A Team and the Time Continuum

February 8th, 2012 - 1:41pm by jim_saccomano

The Super Bowl is over, the confetti is being swept up in New York’s Canyon of Heroes, players are in or headed to any number of recreational sites to heal their wounds and get some R and R.

And within organizations, the building for next year is under way.

A key factor for all to remember is that each season is its own, it has its own ups and downs, its own results and ultimately, it deserves its own dignity.

The Denver Broncos from 1986 through 1998 won 14 playoff games in that 13-year span, including five Super Bowl appearances and back to back world championships.

It was an era unmatched in Broncos history and rarely matched by any other NFL franchises.

Since then, in the following 13 years, the Broncos have won just two playoff games. Broncos fans know that fact just as well, as most people cheered through both eras.

But there is always a steady flow to the passage of time—when does one period begin and another leave off?

That period of great team success featured John Elway as the Broncos quarterback, no small coincidence, as anyone who knows the game is aware of the value of having an all-time great as signal caller.

And last year John Elway returned to the Broncos, this time as executive vice president of football operations.

This is a new era, with the year 2012 season two of this new era, and right now the Broncos are one-for-one in making the playoffs, and winning a playoff game.

This is now.

The just concluded season was a great one for Broncos fans, a thrill ride that excited and tested every emotion fans can have.

Now, a new team is being built, one which will feature many of the very same players, growing and developing their skill sets to improve themselves and the team. But because healthy competition is an inevitable and necessary part of pro football,
There will be new players here as well, some acquired through free agency and some acquired form colleges and universities via the draft and post draft signings.

And when the new season’s camp begins, the fastest and strongest and hardest working and most skilled will be determined.

Time will march on, but it will be a new season.

So revel in the joy of the exciting year we just experienced, but remember that 2012 is like an unwrapped present under the Christmas tree. We can’t be sure what is in the package, but it is always exciting to unwrap it!

Next up for the Broncos and the other 31 teams are the scouting combine in Indianapolis, free agency, OTA’s and the draft.

It is all part of the process of time marching on in the NFL.

Enjoy the past, be excited for the future, but revel in the present. That’s where we are right now.

As Chuck Knox, longtime NFL head coach for the Rams and Seahawks, used to say, “The past is a cancelled check. The future is a promissory note. But today is cash.”

Let’s not worry about future answers—they will take care of themselves as given the opportunity.

The now looks pretty good for both the Broncos and the NFL.

    Repost from last blog-

Looks like Tebow is already involved in politics.

It’s unclear how many potential future NFL players have slipped through the cracks in Virginia, never to see their potential realized due to the state’s strict laws outlining who can and who cannot play high school football.

Thanks to a new law that passed by a vote of 59 to 39 in the Virginia House of Delegates, however, tens of thousands of home-schooled students in the state are one step closer to being able to play sports at their local high school.

The “Tebow Bill,” named in honor of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow , who played high school football in Florida while being home schooled, will now be sent to the Virginia Senate, according to The Washington Post .

“Home-school parents pay taxes like everybody else,” Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) recently told the newspaper. “It’s just fair.”

The legislation has been introduced in Virginia since 2005 with little success, according to The Post. McDonnell has pledged to sign the bill if it passes both chambers.

Great article Jim. Well said too. Time marches on. No time to look back, just forward.

The NFL College Combine is in 2 weeks, looking forward to watching it on NFLN.

I know a young man here that was home schooled here, due to medical reasons, and home schooling is no picnic. They have more stringent rules on them and harder testing than they have in the public school system. I am glad to see more states taking this stand. No telling what kind of talent this will uncover.

  9. strandoftds says:

Weatherman1, I hear you on the Rainey situation. With the Broncos, Parrish Cox leaves a bad taste in their mouth with the same ramifications, not a good thing whatsoever.

Tim Tebow Hannah Storm Interview: Broncos QB Shows Poise Under Pressure

By Josh Martin(Featured Columnist) on February 8, 2012

Say what you want about Tim Tebow’s skills as a NFL quarterback (or lack thereof), but there’s no doubting that the Denver Broncos star is one cool customer.

On and off the football field.

Tebow demonstrated his signature poise in a recent interview with Hannah Storm, presumably as part of ESPN’s effort to keep “Tebowmania” going strong long after the Super Bowl. In typical Tebow fashion, he deferred credit to his teammates when discussing his surprising successes from the 2011 season and emphasized how thankful he was for the opportunity to play, rather than dwelling on any bitterness that the preseason kerfuffle around Broncos camp might have precipitated.

