My Injury, Chad Johnson and More…

August 27th, 2008 - 2:26pm by Elvis Dumervil

I think we really got a lot accomplished during the preseason. Now it’s about to be the real deal — real bullets are about to start flying. We’re excited. I think we have a lot of confidence. We have a lot of upside. I just feel like we’re ready to go.

As most of you probably know, I got injured last week playing against the Packers. When it happened, a guy was trying to cut block me, and I tried to avoid him. I kind of rolled over my finger, but I stayed in for a couple plays. Then I started to realize that it was getting stiff. Then it started to really hurt. I came to the sideline close to the end of the half, and I told Greek, the head trainer, “I think something’s wrong.” So we went inside to get the x-rays, and it was definitely broken.

The very next morning I had surgery. They knocked me out, did the procedure and stuck four pins in my finger. Now I’m just in the recovery process and try to get ready for the Oakland game. Hopefully it will come along. It’s just frustrating. I’m not doing anything. I can’t really do anything to work out because the doctors don’t want me to sweat, since it would risk an infection. So I’m just sitting around and trying not to get out of shape. I just want to heal up quickly and be ready for the opener.

It takes about six weeks for broken fingers to heal, but I’m going to be able to get back way before then. I’ll wear a cast probably for a while, and I’m definitely going to have to change my stance a little. I’ll have to adjust my rushes. It sounds little, but it’s major, especially for my position. I’ll get through it and come strong for Week 1.

I wanted to mention this a while back, but things got pretty busy around here. Many of y’all probably heard about Chad Johnson challenging Michael Phelps, the American Olympic swimmer who won eight gold medals over in Beijing. He said that he knows several people from Liberty City, down in Miami, that could beat Phelps. Then he challenged Phelps himself. Well I’m from Liberty City too. And let me say, Chad is just being Chad. There’s no way, I don’t think, that he could beat an Olympic swimmer. I think he’s just being an entertainer. At the same time, those guys down there in Miami are big time swimmers. That’s all we did growing up as kids was go to the swimming pool. But I don’t know about beating a guy who breaks all the world records.

Well we’re off tomorrow, heading down to Arizona to take on the Cardinals for the last preseason game. Even if I had not hurt my hand, I most likely wouldn’t play since Coach Shanahan is resting the starters. But I’ll be on the sideline, and I just want to see our young D-linemen. I want to see them go out there and get sacks, create havoc. With final cuts coming up, we know that not everyone can make this team. So I just want to see guys step up and go out there and make plays.

Now for some of the questions…

matt203: There aren’t any particular linemen I’m looking forward to face. There are a lot of good left tackles that I’m going up against, a lot of first-rounders. It’ll be a good challenge to welcome some of those new linemen to the NFL.

meisner: Our scheme really fits Robertson well. I think the chemistry is there. I think our run defense has gotten better with his additional help. I think it’s going to be huge for us, having him in there and healthy. I think he’s going to be good for us — big time.

leandro15×92: Eddie looks nice, man. He’s explosive. He came in doing more than I thought he would be doing. He has set the bar high, as far as a rookie, coming in this preseason. He’s humble. He’s a hard worker. I think that he’s going to be great for us for years to come.

broncofan_68: I just want to say, without all of you serving we couldn’t be out here playing this game. I wish you the best. May God be with you. Thank you for protecting us. The effort and hard work that you put in is not unnoticed. I really appreciate it.

I’ll talk to you next week as we get ready for our opener on Monday Night Football against the Raiders!

  5. qgriffin says:

elvis I have one question for you, why doen’t Nate buckle up his helmet does he like his helmet flying off everytime he hit’s somebody? Although I do have to admit if your not a bronco fan you think he was the hardest hitting LB in the league the way his helmet goes flying

Hey I Have A Question For Ya..

