This week when the Broncos take on the Chiefs in Kansas City, there will be some new aspects to the venue, but the rivalry is one of the oldest for both teams.
Kansas City had one of the most remarkable building projects in American sports history 40 years ago when the city built the Harry S. Truman sports complex, stunning to look at as you drive by and featuring two separate stadiums that have become iconic among American venues.
The baseball park is a beautiful park which underwent a remodel job a few years ago, and then Arrowhead Stadium had its turn.
Already among the most visually striking stadiums in the National Football League, all the improvements at Arrowhead were done without damage to the singularly impressive architecture of the Chiefs’ home.
They added all the usual bells and whistles to enhance the fan experience and went one step further by creating the Kansas City Chiefs Museum, a tribute to the Chiefs and to the American Football League, the birth home for both the Chiefs and the Broncos.
So, “new” stadium, same raucous fans, same intense rivalry.
Thus week’s game will be the 800th regular or postseason game in Broncos franchise history.
Last week, the Chiefs recorded their 400th win in regular season play.
The Broncos have won two of their last three games at Arrowhead, including last season’s 44-13 win that represented the most points scored by Denver against the Chiefs on the road (the Chiefs began play as the Dallas Texans from 1960-62, as AFL fans will recall).
Both teams have won Super Bowls, the Chiefs becoming the second AFL team ever to do so and the Broncos winning back to back titles in 1997 and 1998, including a stirring road win at Arrowhead in 1997, one of the most memorable playoff wins in Denver history.
Three Hall of Fame quarterbacks have played in this series, John Elway for the Broncos and Len Dawson and Joe Montana for the Chiefs.
This is one of the best rivalries in Denver history, particularly with Kansas City being the closest geographical franchise to the Mile High City. Plenty of Chiefs fans make the drive—or fly—to Denver when the Chiefs come here, and Broncos fans similarly enjoy the short hop to KC for what is always an intense game.
Also, when it is December in Kansas City the Christmas lights adorn Country Club Plaza as well, giving a great holiday glow to the City of Fountains.
Some of our fans will travel there, most will watch on television, but all of us should be aware of the atmosphere surrounding this rivalry between two AFL originals.

Here’s a funny video I thought I’d share with you all…

One of the best games in BRONCOS history!! Man this was a great day!!
http://www.nfl.com/videos/denver-broncos/09000d5d8138e649/NFLTA-Broncos-vs-Chargers-highlights
I like how we had 5 blogs come out all at the same time, looks like they are trying to separate the fan-base and the ones pointing out all the problems. I have a simple request. I say start ALL the young guys, the guys that are meant to be brought up and be the future, specifically Tebow Decker and Thomas on offense. Thompson and Cox, among others on defense. let them play so they can get experience and at the same time you can evaluate their progress over a 5 game stretch, basically treating like a pre-season, but letting them play the whole game. This could be invaluable in determining exactly who and what we need to draft, release, re-sign etc. yes we would probably lose out or close to it if we didn’t, but just think, treating the last 5 games in this manner plus the pre-season next year, or year after depending on lock-out, would be like two pre-seasons of experience, thereby we wouldn’t be wasted games that mattered when the regular season(next season) began. With all that extra preparation, the team would be much better, even with (God forbid) Josh McDaniels at head coach. Think about it and say what you think. Since we’re not playing for anything this year for real, it would seem logical.
That video is super funny!!! wow…lol
hahahaha, great vid. START TEBOW!!!
zombiefied, I agree with the raising Orton’s stock thing, but with 3300 yards passing and 20 tds to 6ints, his stock is pretty solid, especially coupled with last years numbers. His trade stock really won’t increase that much, possible teams are Carolina and Arizona, neither have QB’s and Jimmy Clausen epic failed with his chances, he looks like a bust, there are probably other teams, the Vikings, Redskins, Lions (Stafford can’t stay healthy). There are teams that need a QB, and again his stock won’t increase much getting empty stats over meaningless games, numbers that one should also note are inflated because all the play calls seem to be pass. Play Tebow to evaluate him, cuz Orton’s pretty much topped out. just my opinion.

We got 2 first round draft picks(Tebow-Thomas) as benchwarmers,on a team that could use a spark,Hell giv’em a shot….Decker could use a shot too!
Samurai it’s not like I’m supporting this stock thing. I’m with you, if the draft has already been controversial it’s time for McD that at least he picked those guys based on something. Let’s see what they have and justify all that stvpid moves
Play the rookies.