When asked about handling criticism and outside distractions, Tebow reiterated the importance of remaining focused on the task at hand and not allowing himself to get caught up in the media circus that’s formed around his every step since his Heisman Trophy days at Florida.

Of course, Tebow’s “secrets” to success should come as no surprise to those who’ve followed his rise from third-stringer to Mile High icon (or have had the story shoved down their throats by the Worldwide Leader, et al).

Tebow may not have the requisite physical skills and abilities to be a great quarterback—not yet, anyway—but what he lacks in measurables, he more than makes up for in leadership, “stick-to-it-iveness” and mental toughness.

Those qualities are not easily taught and Tebow’s lucky enough to have them in abundance.

Whether that’s enough to please John Fox and John Elway, or win football games going forward, remains to be seen. That being said, if Tebow continues to handle the pressure and the expectations the way he has thus far and refines the physical aspects of his game then there’s no telling how far the Broncos can go with him under center.

    Franchise tag, who’s it?
    February, 7, 2012
    By Bill Williamson

Denver Broncos, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley: Bunkley played tremendously last season for Denver and he was an unsung hero on an improved defense. He is a priority to re-sign. But I think Denver would likely consider giving him a long-term deal instead of giving him the franchise tag. Kicker Matt Prater could also be a candidate to get the tag.

Someone asked on an earlier blog about Tebow and DWTS. Here is the official answer for him dancing thias year.

Tim Tebow will not be competing on the upcoming season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’

    2/7/2012

    Samantha Yeh

Dancing With the Stars has transformed a number of clumsy athletes to ballroom dancing professionals, but Tim Tebow will not be one of them — not yet, at least.

Despite rumors the Denver Broncos quarterback was interested in competing on DWTS, a spokesperson for the team said Tebow would not be a featured contestant this upcoming season.

Broncos spokesperson Patrick Smyth told The Wrap, “Tim does not have any interest in participating in the show,” saying that Tebow will be focusing on training for the 2012 football season.

Rumors flew in full force after DWTS current mirror ball champion J.R. Martinez told Celebuzz he met Tebow over the weekend at Super Bowl festivities.

“I did actually come across Tim Tebow and we chatted about [DWTS] for a second. I thought he’d do pretty well on the show,” Martinez said in the interview with Celebuzz.

Despite Martinez’s words of encouragement, Tebow isn’t going to be stepping onto the ballroom floor anytime soon.

“He said ‘maybe in a year,” Martinez said.

Tebow addressed the rumors first hand in an interview with HLN late last week.

“I don’t think so, I’m going to be pretty busy training and getting ready for football season,” he said. “I think their show is great and it’s fun but I don’t think this season is right for me yet.”

HollywoodLife.com reported in January that Tebow, Jersey Shore star J-Woww and former GOP candidate Michele Bachmann were all being considered for the show’s 14th season.

The complete lineup for Dancing With The Stars will be announced Feb. 28 on Good Morning America.

Denver Broncos’ Knowshon Moreno hit with DUI charge
    Posted: 02/06/2012 05:30:16 PM MST
    February 7, 2012 12:55 PM GMT Updated: 02/07/2012 05:55:41 AM MST

    By Lindsay H. Jones

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno was arrested last week in Denver on a drunken driving charge. The Broncos issued a statement Monday acknowledging the arrest of the 2009 first-round draft pick.

“We take the incident involving Knowshon Moreno very seriously and are thoroughly reviewing this matter,” the team’s statement said. “Our organization will continue to gather information and closely monitor this issue while the legal process runs its course.”

Moreno, 24, was pulled over Feb. 1 while driving a Bentley at about 70 mph on Interstate 25 near Quincy Avenue and Union Avenue, according to a report by Denver television station KDVR-31. The posted speed limit in the area usually is 65 mph but is currently posted at 45 mph because it’s a construction zone.

Police gave Moreno a breath test and a field sobriety test and took the former Georgia star to a detox facility. He was charged with DUI, failing to have insurance and careless driving. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 2, court records state.

The personalized license plate on the car Moreno was driving read “SAUCED,” according to KDVR-31.

Moreno is recovering from surgery to repair a knee injury he suffered in a Nov. 13 game at Kansas City. Moreno lost his starting job at tailback earlier in the season to Willis McGahee, who ended up rushing for 1,199 yards in his first season with the Broncos.

Moreno, the 12th pick of the 2009 draft, is under contract for the 2012 season, the fourth year of his five-year rookie contract.

