America’s Favorite Sport

March 30th, 2010 - 11:46am by jim_saccomano

NFL football in particular and football in general is bigger than ever in every way, certainly beginning with the all-important category of fan interest.

Last week one of the USA TODAY Snapshots (a quick poll of readers which the paper does daily, on a variety of topics) asked the question, “What is America’s favorite sport?”

Here is exactly how the responses appeared in USA TODAY:

Pro Football 35%

Pro Baseball 16%

College Football 12%

Auto Racing 9%

Pro Men’s Basketball 5%

It’s one of those things that we in the business take for granted, but those are somber numbers to look at. Basically, Americans have indicated that for 47% of us, the sport of football is the nation’s favorite.

This is something that we are proud of and do not take for granted here at the Denver Broncos.

Our web site, on which you are reading this blog, is the most highly visited web site for football stories and information in the Rocky Mountain time zone, including all media web sites.

But we have to provide value, worth and innovation to keep those numbers high, and we plan to be very aggressive in doing just that in 2010. In fact, our goal is a high growth number for the new season.

The publication “Advertising Age” recently stated that Americans want information fast, they hope it is accurate, and they do not care where they get it – that is, they are not only not exclusively reliant on traditional sources like newspapers and TV, but they go to a lot of places for this info, and they return to those which provide what they want most often.

Eighty-eight percent of Americans say they visit multiple media sites for information daily, and team web sites are very high among the most frequently visited.

I think 2010 will show more than ever that DenverBroncos.com is the place to get Broncos news fastest, and in the highest volume.

It is worth noting that the above poll did not allow for high school football as a favorite, and many would say they choose the prep game over both the NFL and colleges, so that total popularity figure lurches toward 50% of the nation in total numbers.

One of the challenges we have in maintaining popularity for our game (and our web site) is to embrace change and innovation, particularly in the areas of information technology.

Stay tuned and keep watching and reading, it’s going to be a very exciting year for the Broncos in 2010.

if he falls to us…we are taking berry, undoubtedly…we will more than likely take the best player on the board (Moreno)…might seem like a waste with Dawkins and Hill….but ive heard talk of berry possibly playing CB in the pros, so if he doesnt get his shot yet at safety, maybe some Nickle. Still a waste for such a talent…he really is a Luxury…

BFE92: Agree with your 09:07pm post on 03/30/10. I’d be glad to see us draft either McClain or Dan Williams. I’m leaning more towards Williams.

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

rbf1 thanks, just hope we get value with our picks,we can’t afford to come away from this draft without getting some good quality players.

  6. brian_schneider says:

We’d better get some good draft picks this year because next year when we win the SB we’ll be picking 32nd.

  7. yosemitesam says:

    Mr. Saccomano:

I am one of the Bronco faithful and I attended a lot of games back in the 80s when games were still cheap enough for an average Joe like me. As prices have increased, you have priced me out of the market for watching games at the stadium. You are lucky in that you still enough fans in Denver that can afford the high prices at games. I currently live outside of Colorado, and I have even been priced out of the TV market: the NFL Sunday ticket prices are too rich for my blood given that I only really want the Bronco games that I don’t get on regular TV.

I am concerned about a lockout. First, note that I do not have a dog in this fight. I cannot relate to millionaire players and I certainly can’t relate to billionaire owners. Neither of those groups worry about whether I can pay my power bill when they are fighting about the extra millions that us fans are giving to them. They talk about “revenue enhancement” which is code for further separating fans from their money. I am sorry that the millionairs and billionaires can’t make ends meet, but frankly, I’m in a worse position than they are.

If you take football away from me, I will quit. I’m loyal to the Broncos, but I need them to be loyal to me. If you have a lockout, I will leave and never look back. You will have shown me that I mean nothing to you, and believe me when I say I will return the favor.

As of now, to show you how upset I am at the prospect of a lockout, I will now refuse to buy any more NFL gear. No jerseys, no hats, not even a keychain. It’s the only way I have to show you how upset I am. It appears that money is the only language the NFL understands, and so I am keeping mine until you show me that you are not willing to lockout us fans. And you can take this to the bank.

    Well said yosemitesam..well said.

  9. sndvl says:

Couldnt have said it better yosemite… as a family that is lucky enough to hold 8 season tickets, we too may be forced to spend our hard earned thousands elswhere.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

I heard that yosemite….the average Joe is getting left outta everything.