If we are “really” ready to play the next series of road games we should wear the Throw Back Jersey’s, Brown helmets with the numbers on the side. We have always won with those ugly jersey’s. In the video above we brought the THUNDER on the road!
That video was freaking awesome…if only the teddy bear verison of McD coulda been wearing a hoodie then i woulda been perfect lol
Blaze
When it works its golden….but guess what….I dont think it works because it rarely works. It works like 10 percent of the time which then leads me to believe it didnt actually work, we just got lucky, things fell our way, errors on their part maybe, or maybe we just outplayed em early and stole momentum. Defense is bad but its not that bad. Our DC sucks. But our offense always putting an average Defense out there like 90% of the game cuz they can’t do anything is why the defense looks worse than they are. Orton stinks. McDs offense stinks. And yes a QB with the IT factor could change alot. Also could a proper oline coach and maybe going back to zone blocking. Cuz power blocking CAN work. Just not the way McD does it. We need a running game so much its not even funny.
I honestly don’t think KC is going to let our Broncos come into Arrowhead and get blown out like last game…..and remember, even though they lost, their O still scored 29 points.
I don’t see KC’s D giving up another 49 points this time out, as they are team looking to avenge a bad defeat in Mile High.
I think it’s time to start the young players and get them some experience playing more minutes. And I think it’s time to get Tebow out there and see what he’s got. If he’s gonna be the guy, then it’s time to let him play.
My prediction is:
Broncos: 13
Chiefs: 41
It’s an ugly prediction, but I have lost all hope for this team for the remainder of the season and as much as I hate predicting against them, they have given me no such reason to do otherwise.
I say 38-28 Chiefs, they will be ready for us, not sure we will be ready for them.
“Sometimes I think adjustments — one way or another — can get, I don’t want to say overvalued, but the game might not encounter a lot of adjustments, in terms of huge swings in their game plan or our game plan,” McDaniels said.
Well, this week he says adjustments are not what they are made out to be, yet the previous week he kept saying SD made great adjustments and we couldn’t adjust back!!!
EXACTLY WHICH IS IT COACH?
DO YOU REALLY THINK WE ARE THAT STUPID?
Running around in circles is what it is…. Actually he is answering this way this week because everyone is asking him why we are so bad at adjusting during games, but he is so vain he will always attempt to find a way to deflect his inabilities to coach and just deflect it onto other things, never fully his fault.
What kind of example does that set for the players and assistant coaches coming from the HC? It’s never anybody’s fault, look to your left, look to your right, that’s where the problem probably comes from, but definitely not me…. How absurd a way to set an example, vain, arrogant, in denial, goody two shoes, none of these traits lend to be a successful HC, AT ANY LEVEL!
I am definitely getting insulted by how stupid McD thinks the media and the fan base are, trust me coach, we do get it, it’s not rocket science like you think and if it were you are obviously not qualified to fly this rocket. Please get off the ship, we need a real captain here.
bay,
Did you read this?
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Josh-McDaniels-ruining-Denver-Broncos-112910
It is RIGHT ON THE MONEY!
Broncos 30-21, because I love em, and optimists in me.
Yeah, that was posted yesterday, so many articles, so many opinions and 95% of them pointing to the same thing: McD is no HC material at this point and Bowlen must let him go and Xanders too, there are only so many ways to say it but I am glad many writers are working at it too, it must be now our mission to complain enough until something is done about this horrible low point in the history of our franchise we have been dragged to by McD, not just the 5-16 ongoing record, but the total lack of ethics, total lack of talking responsibility and total ineptness at the HC job. I can deal with losses but I can’t deal with that many character flaws in our HC, period. Maybe he is really a good man, but he has made it impossible to see here. He made his bed, now he must sleep in it and that bed needs to be relocated back East or anywhere but in Colorado, sad to say but I got nothing good anymore to say about that man, I read through him like a book and I don’t like the story at all. A very dejected 56 yr old fan here, that’s for sure.
I wanna say here that I totally respect people like Mr. Saccomano who just wrote this blog for holding their heads up high in the midst of this McD soap opera onslaught. Imagine what it would be like working inside a class organization like this one for over 30 years and seeing it hit the lows that it is now at. And folks like Mr. S are built themselves on high principles, respect of the history of our team, it’s values, none of which is any part of McD.