  14. seweatherman1 says:

    A. His knee must be feeling a lot better. Seems he has found a new way to rehab it I guess.

    B. Driving a BENTLEY with NO INSURANCE!!! How much does this guy make in a year?

  15. strandoftds says:

I was watching ESPN and saw that Mel Kiper jr. has us taking Vontaze Burfict MLB at #25 overall.

  16. strandoftds says:

No insurance! Are you kidding me?

  17. seweatherman1 says:

No strand I’ll repeat his part. Pretty unbelieveable if you ask me.

He was charged with DUI, failing to have insurance and careless driving. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 2, court records state.

  18. strandoftds says:

Driving a Bentley with a lic. plate reading (Sauced) is a big target for saying PULL ME OVER! Real bright!

  19. strandoftds says:

Ah, OK. I get ya now.

  20. strandoftds says:

I knew about the DUI. Crazy!

  21. seweatherman1 says:

You would think that with his playing performance this past season, he would be concentrating on something a bit different than this.

I hope Dove Valley sends a real strong message about this.

  22. strandoftds says:

Ah heck, draft Doug Martin or Chris Polk in the 2nd round. Unless the plan on pick Rainey in the next round or two. Who needs Moreno.

  23. seweatherman1 says:

Some players need to realize that the cattle market is about to open. Now is the time to be on your best behavior, especiaslly if your past season(s) were not stellar season(s).

  24. seweatherman1 says:

Been good conversing today guys (and gals). Later.

  25. Tide Bronco says:

“According to Denver district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough, Moreno also is being charged with failure to have PROOF of insurance. He was issued a police summons and is due back in court March 2.

In Alabama, we are always required to have a proof of insurance certificate or card in your vehicle or wallet. If not, a citation is issued if you’re stopped for any reason. Maybe it’s that way in Denver, too.

  26. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I think its that way most places Tide.

  27. broncos20 says:

I might be looking too far ahead.. I was looking at the Rivals Top 100 players last year and this year and I’m excited to see the potential beast coming out in the next 2 yrs or so. :D

DE Clowney- Hands down dominating (Peppers-like)
CBs -Cameron Burrow at 6’1 195lbs 4.4 40 (size like champ, compared to Namndi)
    -Kendall Fuller at 6’0 185
WR- Dorial Green-Beckam at 6’6 220lbs and 4.43 speed. tell me that aint
    another Megatron or Andre Johnson….
    ILB- Manti Te’o

Ok back to current.. so which Rainey are we talking about? I was too lazy to go back and look.. sorry.

  28. Bronco_Turtle says:

    ***HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN FOX!!!!***

  29. Tide Bronco says:

@S.D: I assumed it was, and like Alabama as well, even if you do have insurance but don’t have the proof on you or in your car, you’re still cited, is what I meant, but didn’t make clear. Sorry.

  30. S.D.Bronco30 says:

oh, yeah, actually that was what I was thinking. thats how it is here in So. Dak. We were on same page but just did not say it well!

  31. Greatness007 says:

Broncos are sending smoke screens about drafting a QB. They will bring in a vat though. The idea of drafting one is a smoke screen!!!!!

  32. Greatness007 says:

    Veteran not vat*

  33. Bronco_Turtle says:

    :o

Thanks Greatness… How have you been? and is the Vet gonna be Vince Young?

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

Tide, in Wyoming you have 3 days to produce proof if you get caught without… they will site you but then cancel the ticket if you send them a copy of your information.

  35. strandoftds says:

I think Young would be a good backup QB to Tebow with the type of offensive scheme thats catered to Tims stregths. Vince would fit in nicely.

  36. strandoftds says:

    new blog.

  37. Tide Bronco says:

Nice write-up Jim! Looking forward to the future.

  38. broncoslifer07 says:

vince young!!!!! are you kidding me? he was a headache for fisher in tennessee and half his teammates hated him, remember he quit on his team after a week 6 loss in 2010 (im guessing roughtly on the date). i dont know how he was doing as a teammate in philly, but if were serious about winning a SB we dont need him splitting our locker room in 2

  39. tnalen66 says:

    Vince Yuck!

  40. lisasepiphany says:

    I live here, too…

I’m worried that we are money-driven here in Denver to the utter exclusion of moral value. That’s not to say that there are not good people here, but our local economy reflects one upmanship, rather than prosperous ability.

That said, with regard to your quote: “As Chuck Knox, longtime NFL head coach for the Rams and Seahawks, used to say, “The past is a cancelled check. The future is a promissory note. But today is cash.”

… how ’bout this instead: “the past is to resolve, the present is a proposition, tomorrow brings promise.”

Here’s hoping good decisions and proper behavior encourages a wealth of good fortune.

    Go Broncos.
