We didn’t play our best game against the Chiefs, but they did play their best. There were turnovers, and they capitalized on them. They were able to make a lot of big plays. If you do things like that, in their house, things are not going to go right. It’s just an early lesson. We’ve got to make sure we don’t take anyone lightly, no matter who it is. We came out flat, but give them credit — they had their best game. They were the better team that day.
When I got back and looked at film, I saw a lot of almost-sacks. I had several where I almost got there, and that could have been a difference. Sacks can change the game around. I take it personal, upon me, that we haven’t had those. And those are big momentum changers for a defense. For me, sacks are like interceptions. It’s a chance of a big play, a momentum swing, a turn of opportunity.
I think the energy was there — we were out there playing hard. Guys were just out of their gaps, and on the field against a good running back, he can take advantage of it. Larry Johnson scorched us a couple times. It’s all in the big plays. We’ve just got to make sure those kinds of situations don’t happen.
But now we are back home, in our house, to take on Tampa Bay. And they’re one of the best teams I’ve seen as long as I’ve been in the league, as far as the whole package. They’ve got a good defense. Their quarterback is hot right now — they can throw the ball, and they can run it. We’ve got a tough challenge, so it’s going to be interesting. But we definitely play hard at our house, and it’s always good to come home for back-to-back games after a loss. I think we can get some momentum going.
Since I’ve been talking a lot about everything on the field, I thought it would be a good idea to take you off the field and let you know a little more about me, who I am. I figure I’ll start out by just going over my weekly routine.
First, I record the game on DVR so I can watch it right after I get back. That way I don’t have to wait for the coaches to get me my corrections. I pretty much know what’s going on.
I come in Monday, and I just run out the soreness, no matter what it is. I push some sleds. I’ll go talk to my position coach and get his opinions on everything, and I’ll see my grade sheet from the game.
On Tuesdays, I kind of make it a film day. I just pick up film on the new opponent and get into that. I also go out to Reverend Kelly’s Open Door program. Brandon Marshall and I do that every Tuesday for a couple hours. From there, we usually go out to dinner. Then we play Madden, and I’ll head home after I beat him.
Wednesday, I come in early — it’s my early day. I wake up at around 6:30 to come in and work out so I can have time to write this in the afternoon. And then we get out to practice. We’ve got to have good preparation and a great week of practice to get ready for the game. It’s huge to have a good week of practice for that confidence and momentum going into the game Sunday.
Thursday’s another hard work day. That’s when I practice first and workout afterwards. Then we have the defensive dinner where we all go out to eat. Typically when we go out, and when I go out with Brandon too, we’ll head to a good steakhouse. We like to switch it up and try out good places all over. Then I’ll head home to watch some more film.
Friday’s typically a hat day — it’s a lighter practice day, and we can just wear hats after we win. But this week we’ve got to wear helmets. We’ve got to get back to that hat day. But it’s still a light practice. Friday I take care of all my errands — getting tickets for the game, getting my haircut, getting the car washed and things like that. And I like to watch movies on Friday, so it’s movie night.
After that, it’s game time. If it’s a home game, we can spend Saturday at home. But if we travel, it’s in a hotel. And then Sunday is the big day.
Talk to you next week.

I know I will be considered a bad bronco fan but you and your defensive mates should be really embarrased by the first four game regardless of the record. Yes you are 3-1 and the o had 4 turnovers but these are games that your side of the ball needs to step up and win. You allowed more points against the chiefs than they have scored in the previous 3 games combined.
As a fan we look at you and DJ and Champ as our best players on the defense and the way you and your mates are playing and all the excuses get old.
I am hoping you get after Greise and make some plays and I am a fan of yours so best of luck on Sunday.
Go Broncos and I hope the defense plays up to its potential.
GO BRONCOS!
harsh comments…
Good read as always Doom. It was very hard being in Arrowhead Sunday. I know you guys gave it your all on defense, and you did have many close calls, particulary when we blitzed Marlon early on and got burned. Things will turn around, hang in there. I think you guys are only a couple big plays away from everything coming together.
