Another Start, More Records

December 27th, 2010 - 10:51am by jim_saccomano

It has been awhile since Broncos Country has this much electricity running through it based on the play and potential of one single player.

But the power plant fueling Broncos fandom is on overload today due to the play, potential, charisma and electricity of quarterback Tim Tebow (journalistically, it is appropriate to state his position before his name in a story’s first reference, but I do not think there is a fan in America who does not know Tebow is a quarterback).

I shall leave it to others to argue and debate the growth and development which his potential will reach; as I said last week, no one can predict the future.

However, what one can do, and what I choose to do here is give you a “Dragnet” version (“Just the facts, Ma’am,” as Jack Webb used to say) of his latest start and first at home.

Tim Tebow made just the second start of his pro career Sunday, and his first before the excited home denizens of Invesco Field at Mile High. Erich Schubert of the Broncos’ PR department provided the statistical analysis.

Tebow completed 16-of-29 passes for 308 yards with one touchdown and one interception, finishing with a passer rating of 89.4, and had 10 carries for 27 yards and one rushing TD, leading the Broncos to a come-from-behind win in his first home start.

As Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest of the story.

The 17-point halftime deficit ties for the largest in team history in a game the Broncos came back to win. Frank Tripucka is the only other quarterback in franchise history to bring the Broncos back from that large of a halftime deficit (he did it twice — in 1960 and ’62).

Tebow’s 308 passing yards tie for the most in a single game this season by an NFL rookie.

Tebow’s 308 passing yards rank third in team history in a single game for a rookie QB, and the most since John Elway had 345 vs. Baltimore on December 11, 1983 (ironically, that game was Elway’s first comeback win of his storied career).

Tebow’s 308 passing yards are the MOST EVER for ANY Broncos quarterback, rookie or veteran, in 51 years, in his first career home start.

Tebow’s 19.3 yards per completion against Houston marked the second highest average among all quarterbacks in the NFL in 2010 and ranks second, all-time, in Broncos history (with a minimum of 16 attempts; Jacky Lee accomplished the feat in 1965, 45 years ago).

Tebow Sunday had his third game of the season in which he has had touchdowns both rushing and passing — this despite just two games as a starter. That stat is tied for third among ALL NFL quarterbacks, and Tebow is the only one of the three to have just two starts.

Tebow led the Broncos on two 12-play touchdown drives in the fourth quarter against Houston. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Broncos had just one touchdown drive of more than 10 plays all season.

Tebow had just one three-and-out series against Houston (Denver had 54 three-and-out series this season entering the game, averaging nearly four per contest).

Tebow’s four rushing TDs this season are tied for second among all NFL quarterbacks, leading all rookies.

Tebow’s third down passer rating of 139.1 (6-of-9 for 96 yards and one TD, with no interceptions) vs. Houston was the highest third-down passer rating by a rookie quarterback this year in the entire NFL (minimum nine attempts).

And…

Tebow Sunday became the first rookie since the NFL merger and one of just three quarterbacks overall to lead a 17-point comeback in his first home start.

As Jack Webb said on Dragnet, “Just the facts, Ma’am.”

Draw your own conclusions.

    Great post Jim,

Tebow is something special and the rest of the NFL is eating crow!

  2. monodono says:

Thank’s for the fact’s Mr. Saccomano.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

I must of missed something: ” The 17-point halftime deficit ties for the largest in team history in a game the Broncos came back to win, so Tebow became the FIRST and ONLY quarterback in Denver history to bring us back from that halftime deficit.” So doesn’t it mean another QB did the feat also?

  4. caramelloo says:

    I love this right here…..

“THE GUY NEVER GIVES UP,” declared Broncos linebacker Mario Haggan after the game. “He’s keeping plays going. The more he gets a chance to play, the more confident he gets. You can see that as a defense. When you’ve got a guy making plays, he’ll run the ball and get you a first down with his feet and his arm, and he generates the sense of urgency around the team.”

Sometimes he has so much energy he has trouble spitting out the playcalls.

“He was pumped. A couple of plays he tripped over his words,” running back Lance Ball said, “but that’s Tim.”

    Even then, he was composed.

“He’s just got poise,” running back Correll Buckhalter said. “His first start against Oakland, you’ve kind of got a lot of things going all over the place, which is expected of a rookie quarterback. Today he was real poised, he ran the offense well and we rallied behind him.”

His final play (other than kneeldowns) — when he veered right, turned left and ran for the pylon and the game-winning touchdown, was an apt culmination.

“HE MADE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING,” proclaimed wide receiver Brandon Lloyd when asked about Tebow’s game-winning touchdown run.

“There’s a couple of things I look for out of a young quarterback, which are the same things I look for out of a veteran, which are keeping your poise, having confidence and giving players an opportunity to make plays on the ball,” Lloyd added. “That’s what he did today.”

It can’t be coached, cornerback Champ Bailey said.