    @sndvl…LMAO

  11. TheRoyalBeast says:

    I agree well said yosemite

I think the NFL has forgotten that they run on “fan power”. Not just the NFL many people and organizations forget that and just worry about being more in the black than they already are….NFL Organization ” DARN IT!! We made 10 billion this year, I bet we can make 10 billion and one dollars” (fictional numbers of course) but like yosemite said, maybe i don’t understand the position of both sides because i am neither a billionaire or a millionaire…Im sure there is more to the CBA issue than Dollars but it always comes down to Dollars and the rich trying to get richer….if i was in their shoes, I may do the same…never know, but from where i seat….its just ridiculous. But im sure if we ask the Organizations or the players…they would say…”Its the principle” lmao

PS: I am cool with either McClain or Dan Williams…Prefrably McClain but I would be just as happy about Dan….

  12. TheRoyalBeast says:

    FYI

Broncos’ 2010 preseason schedule: at Cincinnati (Wk 1), vs. Detroit (Wk 2), vs. Pittsburgh (Wk 3), at Minnesota (Wk 4).

  13. broncofanlvnm says:

    sndvl,
Funny cartoon! It was a reference to that opener in Buffalo a few years ago. BTW, tried the Bronco’s Dip at my grandson’s B-day party last Saturday and it came out awesome. Everyone loved it!

  14. mizikfan27 says:

I love this, they put us up against probably some of the other teams that might have more media coverage then we do! Cincy with the whole ocho cinci and TO, Detroit and we all know what there problem is(just in case WINNING),pitt I mean come on with the Rothlesberger and now Holmes, and Minnesota well Favre, obviously!!!!! Now all of a sudden I don’t feel so bad, but they all make for a great media frenzy in some sort!

I do believe the CBA will end up working out because there is WAY to much money sitting on the table for each side not to grab it! Either it goes to both sides or nobody, to me it seems pretty simple, considering the money they could lose if they don’t agree!

Yes, Mclain or Williams are the best option, trade down would be the best!!!

  15. brian_schneider says:

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d8173fe9c&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

If Bryant is letting people get inside his head this early what’s going to happen when he has to face a premier CB jawing at him?

I think he “don’t” like the critics talking bad about him. He “don’t” deserve that. Oh and forgetting your cleats has everything to do with your ability to play football. LOL!!

  16. mizikfan27 says:

The one thing about is HE CAN play football and thats the reason why the prospect that he is! Just watch him at OSU and tell me he doesn’t deserve a first round draft pick. Things do change in the NFL and I do think will be a VERY productive wideout and I would not be mad if we drafted him especially if they plan on getting Marshall…..Not a Bronco!

  17. BroncosRmyReligion says:

Once again Congrats J.Elam, well deserving of a R.O.F. and H.O.F. hands down. #1

Nicely said yosemitesam, maybe if the fans were to do a holdout like the Browns fans were going to do last season, maybe they would open up their eyes and realize that it’s the fans that run there businesses. If it wasn’t for the purchasing of tickets, merchandise, etc, etc then they wouldn’t be putting money into there pockets. But I don’t know the inside scoop of it all but usually everything @ the end of the day it ends with the dollar, just hope they resort it and continue on with a 2012 season.

    Go Broncos!!!

  18. mizikfan27 says:

Have to say congrats as well to Elam, one of the greatest kickers of all time if not the best!! congrats again HOF ALL THE WAY!!!!!

  19. MarshMelo15 says:

I know this sounds crazy but I would be up for trading UP and grabing CB Joe Haden out of Florida..I mean lets face it, he is the most talented CB in the draft, and Champ Bailey and Goody are not getting any younger. We really need some good talented depth at that position to learn from Champ before it is too late….

  20. mizikfan27 says:

I like Haden too, but there are way too many more pressing needs that we have that we can use at #11 or trade down, then lose draft picks and trade up! We used practically a 1st round draft pick last year on a cornerback. Its only Smiths second year, give him a chance!

  21. broncos20 says:

    agree with you mizikfan27 on giving Smith’s chance…he was a ballhawk @wakeforest…
Mclain and a Center or OG in first two picks….

  22. Cali_BroncosFan says:

I wanted to bust in tears when Elam was mentioning Elway, Sharpe, Davis, Nalen, ahhh good times :(

  23. broncos20 says:

or pick someone else in first round, then Spikes in a later round…Spikes wont be chasing down any TEs, but he plays smash-mouth football (RayLewis?) and he’ll keep the run in check..

