I still can’t get used to the term “blogging.” I don’t know its origins, but I definitely like what it is, what it represents. But it is here, and that’s why I think it is vital that the Broncos and other teams be at the forefront of embracing it.
Fans want to comment, and read as much inside comment as possible about their favorite teams. There is no better place for that information flow to begin than from within the team itself.
Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, and while the expressions of experts in various fields is never de-valued, so too must it be said that those people do not have a monopoly on opinion.
And sometimes the greatest expert of all is the one who chooses to say the least, who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes.
With that in mind as an absolute concept, it is fascinating to welcome our newest blogger to the Denver Broncos’ web site, General Manager Ted Sundquist.
Clearly, in the world of professional sports, the ultimate experts are those who actually work for teams in the highest capacities of player personnel, and a club GM ranks at the highest level of that food chain, by experience, knowledge and day-to-day activity.
It is that expertise to which outside experts attempt to tap into regularly, to enlighten themselves ands the publics which they serve.
Ted has become a member of the BBF (the Bronco Blogger Family) and we are all better off for it.
If a fan has interest in reading about the Broncos, who better to turn to than the general manager himself?
Of course, that does not mean Ted will be blogging every day, nor that each topic he addresses is the specific one that an individual reader would like to touch on every time, but so too it is with writers, columnists, and broadcasters–he who has the pen determines what he wishes to say.
We read it for enlightenment and often for entertainment (and those of us who are writing hope we do not provide too much unintentional comedy in our work).
Ted and I have had a lot of conversations over the years, philosophical in nature, about the dissemination of information. It is not possible for one writer to know everything, or everything that there is to know about a given topic, no matter how hard he might work at it–and some work very hard, spending almost every waking minute on the job, one way or another.
This gives Ted a chance to share some of those thoughts that are looking for expression.
The GM’s take is a fresh one to most of it, and involves a lot of analysis with a minimum of emotion–Ted can’t afford too much emotion in his job, as increased emotion at the expense of analysis makes for a toxic cocktail.
He knows all the dynamics of roster makeup, and for whatever part he chooses to share, whenever he does so, we are better off for it.
I for one will look forward to reading your blogs–I can’t help but learn something from them, and sticking you at the keyboard is a big plus.
A lot of sports GM’s, as well as player agents, have taken to responding to press questions via e-mail. They just find it more convenient than returning phone calls–which does not suggest how often they do, or do not, or should return press calls. I am not in position to judge the schedules and availability of each person–everyone has a busy schedule, and different priorities to squeeze into a seven day week.
This certainly did not exist as a concept or a reality when I started in this business, or even when Ted did, but it is great to see it embraced by one more general manager.
I know a lot of Broncos fans will look forward to it. Of course, a lot of Ted’s comments might have an orange and blue tint to them, but that’s not exactly a bad thing in the Broncos Country universe.

Welcome to the real Bronco World Ted… I think it’s great and courageous to come forth and identify as you going to do. Afterall, everyone in here is ONLY here because we love the Broncos. And as we are to emotionally wrapped (fanatics) about the franchise in which you are associated, we are very glad to have you come visit, field some questions, take some bows, take some heat, but know that your dialogue and time is truly appreciated, and that certain comments should be looked upon strictly an endeavor to gain greater insights that we the fans can only assume or reasonably presume to be true. You can now clarify and give us the inside so to set the record straight and potentially turn what appears to be unhappiness into a deeper understanding that we can then chew on in the blogs.