“Any coach can try to take credit for it but that’s all God-given ability. And he goes out and gives it all he’s got,” Bailey said. “He’ll take off running. You cant teach that. It’s like what (Michael) Vick does.

“Who can actually teach that? That’s just something you’re given when you’re born.”

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Hahahaha, too funny, Jim realized his error and went in there, deleted the above and replaced it with the following: ” The 17-point halftime deficit ties for the largest in team history in a game the Broncos came back to win. Frank Tripucka is the only other quarterback in franchise history to bring the Broncos back from that large of a halftime deficit (he did it twice — in 1960 and ’62).” Do I get a prize, haha.

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bay,give yourself a pat on the back for that one.LMAO!

  7. grabber says:

“The 17-point halftime deficit ties for the largest in team history in a game the Broncos came back to win, so Tebow became the FIRST and ONLY quarterback in Denver history to bring us back form that halftime deficit.”

Can somebody help me with this? How can Tebow be the first and only QB in team history to bring us back from a 17-point halftime deficit when it TIED the previous record?

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

Like sndvl said, you are the Broncos wiki.lol.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

It goes to show I do read other people’s comments and articles, LOL.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

grabber, you grabbed that one too late Bay beat ya to it.LMAO!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

grabber, too little too late to get the prize, LMAO…

  12. grabber says:

    LOL. Nevermind.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Actually it’s FTR who calls me that…

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

I thought it sounded strange when I read it,I thought it was just me!

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Oh ok,sorry I thought it was sndvl.lol.

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

Haven’t heard from FTR since the win.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

This is by far my favorite stat above:

Tebow led the Broncos on two 12-play touchdown drives in the fourth quarter against Houston. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Broncos had just one touchdown drive of more than 10 plays all season.

Keeping drives alive, something obviously Orton just cannot do.

  18. S.D.Bronco30 says:

This also shows a lot about his ability to keep drives alive, and Orton’s inability to do the same.

“Tebow had just one three-and-out series against Houston (Denver had 54 three-and-out series this season entering the game, averaging nearly four per contest).

  19. timtebowfan says:

Only Tebow can make a big gator fan become a big Denver Broncos fan! I am getting my Broncos t-shirt now. GO TEBOW! GO BRONCOS! Love this man!

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

“Tebow led the Broncos on scoring drives of 80, 71, 74 and 76 yards in the second half”.

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

timtebowfan, climb aboard we have plenty of room on this Tebow bandwagon,I’m sure the driver (OC) won’t mind! lol.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Makes you think McCoy took the chains off Tebow in the 2nd half!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

timtebowfan, we’re not difficult, we’ll take new Bronco fans however we can get them, haha.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, but like I just said in the last blog:

McCoy’s play calling was horrendous in the first half, he just basically let Tebow lose in the second half only because there was nothing to lose down 0-17, so in essence he stumbled into all that, nothing great in my opinion.

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

Tebow has fans following him to Denver, people love this guy and I can see why.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

McCoy gets no praise in my book either,it was all Tebow!

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

The Broncos bought out McD’s contract.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

I guess that’s his bonus for getting us Tebow.

  29. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well he will get the buyout info Tuesday.

  30. BeastFromEast92 says:

That’s the only good that came outta McD,but he still put us in a big hole!

  31. baylinorcrush says:

I really don’t care about all that since it has no implications on the salary cap, it’s basically something for Bowlen to deal with and that’s all. He made the mistake to hire him, so he pays the consequences, sounds fair to me.

  32. timtebowfan says:

Thr is a big crowd heading that way already. Getting the T’s before the prices sky rockets! ha ha

  33. monodono says:

Bay, in response to your “This is by far my favorite stat above:

Tebow led the Broncos on two 12-play touchdown drives in the fourth quarter against Houston. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Broncos had just one touchdown drive of more than 10 plays all season.

Keeping drives alive, something obviously Orton just cannot do.” post.

This also show’s how different The Coaches are calling the games. It is more conservative but also more consistant. They are calling more run play’s on first down, and more play action, coupled with the boots they added in the second half = 12 play drives.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

I’ll definitely wait for the new orange jerseys of 2012 before I buy me a Tebow one. I have 8 other ones to wear until then so I’m good, haha.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Too bad all this good crap comes to show in the second half of the second to last game of the season, LOL.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Everyone here should know what I always called McD, “better late than never McD”, and it’s obvious his imprint on the regime is having lasting effects, haha.

  37. papacy808 says:

Changing my fb profile pic to Tebow… Go Broncos… Asking all Tebow fans to do the same…

  38. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Tebow was phenomenal…First second half I think Ive watched all season or should i say i remember all season…cuz usually by half time im so disgusted I stopped watching this season.

We have all been saying it…give Tebow a chance to do what he does best…he is not a conservative guy…throw him out there and give him a chance to make a play. My only hope is that the first half play calling was part of McCoys game plan to lul the Defense into a false sense of security…Because when Tebow came out slinging in the second half, The defense didnt know what hit them…they looked like they were still trying to play the screens and the runs.