Good luck, and go Broncos
bones, you are correct. You do sound like a bad fan. I am going to go out on a limb and say that you never really played sports, and if you did, you weren’t all that good, because if you were, you would realize that a good athlete is his/her own biggest critic. I am sure that at a proffessional level, the athletes only become more critical of themselves. Especially athletes of Elvis’ caliber. So, once and for all, please, everyone, stop giving the defense advice, because trust me, they already know they need to work hard and try to fix their faults. it goes the same way for every other aspect of every other team. When you can look in the mirror and are satisfied, you have lost. You guys keep working at it Elvis, I can appreciate where you are coming from. The only opinions that matter are the ones in your locker room.
Aaron.
Absolutely, masturch. If there’s one thing I can count on as a devout Broncos fan, it’s that the Broncos, as men of integrity, feel more terrible about a horrendous performance than I ever could. Elvis, you and your 10 defensive teammates know how to correct the problems. Therefore, I’m sure you will. The Buccaneers are among the NFL’s best teams as you know so nothing short of the team’s best effort will suffice. Nevertheless, to go back to my original point, this won’t be a problem. I can see the Broncos at 4-1 after this game. Give Shanny #150! It’s cool that you watch the games on DVR on Mondays. I do that too. Rewatching NFL games in HD is the best because you can see all the details with a magnificent picture that you often miss when watching the games live. Keep up the hard work, Elvis. I appreciate it as do all true Broncos fans, (which obviously excludes bones).
Speaking of good steak houses around Denver - what places do you like the best so far? I need a good referral to treat my younger bro when I get into town to visit. I like charred/medium rare but not by flames.
I’m curious if you have tried any steak houses in KC?
You are so right about not overlooking anyone - but Denver never plays well in KC for some reason - I saw a ton of missed tackles last game…
Thanks,
G
DOOM Beat on Griese like u beat B Marsh at Madden!!!! GO Broncos!!!
hey Elvis, first time i’ve commented on the blog, but i’ve been keeping up with you every week. hey man, you gotta get a sack this week. i wanna see you top 5 in sacks on the NFL.com statistics page like i have the last 2 years. I know that’s only like 6 sacks this week, but i have no doubt in my mind you could get 6 in a game. okay maybe that’s a stretch, but you’re close, keep workin man!! Put that griese guy on his but a few times. A few questions.
Who do you and brandon play with when you play madden? What’s your teams? Also, does the whole defense go out to eat? i mean, thats a lot of guys out to eat. That’s awesome. Keep up the good work this weekend man, get that DUB!! Cya next week.
Peace, Shill
I remember when Griese played for us, everytime the pass rush came at him he was like a dear in headlights. If Mike remembers this he will bring on the BLITZ and force him to make turnovers like he did so often when he played for the BRONCOS. BLITZ and stop the RUN= 4-1!
If you scroll the boards at all i am one of the few that support this Defense I see alot of Greatness. And the way alot of people are coming down on this Defense well it really Pisses me off! Yeah they can point out the giving up yrds on run and they can say thier isnt a pss rush But what i see are alot of missed calls by the back judge and I am sorry if people think it is an excuse but Elvis should have about 8 - 10 sacks by now. And i totally agree as a fan who are you to criticise how a pro plays? Does he come to your job Bones at the Steak house on Thursdays and say “hey bones you missed a spot when you were washing this plate!” No he doesn’t! You know why? Because he has class might be something you need to learn when you approach this board! He is going out of his way to talk to us fans and some moron wants to bring up something that isn’t even in his control get lost or Grow up!!!! Elvis sorry I hope this didn’t offend you but i stick up for my team regardless! Keep up the great work and Thanks again for taking time out to talk to us!!!!! GOOOOOOO BRONCOSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
Dooooooom. Thanks for an inside look into your routine. You guys did a good job in KC stopping the run. Other than a few big plays, it was a solid day. I was definitely dissappointed, but I know you guys will step it up this week. I think you guys are just missing a few plays here and there to make this defense great. I’m tired of hearing all these analysts rank our defense so low. Shut them up doom, and go out there bring havoc in the backfield. Dig deep, push harder, and get outside your comfort zone, and I have no doubt that you guys will lead this team to victory.
