The title of this blog is borne in the fact that it seems like every Monday morning we are tabulating new facts and statistics recently accomplished by Peyton Manning, all of which have never happened previously.
This is a heck of a ride, Broncos fans, and it is really just hitting the first curve.
On Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints–which happened to be the 13th consecutive Denver game televised on either Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday night, or by the number one CBS crew of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms—Peyton Manning completed 22 of 30 passes for 305 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 139.9 rating.
Just because we get used to it does not mean it is not remarkably special.
He became the first player in NFL history to hit the 300-yard, three-touchdown, 70-percent mark in four consecutive games.
Nobody else has done it even three times in a row. That word “nobody” is a really big one.
Let’s create some perspective by listing some great quarterbacks.
John Elway, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Bart Starr, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Warren Moon, Sammy Baugh, Otto Graham, Sid Luckman, Bob Waterfield (who for a time alternated with Norm Van Brocklin on the sensational Rams teams, Norm Van Brocklin (who for a time alternated with Bob Waterfield on the sensational Rams teams), Dan Fouts, Bob Griese, Terry Bradshaw, Y.A. Tittle, and Bobby Layne…..those are all quarterbacks who are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but not one of them ever did what Manning has done over the last four games.
By the way, Manning has 15 touchdowns to just one interception in the Broncos’ last 23 quarters of play, and this week Denver is third in the NFL in total offense.
Just stunning.
He has had five straight 300-yard games, tying his career high, and his passer rating in each of those five games, in order, is 83.0, 130.0, 115,4, 129.0, and 138.9.
Sunday Drew Brees of the Saints reached the 300-touchdown mark in just his 161st pro game—but Manning is the game’s all time leader, having done it in just 157 games.
The game against the Saints was Manning’s 68th 300-yard game, which is the NFL record.
The two quarterbacks with the most career passing yards per game, with a minimum of 100 games, are Brees (267.4 passing yards per game) and Manning (264.8 passing yards per game).
Denver Broncos fans are delirious with the results so far and very optimistic about the 2012 season.
The one thing we know for sure is that the Broncos will play one game per week, and I suspect a lot of those games will be followed by more “Monday Morning Manning” stats.

Although I think this is all well and good, and I love having Manning as the QB, all these stats are so made up. Manning is a first ballot hall of fame QB, end of story. He is still playing at that level and may be even better than before his injury, or maybe the team is better than what he had with the colts. Either way, He rocks and I am happy to have him on my favorite football team. Anyway, all these made up stats, though impressive, are hilarious.
This is what I am talking about…a team working together.
“I really enjoy working with the young receivers,” Manning said. “We’re learning each other and I’m still feeling my way out, but they’re buying in.”
Exhibit A: Manning’s one-yard touchdown pass to Thomas with 9:30 left in the third quarter, which gave the Broncos a 24-7 lead. The play was installed weeks ago by Manning in practice: Thomas, lined up to the left, begins what appears to be a fade route, then abruptly breaks it off and runs a quick out to the side of the end zone.
“When we first ran it in practice, it was against [future Hall of Fame cornerback] Champ Bailey,” Thomas recalled. “He said, ‘Man, that’s an unstoppable route.’ When I hear Champ Bailey say that, it gets my attention.” Unsurprisingly, Saints cornerback Johnny Patrick couldn’t stop it.
Strand (From last blog) I think if we do target a RB it will be WIlliams because Fox knows him very well. But all I know is that we are looking for a DT
I agree with that, but Williams is very expensive. As for a DT, I’m not sure. I haven’t heard anything about going after a DT at all.
I highly doubt Denver targets anyone. It takes a lot of leverage to get a guy in a trade and I think Denver is comfortable with this team for this season and will further bolster it during the draft and FA.
I have heard multiple people on NFLN and twitter say Denver is talking to other teams for a DT. So they are targeting DTs. If they make a trade or not is the question. Michael Lombardi is the one I have heard the most about it.
Denver is right where they need to be. I only mentioned an extra big RB like Blunt for insurance. Moreno is as good as gone and Ball is only average at best.
Thanks, Jim. Fantastic. I love knowing more about Manning. Keep me knowledgeable history man!!!
What a treat having such a talented player and witnessing history being made! Looking forward to the day when I am old(er) and am able to tell my grandkids about the great Peyton Manning.
Hey All,
Great win over the Saints! I was at the game and thought this was the best all-around game they have played as a “team” since the Steelers opener. I just wanted to get your thoughts on Mays’, very likely, season ending injury. Should we have any concern at that position or are we ok? Thanks all…Go Broncos!
That was a playoff quality performance. Awesome! If they can keep the momentum going and keep tweeking what they need to each week, the sky is the limit! And our defense is really shaping up as a unit that can help decide games. Keep it rolling on,Broncos and smash the Bengals!!
Yeah,Mayes is out for the season. I think we will be alright. Wesley is more than solid and Brook is gelling. Nate is coming on too and Danny T. is shaping up too ,so with Vaughn of course they are in pretty good shape. They may not need D.J. down the line after all.