Even worse for Mr. Bowlen, how difficult it must be, because there is no way he can rationalize what’s going on and say we are on the right path, sailing the correct course, at least not deep in his heart, on the surface yes, he somehow is holding out for a miracle to avert facing having made awful choices when hiring McD, then letting go of the Goodmans so McD could have more power and give him Xanders instead. An absolute disastreous collection of choices has we now know and eventually the doing the right thing will hopefully prevail over the money constraints at the HC position and Mr. B will come around and step in to put an end to this dark time in our franchise history.
This is no joke folks even though we are the joke of the NFL everywhere now. This is our pride we are losing, we must stand up to this masquerade and fire the imposters.
…impostors,
I have a question that’s open for anyone to answer. If we get rid of McDani and Xanders… How much does that set us back money wise? I ask that bc aren’t we still paying Shanny?
Is anyone looking at the money aspect when it comes to booting the current GM and Coach. As well as getting a new GM and Coach. Someone might have answered this question in a previous post so forgive the question being asked again.
Didn’t you just read my last post? “An absolute disastreous collection of choices has we now know and eventually the doing the right thing will hopefully prevail over the money constraints at the HC position and Mr. B will come around and step in to put an end to this dark time in our franchise history.”
Yeah, of course it’s all about money and yes that subject has been discussed many times over, but I’ll do it once more just for you, haha:
We owe Shanny 3.5 mil this year and 3.5 mil next year.
McD is on a 4 year 12 mil contract so we would be left with that too.
That is why some of us anti McD guys have said we are willing to pay $100 each to the cause of firing McD as to absorb the HC losses if Bowlen can’t, how about that for sticking together…
Thanks for posting it again. What about Xanders, how much is he getting?
Xanders was assistant manager under Shanahan and was promoted to GM under McD but I can’t find anything about his salary anywhere.
But bottom line in this league you have to have deep pockets to succeed and you can’t let stuff like that stop you from making the right decisions.
From what I can gather GM salaries in the NFL can vary from $650 thousand to a couple mil a year, no idea how long a contract Xanders is on though. However I would imagine there is greater flexibility with GM contracts than HC.
I know this argument has been made many times, but I feel like Bowlen owes it to the fans to fork out the necessary money to get the right coach in here. After all, taxpayers did their part to get the new stadium built, which happened because Bowlen promised many more years of championship football should it get built. And what’s happened since then? A handful of playoff seasons, a bunch of mediocre seasons, and this atrocious season.
I respect Mr. B for what he’s been able to do since buying this franchise. I know he’s in a tough spot with this decision, and I certainly don’t envy that. That said, I feel like him getting the right people in here is long overdue. The fans did their part, they deserve to be compensated.
The current problem we have at HC/GM is way greater than money, but if one was to look at it purely in a money sense, if you stick with what we got now you might stand to save money short term but long term the losses could be much greater. Bowlen is probably mulling that over, keep having no shows for the rest of the season and force his hand, watch the games on TV like I do.
That’s sort of how I’ve been looking at the empty seats situation the last few weeks. I know people will automatically say those are the bad fans, but I disagree. It’s a quiet, peaceful way of protesting. Their absence sends a message that we need a change. And if that change actually happens and things get turned around, then those are actually pretty good fans if you think about it.
Obviously no one is listening to the fans as is now, there aren’t any other options as much as I hate saying this on this site. And for the fans who do go to the games, make sure you have your “fire McD” signs up and make some “fire Xanders” signs as well.
Just to bring up something positive for a change: I was just doing some research and Brandon Lloyd’s numbers are out of this world. Not only is he leading the NFL in receiving yards, but he is tied for the league lead with Roddy White for first down receptions with 54. The crazy thing is he’s caught 58 total passes, while Roddy White has caught 84 total passes.
So even though White leads the NFL in receptions, Lloyd has been much more efficient.
So here it is again:
54 of 84 receptions have gone for first downs for Roddy White. (64.3%)
54 of 58 receptions have gone for first downs for Brandon Lloyd. (93.1%)!
That’s just crazy. Thought I would cheer you all up with something positive about this season.
if there is a lockout next year, what happens to the teams? does it completely get disbanded and then the organization has to rebuild? also what about the draft?
I know it is just fantasy football but I was just checking out my leagues standings and the Broncos D is bringing up a cool crisp zero total points on the year, ha. The nearest to them is Jacksonville with 17. That is so pathetic.
