April Gets It Started

April 6th, 2010 - 11:14am by jim_saccomano

The balance of April will be an exciting time on the calendars of the NFL, the Denver Broncos and our legions of fans.

The full schedule will be released soon – and while we have not received any advance word of a schedule timetable, past history suggests we should look toward next week. The NFL officials in charge are no doubt putting the final touches on the schedule right now, but this type of announcement is never made real late in the week-you always want to create the maximum buzz among fans, so assuming it does not happen this week, next week looks perfect in that it would precede NFL draft attention.

Then, just as fans are discussing who their favorite team plays, where and when, the draft will begin its new three-day prime time run on Thursday, April 22.

The first round will take place on that Thursday night’s made for TV event, followed by round two and three on Friday, April 23 and then the remaining four rounds of the draft will wrap up on Saturday, April 24.

This will make for plenty of interesting conversation, not just because of who was selected in the first round but also with a litany of speculation regarding those players still left on the board, and the next picks not coming for 24 hours.

Then, at a lesser level but with a lot of excellent prospects still involved, the process will repeat itself again.

And then, the first rookie mini camps will be held for many teams, the Broncos included, on the following weekend, giving local media and legions of fans their first mass exposure to the new players.

The off season lifting programs are in full swing, and have been for a couple of weeks, but NFL interest will shift into high (higher) gear in the next two weeks, making it a great time for fan interest!

  2. marshisboss says:

I can’t wait for the draft it is a very exciting time of the off season i hope we get some players that make an impact from the beginning

  3. broncosbling says:

I can’t wait neither, one thing for sure i hope and that’s just beat Chargers! I can’t stand them! Go BRONCOS!!

  4. CrazyBRONCOSfaN08 says:

hopefully the chargers wont be as tough now that LT is out of the picture since he has been torchering the broncos ever since he was drafted

  5. atwaters da man says:

I hope pick up Taylor Mays. He mismatch/play-maker on the Defensive side of the ball. I know it is not our most pressing need but the teams that draft value always win in the end. He would have been a top 5 pick last April. Mcbath and Mays can learn behind Hill and Dawkins. Keep Denver’s tradition of Hard Hitting safeties… Dennis Smith, Atwater, K Kennedy, Lynch and Dawkins.

Mays is also the fastest defensive player in the Draft. A 4.24 40 is pretty impressive at 6’3 230lbs. The base DeFense has turned into some form of the Nickel package with the pass happy NFL. I believe our Defense is only as strong as our Nickel package.

We also need a fast Corner Back!
The main reason I believe we lost 8 of the last 10 was because Jack Williams got hurt. J Williams was a quick 4.3 CB and after the first San Diego Chargers game (you can look up on u tube) Coach Norve Turner said in his post press conference “They played allot more man than we expected!” Jack got hurt that game and in comes Tye Law in the Steelers game (anyone who knows anything about football, can tell you that Tye Law is not running a 4.3 at this stage of his career) who cannot cover man without help up top. (at the minimum) Also we played Andre Davis in Running situations and Wesley Woodyard in Passing situations. Football is a simple game, as it has been mentioned in almost every press conference…”Whoever tackles the best, blocks the best…will win the game.” It is a simple game but if you don’t DISGUISE what you are going to do on Offense and Defense you are dead.

Nobody has CB as a need but Alphonso is not a nickel CB he is a X or Y CB and I do believe he will have a successful future. Nate Jones will be great for zone and blitzing but we need a quick and fast Nickel CB the can play MAN without help (For 6 seconds until our pass rush can get to the QB) out of this Draft and I hope it is in one of the higher rounds!

Mays or Kyle Wilson out of the first 2 rounds would give us a solid and creative platform to attack the 3WR, 1TE and 1 RB set that is being played almost 50% of the time.

Thank goodness, I can’t take too much more of it being quiet around here. About ready to lose my mind!

And I’m on board with ya broncosbling, the one major thing I want from our Broncos this year is to bully the Chargers around and make sure they get nowhere this season. I think they’re going to have a really tough year… or maybe its just me saying that just because they get on my last nerve?? Either way, we’ll be on top in the West… this is the year I’ll be right about that. lol

I’m excited about the draft… will feel like something is actually going on this offseason. Hopefully they’ll make wise moves in the draft, Lord knows we need all the help we can get, so long as it is the right players for our team.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  7. atwaters da man says:

The other reason is Ryan Harris who does not get enough credit.

  9. rev79 says:

I just hope we don’t “give away” picks like we did last year!

  10. broncos20 says:

I see where you’re coming from Atwaters,we made more plays in man-coverage…
and plus, Champ likes playing man too and Goody was solid at it…..I like the fact that you say Phonsi will be a great X & Y corner….
Taylor Mays sounds great, but you said it, its not much a pressing need, more a luxury….dont forget, Barrett too ran the fastest DB time last year 4.37?at230lbs…
there will be some good CBs next year’s draft…

  11. brian_schneider says:

I think with having a full season with the team will help McD out. He’s seen what some players can do, what they’re capable of and he has a better idea of where and what we need to address in the draft. I think last season it was sort of chaos in the draft with maybe some questionable knee jerk reactions (Alphonso Smith). This draft I think will be much better as far as selections and being prepared. I sure hope McD, Xanders, and Bowlen are all on the same page.