The kid throws so well on the run too…he just flat out makes plays and ive said it all year…the defense is bad…but the Offense didnt use to do em any favors so I always said the D gave up on the O…Not only did Tebows energize the O…He energized the D…and made em think “man lets do our part, this kid is dedicated to doing anything it takes to let us win”…..the Defensive play calling on the other hand was pretty bad by wink….so many blitzes when we know they have been torching us with the TEs and that covering TEs is our weakness and they have some of the best….

Much props to bucky…after this game I almost wanna keep him on the roster cuz honestly….When he is healthy…the man can flat out play…But he is rarely ever healthy. But he even said it himself “as long as I am here playing RB ill do everything I can to help him (tebow) get a win” or something to that effect. Im sure he knows he is on the bubble…many of them probably know they are especially with a new regime coming in, but Buck played well. Forgot Knowshon was hurt…woulda picked up buck in my fantasy instead of playing Hillis against Baltimore…and I woulda won too cuz Buck did work. All I can say is the Future is looking up…and thats all I had hoped for….HOPE for the future…and ladies and gentlemen….we’ve got hope.

  39. BeastFromEast92 says:

Are the new Orange jerseys going to be a different shade of Orange?
I hope not, don’t wanna shell out that kinda dough.LOL.

  40. socalbigbroncofan says:

What a tebow cristmas. So happy. What a game. To top it off my got my Tebow jersery and my sons did too. All suprises by my wife. And we all wore our jerseys for the game. It finally came TEBOW TIME.

  42. strandoftds says:

I knew all along. Tebow did what he always doe`s. I`ve been preachen it all year. I knew it was in him. HaHa!! Broncosfreak30, I hear ya dude. The Bronco`s should have started him way back then against the Rams. Oh well. We got our wish. We saw a new era start yesterday at home. I LOVE IT!!

  43. oldsouthstander says:

What I liked most about the game was the comment that one of the announcers made. I don’t remember which one said it but his comment was that Tebow was making throws that he didn’t think he was capable of making. Another TT convert!!!
The energy that TT has given the Broncos is so thick that you can almost taste it!
Delighted to see SD eliminated from the hunt. The big question now is will it deflate the Chargers or get them totally po’ed and take it out on the Broncos Sunday. Hope it deflates thewm.
The win is even sweeter in that it didn’t cost the Broncos a draft position.

  44. strandoftds says:

Well said Oldsouthstander. We may be pick #2 after all is said and done.

  45. Broncfalls says:

I like the quote from Orton. He said he was told that Tebow will start the following game at home against San Diego. Studesville and Tebow declined to comment.

    ….uh ya think! LMFAO!

could you imagine if Denver didn’t start Tebow. Fans would burn that stadium down :)

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I wont lie…I want the number 2 pick…but I want to kick the chargers butts even more…And not just cuz I hate the chargers…but because people say, Tebow only did good cuz Houston Texans have the WORST pass defense. Which is true….And I understand for these Tebow haters…nothing will ever be enough…But chargers are a good team on paper with the best Defense in the NFL and the Best Passing Defense in the NFL…This will be a great challenge for Tebow and if he comes out on top, not only did he just get a taste of thrashing divisional rivals….he beat a pretty good team…and is 2-0 at home…Sounds like a plan to me lol.

  47. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Tebow is a believe (of God) and knows God works in mysterious ways…And I am starting to think that the only reason McDaniels was hired by the Broncos…was to deliver Tebow to us because no other coach woulda drafted him for the broncos (especially if cutler was still here) … Might sound a lil farfetched, especially for non believers and especially because Tebow hasnt proved anything yet…But I have always said, the kid i a respectable young man, with great work ethic, and has the big man upstairs on his side…He will succeed. He has at every level and there have been doubters at every level…The NFL is just another pinacle he has to conquer…And it takes hard work and we all know the kid isnt afraid to work. Wanted him to start since bye week…get him some experience under his belt and maybe even make playoffs (I was gettign mad that everyone was associating starting a rookie QB with giving up….what about the 1 in a million chance he surprises u?). Im loking forward to next year…They need to name the new regime as soon as week 17 is over so that tebow can start getting acquainted…

  48. BeastFromEast92 says:

Everybody says Tebow played good against one of the worst Defenses in the NFL,well Arizona’s Defense is ranked one spot above Houston at #28,and Orton had a passer rating of 27.1!!!!

Tebows passer rating against Oakland was 100.5 !!!

  49. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Peter King on Tebow:

Nearly lost in the Broncos’ 49-29 rout of the Chiefs: the emergence of Tim Tebow as a passer and runner. Tebow’s not going to replace Kyle Orton anytime soon, and he probably doesn’t have a chance to do so, rightfully, until 2012; that’s how good Orton has been. But Tebow ran for a one-yard score in the second quarter Sunday, then threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Larson in the third quarter, a long-awaited first NFL pass from Tebow.

Goes to show what the so called experts know.LOL.
