As we sit on the advent of free agency once again, as well as just a couple of months from the annual college draft, everybody has the excitement of being 0-0.
Every team has to live with what it most recently did, and for the Broncos that means the sour taste of a disappointing 7-9 season. For the Giants, it means being on national late night TV shows and basking in the glow of a world championship, as well they should.
But the one hunk of knowledge that every NFL coach and personnel man knows is that yesterday’s accomplishments, or failures, should be studied, evaluated, learned from, put proudly on a shelf if it is a trophy — but then you have to move on to the new season.
For the Broncos, we will look forward to injured players returning. Injuries cannot be used as an excuse, but the team nevertheless had 161 games missed by players last year due to injury, including 82 combined games missed by starters.
During Mike Shanahan’s 13 years in Denver, the overall average number of games missed by starters is 41.1, so last year’s total was double. Not as excuse, but a fact, and you have to get better when you are healthy.
In addition, the team obviously has received a very impressive infusion of young talent from the draft classes of 2006 and 2007, and there are high hopes that a similar crew will be added this year.
Meanwhile, every other team feels the same way.
With spring training under way right now, we are all reading stories every day about optimism in every single camp. And that is more than fair. We just don’t know that a great team will stay great, or that a poor performer from last year will not improve.
It all starts over.
And when it all kicks off for us in September, every team will have the same record that it has right now, 0-0, and every one of those teams will be looking to the glow of a new year.

Since the Broncos are not in the top 5 draft picks, maybe they should look to tading down for 2 spots in late round 1/round 2 ? Some teams will
start salivating over a particular player, then trade away much to get him,
only to find out that he doesn’t last but a few years in the NFL. It looks like
there are many good prospects in selections 10 - 50.
why trade down, in free agency Denver can pick up some good players. if anything trade Javon Walker to Dallas because right now they’re making a deal and maybe trade Travis Henry because we have Selvin Young and Andre Hall. in the first round we can still improve and (hopefully) grab Keith Rivers. I’m really hoping to grab this guy and if we trade down we’d have to settle for a slower, or weaker guy.
I believe that we should try to get one of these guys:
Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, OSU
Keith Rivers, OLB, USC
Kenny Philips, S, Miami
and if none of those or better players are left… Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St.
i agree with ur pick on Keith Rivers….look at what pat willis and jon beason did last season,,Rivers is of the same caliber as those two..could be even smarter and more instinctive….
are you guys edging on this Shaun Rodgers deal??I knw he had an impressive game against us last season but wouldnt he be the same as Sam Adams?too big too be in all downs let alone all quarters??I’m jst being pessimistic about it…I dont think he could catch his breath if he plays in the Mile High city..but still the Broncos could condition him to gud shape,,which is not likely,(i.e, Adams)…i hear Corey Williams might be on the block too,,that guys more acclimated to thin air from playing Green Bay..just a thought..
I say,,trade for Vilma,,draft Rivers, move Dj to outside(not that he is not a gud MLB),,it would be Rivers and Dj on the outside and Vilma in the middle,,then front four would be Dumervil, Marcus Thomas, Shaun Rodgers, and Crowder/Moss..
the secondary would be picking passes like apples with these guys in as the front seven..
heres a thought on Lynch,,we know he’s lost a step or two in pass coverage,,why not have him bulk up 10/20 lbs more and convert him into a linebacker,,he’s already a solid run stuffer and could play in 3-4 scheme…
plus,,the offensive line needs to be solidified..
Go BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so do we have rodgers for sure?
Guys,
lets not all forget that Matt Lepsis did just retire. And since this is a great draft for tackles, we could probably get a franchise tackle with that 12th pick. I say we save our pick and draft at tackle at 12.
Let me know what you think
John; Jake, Jay
7;16,6
I’m with John! LEft Tackle is a big need…it all starts in the trenches on both sides and we HAVE to get better there and the rest will fall into place.
I completely agree!!! we have always had a dominate o-line…. Its what makes us great. Its exactly why we didnt do so hot… to say the least this year. We need a strong left tackle… There are so many talented players there it would be stupid not to take 1 and restore the broncos to what we were……….
And i cna’t believe the free agency market this year!!! I mean there is so much talent out there its time for us to make some changes. With people such as Faneca… or just anyone!!!!
We won’t be stung by injuries as we were last season; that’s not likely. A left tackle is in our best interests and we’ll pick a gem at that position, I’m sure. I have perfect confidence that whoever the Broncos select, it will be the right call. That’s called having faith, and I know my fellow denizens of Bronco Country have a sufficient amount of such!
DONT TRADE for Vilma!!!!!! Not with briggs finally hitting the market. Just Pay the guy. Dj and briggs will help stop the run and take pressure off our D-line and let the young guys develop. Need to trade down for more picks.
Bigbe from green bay would also be a huge pickup
now thats a thought slimwigg on Briggs,,besides,,Vilma is leaning towards Detroit…lets get briggs…and Rivers..Clady would definitely help out the offensive line for years to come,,,but if if we cant get any gud tackles in the FA,den lets try nd get Clady…but Rivers is definitely a BIG plus on D..
Just a thought guys. I live just outside of Chicago so I listen to tons of sports radio that is primarily Chicago based. Briggs is a head case. This guy sees $$$$ and that’s it. Don’t get me wrong the boy can play, I just think that he money is his first priority team second. He always thought he should get Urlacher money…..Keep dreaming! I just think it’s a bad element we don’t need.
Maybe I’m wrong, I’m not sure….
Lastly, just wanna give a long distance handshake from Illinois. Great conversations on the blogs and appreciate the input from all of you…..
Let’s Go Get Em’ Boys!
ALL READY!
So far, we haven’t lost alot. Javon wasn’t playing and Ians heart really wasn’t into the new defense.
Hopefully we retain Elam, Foxy, Hamza and “especially” Paymah. (he was lights out at the end of the year)
Elam “wins” games, he is $$ inside the 40.
Foxy, well…..he isn’t happy in his role, maybe it’s time for him to move on.
I am surprised that Pat said that the “new” NFL is all about retaining good young players, then drags out the signing process with his young talent, so much for priorities.
All NFL teams 0-0

first of all i love the broncos, i think that Denver should do a better job in the offseason by getting more younger and athletic players like getting someone like Limas Sweed from texas. i seen him play all year long last year and that is what denver needs is a big time play maker. or even chad johnson all i am saying is we need some good receivers in this offseason or draft and please don’t get anymore washed up players.
Just like any of you I have hopes that the staff can actually find three to four players to come in from the draft that will make a difference. There hasn’t been too much added from free agency that will.
With the currant staff and the numerous needs the Broncos have where do you start, linebacker, defensive line, saftey, tackle, running back and now place kicker, I love all your suggestions. The odds are that it will be awhile before the Broncos are competive again. “The times they are a changing.”
Jim,
With regards to Brandon Marshal and his maturity I have a suggestion. I am a relativly new member of MarkedMenforChrist.org. I do not know if he is Christian, but this group would certainly help him. First it is men holding men accountable. I have never heard or seen anything like it, but they live what they talk, and they do hold you accountable to what you commit to. Second they help you go to the root of your problem. So for example if a man has an anger problem and the root cause was his father leaving him when he was ten or something like that. They help you go there and see your problem and deal with it. There are many other benefits, but I just want to pass on what I think will be helpful.
What i think denver should do is go offensive line first round and draft chris williams out of vanderbuilt and maybe cutlers old target will fall to the second round and denver can trade up two vandy players for cutler just a thought and go safety in the 3rd round and in the fourth pick up a DT.