Im A Junior And Playing For A Class 1A High School. I Am (Well Was) The Starting Mike Linebacker, And I Play A Little Center On Offense. Well Anyways I Tore Three Smaller Ligaments In My Ankle..None The Less Still Hurt Like Crazy..The Doctor Said I Also May Have A Small Chip Towards The Base Of My Tibia. My Doctor Said Im In The Cast For 6 Weeks, And Then A Boot, And PT After That. My Coach And Team Doctor Have Said They Want Me To Come Back As Soon As I Get The Cast Off..Right Now That Sets My Season Back Half A Year. So I Dont Know What I Should Do, Should I Listen To My Coaches Or Go With The Doctors Advice. And Hopefully Your Finger Heals Well, Fingers Can Be Some Of The Worst Injuries They Never Seem To Heal Quick Enough. Thanks!

  7. broncofan_68 says:

Thanks much Elvis! I’ve got a bunch of Bronco haters here I’m working with - and it’s hard to get away from them when you all live and work so closely together - so I’m pulling for you all to bring some DOOM and pain to the ‘enemy.’

I also appreciate what you all do in the communities there in Colorado. I’m sure without that there are a lot of people that couldn’t be doing what they do, so right back atcha!!

Keep up the great hard work, let the finger heal, and then bring the hurt to the Raiders! Show that 2d year Raider q-back (JaMarcus somebody) how the big guys play some real football.

  8. delux304 says:

i guess Ill be the negative blogger of this blog:

Im not to happy with the fact that they are rushing him back. If the bone in his hand takes 6 weeks to heal, how can you be good to play in a 2 weeks. For me (and not that Im anybody), its no rush. We have 16 games and rematches of each of the division games. i want Doom to be $100% rather than 80%.

    Just my $0.02

  9. dabroncos27 says:

i agree delux, i want doom to be 100 also…doom, we have good depth at de, and can use you all year long…be strong and cant wait to see you on the field…go broncs

  10. matt203 says:

thanks for answering my question elvis. my friends are pretty jealous of me now. get well and good luck against the raiders

  11. champrox24 says:

DOOOOOOOM!!!! i hope your finger gets better soon!!!!

    GO BRONCOS

    Elvis,
i was wondering about Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder how are they adjusting to the scheme are they improving there pass rush and why does always seem like there bullrushing i hardly ever see any spin moves, rips, or swims i no that i obviously cannot see everything that’s going on but is there perhaps some sort of technique behind this.

  13. broncos_baby6 says:

I’m so stoked for the Raider game :D I was actually suppose to come watch you guys play in that game but my dad couldn’t get the day off. Plus, he didn’t want to get shot in Oakland :/ lol which is understandable. I’ll probably have to wait until you guys play then niners in S.F. :( oh well.

  14. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

The Raiders suck! That’s all there is to it. Elvis, you’re the man and I’m sure you’ll find a way to give JaMarcus Russell hell. The defensive line is an intriguing part of the team to me. If you, Robertson, Marcus Thomas and Ekuban can take care of business, then we’re easily a playoff team. Hopefully, all of you X factors on the D-line will be successful. Cutler will play well, as will the receivers and tailbacks and the secondary. Nevertheless, you’re the key to making us an elite team. Good luck Elvis with the rehabilitation!

  15. meisner says:

i just gotta say, im pretty stoked to see you guys play here in arizona, i cant wait to go to the game on friday. pray your hand heals much faster than expected, and even if your in a cast your better than any other DE in the league.

also, will we see a lot of blitzes this year by the defense and 8 men in the box?
how do you think Boss bailey fits in the defense?

  16. blakerbomb123 says:

thanks doom!!! hey, im here in santa monica, calfornia.
who on the team who that we have not heard much about do you think will do well for there expectations? or in other words, who on the team do u think is due up to shock people this year with some great performences? thanks again!!!!!! BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. denwu says:

    Doom, Please answer this question?

