Deserving Honor for Williams

June 2nd, 2010 - 10:57am by jim_saccomano

It is most deserving that former Denver Broncos defensive end Alfred Williams has been selected for the 2010 class of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Alfred was one of those players who always played hard, always led others by his example, and truly loves his team and school.

He came to the University of Colorado from Houston, Texas, and had a great career with the Buffs. Alfred Williams is a member of that small class of players who can claim to have won a national championship (at CU, when the Buffs had that classic title game win over Notre Dame) and a Super Bowl title as well—and in Alfred’s case, it is even more unique in that he was a starter on back-to-back world championship teams, which very few players have even done.

He played at the University of Colorado from 1987-90 before being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals, where he began his pro career before returning to Colorado as a member of the Broncos.

No matter how great the player is, it is still a team game. And no matter how great the team is, the individual player still has to be good enough to make the team, earn a starting job and then keep that job while playing at the highest championship level.

So to be a college All-American defensive end, play on a national championship team, be a high draft choice in the NFL, and then start for consecutive world championship teams, you know you are talking about a first rate player.

That’s Alfred, and to top it off, he has continued to make Denver his home and shows real continuing passion for both the CU Buffs and the Denver Broncos. We are always proud of our alums, but it is truly special when the ex-player maintains his emotional ties with his teams as time goes by.

Alfred Williams has done that, and he will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at a December banquet in New York, with official enshrinement to come in the summer of 2011.

Congrats to a great Buff whom the Broncos were happy to adopt as one of our own as well.

Congrats! A great pro and solid contributor to the greatest joys of Bronco fans.

    GO BRONCOS IN 2010

    SIGN DOOM!

  2. tjnartw says:

Congrats to Alfred. A class act all the way.One of the best players to have donned a Broncos jersey since I started watching pro-ball in 1974, on and off the field.

Now lets get Doom signed to a new contract and let’s go Broncos.

Alfred was pretty good, I remember when he first became a Bronco in 1996 he had a career high 13 sacks, that was the year we were arguably the best in the NFL and we suffered probably what is known as our worse loss ever (it was to me) to Jacksonville who was a wild card team in the 1st divisional round of the playoffs at Mile High. Other than that, it’s all good memories of Williams, congrats for the honor.

And as I talked of Woody Paige at length in the previous blog, this is probably a perfect time to remind everyone that he might of had a hand in the Broncos overlooking Jacksonville that year. Here is some of what he said before that playoff game back in 1996:

“How do you get worked up to play somebody called Jacksonville with a bunch of nobodies? Jacksonville? Is that a semi-pro team or a theme park? Isn’t Jacksonville the only Florida city without a beach? Who do these upstart Jaguars think they are, anyway, coming to Mile High Stadium, where the Broncos haven’t lost this season and only once ever in the playoffs? They must think they belong here, but they will learn.”

And he ended his rant with this one:

“Can we get a legitimate NFL team in here next Sunday?”

Well we never got to play a legitimate NFL team the next Sunday, BECAUSE WE LOST. I guess it’s unload on Woody Day for me today, LOL.
But once a while he does say smart things, just have to decipher it from the stupid moronic rants is all… I hope BFE logs on today, he hates Woody and would really enjoy it.

Love it Bay! I couldn’t agree more, Woody is a total nutt-bag. I think he intentionaly doesn’t take his meds in order to be cooky and off the mark to get attention. He will pull a good one out once in a while. I do remember him predicting us to go 14-2 in 2005, and we went 13-3. He has his good moments once in a blue moon, but mostly its diareah from the mouth when it comes to Woody

    My three most hated media:

    Woody Paige
    Jamie Dukes
    Skip Bayless

  7. Big D 44 says:

Jamie Dukes is #1 on my list. Don’t like Mel Kiper either.

  8. jjluvsdabroncos says:

    Lets go BRONCOS!!!!!

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, at least Woody is a writer, Dukes is just an ex-frustrated football player (8 years with the Atlanta Falcons 86-93 version) who loves nothing but himself. How he got a job is a disgrace to the NFLN, just my opinion.

  10. jjluvsdabroncos says:

Does anyone freaking know when the Broncos Fan Fair will be???? Thanks to any responses up front! ;0)

  11. footballMANIAC says:

Hey baylin, I never managed to get back to my computer yesterday. In response to your last post on the other blog, I see your point, but I don’t think that the O-line will be a huge, glaring problem like some people are trying to say. There may be a few bumps, and it may take a couple of weeks for them to find their groove, but they’ll get back into their old form. Just clarifying that I’m not trying to say that the line will be perfect from the start. I just doubt that it will be too big a problem.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

    10-4 MANIAC.

jjluvsdabroncos, about the fan fair this year, this is what Kyle Sonneman, blog administrator, had to say about it:

Just talked to those in charge of Fan Fair and they told me that Fan Fair has changed this year and will be in August and tied into a night practice at the stadium. It will be a free event and once we confirm a date, we will add it to DenverBroncos.com.

  13. wildman347 says:

Congrats to Alfred!! I miss the glory days when games were being won.
There is nothing worse than walking out of Invesco after a loss, especially to the BITCHBURG Steelers and the Raiders. I dont know why season ticket holders allow our home field advantage to be taken away!

QUIT SELLING YOUR TICKETS. People have been on the waiting list for years and you turd cutters just sell your tickets, if you cant afford them release the rights!!!

In other news former Bronco Billy Jenkins will only server 4 years in a half way house for Killing a lady in a hit and run.

Can’t wiat for fan fair, Hell I might even bring the RV and do some tail gating! LOL… I know Im a nerd but the only reason I bought it was to Tail gate.
    Sorry for the rant.

    This is Broncos Country!!!

  14. Big D 44 says:

Thanks for backing me on Dukes Bay. I’m sure I’ll have more rants about Dukes as the upcoming season ensues. So I will save it for later. lol

  15. Big D 44 says:

It’s all good wildman. Bronc on buddy.

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:
