodono says:

ProQBbydaySuperHerobynight, sorry to pass on the bad new’s to ya lord know’s this site isn’t giving out any info but J. Bates just signed with USC as an assist. Coach. Have one for me Jay then get your fanny perpandicular and get back here, we at Broncos Nation NEED you here setting an example for the rest of The TEAM!

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  8. Cutler#6 says:

I honestly think this guy is going to be a good coach but i have no idea why he would hire a new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates is amazing. We had the 2nd Best Offense in the league you dont need to change anything on the offensive side especially the offensive coordinator. Bates and Cutler togethor is a great duo. All they need to work on is the defense, they need safteys mcree is pretty good but he wasnt healthy this year. They also need a new D-line. D.J Williams and Champ are the leaders out there on defense. They need to get another linebacker the starters can be webster, Williams and whoever they get. They should try to sign sproles from san diego the way he runs it fits in with cutlers game plan hes a guy that can run for 150 yard or 200 yards a game and that takes pressure of cutler. you saw the way they played when Hillis was running good cutler could do the roll out and it would work great.

  9. monodono says:

all I got to say is The offense was not perfect and Bates was a big part of why it was run the way it was and Coach McDaniels will be calling the play’s from now on, so there is no room for Bates.

“I’m a football Coach and I want to have an opportunity to affect the kicking game, The Defense, and The Offense … Every phase of the game. My goal isn’t just to improve the defense, it’s to improve The TEAM… it’s not one side of the ball” Coach Josh McDaniels

Sure The Broncos had the #2 Offense in the league but that’s inflated. Truth be told They scored an average of 23 points a game, had 30 turnovers, and controlled the time of possession 3 out of 16 games. NOT PERFECT, not even close.

I believe coach McDaniels and Jay Cutler will have a great relationship as well and will do even better things in the future. So climb aboard The Cutler/McDaniels eara has begun!

By the way Nate is most likely to move on in free agency, DJ is haveing sholder surgery as we speak, and Sproles can kiss my…..

If only this site would keep us informed…..

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  10. royalbroncofan1 says:

Just read that Jeremy Bates was hired as Offensive Coordinator for USC by Pete Carroll. So long Coach Bates. Thanks for all your contributions to the success of our Team including the development of Jay Cutler. Best wishes to you in Southern California.

  11. ramboskithefan says:

hell no to mike nolan …we need trying to out dress the owner…please!! we need the ravens old coach to coach the d!!

  12. 2bailey4 says:

cutler#6, I hate to break it to u, but 1st there is no way that the Chargers are going to let Sproles go. You saw what kind of year he had when LT was hurt and wasn’t the type of back we’re used to seeing him be. They let Turner go last year, they don’t have another all purpose back on their roster. And 2nd Sproles isn’t the kind of guy who can carry the load. He would definately be an asset, but I don’t see us signing him. I don’t know what’s going on with LT lately, but I’ve heard the Chargers are shopping him. That would be an excellent addition. Although I don’t see that happening either. All I know is we need an RB, DT, DE, LB, FS, and SS. Let me know what you think about that. (Everyone and Anyone)

  13. brian_schneider says:

I will say that Cutler and McDaniels will not have a good relationship but it may come around throughout the season. Cutler made it public that he wanted Bates to stay and McDaniels let Bates go. Now I know this game is a business but when you start pissing off your franchise QB he’s going to start looking in other places. I’m not saying Cutler will be looking for a way out but, when the face of the franchise makes a public statement about a coach/player or whoever, and the first thing a new coach does is get rid of that coach/player, it’s like a slap in the face.
I sure hope McDaniels knows what the hell he is doing. In my book, he’ll only be able to use the “we’re rebuilding” card once and only once. He’s pretty much going to destroy everything that Shanny worked for. I know Shanny isn’t here, blah blah. In my opinion though if McDaniels becomes successful in Denver it will be because of Shanny and his staff has done before him.

  14. monodono says:

    get over it

  15. raiderhater78 says:

Nolan is a great Coordinator and hes prolly what this team needs we need some1 whos not afraid to blitz when were down we need that pressure and im 100% behind McD on everything hes done so far. bates was just as much to blame as shanny for an 8-8 record. yea we were good on O but we did when we first went on the field or when our backs were against the wall we need to be scoring every drive. and hes the coach for that now yes hes prolly gunna come in and push NE’s O on our team but if u look at what we did last year u’ll see its not to much different from what they do. they hardly rean the ball we can live with throwin most of the time we saw that last year. hes just what we need to get the ball in cutlers hands almost every down.