Can you bring back the Mile High Salute? Read previow blog of yours on my comments. I’ll keep asking. The team needs that positive salute back in our aresenal. Can you tell Brandon marshall, Selvin Young, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler, Nate Jackson, and all the D-Linemen that we need to salute it up all day? Trust me, it’s a signature salute for the Broncos and it creates an energy and comraderie that leads to Super Bowls!!! I’m an avid observer that sees weird things in the NFL before they happen and I can’t stress how important this one little thing is. Thanks again, don’t rush back to quick if that finger bothers you. Your career is too valuable to us for that finger to not fully heal. Thanks Elvis, you are the man and I’m gonna keep defending the team from all the haters out there. No one thinks we’re gonna do anything this year. NFL.com completely wrote us off for the OVERRATED Chargers. I hope you make either Philip Rivers or LT fumble. We gotta get them back for last year.

  18. Hesky says:

    Rest that finger ;)

  19. bleed orange says:

Hey DOOM, there is no way Chad could ever beat Phelps, NO FREAKIN’ WAY, but it’s like you mentioned, he’s just an entertainer and we’ll leave it at that. Shut those Raiders down on Monday night and make sure those Raider fans remain quiet, they are the most annoying fans in the NFL!!! Let that finger of yours heal because we the Bronco fans of the world need you this season!

  20. rainmaker says:

    Doooom!
How is it typing the blog with the broken finger? Just another example of mental toughness on the part of Elvis Dumervil. BUsted finger, types blog one-handed anyway!

  21. Va BroncosFan says:

    Doooom.

I had a good talk with Jarvis during FanFair. He has promised me that he will do his part to shut Phillip Rivers up. Any way you can help keep Rivers’ mouth as quiet as possible? He won’t be able to do much talking from his back.

  22. kyle2129 says:

    Hey Doom.

I am a huge fan, I look for you to have a pro bowl year(I voted for you last year)I was at the packers game. I was one of the wounded iraqi war vets that was on the field before the game. I yelled your name and you said something back. I just want to tell you and Daniel Graham and the rest of the bronco organization Thank You for showing us wounded soldiers good hospitality. Good luck this season.

  23. cornersfan says:

I hope you can heal up quickly and get in there for MNF!! When they were describing your injury in the paper they made it sound pretty gruesome. The way you put it sounded a heck of a lot less painful. Sorry to see you hurt…but see you in Oakland!!

  24. TheOrangeNblue says:

ED-your the heart n soul of our d-line,man. Keep up the great work. Lookin forward to seein yuh slay some QBs this year.

  25. dwillwilliams27 says:

Next great end in Broncos history since Trevor Pryce We just need some one on the other side, it cant just be the DOOM SHOW.

  26. ElvisDumervil=God says:

Hello Mr. Dumervil i have watched you since you played for the vill. Ever since the first play i saw you i was amazed. i saw your hand motion and your speed. I figured you would do great in the nfl n i was right. so id like to say congrads and i have followed up on ur stats ect. I just wanted some advice i may play dtackle at Saint Xavier high school im a junior n i was just wondering how you got your speed and hand motions so fast and what is your favorite pass rush move, and most importantly im a pretty small dlineman and was wondering wat do you do vs guys that are 2xs your size and overpower you. Good luck in your season n srry bout your hand

  27. jlsmoothy says:

Elvis: Post this in the locker room and prove these SOBs wrong. These so called experts are giving us no credit. Thanks for all you do and keep the the great work.

Vic Carucci: Now that Jay Cutler has his diabetes under control, the Broncos’ quarterback should have the strength and stamina to carry him for an entire season. Still, it’s hard to say if that is enough to make the Broncos a playoff team. Prediction: 7-9

Thomas George: Jay Cutler passes for big yards and a few scores. That alone will not make the Broncos a division or postseason factor. Prediction: 9-7

Pat Kirwan: Denver struggles to stop the run in a division that is committed to the run, and that always spells trouble. Jay Cutler continues to grow as a quarterback, but Brandon Marshall needs to stay away from the off-field issues that have plagued his young career. Prediction: 8-8