Although bones was a tad harsh, he is right in his assertion that the defense has been very poor this year, and the pass rush has certainly been lacking. I did notice that you had a few near-sacks last week, but the pass rush in general was still poor unless we brought 6 guys.
Can you give us some insight into Jarvis Moss’ development? I was really excited to see him play this year when I read all the reports of him in camp, how he’s a different player etc etc, but he has done next to nothing this year.
DOOOOOMMMM!!! Good luck this weekend. Bring the pain to Griese.
Who decides what uniforms you will wear? I can see the D working hard, I know you guys will start clicking soon.
Bones I don’t think you sound like a bad Broncos fan. I think you just like a passionate fan. I’m with you man. Regardless of this record the defense has down right sucked and as fans we have to hope the offense protects the ball and puts up a lot of points. I do hope that the steps it up and plays a little more aggressive. I do have to say that I love to see all the reponses on these blogs and interact with you FANATICS in BRONCOS COUNTRY! LET’S GO BRONCOS LETS CRUSH THOSE BUCS!
Doom,
Do you play as the Broncos, when playing Madden?
Unlike some fans, I see a lot of good things the defense is doing. The problem is big plays and getting off the field on 3rd downs.
Anyway, I wish you luck, looking forward to a victory this weekend.
Thanks for the blog, Doom. I found it pretty interesting when you said that you have a “grade sheet” for the game. I’ve never really heard of that before. I always assumed that you guys watched the game film as a team and every play gets broke down as to who did what right and who did what wrong. Who fills out the grade sheet? The coordinators or the position coaches? Anyway, KC was a typical Arrowhead game. As a Bronco fan, I DESPISE that place. I know that you guys will get back on track at HOME SWEET HOME this Sunday! GO BRONCOS!!!!!!
If you haven’t seen a tape of Shanny’s comments on Al Divis’s firing of Lanr Kiffin, you’ve got to find a way to see it. I laughed so hard I almost peed myself. Shanny really put it all into proper perspective.
Doom!
Can’t wait to see what you have in store for cheesy Greasy this week.
ALSO, dude, do you have a jersey out yet or what? I’ve been trying to get some Dumervil gear to rock on Sundays, but to no avail. Can anyone out there give me some info on this.
Thanks,
Doom,
Great effort last week! If we had any push by our DT’s I know you would be getting plenty of sacks but the DT’s are not collapsing the pocket. I am with Bones on this one though, our overall Defense is so vanilla. We have 2 of the best cover corners in the league so why do we let them play man! Instead we are dropping everyone into coverage and getting torched underneath and giving up big runs. Somebody said we had good run defense last game; hell we gave up 200 yards to LJ. Sorry for ranting Doom, but this defense is not the Orange Crush Defense us fans are use to. You guys are playing defense more like the Orange Mush. Hopefully you use that as some motivation and put Griese on his butt all day Sunday.
yo bones 1965 why dont you go back to watching womans tennis and stop hating on your own team. this defense will get better as the season goes on and here’s why. 1. most of the guys on defense are new and it takes time to gell 2. if we continue to be one of the lucky teams in the nfl and stay healthy why everyone else is getting hurt thats a huge advantage. 3 guys like elvis, dj and champ dont stay down long and will always make plays. 4. slowick cant be that stupid and will eventually start blitzing more and stop that 3-4 d and only rushing 3 guys.
To BRONCOMESA u can find dumervils jersey on fansedge.com its 79.99
Broncosrockdahouse you sound like a little girl. We have the right to our opinion, we buy the jerseys go to the sports bar everyweekend go to games and support the team everyway possible, these guys are getting paid millions of dollars to do their job and when there not doing it right we have the right to hate. for two years now we have seen teams run all over us. lets go broncos get it done this week and lets see hoe the d perform. 34-27 broncs.
DOOM!
Tough loss last week I was really hoping you guys would be able to pull out another late 4th quarter win! Don’t get too down about the loss there were several mistakes that can be corrected with more concentration and a little of film work! Keep your head up and come back and rip the Bucks I still think we Broncos fans are in line for a great season!
