Broncos vs. Chiefs – Another Classic Matchup

November 8th, 2010 - 12:32pm by jim_saccomano

When the festivities and hostilities kick off this Sunday at INVESCO Field at Mile High, it will be the 100th regular season matchup between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs franchises.

There is nothing like a good rivalry game to stir fans up, and ours undoubtedly will be very vocal Sunday, in spite of and maybe even because of the fact that the season has not gone well so far.

This is a matchup that at this time is led by Kansas City, 54-45-0, with the Broncos having taken the only postseason meeting, 14-10 in Kansas City on their way to the world championship in Super Bowl XXXII.

The Chiefs began life as the Dallas Texans from 1960-62, and I always loved that original Texans helmet, which had a map of the state on each side, with a single star marking the location of Dallas.

The Broncos would never have begun at all had it not been for the perseverance of Dallas owner Lamar Hunt, who started his own league when he could not get a franchise in the NFL, and who then stuck with his AFL guys when the NFL honchos made a final effort to kill off the new league by finally giving Hunt a franchise.

The eight owners of the AFL teams were dubbed “The Foolish Club.”

But it’s not how you are born, it’s how you grow, and these two franchises grew just fine. The Texans moved from Dallas to Kansas City in 1963 and altogether won 25 of the first 27 games against the Broncos.

So considering Denver only winning twice in the first 27 times out, the Broncos since then are 43-29 against this week’s opponents.

At home the Broncos are 29-6 against the Chiefs franchise from 1973 over the last 37 years, and the Broncos will be looking to put up number 30 on the home ledger this Sunday.

When AFC West teams get together you never know what you might see. Last year the winning team scored 44 points in each of the home and away games, with the visiting team on top both times.

Three Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks have been featured in this series, John Elway for the Broncos and Len Dawson and Joe Montana for the Chiefs.

Fans have seen the Chiefs outscore the Broncos by 2,345 to 2004 total regular season points, so that 341-point differential is one the Broncos are not likely to put much of a dent in this week, but that’s Okay.

Denver is just looking to outscore them by one!

Yeah, but mine was a little more on the nrgative side.LOL

  2. O&BinCostaRica says:

Can’t wait to add him to my fantasy team! I need a TE! (SARCASM)

  3. BeastFromEast92 says:

strandofts I agree on the drafting a pass rusher,I think our Corners, even Cox and Thompson would do just fine if the opposing QB didn’t have all day to pass,we need a big time pass rusher opposite Domm wether it be a DE or an OLB.IMO

  4. baylinorcrush says:

I said I won’t talk about what to do for next season until after this one is over, but I will say that a top 5 spot in the draft must be used on a big man in the trenches, on the D side in our case, I would be strongly disappointed with anything else, that’s all I’ll say for now.

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Doom,not Domm.

  6. strandoftds says:

Ha! Where`s Shannon when you need him. (sarcasm).

  7. BeastFromEast92 says:

Agree with ya Bay,any DL,as long as it’s a great player would tickle me pink.I wished we would really go back to a 4-3 permanently and draft a big time DT or DE.

  8. strandoftds says:

    sold!

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

    IDK,but Sheff is in Detroit.LOL
But we have Grankowski or however the Hell you spell his name.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

It’s Gronkowski, not Grand Kowski, LOL.

  11. strandoftds says:

Before we know it the season will be over. Stop the bleeding.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Like somebody told me the only reason we got him is because every N-E team has to have a ski name on it’s roster…

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

    ok…cause he sure as Hell ain’t grand.LMAO.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

McD still has his watch set on Eastern time I heard, LOL.

  15. strandoftds says:

Makes you wonder if McD has given up on Richard Quinn.

  16. strandoftds says:

    The middle east. lol

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

    McD CAN TELL TIME….

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

Seriously guys, this season is making my hair turn gray fast,I wished it was over already, and that is something I thought I would never say about the Denver Broncos, sorry.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

The Quinns’ fiasco, spent so much for both for so little, the story of McD’s time in Denver so far, wastes darn near everywhere you look, wasted picks, wasted trades, wasted landscape.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, like I said last week, this is the first bye week ever that I couldn’t wait to have, very sad.

  21. Big D 44 says:

Me too guys. I was happy to have a bye week for the first time ever as a Bronco fan. Guess we all know what it feels like to be a detriot and raider fan the past 5 years.

  22. strandoftds says:

BFE, I`ve already got a touch of grey. Before the season is over I may need to buy some natural color for men. Haha. I`ll blame it on our losing season. gotta blame it on something. I`m aging by the day Bronco`s.

  23. strandoftds says:

    And wasted orange sunsets.

  24. Big D 44 says:

Truely sad. A once feared franchise is the laughing stock of the NFL. A sunny day has to come to Broncos country eventually.

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

And the sun sets on this season for sure if we lose to KC….