Gil Brandt: Broncos QB Jay Cutler needs to have a big year, but it’s even more important for the run defense to make some plays. They allowed 4.6 yards per carry in 2007. Most of their tough non-division games are at home. Prediction: 6-10

Jlsmoothy: Elvis and the boys will carry us back into the playoffs. See you there. Prediction: 11-5

  28. broncosfrance says:

Don’t rush too quick to the field , Elvis . This first game’s important , it set the tone for the season but there’s so many football left to play after this one and we really need you healthy . Otherwise , i’m little nervous about Tim crowder and evenmore Jarvis Moss , from the outside , it seems he struggled a little bit during preseason and damned ! everybody knows how skilled he is !!I have great hope he will settle during the course of the season , whith him playing at his potential and you opposite , our Dline will be terrific !!!

  29. harydogg says:

Elvis, love the moniker Doom that seems to be catching on pretty quick! Fitting for the style of play you bring to the field. As a UK/UL/Bronco fan here in Louisville glad we scooped you up man. I loved watching you terrorize QB’s all game long(except for that one game a yr) and am still enjoying it now that your a Bronco. Get that finger healed up and let’s set that bar high this season, love to see you lead the league in sacks. We all know you got it in ya! How is Woodyard doing? From what i’ve seen he’s played pretty well and dropped a few licks on some people. You been giving him a hard time during camp? LOL. Godspeed and Good Luck! DOOM!!!

  30. leandro15x92 says:

Thanks for the reply. Good luck with yout finger. I hope everythings turns out well.

  31. broncos14441 says:

Is this a curse? Since Elvis and Ryan have taken over for Foxy, they have both had an injury. Thats Spooky!

  32. imjoe says:

Hey E.D.! How do you kick so much ass?

  33. tonyshucraft says:

Out of the defensive rookies, was there any ones that really jumped at you. From my perspective it was woodyard but that is from a perspective of somebody who isn’t there. You have gotten to know these guys better than the fans have, so obviously there is something.

Also, what are your thoughts on the DNC and everything being in Denver. I don’t know what you caught of it, or how much time you had but it gave me an odd feeling in my stomach. No matter what your politics are, I think that Obama wining the nomination was something that signifies something. No, I don’t know what that time in history was like, nor do I know how it is to be a African American, but I felt like the time I live in means something more than just terrorism and war. That there is good progress being made within society.

And just like many who have dealt with hard times, or have been thought to be nothing, I think it is worthy of noting that what have you have done so far in your career has been awesome.. In your first year I heard people saying that you just weren’t right, and indicating that you were just lucky but you proved them wrong. Many great players and people have been on this team and you are nothing short of that.

  34. BossTheHausBailey says:

They should make T-shirts of you sacking Phillys Rivers and in Big Blue and Orange letters says, PREPARE TO MEET YOUR DOOM!!!!!!

  35. BroncoAdam says:

Doom sorry about your finger man, hopefully it heals up and you’re 100% ready for the season!

Did you watch any College Football this season? Any thoughts on the upcoming season?

Good luck this Monday against the Raiders, I know you guys are going to win!

  36. bigbombs says:

You guys aren’t big time swimmers. Chad Johnson couldn’t beat women on a D-1 college team, let alone michael phelps. And let me tell you this - michael phelps is not even qualified to cut my toe nails.

  37. wormyblackburny says:

    Doom,

You obviously don’t fit the “physical” profile for a D-lineman, so I wanted to ask:

    1) What positions did you play growing up?
    2) Was it a battle to get pro scouts to believe you could be an NFL caliber lineman?
    3) How and why did you find yourself playing D-line in HS and college?

Thanks for reading all of our posts. Rest that hand and get better soon.

  38. broncofan_68 says:

Hey Elvis. Just wondering how the finger was doing? Things here are the same as usual. I saw that Lynch was released from NE; is there a chance he could be back in a Broncos uniform at all?