  16. raiderhater78 says:

this is lepsis-fan78 by the way they banned nme for swearing in posts. i agree with every1 who says it can be a bad decision. i came from a team in IL the 06 plano reapers, if u look us up on ihsa.org we won state 2 years in a row and set records for least amount of passing yards in a game. my point is it scares me to see a coach who wont run the ball as much as shanny. i mean we had some no bodys runnin for 50+ yards on 10 carries under shanny. but seein as how our O was 70%pass last year maybe this will work out for the good. and i was lovin our 3-4 last year the few times we ran it so i hope that can be adjusted and perfected.

  17. raiderhater78 says:

2bailey4- you rite bout sproles there actually talking bout the opposite, trading LT and holdin on to the little guy. LT hasnt been the same since last year. nad i dont want him in denver either.we have great RB’s we just need them to be healthy. hillis was a beast and so was pittman when he was healthy ok throw in some speed, (aldridge,or bell) and were set

  18. DonFrom C/S says:

What hapened to Dennison, Thought he was staying , then I dont se him listed as a coach on the staff? Hes a great O lne coach and someone I think could keep the communications open between Players and coach, especialll if theres going to be trouble betweeen Josh and Jay?!

  19. raiderhater78 says:

dennison was being offered higher possitions on other teams OC for 49ers

  20. orangecrush44 says:

His brother who was a QB coach at a High School!!!!!!!!!!!Joke!!!! Anyone know if B Turner is still around?

  21. brian_schneider says:

I will not question McDaniels coaching staff selections. I think that there are some pretty good additions. But I do hope that big brother McDaniels has the balls to fire his little brother if he performs poorly. Not that he will but you know how it is a little bit harder to tell your family no. We’ll see what ’09 yields. I do think that we will struggle a little bit at first getting to learn the new system tweaks and things like that. I kind of would like to maybe see the 3-4. I don’t know if it was Slowik or Shanny or whoever but they must have seen something that led them to believe that the 3-4 wasn’t right for the players or something or maybe the scheme. But I see some teams seem to have real success in the 3-4.

  22. USC_#1Broncofan says:

I am stoked at all the moves that are going on with our team. It is a new era for the Denver Broncos and I have great trust in coach Mcdaniels. Shanny’s time needed to come to an end. It was only a matter of time and I don’t think I could have handled seeing another season like the one we just had. I was born and raised a Bronco fan and always will be one. So lets stay behind our team and coaches. Broncos 2009!!

  23. raiderhater78 says:

im not likin this whole bringin in his brother thing i mean if it works out ok but if not were payin this guy who wasnt deserving of the spot. i mean he never coached a college team let alone NFL. oh well McD has my support. and as for the 3-4 and slowik was a 4-3 schemer he never liked the 3-4 he just tried it to change things up a lil bit. nolan has mastered the 3-4. he did great things as a DC, the problem we have running the 3-4 is we have to get more power Ends and 2 solid MLB’s. i think nate will be gone and id like to see us convince ferrior or lewis to come to denver next year both free agents. then put boss on the other side of 1 of them, leave jamie where he is and DJ where he is. if boss dont work out use larsen. id also like to see champ and barrett playin Safeties with Bell Nnamdi and Bly out as CB’s. i know im hope full but this is all things id like to see lol

  24. broncomaniac4life says:

I know Jack Williams is small, but so is Leonhard (Ravens safety). I think moving Jack inside will help out. He’s got CB ball skills+tough as nails. I also know he didn’t produce much in his rookie year, but I’m betting he’ll bounce back in his soph year. Against hiring “lil bro” even as an assistant. What is Little McD’s title? how much input will he have? I’d guess not much. Get BJ Raji @ 12th pick in draft. Put Crowder(last chance)+Ebeneezer (w/help from Engleberger-lunchpail warrior) on outside of DL….it can work…rotate Marcus Thomas. Robertson didn’t work out. Put jarvis Moss (again…last chance) as an OLB over the Tight End….it could work w/Nolan’s scheme….

  25. broncomaniac4life says:

I don’t think Coach McD should suck up to Cutler. He’s the coach. Cutler is the player. It’s not like when Shanny was coach+Elway was the player. Elway took us to 3 superbowls (I know…I know…what happend) by then+was a proven vet w/great skill set. Cutler just has great skill sets. Snake (Lone Snake fan in Broncoscountry) has won more play-off games then Cutler. Coach says. Players do. end of discussion. punches n bunches.

  26. Robb says:

I see Jim Paige reported that Josh McDaniels had someone ask about a yoga instructor for players. PLEASE, YES. I’ve been talking this fact up in my locker room for years.