  12. mrbroncofan says:

I think it is a little funny that Shanny is having to go through much of what McD went through last year

Last year Cutler left Denver and Orton came to Denver. This year Campbell will likely soon leave Washington because McNabb is now there.

Last year McD had to deal with the whole Marshall thing which still has yet to work out. This year Shanny is dealing with Haynesworth and trying to trade him away which is yet to happen.

Maybe the two coach might want to get together and compare their notes.

  13. DoomervilRocks92 says:

I can’t wait for the schedule to come out, then the draft right after that. It’s going to get real exciting real fast around here.

  14. RSH says:

Posted below is my 2010 Denver Broncos Mock Schedule. Weeks 8 and 9 are already determined. I have Denver at home in Week 1 for the first time since the 2004 season. Denver cannot play a Sunday home game in Week 1 unless it’s in primetime or against an NFC opponent as CBS broadcasts tennis’s U.S. Open at this time of the year.

I, also, per a new NFL guideline have the Broncos playing a divisional opponent in Week 17. The league hopes intra-division games will make the last week of the season more competitive. I have also included what uniforms I think the Broncos will wear each week. I hope you guys find this of some interest. We’ll see where the schedule-makers have us very soon.

    Wellcome back Ash!!

I can’t wait either for the schedule. This season will be my first time going to Denver for a Broncos game, by october, and I need to know vs. who that game will be. You know, after 32 years being a Bronco fan, and finally be there. That will be special.

    Go Broncooos!

  16. broncos20 says:

    wow!!!! NICE WORK RSH!!!

wud, no mustard yellow and brown this season??lol….

ITs this Jets game that I’m waiting for…good thing we have BYE before them

  17. baylinorcrush says:

This is a MOCK schedule RSH posted, other than the 49ers game already set, all the 15 others are up in the air, no one knows when we will play the Jets or anyone else, just the 49ers in Wembley is all. Just thought a little clarification was in order, RSH just had a lot of time on his hands and probably was getting tired of mock drafts, so he came up with a mock schedule, that’s a new one to me…

  18. RSH says:

    baylinocrush,

How was my post not clear? The post was as clear as could it be–that it was merely a mock schedule and not the actual one the NFL will release in a week or so. Also, why the disdainful tone in your post? If that was your intent, it definitely was unmerited.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

RSH, I only put in the clarification as broncos20 got real excited to see in your post that we had a bye before playing the Jets, so you can cool your jets, LOL. You’d be surprised how much you have to be clear about things here if you don’t want to be misunderstood, I was just landing you a hand…

  20. 07elway says:

ahaha, men… you all crack me up.

Hey, whitebronco#1… yeah I pop in and out of here…. nothing to say when its been so quiet. Guess you could say I’m staying away to get the bitter ending to last season off my mind… yes it still bothers me. If it doesn’t bother anyone else, it should! lol Hope you do get to go to your first home game in Denver. Awesome stadium and not like I have to say it, but there’s nothing like a home game in Denver. The atmosphere is ridiculous. If I could, I’d be at every home game, every year. That place is home to me.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  21. RSH says:

    baylinocrush,

    Point noted.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

I try to write clear things such as “Marshall must go”, LMAO…

  23. whitebronco#1 says:

Yeah Ash, I’m still pi$$ed off, too. That makes us at least 2. I hope a W for my first home game, and of course be at more home games in the future.

    Go Broncooos!

  24. BeastFromEast92 says:

Boy Orton is awful sure of himself now, talkin about steppin it up and not watching from the bench.I think he will start and play better because he knows if he don’t,Quinn is waiting in the bushes to get his shot.Orton should have a better year(especially if the Beast returns)he’s got a year of the offense under his belt,it all depends what our Oline plays like, and if he gets some RUN support,if he does I look for him to have a good year.Kliss says we will take Pouncey at #11,that would be stupid, when we could trade down 6-7 spots and still get him and maybe another 3rd or 4th pick.

  25. broncos20 says:

    like the draft board BFE92

  26. 07elway says:

I think Orton is acting like this cause he’s getting more confident in himself… take note that he never acted like this, was never sure of himself. Now he has a whole team backing him up, but I do hope he knows there’s a fine line between confident and cocky. Players always seem to fall on the other side of the line after so long because everything has started to their way and then BOOM reality hits ‘em. I like Orton, he was our best option at QB out of the 3 we had but Quinn will give him a run for his money, mark my words on it.

lol, I won’t be able to get over it till we start doing things that will 100% convince me that this team is ready to start making improvements on the field and quit ending the season at a dead end. You’d think they would be so frustrated with this and actually try to do something about it. I’m beyond frustrated and annoyed. That’s my goal too whitebronco… definitely want to make it to more home games.

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!!