To buy out McD’s contract will take 60,000 donations of $100 each-that will be quite an undertaking Bay.
Idk OC56, I sure hope not. For as bad as we look this year I have tons of confidence in our young guys and I would like to see how Tebow does in Denver, but it would be fun to see a fantasy draft of sorts, all the players being thrown into a pool and each team gets to pick.
I’m pretty sure a lockout is basically the same thing as a strike. The rosters stay the same but the players don’t play until the new CBA gets done. At least that’s how I understand it.
A fantasy draft would be kind of cool, but unfortunately I think that only happens on video games.
Danso, not that big of an undertaking if you ask me, all that would be is 60,000 folks passing up on buying tickets for one single game and put that money in a “fire McD” fund and you are already there, the power of the people is always underestimated.
But of course that would come out of Bowlen’s pocket, LOL. But it’s all about trying to make a point anyway. If I now go out and take a poll among Bronco fans, for each one fan supporting the current regime, I will probably find you nine who will say it’s time to start over, at one point or another the organization will have to be paying attention to the fans.
Last time I was at Arrowhead was 2008, I’ll be there this weekend, and hope the outcome is akin to what We did to ‘em last season in December, then McDaniels will not only be the only Broncos coach to lead the team to a win at Arrowhead in December, but will have done it twice!
Thanks for the read on the Chiefs ‘new’ digs! I’d be ecstatic if We broke the record We just made last season, and then some…. And shut ‘em out. Like 52 – 0. And Orton throws for 600+ yards…. We intercept Cassel like, at least 4 times. One for a score. And Eddie returns a punt and a kick for TD’s. Okay, that oughtta be sufficient. =D
A win’ll definitely do though. Thanks again!
Bay you are right except the stadium is sold out to season ticket holders. The wait is 7-10 years according to their web page. The way we are playing the wait will probably drop down rapidly though.
Like I just said, just trying to make a point, nothing to be taken litterally.
I heard this morning on sirius nfl. That an ideal job for gruden would be in denver or s.f. coming from rich gannon who is still close to the coach. College might not be for him. So we need to fire mcd fast and start looking to get gruden. If not regardless still need to get someone else.
Bay, you are a true man of wisdom, and yeah a peaceful protest, aka not attending the games, is better than having fans rioting outside the stadium. The only thing Josh McDaniels had to do this year was show improvement over his first year, even when we were 6-0 my Uncle and I both said it wouldn’t last and that Josh McDaniels is crazy. Those two facts have shown to be true. And the improvement over last year, yes we were lucky last year on a few plays, but overall, we were actually better too. So he’s shown no improvement over last year, he’s still crazy (immature, etc.), and to top it all off he hired a guy known for a scandal that has now brought a similar scandal here. He should be fired, you can’t defend him.
CostaRica. Wow that article pretty much hit the nail on the head!
Not much to say that hasn’t already been said so here goes BRONCOS 38 chiefs 27
Erica just put up a new blog telling us what she is thankful for, and it got me thinking, you know the only thing I’m really left with to be thankful for Broncowise this season? The fact that now things have gotten so bad that I can come on here and say it like it is without getting reamed by some bloggers about it since they are running out of ammo, that’s what I am thankful for.
Fresh out of Orange Kool Aid…
Chiefs 31
Broncos 14
I am thankful, and hopeful, that things are at a point of no return. That is, that change is inevitable for 2011. Provided there’s football in 2011, post change I will be more than enthusiastic.
McDaniels said he is not expecting safety Brian Dawkins (knee), cornerback Andre’ Goodman (thigh, hip) and rookie receiver Demaryius Thomas (ankle) to play against the Chiefs.
I’m thankful that my boy Bowlen has kept McDaniels around. I would also like to say that what is happening with the fans now is sad. I never thought I’d see something like this happen. So many people turnin on someone when the times get rough. Hey did you guys know that it takes time to build a franchise and build the team the way you want it and need it? Strange huh who woulda thought that it would take a while? Everyone knew this was gonna be a hard year but to completely attack a DENVER BRONCOS head coach and team is just bull things dont happen over nite it takes time to build a good example of that would be any thing that has ever been built.
GO BRONCOS
GO JOSH MCDANIELS
GO KYLE ORTON
TIME TO TEAR IT UP ON SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY
Prediction the broncos give the chiefs a run for their money and leave Arrowhead with everything left on the field