BroncosRockdaRockies…Dude you are way off. Everyome on this Blog is a die hard fan and is only speaking the truth. This defense has sucked this year and all of last year. (Since when do the Chiefs rack up 400 yards of offense on a team?) I think its the players lack of ability. Not all but truly some of them. If different schemes are not working and different cordinators are not working than it must be the players. I am happy that our offense has take the next step and Im sure that Bob will be canned at the end of the year and we will focus on Defense throughout next years draft. All in all we fans bleed Orange and Blue and that will not change but we will call it as it is…..West Coast
West coast spoken like a true football fan. I could not agree more what makes me the most upset over this deff is we have played better with less talent. When joe collier was the deff cordinator we had a couple players like mecklenburg, rulon jones ands a couple of safetys. This deff has a lot more talent and doesn’t plays as hard creative as those teams did. meclenburg line up at 7 postions one game.
Speaking of safetys is time we call back John lynch
“Somebody call Osha because thats not safety”
broncos forever peace.
I agree with Bones and Scott2212, we love our team, we will stop downing the defence when the defence starts stopping and downings the other teams offence.
Our D has not stopped anyone for 2 years.
I really hope you guys take it to Tampa. Like I’ve been saying for awhile now I’m going to the game with my brother. Its his late birthday present and he’s nice enough to bring the big sis along. If you could get a sack on Griese or if Champ can get an interception I would be more than thrilled!!
Your week sounds a whole lot more interesting than mine. lol. But probably equally busy.
I’ll be cheering loud for you boys!! See you Sunday!!
Who do you be on madden when you play Brandon Marshall???? Do you have PS3 online account?
Doom
Awesome job on Sunday, and forget about anyone who sits in an easy chair and thinks they are qualified to criticise your team, defense or your personal play.I want you to know I live in an area where it is not only hard to get the Bronco games on tv,but I live right between Raider,Seahawk,Niner and Charger fans, and a Cheif fan down the road from me.I have no problem telling them all to stick it whether we are 3-0 or 3-1 we are behind you guys all the way.GO BRONCOS!!!
C’mon
Doom baby
Lets get them this week. I miss those multiple sack games you had last season.
Show them haterz who is the boss this week.(Nothing against Boss)
I know your pinkys been botherin, but man everyone has some kinda injury its the nfl.
GAME TIME
DdK
It’s funny to me how people are so quick to criticize….the NFL is not a volunteer organization…like “Hey, I wanna play too.” Pretty sure these guys have been playing football for a few years now, and the coaches have been in the game too. They see the strengths and weaknesses better than any of us do, otherwise we’d be in their shoes. Elvis, thanks for giving us the play by play of your week…..ya’ll have MORE meetings, geez, LOL… I think it’s great what you and B Marsh are doin each week…you have no idea what kind of impact you can have on those kids.
Let me know when you’re ready for me to beat you in Madden….
Ms. F
doods need to stop hassleing the d…im sure they get the point…SHOW SOME FREAKING SUPPORT…broncos are gonna OWN!!
Mr. Dumervil, please for the love of God dont let Greeeezy torch us, please put him on his back!!!!! p.s. your the man, you will get the sacks going!!!
I think you should take Tim Crowder, Jarvis Moss, Marcus Thomas and put them under your wing. Teach them 5 good moves on the field and also teach them how to spin so the defensive line can be in the top 5 defensive lines in the NFL every year.
The next Sunday the Broncos are going to lose against the Bucs, and the wonderful defense of the Broncos will be displayed as the worst in the NFL,
Shanahan’ll see the comments of his foolishness and nothing happens.
is the beginning of 6 victories and 10 defeats in 2008
almost dont count. almost gettin a few sacks aint good. especially now when the charges are in the winning streak. you and the rest of the defense got to boost up your intesity becuase your 30th in the league for defense. getting better starts with you and the front of the line. Maybe seeing you guys stop the run AND get some sacks going that would pump up the secoundary. maybe start gettin bly in the game becasue for now it seems like he should stay with detriot.