  24. TheRoyalBeast says:

I agree with Broncos20 and Mizik

Give phonzie a chance. I already consider him a bust and a bad decision but w/e. I just never see where trading next years 1st round for a 2nd round in the current year is a good idea. Especially when that year doesnt have that much depth not to mention the fact that u passed on him TWICE with your first 2 first round picks…evidently, he wasnt worth a 1st

If we had kept it, coulda gotten Haden this year. McD was just being an impatient douche. Anyway, but yea, give phonzie a chance. Draft McClain and then OG/C in second round and in 3rd rd CB Akwasi Owusu Ansah (a ball hawk and returner) and RB Charles Scott (POWER RB)…and do what they will with the rest. I am also up for getting Dan Williams with our first pick or OL with our first 2 picks, and spikes in mid rounds since his stock has fallen…

    good day broncos country…

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

    How does this grab you???

    1.Dan Williams NT
    2.J.D. Walton OC
3.Brandon Spikes ILB -you don’t have to be fast to stop the run
    4.Charles Scott/Anthony Dixon RB-(powerbacks)
6.Pass catching TE if Sheff leaves
    7.OL

I think with Williams at NT and Spikes at ILB along with DJ our run D would be much improved.

A lot of fans say we don’t need a NT,ILB,or RB.
But we all agree we need help on the Oline.
We definitely gotta get Pouncey or Walton,I prefer Walton with a 2nd or 3rd pick.

  26. Theroyalbroncos says:

I know he has off the field issuses but i would like the broncos to get dez bryant because with him and marshall on the otherside and royal at the slot our offense would look so good then i would like them to get an OG in the 2nd round mmmmm!!!

  27. FTR says:

    I agree with bronco20.
Spikes needs to be on our radar. Leadership upside is huge if he can control himself. B Dawk could tutor the warrior. In a 3-4 your inside guy dos not have to be speedy, it’s always good to be fast but more important is heart and going 100 percent hard ball and that’s Spikes. Just like Al Wilson.
    FTR

  28. Olap2009 says:

    Go Redskins

  29. florio's_mom says:

What do you know? It’s already that time of the month when olap2009 comes in here and says “go redskins.”

Getting really old man. Your not exactly making a point anymore. Everybody here gets it, you like shanny…..a lot obviously. LOL

  30. MarshMelo15 says:

On a side note…… I am a HUGE Nuggets fan, and I really thought that this could be our year. However, we REALLY need Kenyon Martin back in our line up. Without him we have really not played to our potential, we have lost 5 out of our last 6 games, which is way uncaracteristic of our beloved Nuggets. If K-Mart is not back in time for the post season, you could kiss us goodbye. He is an intergral part of our team and is the 3rd of our Big 3(Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and Kenyon Martin), and he is our best defender. PLEASE K-Mart get healthy soon!!!!!! We NEED you!!!!!!!

Sorry, I know this is a Broncos blog, but as I said I am a HUGE Nuggets fan and I just needed to vent a little about how this season is turning out.

    GO Broncos!!!! and GO Nuggets!!!!

  31. MarshMelo15 says:

Oh yeah… And While I’m talking Nuggets too, I almost forgot to wish George Karl a speedy and healthy recover from cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!

  32. broncosfreak30 says:

Hey guys, just found out some interesting news that got me really excited!! I have watched Shipley play and I have wanted to take a wide receiver in this draft. I don’t want Bryant unless we lose Marshall but Shipley looks like he could be the next Wes Welker and it looks like we agree with that…

Texas receiver Jordan Shipley is expected to be among the rookies who make a pre-draft visit to Denver. Shipley is a productive player, who could be intriguing to Denver in the mid rounds.

  33. BeastFromEast92 says:

bf30 Shipley I think will make a great WR in the NFL,wouldn’t mind picking him up in a later round.

  34. akeem0707 says:

OK Bronco nation this is how i think our draft should go.
1st dez bryant WR (b-marsh,eddie royal, and dez bryant who can gaurd that)
2nd jahvid best RB(way faster than moreno and great in return game to releive eddie royal)
3rd micah jonhson ILB (great tackler kinda quick very instinctive and close holes very quick not too mention he’s huge)
4th Akwasi Owusu Ansah CB (ball hawk can hit in open space)
5th Any OL left (because some of the not known one’s have the best size ,technique and attitude)
6th and 7th dont matter to me as long as we use wisely

Ok thats my draft and this is why i choose them
alright dez bryant because even tho people say he’s a diva in the vedio on the website he looks very mature he said yes sir and maam and the deon sanders situation wasnt him being wild he just shows his youngness by lien.

