Cincinnati Connections

September 9th, 2009 - 9:19am by jim_saccomano

A new opening day to another National Football League season is upon us, but a familiar opponent looms for the Denver Broncos.

The Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals have a long history, going back to when both teams were members of the American Football League.

The Broncos were charter members of the AFL and as such are celebrating their 50th season of play in 2009. While Cincinnati’s AFL history does not go back quite so far, the Bengals were the second expansion team in the AFL, joining the fledgling league in 1968 (the Miami Dolphins were the AFL’s first expansion franchise).

Paul Brown was the man behind Cincinnati getting a pro team, and his return to pro football included references to his earlier time with the Cleveland Browns—the “Bengals” nickname gave the Cincinnati team the same “CB” initials as the Cleveland Browns, and whereas the Browns wore orange and brown, the colors chosen by Brown were orange and black for his new team.

Another interesting note is that new Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels is returning to his own Ohio roots to coach his first game with the Broncos. This won’t be the first Ohio sellout Josh McDaniels has ever seen, as he regularly played before capacity crowds when he was quarterbacking Canton McKinley High School. The Ohio fan base is always at fever pitch.

Cincinnati actually posted its first pro football victory against Denver on September 15, 1968 — a 24-10 win in the Ohio city. But overall the Broncos have gone on to lead the series by a 16-8 margin that includes a 5-2 record in Denver’s favor when the two teams have opened with each other.

The Bengals did not always have tiger stripes on their uniforms and helmets—they began with a very traditional uniform featuring black jerseys, white pants, and orange trim on both, and the helmet had the word “Bengals” printed on the sides. This was probably one of the least creative helmet logos in the NFL, but then the franchise took a dramatic leap to one of the most colorful, with the addition of the tiger stripes that now instantly identify the Bengals’ uniform.

It is an oddity of the series that this is the 25th game ever between the two teams, and yet it is the eighth time they will have played each other on opening day.

One sure thing is that the fan interest will be huge, with the Broncos’ enormous fan base tuned in on television to watch the debut of the 2009 edition of the Denver Broncos.

When do we find out who is playing this week? (KM, Marshall, Orton)

  2. 47rocksurworld says:

With McDaniels at the helm I would say will will know when they step on the field for the first offensive play, but I may be wrong. All kidding aside Qb probably today or tonight, everyone else I would assume sometime before they travel to Cincy

  3. rst08tierney says:

Its do or die time McDaniels. If you want to win the respect of the City of Denver and Bronco fans across the world, its time to win this one and start the season off right.

  4. reaper81 says:

ohio blows and so do the bengirls

  5. broncs55 says:

If Orton is going to be talking during the Press conference today (which he is), it is safe to assume he will start.

  6. broncofan96 says:

I hope marshall speeks to the press today.

  7. texark-fan says:

It might be best if Marshall does his talking on the feild, THEN talk to the press. it would have answered all the ? then. IMO he is back to PLAY.

the sad part 47 rock is….you are probably right. The players on the team will know but the rest of us he will just keep saying its touch and go and that he doesnt know and its a game time decision and all that BS…..I have stopped expecting anything from McD in that area….I will just stick to my own speculations lol

I dont want marshall to speak to the press….I want him to stay as far away from the press as possible. If he says one thing they dont like. The drama will begin again. Anything short of I AM COMPLETELY COMMITED TO THE BRONCOS….will send those evil geniuses we call the media into a frenzy.

Brandon Marshall will play….McD would be foolish not to play him…his skills are very apparent which is why hes still a bronco. McD needs to start off with a statement, with a win, to win the complete and total allegiance of fans and players alike. Brandon can help him do that.

I need to look at the Bengals roster closer 1st, but my initial guess is Broncos 27, Bengals 17. But I still need to research more.

  10. Dynamicdave says:

Sorry, I meant to post this at the previous article..

  11. TheRoyalBeast says:

Im with texark…Marshall needs to let his play speak for itself…let it speak to the media, other teams that want him and let it speak to McD and Xanders in his campaign for a new contract…..The less he says the better. Just go out there and do what you do best…DOminate. Entertain. Kick butt. He needs to stick to his strength which is the field instead of his weakness…which in my opinion is the media.

  12. broncofan96 says:

tru tru you guys are right but if you think about it even if he would say he is fully committed to the broncos they would still twist it to sound bad they been doing it all summer.

  13. texark-fan says:

Broncos 27, Bengals 24. Denver wins with a late int.

  14. broncofan96 says:

You know if we can get to Palmer and sack and knock him around we can rattle him and cause some INT then I say we win 27-7 if we cant rattle him I say 21-17 Broncos

  15. broncofan96 says:

so has the press confrence started

  16. texark-fan says:

    started at 10:40

  17. broncs55 says:

    Don’t know, I can’t connect

  18. mrbroncofan says:

I can not connect to the press conference either

  19. mrbroncofan says:

  20. mrbroncofan says:

must OF MISSED the press conference. did not read my own post

  21. broncofan96 says:

ok I thought it was just me missing it I guess well see it when they post it later.

  22. Dynamicdave says:

Non of us can get it. Will have to wait till it’s over, I guess.

  23. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

I can’t wait til sunday!!!! We are gonna crush those stupid Bengals and prove everyone that we are a AFC west contender. Everyone thinks that San Diego (a whale’s Vagina lol) is a sure shot to win the AFC west. We will show them otherwise.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. broncofan96 says:

even when we win the “experts” will just say they beat the bengals their not that good either.

  25. Dynamicdave says:

broncofan96, should that happen, great. Let Denver slide under the radar unnoticed for as long as they can. I love Denver being the underdog. Rather then let the bashing by the media upset me, I just smile, remember the writer and rip him at the end of the year when we do better then they said. I remember one year when Dan Marino was on HBO, he made picks at the beginning of the year. 4 games in, he was changing his tune. Mid-season he was doing it again. Altogether, he changed his mind like 6 times. Media (even ex-players) are just people who are getting paid to express an opinion. Doesn’t make them Nostradamus, just people with opinions. Take them with a grain of salt. They are morons, half the time.

  26. broncofan96 says:

Oh ya I saw that with dan a few years back him and collinsworth were the same that year lol. I like being the underdog its funny because everyone is shocked every time we win .

  27. Dynamicdave says:

broncofan96, yeah, funny how those bloopers stick woth us. Reminders that they aren’t any smarter (if anything, dumber) then the rest of us. They just happen to get paid to mess up, ha, ha.