Doom, i like it but man i didnt like the game this sunday. It was pretty bad but im not giving up on the defense you guys just need to keep trying the rest will fall into place. I was just wondering how Josh Barret did in training camp because i would really like to see him play this season. I did not get to see the game this week i slept in because of our homecoming dance but i really hope you end this sack drought and what better person to sack than griese, guy made me cry so much with the way he played here in denver yep those were the dark days. hope you guys win this game and many more.
I love the bantor with us real Fans no one can, tell me I am not a Bronco fan because I am not happy with one aspect of the team and because I believe in accountability. I have been a fan for over thirty years and I love watching this team, I am passionate about it and I dont make apologies. Facts are that we have the worst defense in the AFC and we rank 30th in the whole league on Defense thats the facts.
For all of those stiffs who question people like me, look and look carefully
at this. The broncos will win a couple of Superbowls in the next 3 to 8 years. I think our Offense is amazing. We are so young on the Offensive Line with our great Tackles and Kuper inside. We have great skill players with Marshall, Royal and Scheffler. Jay Cutler is the QB we have been waiting for since #7 retired. Shanahan as much as he irritates me has single handledly won last years Raiders game and this years Chargers game. So tell me about not being a fan.
Columbus Ohio Bronco tough loss to USC and nice schedule it must have been difficult to beat Troy and Youngstown State and Ohio and that powerhouse Minnesota, Nice try with USC. By the way whats wrong with women’s tennis.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not the greatest game to watch. Everyone can point out flaws. Pointers to a professional are useless they see what’s wrong. The defense had to protect a short field and did fairly well. The defense plays solid then gives up a big play. This division is ours!!! Its up for the defense to take it, they know this don’t beat the bucks, crushhhh themmm!!! GO Broncos
Doom! Congratulations on earning a Hat Day on Friday!! Great to see the Broncos Defense back on the right track after a tough outing against Kansas City. I’m sure you guys are really happy about this one and now having a two game lead on the AFC West!
I just wanted to comment that I really liked how you included more off the field things in your blog this week. Something that I really liked about Foxworth’s blog last year is that he talked a lot about things going on for him off the field: his thoughts on politics, sports, or whatever. I think it’s neat for us as fans to get insights into what a NFL player’s life is like off the field and what it’s like to hang out with other players and coaches. Thanks again for taking time to write this blog every week!
… One last thing, I just wanted to say that three weeks ago when you played San Diego, that was one of my most memorable Broncos games as a fan. I live in Houston, TX and that was the weekend when we were pounded by Hurricane Ike. My dad and I spent all day Sunday chopping up trees with everyone else in the neighborhood that had fallen in our backyard by the hurricane. Most of our neighborhood did not have power, but we were one of the lucky homes that did. We were able to listen to the Broncos game on 850KOA.com and just went ecstatic at the end of that game when you guys made the two point conversion! My dad and I commented after the game to each other how that was one of the most satisfying Bronco wins we’ve ever experienced due to how terrible that weekend was with the Hurricane. Being able to take our minds off the mess that was all around us and enjoy Broncos Football for three hours that Sunday afternoon after all that had happened that weekend was just perfect. Things are making its way back to normal here in Houston for my family, but there are still many people who do not have power and are heavily inconvenienced even today by the storm. And I am sure that there are many other Broncos fans out there in the Houston area that take great enjoyment for just a few hours of their week listening or watching you guys. Thanks again!
Adam
Doom - Man, CONGRATULATIONS on shutting them up. They said you couldn’t do it. They said our defense couldn’t stop anyone. All these haters talking smack.
Today, you guys made me the proudest to be Broncos fan as I have been in a long time. It wasn’t flashy; no “shootout at mile high”. But today wasn’t the offense’s day… it was the DEFENSE!!
Every last one of you guys on defense played with the intensity that this team has been missing. And you were a beast getting after the QB. That’s what I was talking about… you guys just played with heart and attacked them everywhere… and never let up. That’s where you guys belong… you are a soldier… keep it up doom!!
We have some good depth on the D line positions, we really need some more depth at RB though. Seems they are all getting hurt, I mean “Pitt and Hall both placed on IR”
hope you are still looking, didn’t want you to just get it, I want to be sure you want to talk to me!