jahvid best because he’s super super quick make’s great cuts and even tho we have moreno and buckhalter, buck is getting old and injury prone and moreno isnt going to break any long runs also if we get him we can remove eddie royal from ST and keep him at WR and he wont have to take so many tackles and we can keep him healthy

micah johnson is very big and fits the 3-4 shceme very well because he’s not the fastest guy but at the ILB spot you are really to stop inside runs witch he does so very well and we can keep mario haggan at OLB
also he has a great attitude and doesnt matter where he goes he just want’s to do his best(whitch i love)

Akwasi Owusu Ansah I like him because like phonsie he’s a great ball hawk and even tho they wont have the worlds best season thier first year because they are not used to playing grown men that run 4.35 and precision routes and QB’s that have laser arms they will have to adjust to all of that just give them TIME (can anyone tell me any corner who’s first year was great)

all of the other picks dont matter as long as we use them very strategically..

    SO PEOPLE PLEASE COMMENT

    Jim,
As VP of Corporate Communications, I had to comment on your statement:
“I think 2010 will show more than ever that DenverBroncos.com is the place to get Broncos news fastest, and in the highest volume.”
To be honest the main site does not provide this information. I tend to get news faster from sites like NFL.com and sometimes even quicker from cbs4denver.com/sports
I hope that you can deliver on this statement as I would prefer to get news quicker and directly from DenverBroncos.com.
2010 is going to be a great year for the Broncos however keep up all the great work on the main site.

  38. Orange_Crusher says:

We better hire Adam Schefter if we want to be the first to know Bronco news….lol

Maybe Jim can get Adams Twitter posted on this site?

It seems that players and agents leak the big information out before the official news can break…?

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS!!!!

  39. footballMANIAC says:

I don’t want Best. We’ve already got a finesse RB in Moreno. We need a POWER back, especially now that Hillis is gone. Besides, I hate speed RBs anyway. They’re just as likely to take a loss as a big gain.

  40. strandoftds says:

Shipley would be a great pick in 2nd or3rd round.

  41. BeastFromEast92 says:

    akeem0707…..It’s Broncos Country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

I do like Micah Johnson LB,if we can’t get McClain or Spikes,of course Sean Lee,and Washington are good too.Out of the 5 surely we can get one of them.

  43. akeem0707 says:

    sorry broncos country
but football maniac obviously mcD doesnt want a power back (he let hillis go)so why would he draft a young inexperienced power runner

ok but for all of you dummies who say we should draft an DL if any of you so called true fans actually pay attention we just got an entire new DL (bannan, green, and williams)so why in the h**l would we draft a linemen c-mon man…

ok on spikes and mcclain i dont like either one of them because to me they just wouldnt fit in our 3-4 D

  44. rebelbronco says:

Akeem0707, all of those DL we brought in are over 30!! They are here for immediate impact and experience. The draft is for depth and the future young talent we will need to be successfull. We have to get younger and deeper at the DL. Picking DL or OL I believe is critical to the success of this team for years to come.

  45. akeem0707 says:

we only let go of one of our other DL

  46. rebelbronco says:

I’ve been calling for McClain at ILB with our first pick, but I will be happy with Williams from Tennessee also.

I agree with footballmaniac, we do not need Best or any type of speed back. We need a powerback, and they can be picked up in the later rounds. We brought back JJ Arrington to be the kick returner and punt returner. He will practice with the RB’s but his duty will be stricktly return man.

Take DL and OL with the first two picks, gat a power back in the third, and take shipley in the fourth. He could be the second coming of Easy Ed McCafree

  47. rebelbronco says:

Yeah, and they did real well for us down the strech last year.

  48. brian_schneider says:

akeem0707: Hillis may have been a “power back” but I don’t think McD thought he fit his system.

  49. Broncfalls says:

    WOW! lot’s of passion……

IMO, fans can try their best to “boycott” the NFL however, it’s impossible…but let me know how that works out for you. I’m not saying that I don’t understand the frustration, it’s just that I know I’ll NEVER stop watching Bronco football..EVER!

I don’t care what they argue about! Thousands, millions, billions…don’t care! Just take the field and play football. If it comes to a lockout, I’ll pray it ends quickly….play football.

IMHO, the fans will be back! Say what you will, I have a feeling NOBODY will stop watching Broncos football that’s on this blog. Maybe….maybe a couple….Think that’ll make the difference? Not saying I don’t understand, just don’t hold your breath!

It’s like that stupid email you get about pumping gas from certain gas stations because of the middle east crap…think that helped? We’re dealing with a GIANT! every single fan would have to do the same thing to make a dent…good luck with that and the NFL knows it!

    ….no dissrespect towards anyone!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS
