Another Start, More Records

December 27th, 2010 - 10:51am by jim_saccomano

It has been awhile since Broncos Country has this much electricity running through it based on the play and potential of one single player.

But the power plant fueling Broncos fandom is on overload today due to the play, potential, charisma and electricity of quarterback Tim Tebow (journalistically, it is appropriate to state his position before his name in a story’s first reference, but I do not think there is a fan in America who does not know Tebow is a quarterback).

I shall leave it to others to argue and debate the growth and development which his potential will reach; as I said last week, no one can predict the future.

However, what one can do, and what I choose to do here is give you a “Dragnet” version (“Just the facts, Ma’am,” as Jack Webb used to say) of his latest start and first at home.

Tim Tebow made just the second start of his pro career Sunday, and his first before the excited home denizens of Invesco Field at Mile High. Erich Schubert of the Broncos’ PR department provided the statistical analysis.

Tebow completed 16-of-29 passes for 308 yards with one touchdown and one interception, finishing with a passer rating of 89.4, and had 10 carries for 27 yards and one rushing TD, leading the Broncos to a come-from-behind win in his first home start.

As Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest of the story.

The 17-point halftime deficit ties for the largest in team history in a game the Broncos came back to win. Frank Tripucka is the only other quarterback in franchise history to bring the Broncos back from that large of a halftime deficit (he did it twice — in 1960 and ’62).

Tebow’s 308 passing yards tie for the most in a single game this season by an NFL rookie.

Tebow’s 308 passing yards rank third in team history in a single game for a rookie QB, and the most since John Elway had 345 vs. Baltimore on December 11, 1983 (ironically, that game was Elway’s first comeback win of his storied career).

Tebow’s 308 passing yards are the MOST EVER for ANY Broncos quarterback, rookie or veteran, in 51 years, in his first career home start.

Tebow’s 19.3 yards per completion against Houston marked the second highest average among all quarterbacks in the NFL in 2010 and ranks second, all-time, in Broncos history (with a minimum of 16 attempts; Jacky Lee accomplished the feat in 1965, 45 years ago).

Tebow Sunday had his third game of the season in which he has had touchdowns both rushing and passing — this despite just two games as a starter. That stat is tied for third among ALL NFL quarterbacks, and Tebow is the only one of the three to have just two starts.

Tebow led the Broncos on two 12-play touchdown drives in the fourth quarter against Houston. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Broncos had just one touchdown drive of more than 10 plays all season.

Tebow had just one three-and-out series against Houston (Denver had 54 three-and-out series this season entering the game, averaging nearly four per contest).

Tebow’s four rushing TDs this season are tied for second among all NFL quarterbacks, leading all rookies.

Tebow’s third down passer rating of 139.1 (6-of-9 for 96 yards and one TD, with no interceptions) vs. Houston was the highest third-down passer rating by a rookie quarterback this year in the entire NFL (minimum nine attempts).

And…

Tebow Sunday became the first rookie since the NFL merger and one of just three quarterbacks overall to lead a 17-point comeback in his first home start.

As Jack Webb said on Dragnet, “Just the facts, Ma’am.”

Draw your own conclusions.

Yea, I want Tebow to be the future of this team. I could handle seeing Cutler go, but if the new coach gets rid of Tebow I might just lose faith in the Broncos! Tebow is the first real leader since Elway. HE FOUND A WAY TO WIN THAT GAME!!! I hope Denver is planning on keeping Tebow his whole career! haha

    GO BRONCOS!!! GO TEBOW!!!

so do we draft Fairly or Peterson? The young players have been stepping up but i dont know if they can grow much more. I wish we could sign Champ for a few more years but i dont think that is looking to good right now.

  3. BeastFromEast92 says:

    SIGN CHAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    DRAFT FAIRLEY !!!!!!!!!!

  4. hometeam007 says:

I want to echo the accolades that Tebow is getting. Congrats on a great home performance!!

While I would love to chime in on potential draft fodder.. I am getting more anxious to find out who will comprise the new coaching and management regime. I sure hope it is someone who can utilize the remaining bit of talented players we have instead of scrapping the team again for the next few years. I wonder if Singletary would make a good DC?

  5. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I say Sign Champ and Draft DE Da’Quan Bowers (if he declares) and DT Stephen Paeas. I would like peterson but we can survive without him. And if Champ goes…Still Bowers…Lets leave it up to Champ to decide where he wants to go…I think he is a Tebow believer but He deserves a Championship and his best bet may not be us…Hate to say it but…It may be the Patriots…

I wonder what some of the nasayers are saying right now? Tebow is going to make them all eat their words before this is all said and done. He is making/breaking records every week that he walks on the field. He will continue to develop each and every week. I also wonder what would have happened if he would have hit the field five weeks earlier? Would we have lost those five games?