  26. archangel77 says:

One of the problems that needs to be fixed is not in the line up but what those players will be doing. I know that every team uses a mix of wrap and trap as well as some zone but the Broncos whose balance sheet has got to be 85% to 15% respectively have to examine the fact that the power system that they are currently running is not being effectively employed. You have had the time, the players have all spent time at different and numerous positions and been able to glean the basics of what their jobs are across the offensive line. I will guarantee that this system will continue to fail though. We have O-lineman that have great feet and tend to pass block well, especially when they have the time to warm up (i.e. no three and outs during the first series of downs) but we do not have “road graders” Kuper and Harris are the closest thing we have to that prototype and even they make the most basic mistakes like getting tall in their blocks, keep narrow stances, and stop moving their feet while run blocking. The offensive line and defensive line are units where strong effective fundamentals rule the outcome of any game and our units seem to be missing the basics more than they used to. Coach McDaniel’s has got to get some of our units back to basics, to small things and do them very well. Keep plays in front of you, be a sure tackler, flow to the ball, and do your job. Those should be the rules of the day for the next few weeks. I believe that the Broncos have the personnel to make this happen. I believe they have the position coaches and coordinators to make this happen. The question now resides with the Head Coaches ability to do what the lowly San Diego Chargers have managed to do. Get a win!

    Dominate their will to win!

  27. strandoftds says:

A few months before the season started I was so looking forward to the games to start. I thought we where going to have a good year. Boy was I wrong.

  28. strandoftds says:

    No doubt BFE.

  29. Big D 44 says:

I agree BFE. I said that in an earlier post. I predict if the Broncos loose by 10 points or more to the Chiefs, they will probably give up. So lets hope they play some inspired football. There backs are against the wall. If they cannot muster the enthusiasm to go out and beat the Chiefs under the circumstances our team is in, then they do not derserve to have a good season. Come on Broncos. Have some pride.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

KC just lost a close one to the Raiders, worst thing that could of possibly happened, I just heard their coach saying how they just learned that they can’t just sit on a divisional game with a lead (they were up 10-0), because that’s what happened, you let a team hang around and you get beat. Bottom line we are slow starter and KC is going to pound it early and often and won’t let up this week.

  31. strandoftds says:

    Way to many penaltys also.

  32. strandoftds says:

But can we stop the run?

  33. tav true bronco says:

Goodman, nate jones, renaldo hill are all BUMS, i bet i can play better than them. cox and thompson will be alrite with a year under their belt they look better than last year rookies. I think most of our drafts should go to defense next year. and i hope gruden will be our coach.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

With Vickerson back there is an outside shot with the 43, like against the Jets, but then again there is KC’s ST, something to be real concerned over considering our shortcomings there. It will be a tough mountain to climb to beat KC this week, if we do it I will pull my hat off to them, no doubt.

  35. tav true bronco says:

strand, we better stop the run or it will be another raider game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. O&BinCostaRica says:

All kickoffs go out of the endzone and all punts will be towards the sideline. Specially at Mile High.

Their ST will not be a big factor.

  37. tav true bronco says:

bay, if we beat kc sunday i think we can win all 8 of our games we got left.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

It always goes back that in this league you need to be able to stop the run and run the rock to be successful, I don’t care what anybody says about this is becoming a passing league, and we don’t do either and somehow we still sit here hoping that we will get better… We are some fool hardy fans let me tell you.

  39. BeastFromEast92 says:

The only chance we got is loading the box with 8-9 if we have to,to stop the run,and make Cassel beat us throwing the ball, cause if we can’t stop the run….well anyone remember last year when we played KC??

  40. baylinorcrush says:

O&B, that’s one of the most orange colored glasses thing you ever posted, I hope our ST don’t feel anywhere as confident about it as you do is all I’ll say about that.

  41. BeastFromEast92 says:

ttb….Goody is a good CB,he has been hurt, and still is not 100%,I’ve said all along,we have the best CB tandem that we ever had with Champ and Goody, when they are healthy.

  42. 24_champbailey says:

LOL It’s funny how all you guys are depressed on our denver broncos, on the real I still have faith for them, It’s not over yet…

  43. BeastFromEast92 says:

I don’t have a problem with anybody calling Jones and Hill bums, but I like Goody, when he’s healthy he is our #2 definitely.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, 2-6 is really looking up, how could we miss that? LOL.

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Yeah man.LMAO.

  46. tav true bronco says:

Beast…When i see goody play he get beat short and long, thats why i say he a bum i think cox will be better next year and take his spot unless we draft a cb and he cme in and do better than both of them. BEAST im not trying to go against you i just call it how i see it, if he injured he need to stay off the field cuz aint no excuses once you step on the field. what yal think of harris from greenbay would he be a good pick up if he healthy?

  47. baylinorcrush says:

At 6-0 last year this team managed to miss the playoffs, but at 2-6 this year, no problem, just gotta have faith…. Is that stuff available for sale anywhere?

  48. tav true bronco says:

24 champ… the team got me depressed every sunday im surrounded by fans feom other teams i be the only bronco fan at my family house and i find myself arguing every week. its come to a point where i dnt even argue no more i just agree with them. if we win i dont gotta hear nothing but we not winning. i still have a lil faith left but man these losses we have taken isnt helping and turning me into the angry blogger.

  49. tav true bronco says:

IAM HAPPY I GO MY AUTHENTIC THOMAS JERSEY IN THE HOME COLORS. IM SO HAPPY BOUT THAT AND IT LOOK GOOD ON ME.

  50. BeastFromEast92 says:

ttb..Goody wasn’t even healthy enough to play the last game, and I do agree when you’re not healthy you shouldn’t be on the field, but tell McD that,he’s put unhealthy players on the field all year long, and it’s ok to have different opinions buddy, that’s what the blog is for.

It all starts upfront…if we could get a pass rush and make the opposing QB throw the ball sooner, our DBs would be fine, not even the best can cover a WR for more than 3-4 seconds.