Through Yoga and Pilates, Broncos will improve range of motion and flexibility, as well as strength and endurance. All those groin injuries in 2008? They WILL go away. Strength is great, and everyone knows its a necessity in the NFL today. However, strong muscles that are not also flexible throughout their full ranges of motion will simply tear fascia, muscle, ligament, or tendon.

I remember the 49ers doing yoga during games on the sidelines to keep stretched out. Just ask Eddie Mac.

Anyway, please, please do this. It will make a difference that might easily produce that Super Bowl run that’s been so elusive. Better power, less injuries.

    Thanks for listening.

  27. broncomaniac4life says:

Yoga?! Yoga?! Yoga?! (spoof of Jim Mora “play-offs” joke) what are we talk’n about here? football is a colision sport not contact sport. I think more aggressive hitting in practice would better suit the team then yoga or pilates. This is football. Not tennis…I don’t think yoga would help them in a play-off run. am I right or am I right?! punches n bunches.

  28. monodono says:

Robb is correct Yoga and pilates would improve The TEAM’s overall fexbility, strength and endurance. Broncomaniac4life Football is both a collision sport and a contact sport. As far as yoga and pilates produceing a Super Bowl run that is an over statement but still, it would help The TEAM’s health.

  29. broncomaniac4life says:

yo-how many of you are happy that we dumped Bly?! I know his salary goes against the cap, right? we have to eat that money, but I’m soooo freak’n happy he’s not in orange/blue. disagree gett’n rid of Engleberger+Winborn. Great back-ups. I’m against all the cheerleader antics Winborn after making a tackle, but he was a heady LB. I think the reason was that him+Nolan didn’t get along. I think these are good moves. Let’s GUT this team. Especially on D. Start @ the top=Shanny…work your way down. I’m guess’n @ least 7 new starters on D for the ’09 season. am I right or am I right? I’m stoked. Of course there is going to be growing pains. I can live w/that. As long as the D is runn’n to the ball+uber aggressive then it’s all good. Must start Woodyard. He’s a hungry dog. Larsen has game. I’m for building the team through the draft+not spend’n big money on free agents. Look @ our history! Niko+Manuel+mcCree+Bly+Robertson, etc…all busts…Big Time!!!! Our core O has been through the draft. Clady, Royal, BMarsh, Cutler, Sheff, Harris….time to invoke that philosophy for our D…am I right or am I right???? Go Broncos!!!!! Amped for ’09. punches n bunches

  30. Davis4H.O.F says:

All I have to say is “DAMN!” Some of you people have no idea what the hell you are talking about! If you think it might be you I’m talking about then it probably is!!
As for the firing of Shanny..it sucked! Bowlen and Shan looked like a married couple who got in a fight and bopwlen yelled he wanted a divorce and then calmed down and felt stupid for doing it but couldn’t back down and change his mind!

The biggest problem with the team is the “D”! Plain and simple! Has been for the last few years! where are the guys with the Killer instinct like T Jackson and Randy Gradishar? the bone crushing hitters like Steve Atwater and yes I’ll say it John Lynch? Everytime we had a great nasty D lineman we traded him or cut him..ie Trevor Pryce Bert Barry etc. We haven’t had that nasty D player presence since Allen Aldredge got hurt! We need the return of the Orange Crush…not this Orange Smootie with soy milk we have had for a defense! We just cut Jamie winborn who was one of the guys that gave us a little bit of nasty attitude…WTF?
Dre was not such a bad idea but it isn’t fair to lay so much crap at his feet. no Line pressure even hurt the invincible Champ Baily! We always had the nastiest fastest Blitzing LB’s in the league..what happened? dick nolan may bring back some of that attitude when he can just focus on his specialty..the “D” Denver’s D was best when it took risks and took chanced ie Stunts and blitzes and with champ and whoever they think can replace Dre’ we will be fine with letting those guys sit back and wait for the pressure to make a QB screw up!

    anyway GO BRONCOS!!!!

  31. Davis4H.O.F says:

Yoga is not such a bad idea if you understand the discipline and the flexibility it requires. Will definately cut down on the stupid injuries…lol! As long as they get up off the yoga amt and knock the crap out of somebody in practice and the games (see previous post lol)!
also…Damn! would somebody besides Wes Woodyard Dumerville and C Bailey learn to Tackle? Foxy could tackle but of course we traded him!

  32. La303 says:

Are you people crazy we are about to screw up this whole franchise for the next 10 years. P.B. have you lost it? You need to hop on a plane and take this little guy with and go get our franchise an back. If you trade jay say goodbye to at least a quarter of your loyal fan base. What if we go 2-14 are we going to invite him back. This guy is only a proven winner from a coordinator position. Don’t let this super bowl champion coordinator come in and make us the laughing stock of the league.