  7. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

Do you guys think Thompson and Cox could make good corners eventually? I like both but they seem to get beat often. I really would like to have a younger DL though. I know Jamaal Williams is getting old but he has a year or two. Would he make a good 4-3 tackle?

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

Tackle is always easier to play than NT,depends on who the new DC is,if we stay with the 3-4 or go back to a 4-3.Williams is washed up if you ask me.We need to draft a young DT,DE,and ILB.IMO.

TRB,I like Bowers too,but since Fairley plays DT,but can plat DE too,he is a great runstopper and can get pressure on the QB (10 sacks this year).
Either will be a great addition to our Dline, but at least we agree that we need a DT and DE!

Luck might not come out,Panthers might draft Bowers:

As an LSU fan but a Orange and Blue bleeding man…. We have to get a D-linemen over Petterson. I think Thompson will be more electric than Cox bc Thompson seems more humble. i think Thompson can be like Asante Samuel one day and not just with the hair.

  10. hometeam007 says:

Good questions. I thought Cox was in jail and done for the year, maybe his career. Who has the skinny on Perrish? As for Syd… he is a play maker and will get better with good coaching. I don’t think Nate Jones has performed well. Really, there are are very few good players on defense that I have seen. Players I would keep, Bannan, Vickerson, Dumervil, Champ, and we have some great second team guys like…..everyone else. DJ needs a change I think.

My number one wish for next year is a solid D Coordinator that will stay and make this a feared defense for years to come. Like Dick LeBeau. A defense that can cover over the sins of a developing QB.

  11. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

if we do swith back to 4-3 will we have Dumervile & Ayers play DE?

  12. BeastFromEast92 says:

As long as we get an elite DL,I will be happy tho!
I say no to Peterson,I know he’s great,I’ve seen him play this year, but our Dline is way over due for an overhaul, and the bandaids have done fell off,no more FA DL please, and no more waiting till later rounds for a DL!

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Doom and Ayers are more than capable of playing DE,both guys played DE in college.

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

BFE Darn straight we need DL lol. I dont care who they chose either as long as they are on the same page with us. The thing about bowers is him and Luck are considered the undisputed top two. And we have what looks to be a top 2 picks…the kid is flat out the best on the line and has about 15 sacks this year. I would welcome Fairley with open arms as well but if we can get Bowers in first round…and Stephen Paea a DT in the second round…I say goo for it…Bannan is the only star on our line…Jamaal does work too but he is old…mcbean stinks…that other DT that escapes me stinks too and vickerson is alright but old. But like I said man…Bowers is my top choice but Fairley is very good as well…Its like a question between suh (Bowers) and Failey(McCoy) … even tho I am aware they dont (but can) play the same positions….

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Agreed!

  17. nyuk nyuk says:

@Yovi21 If a new coach got rid of Tebow, I’d get rid of the Broncos for good. Not that that’ll happen, because its clear that Tebow is the QB of the future. He just needed to be given a chance to prove himself.

  18. usc#1 says:

I’m glad to see all of us see great hope for Tebow. Tebow will take our team far. He is a born leader and knows how to get the team fired up. He literally carried the team on his shoulder and willed a win. The next head coach will have to accept Tebow as a starting QB. And some so called experts thinks this fact alone will detour potential HC. A lot of people think Tebow will fail. He is already showing them they are wrong. Go Tebow. He has great heart and knows what it takes to win.

  19. gossage970 says:

I gotta tell ya I’m becoming a huge fan of Vickerson. Thomas has some potential as well… if the Broncos can land a top three DT in the 2nd round of the 2011 NFL draft, and look at the 6-5 safety from West Virginia in mid rounds, then we could shoot for Peterson in the first round. I personally would like to see the Broncos trade their first pick for more picks. I expect a lot of defensive talent to be there in the second round, as well as, the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. Champ has earned the right to do whatever he wishes in 2011, so I think he might go to a contender. One thing he did mention was if the line could apply more pressure on the QB, then it would be easier for defensive backs to make plays on the football. If Denver lands a line that Bailey likes, then look for him to give it another shot as a Bronco. With a healthy Dumervil, that could already be established.

  20. gossage970 says:

I think the Broncos should save their money in the 2011 draft by trading down. They are paying 2 HC’s and there might be only a handful of games played next year, if any games being played at all. If the CBA doesn’t work out it’s issues then look for a lot of Juniors to play out their senior year. Free agency is first, let’s see what happens with that.
